With games always being a balance of art, function, form and many other factors. They can change during the development cycle, as I have not done one in a while a look back at the previews helps us understand some of these battles in the background. From its 2019 Cinematic to the 2020 Gameplay, I compare then side by side, top to bottom, X1X & Series X and more. Was it all improved? downgraded or something else entirely? Click in and watch to find out.

That was a pretty informative video. Some improvements, some things cut back.

Would have liked it if NXGamer used the SX version in Quality mode for the intro comparison, not the One X version.

2020 to 2021 sees a lot of improvements. Which is nice.

Halo is about gameplay you don't tell gamers to worry about graphics with Halo.

As just a 'passing' fan of the overall franchise, I love the game play in this game. The open-world nature pairs well with Halo combat instead of just linear corridors IMO.

Interesting video. An attempt at a TL;DW: Game looks worse than the 2019 render target, but better than the 2020 gameplay reveal. Main issue is lighting/alpha effect quality which makes the game look a bit flat.

I absolutely loved halo infinite and thought the game was incredible myself, genuinely the game was I have had the most enjoyment with in many years.

I also read the interview with Staten & Ross and apparently up to 2/3 of the game was cut, it's makes me wonder what their vision could've been, if fully realised.

Hopefully with the upcoming expansions, they can hit what they were aiming for.

I also wonder if infinite will abandon Xbox one in the upcoming years.

This is such bullshit.
Halo was always graphics powerhouse
What? Never seen Halo as a graphic powerhouse. Granted i didn't really liked it that much and only played 1 and 2, but graphic powerhouse it is not. Gears of War was the graphic powerhouse.

What? Go have a look how halo 3,4 and 5 looked when it come out

Good analysis, I was hyped but it didn't deliver for me, should've been better.

More importantly I find the open world gameplay underwhelming. Too little wildlife and forts feels mostly the same with the same enemies, there are audio logs and some forerunner artefacts but 10 hours in I've still not noticed anything worthwhile to search for that would make it rewarding to go explore. Reminds me of Horizon Zero Dawn, but there are no cool enemies roaming about.

I guess you weren't around for the lol halo 3 is only 600p and look at those humans faces.

no matter what halo 3 was doing that was revolutionary, hdr lighting and full campaign recording that could be stopped paused and rewound at any time, you still had it being ripped constantly.

Edited due to stupid original wording.

It was kinda of a powerhouse for the first 2 games and maybe halo 4, the remaining titles were pretty meh graphically and were heavily criticized, especially halo 3 and 5, and osdt\reach were never graphic showcases in the slightest.

Not that i'm excusing 343 for the middling graphical aspect of infinite of course.

The gameplay loop is amazing and fun, but the game as a whole has a very repetitive structure with mundane side quests. After the first 4 hours of the game, it does feel like they ran out of ideas. And it became a repetitive grind fest of capture this fob, destroy this fort, find this spartan core.

And the graphics are really really underwhelming nothing screams next gen, after i have seen the digital foundry tech review i was expecting something amazing but sometimes it looks flat out early xbox one gen game.

Game turned out great, I'm sure they said a next gen Ray Tracing update would arrive at some point which would sort some of the issues.
The 2020 gameplay was running on a PC anyway.

It looks ok, nothing to write home about. And the open world is kinda meh, mostly busywork. But the darn gameplay is better than ever and makes up for everything.

Literally every high profile game released at the time. I guess I was wrong anyway. As pointed out by some users
I don't think you're completely wrong, I think there's a bit of revisionist history when it comes to Halo's graphics

Halo 1 and Halo 4 were the standouts for their times but Halo was never a terrible looking game

I think you were thinking of the time Halo 2 first got revealed and at that moment in time, with that reveal, it was a graphic power house. stencil shadows, dynamic light sources, amazing set peices, it left the audience stunned that the Xbox was producing those visuals.

of course that whole thing proved to be not doable on a real retail xbox and it all got scraped and downgraded to the not so hot looking Halo 2 that we got. i'd say from that point on no one considered Bungie or Halo a graphic power house.

Halo 4 looked great, 343 did a great job on the visuals of that game, but then 5 came and it showed us that it was just a one off.

When Halo 3 came out people complained it looked like up-rezzed Halo 2
Its true. Someone from Sony's Liverpool HQ even updated the Halo wikipedia page. It probably was one employee who spent too much time on internet forums, and has nothing to do with the Liverpool HQ. But for those wondering here is the edit and here is another one from the same IP.
Regardless it was a gamefaqs tier "meme" back then. Even though it was not a graphical showcase unlike Gears of War, Halo 3 became a cultural phenomenon.

Halo was always graphics powerhouse

I mean kinda no .. right ?

Halo stopped being considered a graphical power house as soon as the first reports of Halo 3 not being in HD started popping up. It's no different than what we see now, if the game doesn't meet a resolution metric, it's terrible in a lot of peoples eyes visually.

Reach was maligned for its terrible ghosting.

Halo 4 clawed some points back, that game was a 360 showpiece.

Halo 5 was also received kinda meh visually, but praised for its 60 FPS focus.

To me, whenever I recall past things about Halo, it's almost always people talking about the game play first.

Console kiddies thought Halo CE was a graphics powerhouse, lol. But they didn't know any better, and it did have great art design.

I always found Gears of War to be the graphical showpiece on Xbox.
