NX Controller Rumor [Up5: Original was fake, and thus this is too]

The PS4 one is decent in my opinion

It's trash. It was even worse before they limited it to 15 items, it just went on endlessly. Terrible. I hope Nintendo stays well clear of a design like that.

Scolling buttons wouldn't make it any better either. A nice, simple and organised UI would be best. I don't actually mind the WiiU one to be honest.

The specific numbers matter when you try to make an argument based only on the said numbers. Otherwise the argument is flawed from the start.

What matters (to me) is that the controller's screen will primarily be used for user interface mechanics. There are two parts to the post - field of view and input, and he's right - if the thing is 16:9 then it'd be awful - but we don't know that. It could be 21:9 or 24:9, but we have no way to tell that right now. Just inference.

What we can infer with confidence though, is that this thing, being a home console, would be better utilized as the secondary interface.

That can be implied apart from the resolution of the thing.

Much of the complaining about the controller I've seen is how cramped the field of view is, when we've never actually see a game run on it. I have very little reason to believe that we'll be looking at that smaller screen the entire time when the bulk of the action is going to be on the TV.

Ehh... It's not terrible. I kinda preferred the PS3 where everything stayed put. Not a bit fan of the most recent used app jumping to the front of the line. While it is convenient, it makes my want for organization go crazy. That being said, the 3ds or DSi menus were not great either.

Do we have any idea on the potential cost of those Sharp screens? I think it's important that they hit a decent price range and one of my concerns is if this is the controller it will cause the cost of the NX to be higher than they would like.

I cannot wait for when this is revealed as real and Nintendo fans are scrambling to defend button-less controls, the same ones most have bashed for years.

It will be delicious.

More than a Wii U tab , i'd wager, which will probably be eating into the console budget.

I think we know what that means.

But why? Why take the performance hit just for some peripheral pixels that will be obscured by hands?
Think about the way of rendering VR games. The middle part you look at (16:9) is being rendered in full resolution. The parts you don't look at, left and right, are rendered more blurry or not at full resolution.

FWIW

A new user on Reddit is claiming to be leaking a scan of the Nintendo Internal Developer handbook for the NX

The black areas are watermarks, allegedly.

No. It's not. I love my PS4 but the menu is the absolute worst thing about it. Give me the 3DS/Wii U system of like 15 choices on the screen at once.

"Pocket Console?"

"Button Images?"

Uh oh.

For some reason, I'm totally expecting Nintendo to go back to DSi-style linear menu as the main menu mode (unlike on 3DS, where it's present but optional and kind of forgotten).

We've evolved past linear menus these days.

I swear Nintendo, if you don't have folders available on day 1...

I feel like there's already some mental gymnastics being performed the argue the appeal of this thing when it's a categorically bad idea, honestly.

There are many, many Nintendo fans in this very thread stating how much they would hate for Nintendo to go this route. Stop.

You "infer" this based on no fact. That's a personal opinion. Which is fine. But has nothing to do with the post you quoted initially.

This isn't intended for watching the game's action. It's more like the second screen on the DS. Nintendo realized that the screen on Wii U's pad was too much, but the second screen on the DS is useful enough as it is.

...?

It has at least 50% to do with the post I quoted, yo. Why you trying to pick a fight?

I guess it's fine for me since I only have like 8 games for my PS4 right now. I could see it becoming terrible once you start getting like 20+.

What kind of shit TOC formatting is that?! No way it is an official document.

I swear Nintendo, if you don't have folders available on day 1...

I've read an article which described a theory that no console manufacturer enables folders on consoles until there will be enough games to store at them in general, because using folders with small amount of games makes the system's library look barren

I'm not a fan of touch controls but that's less to do with button presses and mostly to do with virtual analogue sticks which never work well.

If this has two analogue sticks, I'm okay with that.

I'm a Nintendo fan and I think this could be a cool successful system if implemented correctly. Blew your mind eh?

I wish the leaker would put it side by side with a vita. I'd like to have a rough idea of how big the screen is.
The device looks small.

People claiming that a device they haven't tried out will be garbage are just as ridiculous as those claiming said device will work perfectly before trying it.

And I find that more obnoxious than delicious...

I've asked a few times and got no answer. No one seems to really care about the reality of all this.

They just keep throwing out fantasy features like it doesn't cost anything. All of which is super pricey. Cutting edge screens with cutting edge haptic feedback and or tactus like buttons can't possibly be cheap, even at scale. It just seems way too expensive. The Wii U Gamepad alone cost upwards of nearly 1/3 to 1/2 of the Wii U price point and people are coming up with all sorts of stuff for this NX controller that could be significantly more advanced than that.

I can't imagine what something like this would cost. Seems way too expensive. Unless it's also a fully functioning handheld on its own then the pricing is going to be high or the console itself is going to be very limited power wise again, which I don't have a big problem with but possibly not the smartest move on their part.

I'm still wondering how they can get away with not having pressure sensitive triggers akin to the PS4 or Xbox 360. Nintendo out right ignored them for the Wii U game pad for the sake of two basic buttons, seriously hindering the pads potential for racing and FPS titles. If this device actually turns out to be a legit home console controller then entire genres could suffer. Having to put up with such significant compromises for the sake of portability just doesn't seem worthwhile when such a risk is at hand. Hopefully they are included along with a grip attachment or else this thing is an absolute bust along with the long list of other potential issues at a glance.

Scroll wheels could work in the same way as pressure sensitive triggers..especially if they are motorised (as the patent suggested). Instead of depressing/releasing a trigger, how far you turn the wheel determines how fast your car would go...let it go and the motor rotates it back to zero. In fact you could control your speed while going forward or reversing just depending on which direction you turned the wheel.

If you wanted you could use the other scroll wheel as the car steering wheel (as once again, if it's motorised it should be able to move/return to a central position.. just like a real steering wheel would). You could have full control over a car without even touching an analogue stick or trigger.

I got bored and tried to make renders of the rumored leaked NX controller based on the pictures for people that want to use it.

One whole controller with a blank background
and one with a background and a clear screen.

UNLEASH YOUR IMAGINATION NEOGAF.
