Not partaking in a console launch -- How long has it been for you?

I'm just sitting here, reading, and talking with a buddy, when I thought about something. I'm not getting an Xbox 360 right now, which is the first time I'm not partaking in a console's launch since the early 90's. It feels really strange, and I almost have the urge to go out and get one, just because I think I should. Am I alone?

i have never gotten a console anywhere near launch day. Nothing has ever impressed me so much I need to rush out at midnight and throw money at it.

Revolution will be the first launch I haven't partaken in...unless they work something wonderful at E3. I've been along for the launch ride for every system since the N64.

Go get one. You know you want to.

That said, I technically missed the PSP's launch in the US but still ended up with a launch unit (so I have launch units for the US and Japan). I missed the Xbox one by ten days as well (when stores very well had enough stock -- we in for round two of that? :lol).

I've only been to the N64 and GC launches.

But I bought a PS2 and DC for launch price.

I haven't participated in a system's launch since the 32/64-bit days. Each and every single launch since then has been retarded and it only seems to be getting worse so fuck it all. I'll wait till the stupid subsides.

Even though I wasn't planning to I pre-ordered and picked up a PSP on launch morning. But as far as consoles, the last one was the Gamecube, even though it was a day later. I'm skipping on the 360 at least until either March or Ninja Gaiden 2's release.

can't believe I threw away five hundred fucking dollars on that and fucking accessories five hundred fucking dollars fucking fuck.

Let's see ...

PSP launch - yup
DS launch - yup
Xbox launch - yup
GBA advance and SP launch - yup
PS2 launch - yup
Gamecube launch - yup
Dreamcast launch - yup both American and Japan machines
N64 launch - ugh...yesss..
Saturn launch - yes
Playstation launch - NO ding ding ding, we have a winner! unless you count the Gizmondo, do we have to?

The only launche I've partaken in was the DS launch. I got my PSP the weekend it came out, so it was close, but the DS was the only thing I've ever gotten on launch day.

I actually feel like I should be out there picking up a 360 too, but I can't justify spending 400 bucks right now when I don't see a game that really astounds me. So for the moment, I'm planning on waiting until it drops significantly in price. I probably won't even consider it until it's at 300 for the premium, and it doesn't become a definite buy until it hits 250.

I'm pretty sure I'll be sitting out the PS3 launch too. The only way you'll get me out there on launch day for that is if MGS4 launches with the system. Otherwise, waiting for price drops.

Revolution though... that's gonna be a launch day pickup for me. I'm TOO excited for the new controller.

The N64 was the only system I bought at launch (for the obvious reason of Mario 64). Unfairly or not, I judge a launch by whether the launch games really feel like a significant leap over the current gen (gameplay-wise, not just graphically)--and no system since the N64 (with the arguable exception of the DC) has given me that feeling.

This is true. I don't really want it, but I feel like I have to have it. I told my girlfriend this, after she listened to months of me saying how terrible it looked, and she called me a fucking idiot. She's right, of course. But I can't help it.

Not trying to troll, but this launch is really a non-event. There's a reason people say xbox 1.5 and whatnot, and when everything that's coming out at launch is a sequel or some gamecube throwaway, is there really any reason to be foaming at the mouth over this yet?

Not yet. I'm sure there will be later, though.

Well I wont for this one, but that doens't mean I dont want one. A matter of waiting and making the money to afford one...

I don't think I've ever bought a system at launch. Closest I bought to launch was the dreamcast (like a month after). I'm waiting for a new hardware revision of the 360 before I get one (same goes for the ps3).

The only gaming related hardware I've ever bought at launch was the PSP.

All others were bought roughly 6months to a year from launch.

Pricedrop FTW!

The only time I ever plan to buy anything on launch day is the Famicom Micro on November 29. The closest I came to it before was the PSP the day after launch - what a stellar decision that was.

Only hardware I've bought at launch was the DS and PSP... got a Dreamcast the first Xmas it was out on the market... but other than that I usually wait at least a year (till a system "breaks") before picking it up.

9/9/99 was the only time for me as well. Though I actually already had the console, I just wanted to pick up some games and accessories.

I did get the Sega Saturn at launch price though in June of '95.

I don't see myself getting a Xbox 360 until better games come out and the price goes down. I'm not going to spend nearly half a grand just for NBA '06.

I bought a Japanese Xbox at launch for like $420, plus JSRF for $60, plus S-Video cables for like $40. FOR CABLES.

I learned my lesson but good.

Same here. I've always been a sucker to get a new system at launch, but for the first time not doing so with the 360.

I've only bought one console at launch, which was the Dreamcast. I went to get it at 12am, but the line was too damn long, so I just went back after school the next day :lol

I *almost* went down to Best Buy to stand in line, but I don't have my car, so I would have had to have taken the bus. I didn't want to get robbed, so I'll probably just check out Target and Best Buy tomorrow morning, hoping there is a unit or two lying around.

I've only been doing launches since DS. I had a 2nd shipment reserve at EB, but I just happened to be next door to a Gamestop (An hour away from my house) that day, and they had non-reserve DSes. I had to drive home, get the money together, and drive back to get it.

For PSP it was as last minute thing., I wasn't going to, but I realized that if I pooled 2 gift certificates (Simon Mall and Best Buy) from christmas, I'd have enough to buy it, so I wated outside Best Buy.

For 360, I'm doing the curcuitcity.com thing.

Alan Keyes Is Making Sense- and so is Bjork!

Only launches I've participated in:

SNES
N64
GCN
PS2
DC
X360 - thanks Pepsi/Doritos!!

I will buy Rev on day one, and for the PS3, well I've got Ultimate Spider-man #1 White Cover/Red Cover/Dynamic Forces sitting here in at least 9.8 CGC condition. :D

The only one that I was THERE for on launch day was the Dreamcast.

The little white box that could do it all.

Got NFL2k and Soul Calibur day of launch along with 2 VMUs.

Later on I picked up Powerstone and something else...memory eludes me at this time. It was 6 years ago (GOOD GOD THAT LONG AGO?) so things are a bit hazy.

I was so wowed by the DC because it was just so far ahead of everythign else at the time.

The only console launch I was involved with was Gamecube's, and yet I have more than ten consoles.

I was either a kid, or I was too lazy to come up with money and needed to spend money on other shit.

I don't recall ever buying a console at launch either, so what? It's no big deal. They'll be there when you finally decide to get your own. No rush.

This is the first console launch, Nintendo 64 aside, that I won't be a part of, although I will be getting a Japanese 360 when it launches here. I find myself wondering if I would even care about the U.S. launch if I were back home; there's really nothing on the system, Ridge Racer 6 aside, that I even care about. I am buying a 360 at launch in Japan mainly for Dead Or Alive 4. If DOA4 is delayed, I doubt I will even end up buying a system this year. As much as I love Ridge Racer, RR6 just seems like a port of the PSP version, and I'm not all that hyped up for Perfect Dark Zero. Microsoft really needed a "Halo 2.5" for its launch, IMO...the system just doesn't have that killer app launch title.

I've only been on one console launch and that was the PSP one. I bought it because it also played music and movies, had it been only for games Im sure I would've waited.

I feel weird cuz I do want a X360 but Im not like GOSH NEXT GEN STARTS TODAY AND IM NOT THERE TO EXPRIENCE IT. I feel more weird because Im not quite hyped about it...

Besides current gen is FAR from over. At least on the PS2 side of things... and I have like a collection of games waiting to be finished before I taste anything next gen.

last time i got a console at launch was the gamecube. i won't be getting the x360 at launch and it would take a killer orgasmic lineup for me to get the PS3 at launch. I'll probably get a Revolution at launch *if* they have the retro game download service from the start.

I'll be there for Rev on day 1. But yeah, I see what you mean... Not as excited as I usually am. Thats not to say i don't want a 360, but theres nothing thats blowing my mind like a new system usually does.. In any case I'll probably fold in get one in the next few months if Santa isn't good to me. =P

:)

I'm in the opposite boat. Never partaken in a launch, but MS decided to give me one for free. So I figured, what the hey? :lol

I was actually pretty intent on getting one anyways, but this is actually my first launch (and pre-launch) system.

But then I realized PS2 sucked at launch and sold it for double it's value and used that money to buy one when ZOE and the MGS demo came out. The only other consoles I ever got at launch were N64 and DC which were keepers.

I've done the...

Genesis
SNES
3DO
Saturn
Playstation
PS2
Xbox

...launches.

I got the Atari 2600, and Dreamcast at later (than launch) dates. I bought my daughter a Gamecube (that she, or nobody else ever plays anymore) well after launch, and my brother got a N64 at launch, which I played a little (Pilotwings 64 rocked, and is the only Nintendo title I have ever liked oddly enough - didn't like Mario 64 believe it or not). I also tried to score a 360 tonight, to no avail (missed it by a mere two people despite waiting in line 6 hours; I was 28th in line where they had 26 units - DOH!).

Out of every launch, I think this 360 is hands down the absolute cream of the crop as far as quality of launch titles... with probably the PS1 a distant second.

Out of all of those consoles, nothing, and I mean NOTHING has ever come even remotely close to the "wow factor" that the 3DO delivered for its time. I mean, it was so jaw dropping that we literally were freaking out, calling all our friend in disbelief of what we were witnessing (Need for Speed). It's just, that jump from Genesis/SNES to 3DO was the biggest graphical jump we've ever made. I don't think we will ever get that feeling again... that's a once in a lifetime event. My friends, my brother and I were all complete 3DO aficionados after that.

The closest I've ever really came to partaking in a launch was getting my PS2 the day after launch day, and that was pretty much just like my other console purchase experiences, the store wasn't even crowded at all, found a unit on the shelf, bought it. I have plenty of launch systems though (most recently my PSP). I live in the sticks, so it's usually entirely possible to go to the mall about 20 minutes away and find a system a few hours after launch or the next day when all the crowds have dissipated(wich there usually aern't any). I used to think camping out for a 12 A.M. launch would be a cool experience when I was younger, and I'd still like to try it sometime, but in general, the older I've gotten, the less appealing the idea sounds, especially when 9/10 times I don't have any trouble finding said console the next day.

N64 was a different story around here though, huge lines, completely sold out stores, my parents got me one for Christmas, and they had to wait for a few hours in line and just barely got one of the last few consoles, crazy times those were...

The PSP is the only system I've bought on launch day. For some reason, that felt a little different than the gigantic thing that goes on for home consoles.

I was two days away from jumping in with the 360...but the timing just wasn't right to me. And I just wasn't excited enough. Assuming the 360 doesn't knock the wind out of Sony, I may go day one on the PS3. I'd feel less guilty as most my remaining games are PS2 and backwards compatible, etc. So far the timing seems to be right that I'll have time to be happy with a HDTV, it will be an uber step up from the PS2, etc. Let's see how they handle their launch. At least I can make a wider, more considered choice when the competitors show up.
