NZBMatrix, one of the leading Usenet indexing services, has shut down voluntarily. The website’s owners explain that it has become increasingly difficult to operate in a business where copyright holders vigorously protect their content. A large takedown notice from Hollywood’s movie studios as well as issues with payment providers are cited as reasons for NZBMatrix to throw the towel.
With millions of users a month NZBMatrix was one of the major Usenet indexing services. The site was particularly popular in Denmark, Australia and the UK.

While there are still many alternatives to NZBMatrix around, it’s become increasingly clear that copyright holders are determined to wipe Usenet clean bit by bit.
The End...

It is with our regret to announce that NZBMATRIX has closed.

We have had to make this decision due to a very large takedown request from a company called Wiggin LLC. These represent the following: Federation Against Copyright Theft Limited ("FACT"), Paramount Home Entertainment International Limited; Sony Pictures Home Entertainment Limited; The Walt Disney Company Limited; Twentieth Century Fox Film Company Limited; Universal Pictures (UK) Limited; Warner Bros. Entertainment UK Limited.

As everyone is aware we are DMCA/Takedown notice compliant, and always have been.
Once this notice is completed we are left with an impossible task of policing our indexing bots. Even then it won't stop there, there will be follow-up notices etc.

Coupled with this is problems with payment providers, we have been through pretty much everyone out there, in the end they all pull out.
There are massive server/bandwidth costs to pay, with the payments in-stability this is a very hard task.

NZBMATRIX has never been the subject of any legal issues or threats.

Also the Usenet Indexing scene is going through some changes, with content being removed from pretty much every provider its making the existence of an indexer irrelevant if the content does not even exists anymore.

So it's time for us to bow out...

I'm sure this is going to happen for all indexers soon enough...

Which brings a great discussion. Newsgroupping in general, is more than likely about to take a heavy hit, seemingly.

Is this how they kill usenet, get rid of all the indexers...?

Many users pay for Usenet access, I wonder how far this will go.

The powers that be certainly seem to be targeting some of the bigger players. i.e. Newzbin and now NZBMatrix.

Just like old torrent sites which were shut down for copyright violations, more will pop up to take their place. I really doubt the movie and recording industries will ever win this battle, but will end up playing a forever game of whack a mole.

Well bootlegging will never 100% go away, but they are making it more difficult & a hassle to obtain said bootlegs.

The problem is that NZB's made Usenet accessible to Joe Public, whereas before you had to be semi functional in the brain department to get stuff from Usenet. Once NZB's took off and more and more people found out about them it was inevitable that Usenet would show up on the entertainment industries radar.

It was far too accessible, it was bound to be shut down.

I would assume everyone else is closing links to account holders only.

Change is coming.

Man that's too bad. On another note, what exactly are the rules to discussing this? Are we allowed to share alternatives or discuss them?

Agreed, this stuff totally blew up in the last few years.

It would be interesting to find out how many people use Usenet versus torrents and cyberlockers. I'm guessing torrents are still the most popular out of all the various forms of file sharing.

To be fair now..if I did download (lol) I'd only be getting TV shows

For films it's WAY too hot out there.

I used..I mean..If I did..ok I'll stop lying..

I used NZB Matrix HEAVILY over the past year. Not suprised to see it go down to be honest. I was pulling 10GB films in about 20 mins.

Now, I just get US tv shows as most of them aren't shown here. So not sure if i want to even use .nzbs anymore.

I never used Usenet before. I remember I use to download anime through irc back in the day haha. Do people still do that?

It was sorta that but most of the DMCA takedown notices are for TV and Movies. In the past few years we've had 2 applications that made the entire process so fucking simple, It made dvr/pvr software and hardware look kinda shitty. That being sickbeard for TV and couchpotato for Movies.

I think sickbeard in particular is mostly mainstream now where joe blow can install it and set it up without any major issues. Plus there's enough guides out there to help you on your way.

I don't see usenet dying at all. It's been around since the beginning of time. The binaries side of things however could become iffy, Which is really what the providers are being requested to take down.

Indexing sites won't go away just like torrent sites haven't vanished. Heck you can set up your own indexing application at home if you have the bandwidth and storage space to do it.

I'm mostly interested to see how usenet evolves. If it actually goes, fuck it we all quit or someone comes along with an updated version.

I still use it from time to time, mainly just to chat though. You still need to have a clue to download stuff, so it's nowhere near as widespread as the other forms of filesharing.

Well I think we can all agree thats it for piracy

I've used NZBSRUS.com since day 1 one of my newsgroups adventures. Got a lifetime VIP membership there for like 6 bucks I think it was way back when?

They recently moved to pay only I believe though.

Fake edit: Oops, it's down right now too. Seems to happen every now and then.

It makes me sad that this is what a lot of the world thinks Usenet is. It had way, way more life before the days that it degraded into just another way to download stuff.

Whatever it used to be its just piracy now

lol. derp...

ALso, I was just comparing USENET to TORRENTING to the muggle. And I do believe that some newsgroupers do look down on torrenters.

Thats a fact!
And private torrenters look down on everyone.

Damn, nzbs.org is down as well. As is sabnzbd.org for some reason.

Nzbs.org seems to be down, too.

HAa76.jpg

(an anti-espionage Soviet propaganda poster. A pot dealing friend of mine had that on his front door so that whoever left, knew what was up, lol. It means "shut up")

works for me

As long as the servers work all should be fine (I think). You don't really need those aggregate sites for usenet to work.

A more civilized form of downloading files...

Sort of like torrenting..
dont you have to pay for the access, like giganews...
I wouldn't say more civilized . . . who wants to extract all those parts . . . just faster depending on the service you have. That's why some people like it, but I wouldn't spend money for Usenet service.

I'm surprised that mysterbin has also gone. It came and then it went. :'(

When I was your age, we carefully saved every part of a multipart Base 64 encoded Usenet message then rejoined them with shell scripts to pirate our copyrighted material.

I am pretty sure grabit auto extract on default setting.
