Also while the Soviet Union was around they were better fed than Americans.
The USSR effectively ended famine. When it was dissolved and reverted to neoliberal capitalism a famine occurred that lead to millions of deaths.
The Holodomor in Ukraine and Kazakhstan famine of 19321933 have been seen as genocide by Joseph Stalin's government; up to 3 million people died in Ukraine and 600,000 (15% of all Kazakhs) died in Kazakhstan.
