Picture the crazy results of a popularity contest with the popular vote, that's how you get Kim Kardashian as the POTUS

Yeah, because the EC did a splendid job of preventing a dimwit celebrity from obtaining the highest office in the land. Let's pretend that reality isn't happening on Monday for the sake of defending a flawed system.

I was reading this thread while at work (while it was still unfolding). And holy shit. If we're serious about this referendum on fake news, I think random twitter garbage should fall into that category.

People should just stop using Twitter, period. It's a terrible piece of shit media platform that offers almost nothing of value and actively discourages any nuance in discussion (if you can even call what goes on there discussion). Most people don't even use it, just journalists and an annoying as shit vocal minority/trolls. It's a cancer on our public discourse.

I said the same thing back during the primary when people were obsessing over Twitter and using random Twitter/social media posts to generalize entire voting blocs (e.g. the BernieBro meme). I think the obsession over what's happening on Twitter and other social media also played a big role in the shock of Trump's victory and the bubble effect people have been taking about.

One on hand, direct democracy is what led to Brexit happening in the UK.

On the other hand, the EC failed its one purpose, to stop a potential tyrant from taking power.

Ugh. Talk about a rock and a hard place.

That's not even what the EC is for. It's to keep the power distributed away from the most populated states.

Protecting Slave Power, Rutherford Hayes, George W and now Trump. The EC doesn't exactly have an impressive record when it comes to protecting the nation and its people.

We need a charismatic asshole to run next time

Like Bill Maher said, we should put up Anthony Weiner

The same dude who's been plagued by scandals for years? The same dude who tried to fuck a 16 year old when he was married? Yeah I'm sure that'll go over just great.

Well, considering we have a President that's accused of sexual assault, fraud, and colluding with a foreign entity...unfortunately the state of politics are I can't completely write it off, lol

what would the republicans do if the roles were switched?
Have a peaceful transition of government while bitching with impotent rage? Like they've always done when.
Edit: we don't know what the reps would exactly do in this situation. Since when do to wrongs make a right?

We don't know what they'd do, because it's never affected that party.

Dems have won the popular vote in the last four of five elections, and won the presidency twice in the last five elections.

If a Rep gets the pop vote, they get the EC. Doesn't seem to work that way for Dems.

We can't know what they'd do under the same situation... but given what they've done when losing both? It'd be a crazy person clusterfuck.

It's kind of luck, really, that Dems are the ones to have gotten screwed both times. Much of why 538 had Obama as such a high chance to win in 538, despite a <1% poll in the lead, was the EC was heavily in his favor. Even if the poll error was substantially against him, he would likely win on electoral math.

It's too subtle to be systematically for or against one party.

I think Democratic voters are better than that. I don't want to be proven wrong.

Bill Clinton, if he were run today instead of 24 years ago, would have been completely tanked by the sexual allegations.

Good luck trying to out-asshole Donald Trump and company.

Liberals need to learn the meaning of righteous conviction and stop confusing it with amoral pricks.

The standards aren't the same on both sides. For dems you need a hope and change type of charisma to stir up the base. Mind you, it doesn't matter what the policy positions of said hope and change type is, it just matters that they can give a good speech.

Pubs would vote for a literal monkey in a suit if it had an R next to its name.

I'd actually say dem voters are just as bad in a different way. And, nah, Bill would've been fine in this election simply because he's a good speaker.

It's actually better than that. Every single time it's been against the Democrats. Every!

President Cleveland won the popular vote 48.6% to 47.8% but lost the EV 233-168 (20 states to 18) to Benjamin Harrison in 1888. (2.2% for Prohibition Party, 1.3% for Union Labor Party)

In 1876, Samuel J. Tilden won the popular vote 50.9% to 47.9% over Rutherford B. Hayes but lost the electoral vote when the Electoral Commission awarded all 20 disputed electoral votes to Hayes in exchange for the GOP meeting certain Democratic demands.

This has got to be a joke.

it's a joke, but the sad part is that if the last election is anything to go by, no one would really care about the sex stuff. no one cares.

but we need an ahole who will speak plainly and say fuck you to anyone who deserves it

I suggest watching White House press conferences this week, & Trump's Twitter response. Smooth transition isn't happening.

It seems that this entire week has been leading up to this. CIA leaks, WH getting more vocal, Trump not acknowledging Russian interference.

From what I am hearing, @POTUS has determined that orderly transition cannot be accomplished and is no longer priority due to Trump/Russia.

Could be something here.

Did I miss something or was this just a load of BS

Look at the hazing hillary just got for bill getting his dick sucked 20 years ago. It matters deeply if it's a democrat. The republican base is the one that wields the lions share of outrage over sex, so they are free to forgive it when it suits them. Plus, right wing media noise machine one-sided affect on discourse.

As a resident of NC worried about what the GOP is doing to our election system on their way out, I have to say I admire Obama even more for trying to make it a smooth transition. I don't want it to be smooth. I want Obama to make it impossible for Trump to do anything. I want him to go so far as to loosen the chair legs in the oval office so Trump literally falls on his ass on his first day.

But we can't let ourselves sink so low. We can't be the monsters the NC GOP aspires to, no matter how tempting.

Of course we can sink that low. Morals mean jack shit when people are having their rights taken away.

Obama should put a thumbpin in Trump's shoe.
