Official Metal Gear Solid 4 TGS Thread

I just watched the full direct-feed trailer from konami website
Link? Is it 80MB?

Anyhow, I've watched it a few times myself with the best quality one being 80MB. I'm impressed for the most part. I didn't really have any qualms with the textures. If anything stood out the most as needing work, it was the animation imo. A lot of the running animation seem to not have enough frames and thus not be smooth and detailed enough.

The gameplay is looking good though. Some fun moves and tactics in there.

'Young' Snake looks a lot like his MGS version, if only for the longer thinner, longer face. Eight shades of viewtiful.

Heh. There might me different versions of Solid Snake faces in the game which the mask can mimic ala Mission Impossible style.

I got a serious Raiden-vibe from when the camera purposely showed Young Snake's hand on the statue's crotch. Seems like something Kojima would do to tease Raiden. Same with the crow poo as well.

I was half expecting Vulcan Raven in some form actually with all the crows.

He's holding a guys "peice" and the bird poop falls. Dude, I dont think thats bird poop I think thats a hidden splooge. :lol

The MGS whore in me sincerely hopes Snake is young and that old snake is simply a mask. Kojima is toying with us.

Its the completely the opposite. Solid is old and the young snake is just a mask. He's old for so many reasons gameplay and story-wise that I am too lazy to write them now. Forget about it :)

I understand that but I can hope right? When he takes his hand off of the mantle the camera pans up and you hear the suit revert back to its normal state. However you'd think that its a mask because his head was hidden but you can't see what his right arm is doing. He might have taken the mask off. :lol Im reaching but darnit I dont want him to die off.

The people bitching about the textures and those defending it are all a sham. When's the last time you played a Metal Gear Solid game for its graphics?

I don't play MGS FOR its graphics, but they've always been some of the most impressive. However, I think MGS4 is one of the best looking games I've seen so far, if not the best.

a much larger mgs4 project? I'm not sure that sounds like a new title, maybe a new assigned tasked for them to do for mgs4? I'm sure I could be wrong though.

I think they'll be doing the intro for the game, perhaps. Kyle Cooper may be too expensive these days. :)

I think this is right. If you don't like the idea of playing as Old Snake, you can pretend he's young by keeping the mask equipped or choosing an "I like MGS3!" before the game starts.

Has an HD trailer shown up yet? I see that Gamespot offers a link, but the link is current broken.

Just started watching the TGS show stuff.

I'd be greateful if someone could give me a quick rundown of the mad conspiracy theories surrounding the young snake in the MGS trailer.

dark I haven't seen the HD trailer, they typically don't come out this soon though.

There are so many theories going around it. Some say its just a joke Kojima tossed in there, others are thinking its annother clone.

a lot of those background textures have got to be placeholders.
Damn, I think I heard that before..... Just where? Hmm... Oh yes, at last years TGS when Kojima showed the first trailer.... -.-
I hope you guys won't say the same crap next year when the new trailer at E3 will be presented.... Seems to me some of you here dont wanna believe that MGS4 wont be the graphical overkill like it was MGS2. Dont get me wrong, one year ago I expected the same shit, but now..... sry, I'm not so optimistic any more guys.

I'm sure they'll introduce a young Snake in the game, especially if old Snake dies.

If this game sells well they have to leave it open for another "Snake" to star in Metal Gear 5 :D

I think it will be, though.

MGS2 was much more than the sum of its parts. When analyzed closely, you could easily spot a lot of issues, but while actually running, the overall impact of everything together was incredibly impressive. I think that will be the same deal here.

The lighting took a hit or something...they should bump up the contrast a bit.
You can safely chuck that to horribly CMYK converted screen captures. Konmi and Ruliweb are well known for that kind of disaster. I have very little doubt the game will in fact have colors just as strong as the E3 direct feed HD trailer available from IGN, because that one looked like a genuine RGB color footage for once.

Are these actually different real junior members, or some kind of joke setup with some GAFer coming on and typing out all the inane cliches of a "Sony hater" they can think of?

Here's my interpretation on the Young Snake/Old Snake thing:

Young Snake is... Snake when he is younger (post mgs2)
Old Snake is... Snake when he is older!

This game is meant to take place in multiple countries remember, therefore, multiple missions.
Even MGS2 covered a timespan of 2 years, and we know that Snake is ageing rapidly.

HOLY SHIT!

Did anyone else notice...that the MkII has OctoCamo just like snake does?

Check out 01:46 to 01:49 in the direct feed (low-res) trailer.

The MkII decloaks right before zapping the guy in the nuts. AWESOME!

whether the final game will be 'graphical overkill' is an open question, but i can't imagine they're going to ship it with a bunch of sub-ps2 textures that literally turn into indecipherable pixel mush when they're near the camera. it's at least a year away. "placeholder textures" was kind of a joke excuse last-gen, but asset creation becomes more involved at hd resolutions, and a lot of games do seem to swap textures as the development process moves along.

Then, Kojima brought out his first surprise for the day. He revealed that Metal Gear Solid 4 will feature real people. That is, the game will have 3D models created from real people through 3D capturing. The first example provided was of the MC, whose likeness will appear in the game. Kojima showed the process of converting the MC' face into 3D data, and the resulting model. This model looked close to the real MC, and Kojima stressed that there was a lot of hand-work to be done before it could be considered final.

Very interesting. Could that be why Snake looks so similar to Bean?

Moving on, the stage switched to a discussion of music, with a discussion of composer Harry Gregson-Williams' role. Kojima appeared thankful that despite the composer's busy schedule, they were able to get him to compose for the game.

Gregson-Williams appeared via a video message in which he mentioned that between work on parts 3 and 4 of the MGS series, he worked on over 40 films! "I feel very fortunate to be doing Metal Gear Solid 4," said the composer, "because it seems to be a combination of everything we've been doing with the previous games. Kojima was here recently, and he seemed to be bouncing up and down on the couch, which I hope means he likes the music. This is only a start -- it's safe to say that we have a long way to go with the music, but it's fair to say we've made a good start.

"Being a film compser, I'm used to watching a picture and getting my inspiration from there. But with MGS4, I had to depend a lot on what Kojima told me he wanted. One theme he told me is that Snake is on his last legs. Acoustic guitar was his idea, and I kind of liked it, so we went with that.

So glad Harry is back. It really wouldn't be MGS without his music.

Logan will also be designing the Metal Gear Solid 4 opening, Kojima revealed to close off the stage. The opening will have even more impact than the opening from part 3. It will be highly unusual for a videogame opening and will have game-like elements, said the logo designer.

So that's the big surprise. Definetly bigger than just designing the logo. It'll be interesting to see how well they do because Kyle Cooper's openings were fantastic, especially MGS3.

Does everyone who dont hype every shit from sony has to be a sony-hater? I dont think so. I had PSone and still own PS2. I love the MGS-Series (MGS1 is imo one of the best games of all time). So why do I seem to be a sony-hater? Just because I am dissapointed from what Kojima is donig right now? *löl* You're very funny man.

PS: Just because I'm new it dont makes my message less serious. I bet you were new once too, right? So please. First think, then write.

@dark10x: I'm aware of that. I know there will be much detail for sure, thats not the problem. But I'm not talking about that but rather of the "first graphical impression". And I dont think it will be that much breathtaking like it was with MGS2.

It's just that the things they're bitching about are literally retarded. Animation problems? A year of development time is left. I'm sure it's not an issue. What's another game-breaking complaints, let's see... something about environmental variety and color? We all know that, for one, Kojima doesn't like to show a lot in any of his trailers, and for two, I don't personally want a tooty-fruity war game. It's supposed to be colorless and gritty.

Uh, what were the other complaints?

its a ****in video trailer. WTF else is there to discuss other than the graphics? Like i said, these things wil probably be ironed out, if there's anyone i'd trust to have a game polished its Kojima, but i don't think there is anything wrong with mentioning that they are THERE. Or should we just ignore it and talk about how awesome Kojima is because Snake's hand is touching a penis statue.

I give up. It's just that I see far more good than bad here, and the bad is something that will obviously be fixed way before the game releases, so no, I don't really see much of a reason to bring those things up. There are so many great things about it and it just confuses me why people want to make a bitch fest about stuff that won't even be an issue.

But hey, I'm not under the impression that you think it looks bad. I just think the things people complaining about are pretty much pointless at this time. If these problems still exist next year closer to release, it will be totally justified.
