Official Halo 2 Thread

So what are the Halo books about? I dont really have time to read them but im interested anyways since Halo 2 really got me into the story. Do they have a synopsis or something somewhere, like cliffnotes or whatever you wanna call them. Do they even matter to the first game and Halo 2 or are they side things that have no connection?
They're pretty much side things that have no connection. They flesh out some details, like the attack on Reach before the first Halo, the history of Captain Keye's pipe (seriously), the SPARTAN program, how we can understand the Covenant now...but that's about it.

No way I will wait for Halo 3 on the xenon, the reason halo 2 is so great is bungie took the time to make it a real squeal.

Unlike these other new franchises that have three similar games out in a single generation!

I just finished the game. I read it was bad but not as bad as this.

As for Cortana, it sounds like Brood War all over again with a lady leading the alien species.

I hate how this game manages to mix both MGS2's ambiguous story with Starcraft's lead lady taking over (If the Cortana betrayal is of any truth.)

It's worth 60$ but I'm hoping that Half-Life 2 will do better.

I really don't see how people can say arbiter is cooler. Chief is so much more of a badass. Arbiter is a little pussy that got humiliated in front of a ton of covenant. Meanwhile Master Chief continues to bring the pain train to pussies and rides a bomb in motherfucking outer space. He also has cooler moments like "I won't", "Boo!". Also, when Johnson bangs on his little pod before they arrive on the new Halo and Master Chief bangs on it back; AWESOME.

I've got a 16k word summary of all three books I saved in a Word doc from a web article. I've read them all, but if you want a summary of the backstory, it's a really damn good one. Let me know how to get it to you.

The ending was a little disapointing, but it is what it is.. people were pissed that Han Solo got left in stasis at the end of Empire Strikes Back.. its just a cliffhanger.

ending spoiler:
i don't think that's quite it...it's more as if the empire strikes back suddenly ended just as luke was about to fight darth vader. doesn't help that the last segment of the last cutscene is so similar to the cutscenes that introduce stages. the final stage it leads you to expect just isn't there. on further reflection, i'm not sure it's a bad ending, but it is extremely jarring even by cliffhanger standards. it doesn't even have the sort of partially satisfying semi-resolution that we generally expect from open-ended stories or serialized stories. it just cuts out. as cool as that last shot is, maybe they should have ended it just before master chief boarded the ship.

I'm stuck near the end (I think) can anyone help me?

Ok, my current objective is "Stop the prophet of truth from boarding his phantom" but I'm still way before that I think. I'm in this area with 2 slopes and a turret in the middle. I come from one slope take the turret take out the guys. Checkpoint. The when I start heading up the opposite slopes a shitload of guys in white rush out including 2 of the huge blue guys. If I'm lucky I can avoid them while they shoot at bugs and rush in the door.

Here is the arrgghh part. The holo-girl says "Let's see how things go" and I run and hide. A bunch of big blue guys and tons of white elites rush in and the music starts playing. They fight the brutes and the end result is a room with like FOUR BIG BLUE GUYS and 8-10 SUPER SUPER shielded white elites with swords and all kinds of other weapons to kill me in 1 hit. Shit I shoot 4 brute canon shots into one of the white guys and THEY'RE STILL ALIVE >_< All the doors in the room except the one I came from are locked. How the fuck do I get through this?

I've been trying this one checkpoint for 2 hours now ;_; The rest of the game was manageable but the numbers of enemies and their strength is just insane here.

thanks,

Plasma Sword is your friend.

i think i had a fuel rod gun when i did that part. took out both hunters and a couple elites that way. you're probably going to need either rockets/fuel rods or a sniper/beam rifle. try backtracking, or if it comes to that, restarting the level. what difficulty are you playing on, incidentally?

Bebpo said:
Does it work on the big blue guys? Cause I rush up and hit them 2-3 times and they just punch me once and I die >_<

You hit them twice and they go down.

The best approach to take with them is to use either the carbine from afar (pseudo-sniping them) or the brute shot from a close range.

Ummm I haven't seen a rocket or fuel rod yet the level so far :\ Don't really want to restart the level since it took me about 1-2 hours to get this far in the level. I die like 5-50 times on each room here ;_;l

I'm playing on normal which I thought was supposed to be easy :(

what's sad about this is I'm dying 80% of the time in the first 20 secs after the check point when the first rush of white armor guys come out. Just a little wimpy guy's 2-3 shots gets me to no health and then any random hit kills me. Oh and the bug guys come from behind me while I'm firing on the guys in front.

i definitely had a fuel rod gun at some point in that level. i think it was just on the ground somewhere. beam rifle would probably be your best bet, and i'm sure you could find one -- it can take out the hunters with one shot, and the elites with three or four shots to the chest. plasma sword would certainly be good against the elites, but i've never tried it against hunters.

i honestly don't remember being stuck on that level at all. :/ i'm about to get there on heroic. i'll post if i come up with a good strategy.

Ok I grab the plasma sword and run around with full armor and leap and hit one of the white sword elites. His armor flashes and he hits me back...I die in 1 hit.

Close range sword is definitely not working here.

when dealing with enemies who can absorb a hit from the plasma sword, you should attack once, quickly move backwards, and then attack again. if you try to get two hits in a row, you'll probably get smacked.

found a fuel rod gun off the body of one of the little guys who runs out but used most of the ammo on the 2 on the uphill ramp. Between that and the plasma rifle I was able to get them all dead. Now comes the room of death ;_;

Well my main problem here is that if it's a sword guy and they see me jump at them, they slice back killing me in 1 hit before I can actually control the character and move back.

*edit* ok phew passed it. Killing all the guys outside got me a checkpoint which was nice. Then I went with the plasma sword advice and just mashed when near the sword guys and tried to get 2-3 hits in so they would die before hitting me back. Luckily it worked. At the end there were 2 monkey guys left and I just used the sword at that point. Yay...

Yes snipe away, try to take out the elite with the fuel rod gun, then move around the upper right hand side of the room using the Plasma Sword to take out elites.

Pick up the fuel rod gun, take cover and snipe away!

I cheated a bit and had the big blue guys follow me out and killed them off one by one.

Finished the game tonight, I can't believe they call that a fucking ending. :lol

Not only that
Bungie leaves you with TWO cliffhangers, master cheif going to save earth AND Cortana giving information to the big tentacle thing (I honestly have no idea what that is). I'm VERY dissapointed they did this, since they are in a position where they could leave the fans hanging and they don't have to worry about sales of the next halo or anything. I wish i would've got to at least save Earth with Master Cheif :/

Yeah, but....

The Arbiter does all that cool stuff despite being disgraced and humiliated. He presses on and follows his heart no matter what -- totally devoted to the Covenant when he thinks they're right, totally devoted to the rebellion when he thinks the Prophets are wrong. Master Chief is always very aloof and detached....he is literally a faceless receptacle for one-liners and thoughtless foolhardy heroism. You never get a sense of his emotion or his devotion. The Arbiter is simply a more fleshed-out character......with a much better voice actor and a more involving story arc ;)

woohoo finished it.

I was surprised the final boss fight was so easy considering the game has some nasty difficult parts.

Good ending too.

Master Chief is such a really crappy character compared to the Arbiter. He was made by other people where as the Arbiter made himself what he is. The Arbiter was humiliated and almost killed but then came back to kick ass and help save the universe. He is such a more bad ass character.

Anyone else think Bungie added the Scarab after seeing the HL² Strider demo? Same concept, and especially the way it charges and shoots is strikingly similar. And of course New Mombasa was revamped after E³ 2003 (when the Strider demo was first shown). I bet they did :P

On the LE DVD, it shows that Bungie went back and redesigned the entire game after E3 2003 because "it wasn't fun."

Best marine quote in the entire game by far....."Hey your the perfect size.......to kiss my ass!!" Said by the latino marine to a bunch of grunts. That freakin line had me rolling, I find myself keeping the marines alive purely for comic relief. They're great.

I ran into a great one after leaving two marines in the warthog for a while to explore on foot. I had just landed on
Delta Halo
and wanted to look around at the gorgous scenery. I got back to the 'hog and my gunner says, "Hope you had fun doin' what ever the hell you were doin'."

Right after that is a great scripted exchange:

Marine: "Dear Sarge, shootin' aliens in outer space. Wish you were here."
Sarge (over the comm channel): "I heard that, jackass."

lmao!

Yes, but that doesn't explain why a human ship, whose interior resembles very much the one we previously destroyed on a different halo, is there.

It's actually a Sentinel Construction Facility. If you look closely at the Library at the beginning of the level, you can see the Facility under fire and crash landing towards to the surface.

Yeah, I watched the LE disk yesterday and it sounds like the rewrote large portions of the story too. They said the game was nine levels long and
ended on earth in a "big climax". I bet they stretched the story out into 3 games.

thanks,

If your at the part where I think you are then you don't need to kill anybody. It might sound cheap but if you can sneak around them and run through the door into the next room you'll be set.

EDIT: Just noticed that you already got past that part. Sorry for being too late!

I also have a question.. is the covenant homeworld that gigantic 'ship'? Or is that just some gigantic ship? It would be cool if their homeworld had been blown to hell, and they now could transport it around like a space ship

My guess would be that each one of the different creatures in the covenant have their own homeworld. If you watch the LE disk, they tell you how the different creatures in the covenant were at war until the prophets found the first halo and founded an era of peace (within the covenant).

Is it just me or are the Latino Marines tougher than all the rest of 'em? Maybe it's just a coincidence but anytime I ever had a Latino Marine with me, they ALWAYS stayed alive the longest and also seemed to fight using better strategies and tactics.

Well, I once had a woman Marine who stayed alive the longest, but when that happened there were no Latino Marines in that group. I have to admitt, she was a pretty good fighter who was able to stay with me for quite a long time, and much MUCH longer than her fellow Marines who had passed away very early.

But anytime I ever had a Latino Marine I got pretty happy because I knew he would be able to bring it right along with me.

Why did Bungie make Master Chief jump higher in Halo 2 but not including running? You see Master Chief run in the cutscenes. Makes no sense.

Okay I just beat the game and I have questions..

a note i missed a lot of the story because it was loud in the dorms and the guy i was playing with kept skipping through the cutscenes...

Why were the brutes and the elites fighting at the conventant planet? and why were the brutes working for the prophets?

Why was the destruction of halo the arbiter's fault?

What was that tentacle thingy?

How did Johnson escape?

I plan on going through the game SOLO after i beat HL2..

The level design of Halo 2 makes much better use of vertical space. Most battles involve snipers and climbing, tall structures. In Halo, most battles, with few exceptions, were in flat ground with obsticles. They modfied the MC to navigate the vertical space better: Higher jumps, no falling damage. It makes for more dynamic battles as you are moving through structures seeking tactical advantage.

I read that Bungie pulled sprinting because it didn't make the game flow the way they wanted.

Why were the brutes and the elites fighting at the conventant planet? and why were the brutes working for the prophets?

Answer:
Political power grab. The Brutes joined the covenant and were winning the favor of the Prophets. When they had enough power, they turned on the Elites (whom they hate). The Elites in turn rose up against the Brutes because of their falling in the hierarchy of the Covenant.

Why was the destruction of halo the arbiter's fault?

Answer:
He was the commander of the fleet that was at Halo when the MC destroyed it. When the Flood was released, he stopped pursuing the Master Chief (the Demon) and turned to fighting the Flood. Because of this he didn't know what the MC was up to, and the destruction of Halo resulted.

What was that tentacle thingy?

Answer
I have no idea - I'm 2 levels from beating it, someone else will have to help out.

How did Johnson escape?

Answer
From Halo? in First Strike they describe it. He has a rare disease as a result of overexposure to plasma (from the grenades). It's related to cancer, but the side effect is that he is immune to the Flood infection forms. He took off on a Longsword figher right before Halo blew.

Coop said:

Because the Elites failed to protect the Prophet of Regret from the Master Chief, the Brutes were made the protectors of the Prophets. Before, this responsibility was the Elites entirely.

Why was the destruction of halo the arbiter's fault?
It really wasn't. Arbiter was busy trying to make sure the Flood didn't get off the ring, and by the time he was aware of the Master Chief's intentions, it was much too late.

They just wanted to see him suffer because he "let" it happen.

What was that tentacle thingy?
"Gravemind", I believe it's called. It's part of the Flood, apparently...

How did Johnson escape?
In the book Halo: First Strike, they explain that Johnson had a disease caused from extended exposure to the Covenant's Plasma Grenades(radiation or something) that messed up his nerves. Because of this, the Flood could not use his body, and left him be. Before Halo was destroyed, Johnson fled on an escape pod, if I remember correctly. Where the Master Chief eventually scooped up soon after the destruction of Halo. Johnson accompanies the Master Chief for the rest of their jouney back to Earth.

I plan on going through the game SOLO after i beat HL2..[/QUOTE]

Mine stuck with me when i was attempting to find the prophet of truth. He met his unfortunate end when he fell off a cliff, to be met by a brute royal guard with an energy sword.

Why were the brutes and the elites fighting at the conventant planet? and why were the brutes working for the prophets?
Multiple reasons:
1) The Elites and Brutes have hated each other ever since the Brutes were brought into the Covenant (there's a conversation between a pair of Grunts that mentions the tensions between them, in the Conversations from the Universe booklet thingy (not sure if that's included in the normal edition, i only got the LE)).
2) The Brutes (and Tartarus in particular), are vicious, scheming, power-hungry bastards who are jealous of the Elites' position within the Covenant.
3) The Prophets blamed the Elites for their failure to protect Regret, not to mention the destruction of the Halo in the first game, and so replaced the Elite honour guard with Brutes.
4) The Arbiter learned of the true purpose of the Halos from the Gravemind (i think, or it might have been one of the Monitors), and the Elites didn't appreciate the fact that the Prophets had been lying to them all along about the Great Journey, while the Brutes remained loyal to the Prophets.

As for exactly why the Brutes remained loyal, they presumably still had faith in the Prophets and their Great Journey(they're a new member of the Covenant, so maybe it's the natural zeal of the newly converted), and by usurping the Elites from their position as the most favoured species within the Covenant, believed they would have greater rewards at the end of the Great Journey.

Why was the destruction of halo the arbiter's fault?
He was the general in charge of the fleet that followed the POA to Halo.

What was that tentacle thingy?
It's called the Gravemind. It's never made entirely clear exactly what it is, but it's clearly Flood of some description (it had integrated the Prophet of Regret and the Monitor of the second Halo). Most reasonable speculation is that it's some kind of über-Flood thing, possibly the central consciousness of the Flood (whether that's for all the Flood across the galaxy, or just the local 'swarm', we don't know). Could be that it's the ultimate evolution of the blob that had absorbed Capt. Keyes in the first game.

How did Johnson escape?
He didn't taste right. It's only barely mentioned in the game, but according to First Strike, he had some weird disease brought on by radiation exposure that fucked up his biochemistry enough to make the Flood not recognize him as a potential food source. And somehow, the Flood spores that remained in his bloodstream gave him a Wolverine-style regeneration ability, or something. Oh, and he hitched a ride back to Earth with the Chief (again, it's all detailed in First Strike).

Two interesting findings from Halo 2 - dunno if they've been mentioned yet, couldn't bother to go through the mile-long thread:

1 - Reggie was here! - a quote from the game in the mission of reaching the
temple
: "I was so busy kicking ass, I forgot to take names"

2 - Flashlight runs on framerate - turning it on in some areas makes the framerate to stumble

regarding brutes/elites/prophets/etc

One thing that's interesting... is that the covenant was formed by 2 warring parties (Elites/Prophets) and then they bullied the grunts, jackals, hunters and drones to become part of it. Brutes were the only race which didn't require an asskicking to get them to join. Damn new kids on the block. Maybe that's what the covenant are trying to do, get the humans to join by forcing their religion onto them?
