Official Apple WWDC 2006 keynote thread

You must live a very boring life.

TheWolf said:
kind of.

i just don't get why they haven't switched over to the new mobile chips.

Maybe supply problems. They're pin-compatible, so I'm sure it won't be long once supply picks up.

Well, I can't access the store.

I know there are millions of mac losers right now trying to build the 5 million configurations and send them to MacRumors.

GET OFF SO I CAN SPEND MONEY

Because the chips have been out a few weeks? The other major manufacturers aren't really shipping anything with those chips yet either.

Just got out of the keynote and I'm sitting at a local pub here, but if you have any questions, the keynote isn't covered by the developer's oath to secrecy so I can answer any Qs though I can't promise I won't be online long nor that I'll be faster than the Apple fan sites. Leopard put on quite a show!
Yeah, I have a question. What's up with your girlfriend's face? I mean, her rack is outstanding, but there's just something about her which I don't like.

</sarcasm>

All kidding aside, what was the thing that impressed you the most? What is the general buzz on the show floor like?

One of my dissapointments is a lack of any kind of frontrow update. Its been essentially untouched since release, which is sad. It can be a competitor to Media Center if they would just make it more robust. ie, why the hell cant I browse my photos through frontrow as thumbnails? Why is the only option a preset slideshow? Basic functionality like that is sorely needed. And with the visual capabilities of os x, its a waste its not better exploited.

IIRC, an update to Front Row was mentioned today.

I'm going to wait until September, and then I'm picking up a Mac Pro. I'm thinking

3.0 Ghz
4 gigs of RAM
quad SLIed videocards.
250 gig HD (I have enough storage on my current home network)

Didn't you get the memo? I'm dating Phranky apparently (no disrespect to Phranky of course).

The general buzz just seemed general awe at all things Leopard, with Mail, Spaces, and the "complete package" bringing up the rear. People were ecstatic about the new Mac Pros, specifically the 64-bit top-to-bottom abilities, the 4 HDDs, the graphics card options, & the quad cores across the line. Time Machine blew everyone away, just on the sheer absurdity of the eye candy, and people were immensely impressed with WebClip. Leopard is shaping up wonderfully from the general consensus, although I don't think I was the only one half-expecting #10 to be the Finder...but that's likely to be addressed later when they get more real work on it done I assume.

nothing new in the WWDC '06, just clonning from Windows and Linux, Time Machine = Backup and System Restore from Windows XP , Spaces = Virtual Desktops in GNOME, KDE and other Linux DEs, and i really liked their support for the 64-bit processors, but its not the time for it i guess =), anyway it would be nice if they supported virtualization since most of the OSs out there will be supporting it.

You could go with 1 videocard only and then put 4 whatever DX10 cards in there when they are available. 3.0Ghz is expensive, but it's the only thing you won't be able to upgrade afterwards, so I think it's a good choice. I'm wondering how much faster it is than 2.66Ghz, hope we get some benchmarks soon...

Why is their store limited to 7300s? They like, aren't even as good as 6800s. Would I be able to put 4 7800s in the Mac Pro once I got it home?

Partially why I'm waiting until September.

Btw the displays got better and cheaper:

20" ACD
Brightness: 250 cd/m2 -> 300 cd/m2
Contrast Ratio: 400:1 -> 700:1

23" ACD
Brightness: 270 cd/m2 -> 400 cd/m2
Contrast Ratio: 400:1 -> 700:1

I bought mine. It took about two hours to process because of the slowness of the site.

So excited. This will be my 7th mac.

TheWolf said:
did they even mention Bootcamp in the keynote?

Yes, but I think they just said it was part of Leopard. The inclusion of BootCamp means that Apple likely won't enter the virtualization field.

So no iPod update?

No. As has been several times in this thread, this was the World Wide Developers Conference. It would have virtually nothing to do with Apples consumer products at all. Look for iPod updates in a month or so, and at their own event.

Hey, it will be my 7th as well. :D

I will get mine soon. This is most likely the config:

* 2.66 GHz Quad Xeon (The 3GHz version is too expensive for me right now)
* 2GB 667 DDR2 FB DIMM ECC - 4x512MB (or maybe 4GB if I can get the RAM cheap enough somewhere else)
* 2xNVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT 256MB SDRAM (one for the 30" screen and the second for the two 17" screens I still have ... one left, one right of the 30")
* 250GB Serial ATA 3Gb/s drive @ 7200 rpm (I have enough external space)
* 16x SuperDrive DL (DVD+R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
* Bluetooth 2.0+EDR module (for my headset)
* Apple Cinema HD Display (30") (finaly is all I can say)

Damn, can't wait! :)

Fredi

My 12" Powerbook is now two years old and my dual 1.8GHz G5 three years, so this will be a pretty big performance update for me. :)

Whenever CS3 hits.

I'm so turned on by the new Mac Pros. I can't even begin to imagine how awesome Logic Pro(my wife's app) and Aperture(my app) is going to run on them.

Disappointed that the new Xserves won't be ready until October as I have an immediate need for a few right now and really don't want to buy G5 ones when the new Intel ones are SO MUCH better, dual power supplies finally!!!!

What a cock tease by Apple to saying they are keeping Leopards coolest features on the down low.

The level of idiocy in this thread is amazing.

As for me, the features shown were nice... Time Machine looks awesome, but doesn't seem to fix the need for a good means of backing up to writable media; the new iChat stuff looks fun, but I would have liked to have seen an announcement about support for other services and a non-videochat way to share stuff; and WebClip is cool, and the official virtual desktops support is as well.

Of course, OSX previews at keynotes are typically more about the fluff stuff, and I care more about the under the hood stuff. Everybody at this point expects a new Finder to be one of those "top secret" features, and it had better be. Full metadata tag support across the board, better in-Finder previewing, stuff like that I want to see. The updates to Mail.app are okay, I guess, but the app desperately needs some under the hood fixes... Smart Addresses that work, support going with that for old non-active mail accounts that won't get in the way of auto complete when fitting out the "To" field, message threading worth a damn, etc. (One of my mail subject of attention for my entries to the "Fake Leopard screenshot" contest that I won recently.

Spring is a long time... ack. I really want to know now about more of the under the hood stuff. I'd also like to make the jump soon to an Intel-based Mac, and have 10.5 waiting for me.

Not even close. You would have been more correct if you said they cloned the file system from enterprise SMC that allows you to retrieve a file from 30 years ago, but at the moment there is absolutely nothing in the consumer space that delivers that functionality.

Aren't shadow copies / "previous versions" from Windows something like this?

Shadow copies are hard copies of shared folders at regular intervals. Shadow Copies is equivalent to what you get with Backup and Automator or rsync.

Come on =P don't tell me you haven't used System Restore or Backup in Windows XP ?
or Shadow Volume Copy in Windows Server 2003?

Your entries were ****ing awesome. Congrats, you have some major talent.

Not at all. A shadow copy is a block differential image of the entire volume, which is kept in a special file on the volume.

They are not full copies of files or folders, and are not the same as rsync or Backup + Automator.

In Windows Server 2003/XP, they were exposed via SMB over the network. You could right click a file stored on a server, and it would show you the previous versions available in older shadow copies on that server.

In Vista, the "Previous Versions" feature uses Shadow Copies to let you get access to older versions of any file on your hard disk. In a similar fashion, you can right click any file on the hard disk, and Vista will show you the versions available on prior shadow copies. It will also search an index for any off-line backup versions of that file (made with the Vista backup app) and show those as well.

The stock dropped two percent, the investors are disappointed. I guess they are smart enough to see the giant gaping hole between iMac and Pro...the hole that needs to be filled with a competitively-priced Conroe mid-tower...the hole whose filling would spur substantial marketshare growth.

After the success of the non-Pro MacBook, I thought they had started to 'get it'. They will, in time.

The iChat stuff sounds nice, but until it supports MSN, I ain't touchin' it.

Yeah.

I thought they might announce that, it's easier for Microsoft to just let them make it compatible than keep developing the hopelessly out of date Mac MSN.

I'm thinking of this config:

Two 2.66GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon
2GB (4 x 512MB)
500GB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s
2 x NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT 256MB
2 x SuperDrives
Both Bluetooth 2.0+EDR and AirPort Extreme
Apple Keyboard and Mighty Mouse - U.S. English
Mac OS X - U.S. English

$3500 is really my limit.

Just give us the Mail.app that worked fine all the way from NeXTSTEP up to Panther, idiots. HTML templates sound absolutely retarded. I guess I'll be using GNUMail.app for a while yet.

So even though I hate computers, I really want to get a Macbook and have my boyfriend get a Macbook Pro so we can cyber properly. This is gonna be awesome.

Please tell me you're kidding. I realize that's one amazing machine, but $12,000 for a computer? NEVER.
