Yeah, I've seen the previous NYC tourist threads, but I'm looking for some more specific advice here...

Anyway, I'm heading up to NYC on Sunday, and I'm planning on a museum visit, probably in Manhattan (and if one of the museums I'm listing isn't in Manhattan, pardon my ignorance).

What I'm thinking about
Museum of Modern Art (never been there)
Museum of the Moving Image
Museum of Sex (no, really, and not because it's OMG PRON) - It does sound like it might be kind of small for what I'd have to pay to get in (about $14), though.

Any opinions? Other recommendations?

Museum of Sex is lackluster and overall, boring.

Check out the Whitney, and I'd recommend the Guggenheim simply for the architecture. As a 2 for 1, the Metropolitan Museum of art is about 10 blocks, walking distance, away.

The Guggenheim is fantastic. Last time I was there Repeating patterns was the main exhibit, at the top of the main spiral was this huge canvas that from a distance looked like black carpet but once you got close you saw that it was actually thousands of dead flies glued onto the canvas.

Go to the Hayden Planetarium. The new(ish, at this point) Rose Center is spectacular.
Been there before; I've also been to the Natural History Museum.

What does the Museum of Television & Radio have in the way of actual exhibits? The main selling point seems to be the TV consoles...

Well the main selling point is not consoles, but they have the largest catalog of tv shows on file. Basically the way it works, is you get there early, u go to the front desk, and make an appt to use their library. Once you get to the library, u can pick either (3) 1hr shows or (6) 1/2 shows to watch. Most of the people in there are TV buffs or students.

Also, they have seminars and sometimes they have special month long tv celebrations. Or you can go and watch a bunch of I love Lucy episodes and then you and the other members in there, discuss them. Its really a cool place.

Even though they've been recommended already, I'd also go with the Guggenheim, The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art.

The Guggenheim is almost worth it just for the building itself. The permanent collection is fantastic and they almost always have a really great special exhibit of some sort. When I was there this past November it was a rather unsettling Mayan exhibit.

The Met is basically just down the street from the Guggenheim. So if you're not planning on taking your time, you can probably see large chunks of both in a day. Of course, if you're an art and/or history buff like I am, you could probably waste days in the Met without seeing everything. It also almost always has some really good special exhibits on top of the already expansive permanent collections. The only real downside is that the ancient Roman/Greek collection won't be available in it's entirety until 2007.

The Museum of Modern Art was farily recently reopened after being being extensively renovated. The new design is really beautiful, and does a much better job of showing off the collection. It's also around twice as large as it used to be, so much more of the permanent collection is on display at once now than was before.
