Nvidia unveiling next-gen GPU June 21 (possible glimpse into RSX)

So what's the prevailing wisdom? That the RSX is a souped up G70 or that it's more like a cross between the G70 & G80?

Graphics manufacturer to present its new chip and give live demonstrations at San Francisco launch event in three weeks.

Nvidia has revealed that it will announce its next-generation GPU on June 21 at a launch event in San Francisco. An invitation sent to Nvidia partners, analysts, and members of the press promises invitees an "evening of full-throttle entertainment" filled with "revolutionary technologies, hot 3D content, and exciting gaming action as we unveil our next-generation GPU."

Festivities will open with cocktails and a case-mod contest before the start of the scheduled press conference with live product demonstrations. The evening will conclude with a reception including hands-on product demonstrations and a Battlefield 2 LAN Party. If Nvidia's next-gen GPU launch plans sound familiar, it might be because Nvidia announced its current generation GeForce 6 series in a similar, but more public fashion, at a GeForce LAN Party in San Francisco last year.

Nvidia has indicated in the past that its next-generation desktop GPU will be similar to the GPU designed for the Sony PlayStation 3.

What nvidia hasn't declared is which next gen gpu the rsx is likely to mimic. As is well known, these companies have multiple teams working on multiple projects concurrently, all of which fall under next-gen banner. :)

Got 10 bucks that says that when this new card ships it will only be close to the RSX but still cost almost twice as much as the PS3. The card after that will beat the RSX a year after launch.

Eh, I'm not going to upgrade for several years. I feel a major change in PC architecture coming if Cell delivers. At least the several core stuff with 64-bit software to support 64-bit chips, if not a divergence from x86 architecture. We might also see physics processor integrated into new video cards.

Just look at how little x86 processors have been advancing the past few years. The best Intel chip now is only like 10-20% faster than two years ago.

The major change in system architecture is dual core CPUs, wait until you don't have to mortgage the house to buy a dual core Athlon 64, then grab one.

Cell based jiggery pokery in mainstream Windows PCs is rather far off.

With GPUs, wait until you have a PC game that runs like poo, upgrade your card until it doesn't. Here is wisdom.

If you have the current gen nVidia or ATI card, everything runs just fine right now.

The nvidia engineers have already admitted as much.
