Now that the Extended Hobbit Trilogy is all available, was it all worth it?

Great trilogy. Only the last film let me down, and yes there were flaws throughout all three but damn...they did a really good job.

It's sad to hear people saying they phone it in because if you watch any of the behind the scenes you can tell ALOT of time and passion was put into these movies. It does not matter how bad they may seem to you, or how bad they actually are...it's apparent love and care was put into them.

They're the Star Wars Prequels of our time:

Over-hyped and underwhelming, with not enough heart, far too much obvious CGI, laughable dialogue, one of the worst Mary Sues in recent memory (Tauriel) and relying solely on past-film nostalgia to please the fans rather than standing on its own merits.

Still actually better than the SW Prequels, since unlike Lucas Jackson actually knows how to direct actors and being based on existing source material is not fucking up canon nearly as much.

And yes, my EE of BotFA should arrive sometime next week

You couldn't say that for the script though.

Films needed to be shorter, not longer. So long and definitely not good.

You can chop the films up and they will still suck. The vision was just off with this film, too much franchise-ification and block busterization. Someone who respected the series could've given it 3 films. Instead it was Peter Jackson and co taking the safest route to a pay day. This trilogy was as shameless as the Transformers films in its goal.

Its quite obvious that the actors, especially the LotR veterans, are giving it their all, and I applaud them for that.

But the script, plotting, direction, SFX (with the obvious exception of Smaug), and cinematography all scream half-assed.

What? A ton of things have lots of love and care put into them. That doesn't mean the end result doesn't or can't suck. Sometimes you put your heart into something and you fail. The Hobbit trilogy is a good example of one of those things.

I enjoyed the films well enough, although I'm not sure if that's for the quality of the films themselves or because I was really, really enamored with the 48FPS look.

Like, seriously. I want that framerate available in a home version. I know it was divisive, but I'm pretty firmly in the "love it" camp.

I haven't watched any since the theaters, but the home version isn't 48fps? Only 24? Why?

Because either the Blu-Ray or the HDMI standard doesn't support it, IIRC. Certainly not in 3D, either. And given the lukewarm reception it got with critics, Hollywood's in no rush to make it possible.

I'm not sure why they won't just make a 2D version at 60Hz with a 2:1:1:1 pulldown or something. Might be jittery, but so basically was all home video until 24p became a thing, and I never picked up on it. I guess it really will end up being a "you had to be there" sort of deal.

I really liked the first one in spite of its problems but I'll contend that it had a billion issues.

I saw the second one and thought "well, it can't be any worse I guess"

lol

Of course they are not LOTR quality but I still quite like the first two films. Third one was bad, but I haven't watched the EE of that one yet so maybe there are some improvements.

All three films are still better than Star Wars Prequels by quite a huge margin.

The music was great as was martin freeman and smaug/gollum

Plus the practical stuff in the film like the props, sets, and costumes looked fantastic.

Scust at everything else Tho

I made it through the first two, bailed out of the third after 45 minutes.

Jesus christ is that thing dullsville

Fortunately, I will never watch the Extended versions. Watching the regular versions was enough to tell me Peter Jackson hit the cocaine hard. Like a lot. To the point of no return.

I still gush over the Lord of the Rings Trilogy. Built with love. Not cocaine.

Nah, no cocaine for PJ. He just had his stomach stapled. :)

I can't comment on the the second and third movies. I feel asleep in the theater a few times during the first movie though. It did not engage me, and my friends and I openly mocked it as we left the theater.

I liked the third one, too. I thought the Bilbo-Thorin relationship was very well done.

I'm watching the appendices now and it's just so sad seeing Andrew Lesnie all over the place. He died way too young.
