A school in New York state has apologised after receiving complaints after a student recited the US Pledge of Allegiance in Arabic.

The school's foreign language department organised for the pledge to be read in a different language each day for a week.

Complaints were received from residents who lost family in Afghanistan and from Jewish parents, an official said.

Neither the US nor New York state have an official language.

The school district superintendant, Joan Carbone, told the Times Herald-Record newspaper that the Arabic pledge has "divided the school in half" and that she had received numerous complaints.

A statement from the district apologised "to any students, staff or community members who found this activity disrespectful" and said the reading was intended to "promote the fact that those who speak a language other than English still pledge to salute this great country".

An Arabic-speaking student read the pledge during morning announcements at Pine Bush High School in Pine Bush, New York, on Wednesday.

Officials said the school's foreign language department organised for different pledge translations to be read in celebration of National Foreign Language Week.

Many students reportedly shouted their disapproval during the recitation, and later complained on social media.

Later in the afternoon, the school's principal made a school-wide announcement to explain why the pledge was read in Arabic and to apologise for those who took offence.

Ms Carbone said the pledge would only be read in English in the future.

The school's student leader, Andrew Zink, who is in charge of the morning announcements, told the local newspapers that he knew the reading would attract controversy.

He permitted it to go forward, because he believed it was "the right thing to do".

"All Americans who value our nation's history of religious and ethnic diversity should be concerned" by the reaction and subsequent apology, said Sadyia Khalique, a spokeswoman for the New York chapter of the Council of American-Islamic Relations.

I find this all a bit disturbing, and I'm disgusted by the fact that the school apologized to the xenophobes and racists that complained about this.

Edit: Damn, beaten while I was typing it out, mods please close

Edit2: Nevermind :p

If they read it in different languages, I don't see a problem. It's not like the school forces you to say the pledge anyway.
The school shouldn't have apologized, and the parents who complained could go fuck themselves.

What is wrong with translating the Pledge into another language? This just seems like trying to paint all people who speak arabic as non-American.

Lol. That's amazing. Isn't that kinda dehumanisation? The language of the enemy etc etc.

Man shit like this pisses me off so much. I spent 10 months in Afghanistan and 11 in Iraq and I for sure didn't do it so people back home can silence others based on the language that they speak. For fucks sake whatever happened to the United States being a melting pot?

Sorry, I just get so riled up when idiots pull the whole "this is America, speak English!"

People who are offended are a bunch of assholes. It's kinda fucked up that they think America is at war with the entire Middle East...

1- what does Arabic have to do with Afghanistan.

I saw the other thread and was kind of confused as to why it was being read in Arabic, but reading...

The school's foreign language department organised for the pledge to be read in a different language each day for a week.

... makes me wonder why it's even an issue at all. Seems like a pretty cool way to promote diversity and what the United States of America is all about.

The school has nothing to apologize for; they have done nothing wrong.

This makes no sense, they don't speak Arabic in Afghanistan. I am disappointed the school felt the need to apologies.

The most troubling part of this is not just the spineless behavior of the school administrators, it's that through their apology they are sending a message to that poor Arabic speaking student that he/she did something wrong. Fuck these guys.

The school did nothing wrong and shouldn't have apologised. Arabic is just a language like any other. Just because some major idiots happen to speak it means the language should be taboo? Fuck off.

The funny part is that they don't even speak Arabic in Afghanistan. The majority languages in that country are Pashto and Dari, which more closely resemble Persian.

I think they handled it well. It's a non-apology for a non-issue; "sorry we offended you" is exactly the right response.

I don't think they should have apologized for that, it's an admission of having done something that is a cause for offence. There should be no reason for anyone to get offended by the pledge being recited in Arabic, and if someone does get offended it's their own problem for being xenophobes and/or racists(the two tend to go hand in hand most of the time).

There should be no apology, and they should embrace diversity. Xenophobes just need to get over themselves.

/headtable... words fail me... argh... and once more we have people caving to this BS... Once more proving my lack of faith in humanity is very well founded.

I hate that I can't watch the damn news anymore because I am constantly reminded how much farther as people we have to go. Also, screw just saying the pledge in Arabic, they should be having classes on the histories and cultures of the peoples (I say peoples because just in Afghanistan alone there are dozens of ethnicities and almost as many languages) that we are currently fighting this war WITH. Damn, we really are not even fighting the Afghan people.

This here country of ours is a melting pot, you see. Yes indeedy, one big, all inclusive melting pot. Open to all.

You just have to be exactly like us, I guess.

Really don't see a problem with Arabic here. People need to get over themselves.

Wow this is so dumb, what does a student speaking a different language have to do with you loosing someone in Afghanistan? School apologizing was so dumb, and only reinforced their xenophobic attitudes. New York Stays loosing this week.
