X (twitter) is now worth 9.4 billion

Somehow we've gone full circle and managed to convince conservatives to happily endorse billionaire rhetoricians masquerading as populists in order to help out their billionaire friends, all so we can dunk on gender pronouns together on twitter
There are GOOD billionaires, sometimes it takes a lot of personal wealth to achieve great things. When I'm a billionaire I intend to be as benevolent as possible :p

Hard to say that Musk is hurting humanity though. X functions basically as intended. SpaceX is amazing. Teslas, while not the environmentally best idea, are revolutionary in many ways. The Boring company, not so sure about that one. Starlink, will REVOLUTIONIZE communications, no doubt about that one. All them cell phone towers about to be obsolete and I bet in 10-15 years the internet of things will allow for distribution of highspeed wi-fi from a single sat receiver down through hundreds of devices to reach the deepest, darkest corners of the planet to become a ubiquitous service for everyone.

Well I hope he keeps on succeeding. We need people like him willing to take risks on technology and the fact that he triggers the right people is a plus for me

I held off joining Twitter for...15 years? This summer was the first time I seriously engaged with it and finally set up an account.

There is a cavalcade of bullshit on it every day. But mixed in with all that bullshit are nuggets of truth that I had never and would never have seen otherwise. I am glad that a platform exists that trusts the individual enough to come to their own conclusions when presented with a surplus of information, instead of pre-filtering information down to suit a narrative and lead an audience to the "correct" conclusion.

You can’t put a price on shaping the future of the United States of America and the world.

It’s been worth every penny, ten fold.

I'd say that's only a retroactive justification though. It wasn't part of his original intentions behind this whole deal, which is still rather questionable in terms of pure economics.

Of course, gaining power and influence can appear to justify many things in the moment, at least if you have no ethical or moral inhibitions.

A lot is going to depend on what he can actually achieve with said power and influence. Not what he promises, mind you, because his words and actions....aren't always equivalent to reality.

Musk quotes from October 2022:

"The reason I acquired Twitter is because it is important to the future of civilization to have a common digital town square, where a wide range of beliefs can be debated in a healthy manner without resorting to violence."

"I didn't do it to make more money. I did it to try to help humanity, whom I love. And I do so with humility, recognizing that failure in pursuing this goal, despite our best efforts, is a very real possibility."

Based on his record between now and that...I don't believe him. It's nice enough as PR, I suppose. Yet he's clearly put his thumb on the scales, not just once but several times.

The one thing I do hope for Musk however is that he slows down his ketamin abuse, that stuff warps your mind and I honestly feel like most of the crazy shit he says is after he's snorted a few lines.

As long as he strongarms/cajoles/bribes Trump into making it easier for more space exploration. Ultimately that'd be a greater long term good than most other shit.

The musk glazing here is hilarious.

The anti-Musk proselytizing in here is perplexing.

Much like anything, Musk is neither wonderful nor satan. He is capable of some great shit, and equally capable of being a fucking twat. I hope his better angels win out over the coming few years now he is in such a huge position of power.

Not even sure what that means. Trump uses people in order to get what he wants, and discards them when they are no longer useful to him ie, banon, stone, barr, pence, etc. Why would musk be any different? It wasn't long ago Musk was saying that Trump needs to disappear and while Trump was calling Elon a bullshit artist. They are in cahoots now only because it is mutually beneficial. Now that Trump got what he wanted, you can bet he will make musk and bezos fight for those government contracts since both were willing to bend the knee.

I remember wincing at this when it got reported on. Weird/dumb move to shut out the main guy making electric cars, in favour of the dudes still making the petrol ones.
Well, first of all he is one guy, dudes making petrol cars are many and overall they employ way more people. Also, more support for EVs means easier market for China, so in the end it will be Tesla, subsidised Chinese companies and nobody else. I don’t think it’s in the West interest to make authoritarian regime more powerful than it is.

Biden literally didn't invite the main EV car guy to a summit about EV cars. I'll leave everyone to think about how the consequences of that have played out.

Now that's the kind of friction that's just waiting for two personality cults to ignite.

Easier for space exploration? What's hindering it that could be changed?

This guy better stay far away from all politics. The shit was worth 50 billion when he bought it, it’s now worth 9. That’s all I need to know.

Stick to making stupid predictions, musk.

Au contraire.
Twitter turned out to be much more valuable for Elon than even 50 billion. In hindsight it was a genius move.

I'm excited that twitter doesn't let a federal bureaucracy talk it into calling legitimate news sources disinformation while banning their story now.
Yep, no problem at all with just directly hawking policy to richest donor. This is fine, everything is fine. Wholesale, out-in-the-open corruption as a matter of policy is awesome and good. Even better if you sell it to aspie weirdos who read Mencius Moldbug and who literally want to break it and crash the economy.
