NPD January 2013 Sales Results [Up7: Wii U 57K (CNET), Vita ~35K, PS3 201K]

As I understand it, the Fire Emblem thing was at first a legit distribution issue where something major happened in the process and copies didn't go out as scheduled. Then something else happened in manufacturing which is far more their fault.

I am not adverse to buying digital games, so I have my copy. However, it sucks that so many potential new fans are being turned away due to these errors. Eventually those people are just going to buy something else. A busy march is around the corner.

We need to ensure the localization of SMTxFE dammit! :p

Here are my personal estimates. :) Except in the cases where figures are known, rounded to the nearest 5K.

Xbox 360: 281K
PS3: 200K
3DS: 145K
Wii: 100K
NDS: 70K
WiiU: 57K
PSV: 35K
PSP: 10K
PS2: 0K

I should go see how painful my predictions were. :(
Ok good, they're about the same as mine then.

I'll just post some estimated LTDs for those curious:

DS: 53,163,689
360: 38,261,373
PS3: 23,594,421
Wii: 40,902,501
3DS: 7,859,000
Vita: 1,312,500
Wii U: 942,000

Why wasn't Animal Crossing released this holiday? Did they expect Paper Mario and NSMB2 to be enough? And it's releasing all the way in June...

AC, Pokemon, Mario&Luigi, and other games will ensure 3DS has a good second half of the year. Next NPD has Fire Emblem which should help sales. They really should've released AC earlier though.

It was not just Paper Mario and NSMB2, though the latter was definitely a factor. The fact it was the highest-selling 3DS game month-by-month shows they might have been right, but they need to convince parents to buy a 3DS moreso than the children. Another NSMB will not get a parent to buy a 3DS for their child. Price and Pokemon are the gates that need to be opened.

The big issue was Nintendo filled the holiday lineup with casualware and tried the "I'm not a gamer" campaign to sell to the phone/tablet crowd. That blew up in their face. Art Academy, Style Savvy...it just was not driving software. In regards to casualware, Animal Crossing's big Japanese debut shows that it was that game that needed to release this holiday, not the other stuff.

The rate of posts in this thread per day exceeds the daily sale rate of Wii U in the entirety of the United States.

I can't help but think that even if DmC had been *godly* - Bayonetta quality gameplay with Enslaved level storytelling - it wouldn't of sold that many more units.

I'm just sort of depressed with where the $60 market is at these days.

With the trouble we're having figuring out why, exactly, DmC didn't sell (I imagine Capcom USA will be making another SO WHAT DO YOU THINK OF DEVIL MAY CRY HUH poll soon), Capcom's execs must have no idea what to make of this information.

Which sold on being quality games using a multi-billion dollar grossing IP.

I don't know if the US got any similar promotions, but Best Buy and Future Shop (in Canada) ran Arkham Asylum for $39.99 for the first week or so that it was out. They did the same thing with Just Cause 2 and (I think) Borderlands. That had to help get people on board.

I think this is borderline enlightened thinking, particularly if the publisher is the one driving the incentive.

DMC needed the reboot imho. BUT without any major controversy and a huge departure from the main character.

I'm sure we will see the franchise again in the future

Yeah, it definitely seems like a problem on both front. Some people also never received their preorder (I had 2 at 2 different place and one store didn't even get it!) and I had never seen something like that before.

It seems they shipped so few copies that every single retailers ran out of copies and bundles and have no idea when they will get more.

Even Atlus games are better distributed which is really something.

Hopefully potential customers are not burned by this.

Are January 06 numbers correct?
Code:
Jan-06 Jan-12
PS2	272,000 X360	281,000
GCN	66,000 PS3	200,000
XBX	89,000 Wii	100,000
[U]X360	249,000[/U] [U]WiiU	57,000[/U]
Total	676,000 Total	638,000

			3DS	145,000
PSP	179,000 NDS	70,000
GBA	172,000 PSV	35,000
[U]NDS	158,000[/U] [U]PSP	10,000[/U]
Total	509,000 Total	260,000

If so:
  • Home consoles this January are down 5.6% compared to January 2006.
  • Handheld consoles are down 48.9% compared to January 2006.
  • The XBOX 360 and PS3 combined are selling better than the PS2, GCN and original XBOX combined (+12%).

3DS needs a pricedrop to 129 for the OG model and 149/160 for the XL. Maybe even install some software on both models. Drop software prices across the board including the VC games. Brain Training should be 19.99 at most and maybe even installed on 3DS systems. Of course, maybe Nintendo is actually happy with these numbers but while we fret about Nintendo possiby missing the Wii U prediction by 2 million units, they will miss the 3DS HW shipment by possibly even more than Wii U.

Yes, those are the numbers I have for 2006. It's pretty eye opening what's happened to the handheld market.

It's a shame. The press reception was extremely enthusiastic. Fire Emblem is the second best reviewed game on Metacritic (not counting Cave Story which only has 4 reviews) after Ocarina of Time 3D. They couldn't have asked for a better opportunity to reinvigorate interest in the series.

There's room for both.

Edit: Incompetence and contraction, that is.

I'm sure both have happened, what I meant is that I'm not convinced the 3DS couldn't reach a baseline of 250k-300k a month if Nintendo handled it differently. Sure not DS or GBA peak levels but respectable. I'll guess we'll see with Pokemon whether the market is truly headed for near irrelevance.

Even with Nintendo's apparent shitting the bed with the Wii U's launch, you can't deny that the market is in a radically different state then it was in 2006.

It's a little surprising that Ni no Kuni is selling more in the west. I'm glad it is, but it's kind of surprising.

That means there's still a good market for really good JRPGs. Fans still want them.

Yeah, it is quite worrisome, but not entirely unexpected. Publishers need to find smarter ways to sell their games based on quality.

EDIT: What is most unfortunate is that this chases away localization for bigger games while at the same time platforms are moving in the direction region-locking and similar barriers.

I just thought about it some more and realised I forgot about the 5 week month. It's actually even worse when one takes that into account.

Code:
Jan-06 Jan-12
PS2	68,000 X360	56,200
GCN	16,500 PS3	40,000
XBX	22,250 Wii	20,000
X360	62,250 WiiU	11,400
Total	169,000 Total	127,600

			3DS	29,000
PSP	44,750 NDS	14,000
GBA	43,000 PSV	7,000
NDS	39,500 PSP	2,000
Total	127,250 Total	52,000

  • On a per week basis home consoles are down 24.5% when the 360 and Wii U launches are included; handhelds are down 59.1%.
  • PS3+360 sold 9.9% less than PS2+GCN+XBX. PS3+360+WII sold 8.8% more.

wow at that FFXIII to FFXIII-2 drop. I guess FFXIII was really that bad.

price drop might just help for month or two,I really don't see it help that much.

NA market just moved from gaming handhelds it seems (but not completely like Japan and consoles).

Wii did quite impressive.

Was it worth it, Capcom? Was it worth spitting in the eye of your die hard fans? Was it worth making a game no living soul asked for? Was it fucking god damn worth it? You'll be lucky to hit that 1.2 mill mark, ya know, the mark you've changed 3 different times... yeah. Good luck with that. Oh and thanks for needlessly killing off one of my favorite franchises because you wanted that mythical casual gaming audience that doesn't buy these types of games you fucking morons.

*pops in DMC HD collection*

Well since NPD numbers are here I can finally say it:

DmC DahBOMBA!!

Seeing NPD first month sales I'd say Capcom needs to check again their predictions....

Bwahahaha, Ni no Kuni beat both individual SKUs of DmC. Bububu the industry is shrinking! It isn't a sign of a lack of interest, no game could possibly do better!

creamsugar's information is always 100% correct.

So glad he's on GAF to give everyone a window into the mechanics of the industry.

Angry Birds Trilogy was around 500k right?
That's a pretty good debut for Paper Mario Sticker Star then, I'm guessing it'll be around Super Paper Mario's final when everything's settled.

Kind of a shame that Kid Icarus Uprising is only around the 300k to 500k mark though.

Black ~ 83%
White ~ 17%

200k < PS3 < 250k and more closer to 200k
100k < Wii < 150k and more closer to 100k
100k < 3DS < 150k and more closer to 150k
50K < DS < 100K and more closer to 50k
PSP ~ 10k

Last January the 3DS sold around 250k
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=34999454&postcount=317 made through calculations, and now the 3DS has less than 150k, and yet people are still saying that the 3DS is doing really well. Especially after Nintendo have lowered the expectations for both hardware and software. Handheld gaming is shrinking every single year in the west.

How in the hell did that happen?!

So that's why we got no Nintendo PR. Not even a decent 3DS result to spin. I guess having only Paper Mario as a holiday title would do that. Not releasing Animal Crossing for the holidays was a big mistake. And then there's still that software price issue.

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

Ni No Kuni selling that 115k makes me so happy. Hopefully it can get to a LTD of 300-400k and justify a sequel. A sequel that has an older character would do significantly better.
Outsold DmC makes it even sweeter.

Lol at the WiiU. I always thought it would be the gamecube 2.0 but not like this. Not like this man. The hardware is not selling and neither is the software.

I also do not see panic nintendo happening because it already happened. We had that nintendo direct announcing all those amazing games but with no release dates. It nintendo reveals any more games then they will have a poor E3 showing and that is not what they want with PS4 and 720 round the corner. Nintendo need to announce release dates of their big games and not just their presence. They need to release several of these titles this year ideally with a price cut. Its important to stress that the sales will improve only when these games are released so Nintendo has to sit through several months of this.

I just do not see nintendo equalling ps4 or 720 especially if their mortifying third party support continues.

I just want to say that I do not think the WiiU or Vita are dead. There just barely alive though.

Also NI NO KUNI made my day :)

Beast mode!

Nintendo are lucky that the Vita is around to draw attention away from the 3DS' performance.
It also helps that the DS is actually doing well in Japan and parts of mainland Europe :p

But I agree the 3DS numbers are pitiful.

o snap.gif

OP hasn't updated any PR by any yet. MS release any yet?

I don't expect Sony to release any as expected.
I believe there was one for Microsoft but I'm not sure. Sony...well they never release PR considering how Vita has been doing. Even combining PSP numbers wouldn't paint a good picture. Perhaps Nintendo could have combined the Wii and DS families for ultimate spin, ha.
