NPD Top Selling Current-Gen Titles (As of Aug 2004 - FINALLY INCLUDING GBA!)

As a warmup for tomorrow, here are all current gen sales over 500k, including GBA. No Dreamcast, sorry :) No arguments, I just don't have the numbers)

Enjoy :D

Interestingly, there are only 30 titles over 500k for the GBA

The breakdown of titles is:

PS2 105
GBA 30
XBX 25
GCN 19
-------------
Total # of titles over 500k = 179

BTW, If I'm missing anything, let me know (I don't think I am)

So it's September's tomorrow. Apart from BO3 what'll be the big games being argued over?

Fable. Pikmin 2. Donkey Konga (I think it has a week in there).

Wow, Luigi's Mansion is a hair away from besting Splinter Cell XBX...

looks like the only 2 games on XBox that will have outsold the skinny plumber will be Halo and Halo 2...

Looks like online gaming just couldn't do it for these two...

really didn't work out at all, significant drops from their 1st iterations, each selling less than 50% of what the originals did...

I'm not sure if drops this drastic are normal for sequels though...

Besides, wasn't the XBot chant around here that online gaming would help games garner additional sales. Funny when people say Pokemon and Mario Kart online would sell millions easily because of online, when in fact it might just confuse and alienate casual consumers that may not realize it's not necessary and online gaming is only optional...

Thx SC... both should easily hit 500K. Especially after getting hit with the "Platinum Choice" moniker.

I'm not sure if drops this drastic are normal for sequels though...

PGR was a launch game. It was one of the best choices of games to add to the bundle. SC was a holiday sensation with little competition.

It's not like sales have been bad. Developers would kill for a 400k hit.

IMO, there's more factor than online.

The fact that Splinter Cell 1 was a fresh new game, released only on Xbox for a moment, surely helped. Same thing for PGR, and was one of the first racing game to be released on Xbox.

I hope you're joking, or that you own some parts of Microsoft, because there's absolutely no point of wanting Halo 2 selling more than GT4, both will be good games.

He's referring to Halo passing GT3 in cumulative sales next month (which it probably will).

Tekken 4 is close to outselling VF4 2:1. I remember having an argument with a Sega fan on this board who was sure that T4 won't sell better than VF4.

SC: PD didn't have the hype SC did and PGR2 was hammered by NFSU.

Thanks for the numbers! It's a shame some people will assume these are worldwide stats, though.

It'd be easy to think such a thing, because that's a shitload of games right there.

Ninja Gaiden didn't break 500k. Thats a fucking crime, probably due to stupid reviewers overstating the difficulty.

Damn game is not that hard people, not at all.

As of August:

XBX NINJA GAIDEN 492,311

So don't despair! The crime is solved! 500K will be broken, this month or next. :D

I have a friend who is a casual gamer who gave up and traded it in 5 minutes after getting to the first boss and getting his ass handed to him. Some people have no patience for challenging games (challenge meaning: Waaah, it takes more than 1 attempt)

I just started the game, damn it is hard.. But i can definitely see why people would give up on the game - there should at least be a quick continue option for bosses. I got killed by the first boss 5 times, and it got annoying having to load up a save from several rooms away that many times.

I don't think it was the difficulty that was the problem exactly, it was the learning curve. Why is it the first two levels were the hardest in the game? I think starting off easy is a good idea, even for the hardcore. Viewtiful Joe is also too hard for some people, but I think the learning curve was much better in that game. I can't remember, was there even an "easy" difficulty available to choose from in Ninja Gaiden?

It doesn't help to go to extremes either for or against online gaming. Some may have overstated the importance of online gaming in the short term, but going the opposite direction to suggest it would befuddle and alienate gamers does not follow from the evidence either.

No there wasn't an easy option available in Ninja gaiden, and since when are the first 2 stages the hardest ? The games most difficult boss is Alma and the hardest stage is probaly the catacombs, followed by stage 4. The only 2 points in that game really where you had to adjust the way you played...

Alma wasn't that bad, but I'll agree she was the hardest in this game. But next to her, Nunchuk boy and Horsie man were the hardest for me the first time I faced them vs. the first time I faced the other bosses. The first 2 STAGES weren't the hardest, but aside from Alma, the first 2 BOSSES arguably were. I found the difficulty very uneven in the sense that I would sweat my way through a stage or tough boss only to find the next few stages were insanely easy in comparison. For example, why is Alma's second form one of the easiest bosses in the game?

I find it interesting that of the top 20 (too lazy to count more below that), only 3 games are really "story" based (FFX, KH, and MGS2). Not to say the other games don't have stories (GTA3/VC and Halo clearly do), but thier stories are rarely pointed to as being the main reason people play those games.

Btw, the GBA numbers dont exactly gel with mine -- if I had to guess I'd say they were missing 2-3 months of sales somewhere along the line. I know for a fact my Pokémon ones are 100% accurate since they've been in the top 10 for every month since their release and all of the other first party titles should be as well. Ruby sits firmly at #10 for this generation in terms of units sold which would mean Nintendo has numbers 8, 9 and 10.

For reference, the correct numbers are (just by units in this case rather than my usual $ as well):

Code:
SUPER MARIO ADVANCE 2	2,251,797
POKEMON RUBY 2,156,813
SUPER MARIO ADVANCE	2,032,696
POKEMON SAPPHIRE 1,943,114
MARIO KART: CIRCUIT 1,887,409
MARIO BROS 3: MARIO 4 1,285,170
ZELDA: LINK TO PAST 1,263,364
YOSHI'S ISLAND:MARIO3	1,102,421
KIRBY: NIGHTMARE	911,285
METROID FUSION 897,391
DONKEY KONG COUNTRY 885,437
MARIO & LUIGI SAGA 825,303
GOLDEN SUN 743,002
WARIO LAND 4 717,760
FINAL FANTASY TACTICS 590,047

btw, where's Sonic Advance 2? The title was in the top 10-15 GBA games for a long time, and after adding up the numbers, it went over 500K, so unless I missed it, it should be there

Yeah. What the hell is with these numbers?

They say: METROID FUSION 575,687

You say: METROID FUSION 897,391

That's a huge difference. The rest are off by a few thousand, but this is 300,000!

btw, where's Sonic Advance 2? The title was in the top 10-15 GBA games for a long time, and after adding up the numbers, it went over 500K, so unless I missed it, it should be there
Sonic Advance 2 is over 500k also... I dunno what's up? :/

Yeah. What the hell is with these numbers?

They say: METROID FUSION 575,687

You say: METROID FUSION 897,391

That's a huge difference. The rest are off by a few thousand, but this is 300,000!

I don't have access to the listing at work, but off the top of my head, I'd say that my supposed GBA LTD listing I received might be lacking a little. I'll report back as soon as I have more info. :D

I dunno how his Fusion number is so off. It's respective LTD totals from March, June and August are as follows:
March: 872,045
June: 888,443
August: 897,391

For reference, Metroid Zero Mission is at 382,611 units sold as of the end of August.

Lets just say I got some April 2004 LTD totals that had Metroid Fusion @ 555,754. I just added those numbers to my subsequent MTD totals. Not having GBA numbers is why I've never included them. before.
