Official Halo 2 Thread

As for Halo 1 PC, I'm surprised you can even play the game online with the atrocious netcode Gearbox supplied with the game.

34 ping on every server I play on :D But, if it EVER does go up it always caps @ 66 ping

Halo 2's ending sucked 25 different flavors of ass. Halo 2 definitely was a disappointment. A step down from the original.

halo 2 ending sucks = Game is CRAP

why?

because

ENDING = GAME

i love the logic

Christ, this is why I don't post on this board. You turn everything on its head to turn it into a bitch fest. To explain why I think the game was a disappointment would be to reveal spoilers. So do us all a favor and stop trying to be superior.

I just beat it. I liked the game, but it seemed to go by faster than the original. I think that's mainly due to the fact that I've pretty much played this game since I've purchased it at every available moment, whereas I got Halo well after Xbox launch and took my time with it. I think someone said it was akin to the cliffhangers in old serials and whatnot, and that's certainly true. It really didn't bother me. I think there is resolution to this story, somwhat, but the larger conflict continues.

I wonder if people are angry at the ending because they think it sucks or because they have to wait another three years or so for Halo 3?

I'm no Halo fanboy. I think Halo 1 was a great game but its story was more coherent and I felt satisfied when I finished it. I received no satisfaction from Halo 2, like all my work was for nothing. Its like reading a good book and then 30 chapters of plot and character development are wrapped up in 2 pages.

Also, fixed2bebroken, I never in my post said the game was crap.

yes, cause its not about the gameplay these days, its about the Cumshot climax of the story.

they should have made a better story, if they would have did that, they could have just put no enemies in the game and let me just walk thru each stage just so i could progress the great story. cause who cares about....you know....the gameplay.

teh hamburglar, and i never said u said the game was crap, i was exagerrating what you were saying.

The viewport seems a little more straight-on in H2, losing a little of what I imagined to be a slight fish-eye effect seen in H1...makes for some adjusting to the slightly more confined view...

Oh, good, you noticed that too. I'm not going crazy afterall.
It bothers me a lot in split screen : (

[spoiler tags are your friend]

Sorry but you cant post "halo 2 is a step down from the original" with no qualification and expect everyone (especially in a Halo 2 launch topic) to just go "oh, ok".

Watch me get first place in a rocket launcher only match near the end, I am probably the best player on this board... maybe...

After watchin that vid I wouldn't even say you're in the top 20 here :P

Rockets take the least skill of any weapon aside from the sword,so you can't really gauge a skill level using rockets. You were getting pwned in the non rockets game ;)

anyone playing this game on legendary?

i just got to the arbiter level. hard-ass game.

honestly i thought halo 1's story was crap.

why? cause it wasnt interesting enough to make me pay attention to it. And wtf...that ending was a boring lame ending....

legendary ending was funny but not worth the effort just for the ending itself.

what kept me playing halo 1 was the gameplay.

i havent beaten halo 2 yet so i cant comment on the ending, but honestly, right now, i somewhat forgot what the story was about cause honestly, i really dont care....this isnt an rpg.

peace

I can't even beat the first fucking level for chrissakes. I'm stuck on this checkpoint for OVER TWO HOURS. Wario am crying

At this rate, this game will take me 60 hours to complete on Legendary

Okay, last post in this miserable thread.

Halo 2 was a well made game but several things make it lesser than the original. The first being the focus on Covenant/Arbiter and less on Humans/Master Chief. The second being related to the first in that the story was incomplete. The gameplay was exactly the same as the first but limited for it being a sequel.

We went to a game about humans fight against the Covenant to a story about the Covenant trying to activate Halo with Master Chief making a guest appearance. Oh wait, its the last chapter and Master Chief has arrived back at Earth...THE END. wtf? The "boss" was extremely weak. Throw a grenade and all the brute bodyguards are taken out. Between two shotgun shots and my allies volley of shots, the battle is won. Too easy.

Bungie played it safe and took gameplay from the first and did nothing to extend it. The enemies seemed more intelligent but the scope was limited. If i remember right you piloted a warthog twice. The levels seemed like it was just a dungeon crawl with no open areas to speak of.

Halo 2 was the original game with just a 2 stuck at the end. Its gameplay essentially the same and its story incomplete.

btw i found that if you turn subtitles onto 'On' in the settings menu (they are on automatic by default) you get all the various grunts and laughs subtitled aswell as the speech, some pretty funny descriptors for the various barks and grunts in the cutscenes..such as

huff.jpg

As far as doing "nothing to extend" the gameplay, hello, dual wielding, vehicle jacking, interacting with AI (driving and equipping weapons), ONLINE PLAY, and allowing you to take the role of a covenant elite?]

Maybe poor choice of words. I meant mainly in terms of level design. I wanted to loadup my warthog and cruise around an open area and run over/shoot/maim Covenant and/or Flood. All I got was a straight shoot down a highway :( I couldn't fly my banshee anywhere except inside the canyon walls.

Right before the highway there were like 3-4 big open beach areas that you shot at Covenant with the warthog...

It's a miserable thread he can't pull himself away from.

Anyway, being weak sauce that I am, I played through the game co-op on normal. Now I'm playing through single player on normal to see all the pretty graphics in full screen. After that I'll move to Heroic and then beat it on Legendary. Gotta build up my tolerance! :D

I decided to respond to those who are not wounded by hearing opinions contrary to their own and post in an aggressive manner. But so as not to pollute the thread with this puerile banter, I'll relate to halo 2 in some fashion.

In the trailer for Halo 2, the showed Master Chief landing on a bridge and being surrounded by brutes and he takes out a plasma grenade and tosses it. Was this promotional footage or did I miss a cutscene?

After E3 2003, Bungie went back to the drawing board on that level. The were not happy with how it was designed, despite the praise.

So I spent a good deal of time playing Halo 2 Legendary last night and it seems to me that Bungie have upped the difficulty in Legendary to the point where it is no longer a really fun challenge (as with Halo) but more an exercise in sadomasochism and patience.

Your shields go down quicker than in Halo and now you don’t have any health. Bungie may claim your shields recharge quicker but it certainly doesn’t feel like the case on Legendary. You have a lot less ammo per gun, the enemies are smarter, more accurate and there are many more of them. I lost count of the number of Elites on the first level!

Anyone else feel like Legendary is now just a ‘bragging rights’ thing for those with the patience or am I just being a pussy?

I am having fun with the game, and the atmosphere is cool. It is not as over the top as I expected, due to the extreme hype..

A few impressions.

I just got past the "Heretic" battle (you will know what that means if you have gotten there).

What impresses me in this game is that Bungie has taken the good stuff from Halo and maginfied it. The tank sequence was good in Assault on the Control Room, but you spent most of the level using this huge gun on infantry - only a dozen or so vehicles.
I took out over 40 vechicles crossing the bridge into New Mombasa, and it was simply awesome. That's what a tank is for, man.

Likewise, the warthog and banshee combat sequences in Halo were good, but there were only a handfull of banshees in the game and you spend most of the time flying from point A to point B with only a brief scurmish in between. I just got thorugh a massive dogfight in an open space larger than several levels from the first game combined - it was truly epic. The warthog sequences in Old and New Mombasa covered literal miles of territory and dozens of vehicles - tanks, troop transports and ghosts. It was intense and, again, epic.

Likewise
the Flood are handled much better.
The tension in the second indoor section of the Heretic section, as you lower further and further into the facilitiy, was sustained over a huge period of time. I was glued to the screen like I have not been in years. The smokey, red corridors, creepy ambient music and generally improved combat with them all contributed to a level that is more fun, IMHO, than anything in all of the first game. The fact that
you are playing as an Elite was very cool, especially since you had the active camo ability
.

So far my only gripes are:

The texture pop-in during the opening cinematics is unfortunate. My Thompson drive is dying, and I have read that this may exagerate the problem, but it still takes some of the wow factor out. The issue seems to be gone in the later scenes, though - and they are even more impressive
such as the landing sequence on Delta Halo
.

You can only throw grenades about half as far, and they don't send people flying the way they did before.

The impacts from the Needler explosions are not as dramatic.

But those are minor quibbles. I'm simply blown away so far. I've been going back to Halo on Legendary every week for two years, and this game tops everything I loved about the first one.

No its very very very hard. If you can beat it you deserve to brag. My brother and I got to Regret on Legendary. Forget that shit. Its impossible. I could only imagine how much worse it would be solo.

Just finished the game! EXCELLENT!!! But was the only one who was like WTF no you guys didn't just do this to me at the end?

i agree with you, hamburgler. there are some spectacular set pieces, but the single player mode is generally disappointing. too much repetitive corridor crawling. and i wasn't too happy with the heavy covenant focus. luckily, the multiplayer mode completely redeems the game.

Waterworks needs to be completely removed from the game.

It's too convoluted and too big (at the same time!), etc.

It's probably the worst map I've ever played on from any retail FPS game.

This is one thing I absolutely hate about the matchmaking system... I'm guaranteed to come across this awful map. Replace waterworks with sidewinder and i'll be happy.

Funny, that's exactly how I feel about Sidewinder.

I think Waterworks is ok for CTF and Assault, but anything else,no.I bout shit my pants when someone put it on WW Slayer last night.

My rating for Halo2.

Graphics: 9.8 {Large levels, beautiful vistas, steady frame rate with some minor graphical glitches here and there}.

Gameplay: 10 {Epic sci-fi first person shooter with vehicular combat, co-op, sytem link and Live online multiplayer options}.

Loading: 8.5 {About 6-9 secs}.

Replayability: 10 {Enjoyable SP campaign and multiplayer modes}.

Options: 9.9 {It's missing the standard
volume control for audio and ryos support would've been nice}.

Sound: 10 {Excellent voice acting and a memorable haunting score}.

Overall: 9.7

I've enjoyed every pratically every minute of Halo 2. The ending although somewhat abrupt didn't bother that much. It did what it was suppose to do which was create anticipation for next sequel.

***Spoiler talk and Questions***

I'm suprised that it didn't end by allowing the player to use the scarab on that last level.

Master Chief reminds me of Kurt Russell in Soldier. One vs Seventeen is probably a coincendental reference. I need to read the books to catch up on Master Chief's life as a Spartan. Maybe somebody who has read the
books can anwser some of my questions.

Master Chief's real name is John?

Does Reclaimer=Spartan?

Who is Cassandra?

In the conversations from the universe the came with the game what is the summary of the prophet of truth's log?

The whole E3 2003 demo was just that, a demo. If you bought the LE package there is an hour long documentary on the origin of Halo 2. It was really intriguing because after E3 2003, while Bungie impressed everyone, they realized that all they really had was a demo and not a complete game. Plus they weren't going to be able to technologically accomplish some of the graphical effectsthat were there for the demo.

Zanzibar is the best map ever.

They drove it into us, I thought I was going to just stay away from it. LOL. The map is just the perfect map.

I completely disagree. For 16 player CTF games, I think it's about perfect. Give it some time - I used to hate it, but after playing a ton of games there have grown to love it.

No. It sucks for 16 player CTF games too. I played it enough already. Once someone gets the flag and successfully leaves the general base area, it's almost impossible to find him because of how stupidly the map is designed. I've yet to see someone find the damn flag carrier.

It's such a retarded map.

Now, I haven't played mulitplayer yet but can't you actually see the icon for your flag moving, and chase it?

No. Only when the flag is dropped do you have an indicator. (by default, you can change it in a custom game but all ranked games are like this)

Then don't let the flag carrier get completely away, or wait at the other base to catch him. What do you think is bad about the map - just that it has a fairly large number of routes between the bases?

The game is great, haven't played enough of the SP yet, but from what I've tried it's pretty cool
playing as an elite is cool as hell, fuck the haters

As for the multiplayer, is pretty rockin'. The people here on GAF are awesome to play with/against...wouldn't want to be in any other clan. I love the little touches added to the game, like the rocket launcher lock-on (BTW, you don't have to zoom in to lock-on), the jacking, duel-weilding, etc. The only thing I wish there was is a class system, like RTCW, that would make the multiplayer perfect. As it is, its nearly perfect, the mechanics rape RTCW, but I miss their classes...we got assault now, but we need them classes :(

Oh, one more negative about the multiplayer. Bungie must have thought were gamers are retarded because they don't let us narrow down optimatch searches, it does game/map choices automatically. So very stupid, good thing that I play with my clan most of the time, so I can ask to or change these settings myself.

Overall, i'm very satisfied with the game.

My two favs:

SMG + Human Pistol (One for accurate head shots, the other for da bullet hosing)

SMG + Covenant Pistol (Charge up shot to get rid of the shield, SMG finishes the job)

Your favs?
