Retail its a given: 360, PS3, PC. Percentages unknown.

Including Digital we dont know at all. It was the best selling steam game in history or something like that.
I don't know about best-selling, that must be HL2 or L4D2, but it was the fastest selling game in steam history if I recall correctly.
I'd assume 360 > PC = PS3. The game sold a lot on PC.
Perhaps it did better on PC than on PS3 if you count digital sales, but I think we'll never know. I don't remember Bethesda giving breakdowns of F3, NV or TESIV.

Cool, thanks. I understand most of that list well enough, but what is the 3rd party royalty payouts referring to?
It's the payout to the 3rd party publisher or developer if the game is MS published.
hypothetical example with fake numbers:
Live game costs 15 dollars and the 3rd party publisher gets 2/3 of the sale of every game. MS revenue would increase $15 for every game sale and their costs would increase $10 due to paying that 3rd party publisher their share. They don't just count what they net from each sale as revenue.

It's the opposite of how it works for retail, where the 3rd party publisher would take in 100% of the revenue from the wholesale price, then have a cost where they have to pay a royalty to the hardware manufacturer.

Dear Nintendo:

People buy your console if you have game for them.

2011 sucked for Wii games.
2012 looks to be worse.

Is it really that hard?

Was it really not possible to shit out a Pikmin, an Fzero, a Pokemon Stadium, a Wario game and an eternal darkness sequel?

Licorice-flavoured booze?
"Consumers bought just 6.3 million consoles last month, down from 8.4 million a year ago, Pachter noted."

So I'm guessing this is mainly down to the dramatically lower Wii and DS sales?

Seems like it's down to Nintendo as to why overall hardware sales are so low this year.

Makes you think, is CoD going downhill now? It's still going to sell millions but will it past Black Ops?

I think the primary COD crowd bought the game day one
and skipped school/work the next day to play.

Whereas the Just Dance crowd is probably primarily young kids. It's a perfect Christmas gift, hence the massive sales in December.

I don't think COD is going anywhere... yet.

I think this decline demands some research, since it really doesn't make much sense in a quality, quantity or media exposure overview.
Perhaps people are spending more money on annual smartphone/tablet upgrades + respective apps and games? I don't know, -21% seems too big a drop to me.

Or this gen being 5+ years old?

The Last of Us is going to be an interesting study. I'm trying to remember when a big new IP would be released 6 years after a console is out.

Uncharted has more mass appeal than Last of Us, and Uncharted is no sales hit. I don't see Last of Us reaching anyone but the usual ND fans.

Alright, I think we've gotten all the news we're going to get for a while, so I'm going to go play some games in a little bit.

If something comes up, feel free to mass PM me, charlequin, and Stumpokapow, as one of us will likely be on.

Unless it's like 4+ hours from now, at which point replace someone with duckroll.

Yea won't go anywhere but I just think it will sell less every new one now. Will take years(2 or 3 gens) for it to you know, be a NFS level. Time will tell.

PS3 is officially dead.

Horrible joke, right..................right?

Nintendo picked the best time to bail on this gen, MS might have an late-gen edge but even they are riding the chairlift back down the mountain. Sony you sure you don't want to rethink a successor, like, now?

You act as though Sony and MS don't have room for price cuts. The average selling price of both is closer to the launch prices last gen.

It's the payout to the 3rd party publisher or developer if the game is MS published.

Oh ok, I should have realized that, thanks man.

Zombie games usually sell great.

Dead Island, Left 4 Dead, and Resident Evil 5 were all multiplayer heavy though.

I think not having campaign co-op is actually a pretty risky idea for The Last Of Us, especially if there isn't a really robust multiplayer component.

I guess they could also go for at least 20+ hours of content and length to try and match the big selling singleplayer games from this year, but I don't get the impression they're doing that.

too many damn systems out there to choose from from a consumer standpoint!!

good grief

maybe the big 3 should only be allowed 1 console and 1 handheld system at anyone time PERIOD

Seems like it's down to Nintendo as to why overall hardware sales are so low this year.

I think it makes sense since the Wii drove most of the growth for the first few years so its decline would also bring down the industry.

They still have the 100 dollar card to play, and Mario Party 9 may help them stay afloat for the first half.

So what do we think the next step in PS3's 10 year plan should be?

Sony cut the price in 2011 by $50, but sales are down significantly year over year:

1.21M in December 2010 (down 11% compared to December 2009)
~936K in December 2011 (down ~23% compared to December 2010)

A couple of Sony suits mentioned recently about targeting the female market a bit more, didn't they?

It's such a disgrace that a brainless piece of shit as big as Just Dance 3 sells this much.

Brainless sells.

Last gen the brainless was GTA. This gen it's CoD, Just Dance, and Wii Sports.

Can you truly be happy that any of those series are getting more attention than quality games?

It's weird. It just doesn't seem to have captured the mainstream mindshare it needed. Great software lineup, but just missing that certain something....

I think it's the friend factor, at least in the US. Especially when you consider how popular CoD is over here.

Feel sad for Sony. :(

It really is unfortunate. Sure, earlier this gen you can pin-point why sales may have struggled, but Sony has been stellar the last few years and really deserve better sales than this.

Still keeping the amount of worthwhile games in the single digits, eh? ;3

Seriously, there's that and a far-too-long release of Xenoblade..that's it.

+ Mario Party 9.

Honestly thats already a lot better than the first half of 2011. They don't really need much considering Wii U will be releasing in the second half of the year.

For comparison, there were only four worthwhile games total released for Wii in 2011 and they were all released in the last two months: Rayman, MW3, Zelda, and Kirby.

As dumb as CoD has gotten, I don't think they've gotten to the point where you can wave your arms around like a jackass and be rewarded like you were Fred Astaire.
Is still fun. Yeah, it may not be "deep" , but still nice to see it selling well..along Call of Duty, Skyrim, etc. If anything, it shows that unlike last gen, there may be more people with game hardware that otherwise wouldn't be buying it. And who knows, if they'll be the ones playing ElderScrolls VII in a few years or so. Considering that many of us started moving a yellow circle that around a maze with a joystick/trackball; there's a beginning for everyone.

Licorice-flavoured booze?
Here

(Last years numbers)

Nintendo DS - 2.5 Million (-24%)
Wii - 2.36 Million (-38%)
Xbox 360 - 1.86 Million (+42%, best ever sales by 420k units)
PS3 - 1.21 Million (-11%)

See, it's Nintendo that are bringing down the overall hardware numbers this year.

"Consumers bought just 6.3 million consoles last month, down from 8.4 million a year ago, Pachter noted."

So were down 2.1 million, Wii is down to 1.06m so that's 1.3m there, and then we're yet to see the DS numbers which have most probably dropped dramatically also.

Most of the 360's sold over this time included gift cards ranging from 50-100 dollars(or had price reductions like during Black Friday). They haven't just started thinking about a price cut, they basically had one this holiday period.

Yes, the LA Times story also mentioned it.

Sales of consoles such as the Wii, 3DS, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 tumbled 28% on a dollar basis in December, according to NPD. Sales also were down on a unit basis despite major price cuts on several consoles, Pachter said.

The only way the Last of Us will put up respectable numbers, especially for a game of it's budget, is if Sony spends bucketloads marketing it.

If marketing could sell a turd like Heavy Rain, then it should have no problem pushing tLoU out the door.
