Official Armored Core 4 thread of MECHA GOODNESS

Just sayin'

You're better off asking for ZOE 3 instead of Konami developing the next Armored Core, because it seems to me you'd rather play that than AC.
I mentioned Konami, not even thinking about ZOE. I chose a Japanese developer I believe could do a good job with the IP.

A more interesting fiction would be something I could see another company going farther with than From has. The plot, acting, environments, and missions are extremely lackluster with the AC series. It has all remained essentially the same, and rather vanilla, for ten years.

I won't make my own suggestions, but I stand that there is a ton of room for improvement that From isn't jumping on. The base gameplay concept is terrific, and what made a long-time fan out of me. You're the engineer and the pilot of a very powerful, anime-inspired mech. Now make a truly AAA game with it.

I think if anything a good Armored Core game would require input from a number of developers handling different aspects of the game. However rather than bother a group of developers to work on one game I find it sufficient to leave it in From's hands. Course their lack of vision is the main reason why the series has seen little evolution through the countless sequels/expansions.

I think what From really needs is competition. They pretty much have the giant mech-genre covered between AC and now Chromehounds. The only way there is ever going to be some evolution is if a challenger exists.

If these are the sort of things you think take the game farther than it is then I honestly can't agree. I won't argue that the missions are poor but I don't really think they're the focus of the game. They're simply there for training and to provide parts to customize your AC. I think in due time the focus will shift even further from anything story-related and the games will be all about dueling and other multiplayer-based modes.

The first point is essentially mine also. The second I agree with, but the fact is that they have had competition in this genre, just not from one of the high-profile Japanese studios.

That just isn't what I want from Armored Core. For me the stock taken in the single- and multi-player modes is about equal. I like a powerful single-player experience that doesn't have the premise of competition. But sometimes I like to prove my AC is better than yours (and of course the AI is awful). :P

I'm really liking the control scheme of the new game. It feels way more fluid than the previous iterations and the quick boost is a godsend.

As for the graphics being identical, I don't buy it.

indeed - it looks like it uses the chromehounds engine which the X360 handled easily, where as the ps3 struggled with it - so yeah, i think you are spot on, i don't buy it that they'll look the same.

Art-wise, AC4 looks a lot better than Chromehounds, that's pretty obvious from screenshots to actual gameplay videos. There's some slowdown that I've experienced in the demo when there are ass-load explosions but besides that, it runs really smooth. Too bad there's no multi in the demo, although the first 3 missions are nice to mess with.

I just played the demo for about 20 minutes and enjoyed it.

The graphics are great and it runs extremely smooth. I haven't played Armored Core since the first one on the PS so I am having trouble adjusting to the speed of this one.

My only complaint is that there doesn't seem to be very much "punch" when you destroy and enemy. The enemy just kind of dies, but it isn't very satisfying at all. The sound effects seem kind of weak too for a kick-ass mech game.

Everything is just so fast I don't really know what I should be doing. I can't beat the two stages after the first one and I keep getting destroyed really quickly. I must not be using the quick boost right or something.

I definitely plan on picking this game up as soon as it comes out, though.

will try it out later i guess
Yes! While I've only played the demo of AC4, I think it looks 1000x better than Chromehounds (which was incredibly ugly from what I've seen).

CH had nicely detailed mechs (so does AC4), but environments right out of a 1998 PC game. Bleh.

you really have to play chromehounds to appreciate its visuals. most of the environments are barren, but some of them are beautifully lit. and the effects for smoke, explosions, tracer-fire, dust, and so on are first-rate -- just watching a battle in the distance is awesome. and when you're actually in the thick of it, with your cameras glitching out as you take damage, it's as intense as games come.

And if m0dus didn't just convince you, we have a semi-active squad going now for Chromehounds....

PM me if you want in to it....

The achievement list is up for those that care.

A good portion of the achievements are based off of completing certain data packs, does anyone who played the JP version know what they are and how you complete them?

Granted the backgrounds won't totally blow your mind, but INCREDIBLY UGLY?!

for me, still one of the best looking next gen games to date.

Chromehounds has great effects, but bad art for the environments and the mechs themselves.

Armored Core has the best of both.

I really don't understand how dark can constantly criticise CH so much, while openly accepting things like Sonic "next-gen" and Full Auto. Boggles the mind.

Havent played it in a few weeks. I should really get back into it.

How can a mech, that the player has full control over building, have bad art?

CH's environments vary. The Capital Cities are much better looking than the deserts (obviously) that everyone likes to critique. Everything else falls in between. Snowy landscapes, wooded areas, mining settlements, damns/bridges etc.

indeed - there are low points in CHs graphics, but the highs are HIGH!

and all this in the first 6 months of the X360's life too.

Might do some compare and contrast shots of CH / AC4 / AC4 ps3.

Just because you can build your own mech doesn't say anything of the art style. The parts are designed by someone who isn't you. You have a vast garage mode in Armored Core as well, but I wouldn't call the mech art in those two games similar at all.

While I really like Chromehounds' online mode, I was frustrated that the art reminds me of this:

Like I said, I've only played the demo. Those shots are very nice (though I still prefer the appearance of AC4).

The two missions in the demo WERE extremely ugly.

So I kind of wrote off Armored Core 4 after playing a couple chapters on PS3. The controls didn't jive with me and some of the missions were just ridiculously hard and I was actually losing more money than making money on missions, etc. Overall, your typical shitty AC experience.

Well, I bought it for 360 today on a whim and gave it another go, this time with a much easier to use starting mech... and I'm having fun, sort of. Graphically, both versions are identical, that is, they are both graphically stylistic but also shitty and sparse.

Gonna keep playing it... I'm also on the last couple missions of Ace Combat 6... I should finish that soon too.

Anyone want to play either game on 360 with me? :P

I was one of the few that actually enjoyed AC4. Even S ranked normal and hard missions. The only problem is that the multiplayer got old fast since it's very sparse in comparison to CH. I haven't played online in a while though, so I'm not sure what has changed. Before, there were some really overpowered combos that made the game a bit boring. Send me a msg if you want to play-I also have AC6 but I need to finish Mass Effect before I get into that one.

When you say the multiplayer is "boring" ... what does that mean? Isn't it basically a faster paced arena-style CH?

Meaning matches lasted like a minute and then you're back out in the lobby. I preferred the one on one battles though. Like I said, it's been a while since I've played online--I'm sure some of the weapons were nerfed to make matches last a bit longer.
