Not partaking in a console launch -- How long has it been for you?

system launch? i didn't get xbox at launch (though virtually every other system).

generation launch? I didn't get into 8-bit until 1987. otherwise I started every other generation at the generation launch.

Console launch, haven't done one on launch day since the PS2, though I did eventually pick up a GC and Xbox.

Last was Gamecube and I still love Luigi's Mansion.

Here's a fun tidbit about that game.

There was heavy debate within Nintendo on what the polygon count should be for the door handle when luigi opened a door and thus the door handle got a closeup shot.

Just shows how much it takes to make a fucking game.

I'm just sitting here, reading, and talking with a buddy, when I thought about something. I'm not getting an Xbox 360 right now, which is the first time I'm not partaking in a console's launch since the early 90's. It feels really strange, and I almost have the urge to go out and get one, just because I think I should. Am I alone?

I feel the same way

I've stayed away from console launches ever since the DC was released in Japan. I honestly feel no urge at all to get a 360 right now. Too expensive, and not enough good games to interest me. And I also got enough games (along with games I intend to pick up) for current-gen consoles to last me well over a year. And by that time, maybe there are a couple of awesome 360 games out along with a console price-cut.

this is the first gen i decided NOT to buy consoles at launch.. after all the crazy bundles and price drops last gen (xbox/gc/p2), there is no way i would pay full price for a console again.

I have been involved in the following launches:

Atari Lynx
SNES (my roommate, anyway)
PSX
N64
Dreamcast
PS2
GBC
GBA
PSP

So it's not that odd to sit one out. I didn't get an X-Box at launch either, or a Saturn, or a Cube (which I never got at all).

I did the DC and PSP launches.... and now the 360 (c'mon Fed-Ex.... any minute now..). None of these did I originally plan to get at launch, but eventually was compelled by one particular reason. For DC, being a big Soul-Edge fan, I couldn't stand missing out on Soul Calibur. For PSP (and this one I didn't change my mind til the day of.. luckily plenty of units to be found), it was Wipeout Pure, which was MORE than worth it. For 360, it was a matter of being sick of having to hunt and peck for decent HD content (satellite, network, or gaming) - I needed some HD gaming and Gran Turismo 4 wasn't cutting it any more.

Interestingly, I only feel REALLY compelled to hit launch on the first console of a generation. Like, I didn't feel the need to rush into PS2 at first because I had my DC. And I probably won't feel the need to get a PS3 at launch because of my 360. Guess in my mind its a matter of not being a "whole generation" behind. Silly - yeah, but its one of many things that somehow makes sense in my mind but not so much in most others'.

I think the last console launch I got was the Gamecube ( :lol , shoulda just waited a month for SSBM)...though I bought a PSP pretty close to launch. Maybe a week or two after? Other than the GBA (also at launch), every other console I have bought has been months/years after launch. Ussually after a price drop (or two). I am kinda itching for a X360 though for some reason, the hype has just sorta hit me all at once

I'm a "launch window" kind of guy. Standing in line for more than an hour for any one of these pieces of hardware would really take the thrill out of the experience of getting one for me. As much as I like to get most of the consoles as soon as they are available, if I have to go through hoops to get one, I'd rather just wait.

Only console I got at launch was SNES & DC.

Others usually a week or 2-3 months later once hype/bullshit dies down.

Got a 360 reserved...but....dunno. I really want one - but seeing the Samsung demo pods with their ultra crisp HDTV display and mind-crunching texturage on Kameo ect...then having to go home and play on a normal....looking like it makes sense to wait for HDTVs drop in price and get both next year.

I don't think I've ever bought a system at launch. Closest I bought to launch was the dreamcast (like a month after). I'm waiting for a new hardware revision of the 360 before I get one (same goes for the ps3).

That's how I am with every launch of a new system, I NEVER buy one at launch always wait at least 6 months for newer hardware revisions to come out (of course not announced), so I don't end up buying a system that's going to break down only after using it for a brief period of time. And I try to time my purchase with at least the 2nd generation of games coming out. Why buy a system at launch when usually the best games come out 2nd or 3rd generation?

Not to mention possible price drop to save a few bucks.

The only console launch I ever participated in was the Game Boy Advance launch in Japan. I was in Tokyo for TGS, and I don't even know if it was first day or not (doubt it), but I stood in line at Laox in Akihabara for like an hour waiting to buy one.

They only let you buy one at a time, so I got back in line again to buy one for my friend. I ventured to another store that had them, and thankfully, no line there, and they even had the Milky Blue color there (Laox only had them in white and purple by the time I got to the front of the line).

I loved it, though. Despite the non-lit screen, playing F-Zero Advance, SMB2, Kuru Kuru Kururin, and Konami Wai Wai Racing on that system was awesome. The SNES was one of my favorite systems of all-time, so I had to have the GBA ASAP. Since then, though, I've bought an SP, the newly backlit SP, and the DS.

Screen quality aside, the weight and landscape form factor of the original GBA is still my favorite.

i got the first playstation within the first month that it was out, and it still remains my least played system ever. I think i got a sega cd in the "launch period" also. i did try to get a ps2 at launch in a lonley wal-mart in a sleepy southwestern virigina town. it was cold and i think ended up killing a deer. but i didn't get a playstation 2 until a few years later when i was trying to move to ohio. i got a playstation and didn't move...yet.

The only launches I've participated in have been the GBA, GBA SP, and PSP launches. I regretted each one of them and was reminded each time why buying at launch is for suckers.

Yeah, I don't think I'll ever buy anything at launch again. My only launch purchase was the Dreamcast, which was nice and all, but even that doesn't make much sense to me in retrospect. I can't fathom dropping $400 for the 360 console.

Up to today, I was thinking the same way as most of the posters. But that whole ebay madness going on right now is very tempting. Although I probably end up doing nothing like this, just buying something to resell it. Probably because I'm a wuss.
But still: "You feel very greedy and sense gold!"

Only the DC.

Not too bothered missing this launch as there are (A) no new SEGA games and (B) I AM REALLY busy with work. I'm here day and night. I can't even imagine when I'd have time for videogames over the next month or two.

ok shit, if Cockles isn't getting one I suddenly feel absolutely normal about this.

Doesn't help matters in Europe Ridge Racer 6 is held back by EA.

12 player Ridge Drifiting on Live would have been the decider....PG3...just doesn't look exciting enough for me.

I've never bought a system at launch, will probably do it for the Revolution though but still I'm not sure.

I've participated in three launch days, the first one was N64, but didn't get it until a few weeks after launch (thanks to the extreme shortage, instead, we rented the system that day), after years of saving up for the system, and the second one was PS2, but I didn't buy the system until a month after it was released.

This will be the same case with Xbox 360.

And the third launch is, GC launch, and yes, I bought it the same day it came out.

I'm gonna do PS3 campout, depending if I have a job by then.

Lemme see...

NES: Was a kid, got it for Christmas.
SNES, N64 and PSOne: Got them on launch day without a preorder.
Dreamcast: Had a paid-in-full preorder. Only waited a half hour for it.
PlayStation 2: Didn't buy one for a good six months after it launched.
GBA SP: Same as above, but got it in minutes (I was working at the store)
GameCube: Got it a few weeks after it launched. My decision was I'd get it when I saw one in-store.
Nintendo DS: Christmas gift... My fiance snagged it on launch day.

I could never do the camping thing, personally. I have better things to do than wait in line for hours upon end surrounded by complete strangers. Sure, I could have entertained myself for 14-16 hours between my DS and SP, but I think my sense of self-worth would quickly diminish. :lol

With the 360 I've now been a part of 4 launches now:

DC
PS2
PSP
Xbox 360

I probably won't buy a Revolution or PS3 at launch.

I'm with you on the PS3, but not on the Revolution... I plan to have one reserved and paid-in-full. Fuck camping.

Genesis Launch, Saturn Launch, DC Launch and the PS1 Launch,
I remember being the first person to getting the Sega Genesis in my town. That was one of the best systems ever, and to this day I have fond memoreis of the Genesis. The Genesis is my favorite system, even over the NES and Master System. At the Saturn's Launch I payed $400 for the machine, after the Saturn I promised myself I would not pay $400 for a game machine ever again. The PS1 I traded in alot of Genesis games for it, and payed that payed off the pre order for the PS1. The reason I bought the PS1 I was seduced by the hype From Gamefans about the PS1, and while the PS1 is a good machine, I just regret trading one system to move up in the next Generation. That will never happen again. For the DC I saved up $600 for the machine and the games. Now the DC that was a leap in generation. Everyone was amazed by Soul Calibur, Sega NFL 2k, Powe stone, and Sonic Adventure.
This new Generation, I have just not been blown away. Plus I don't have the spare cash, and thier are too many older games to buy.
