Here's what I don't get about the Royals: They've been bad for so long yet they still have no farm system of mention. HOW CAN YOU LOSE FOR SO LONG AND HAVE NO PROSPECTS??? Who's drafting here? I don't get it.

Horrible, horrible management.

A majority of the people currently in top positions on the team are not necessarily there because they're qualified, but because they were hand-picked by their predecessors. Current GM Allaird Baird was the protege of former GM Herk Robinson, who was John Schuerholz's right-hand man, etc, etc.

They operated without an owner, and under severe financial restrictions, from late 1993 until 2000 when David Glass bought the team. His son Dan Glass reportedly has last say in each and every personnel decision, rendering the General Manager almost completely useless. It's rumored that many deals Baird had completed were rejected by Glass, such as Jimmy Gobble to Texas for Kevin Mench, and Jermaine Dye to Toronto for Shannon Stewart.

Nearly all failed trades can be attributed to the Royals' insistence of trading for current team needs, rather than the best available talent. This was the case with the trades of Jermaine Dye for Neifi Perez and the trade of Johnny Damon and Mark Ellis for Roberto Hernandez, Angel Berroa and A.J. Hinch. Both trades were also crippled by the Glass' demand of receiving at least one Major League player in return. When trading Carlos Beltran, the Royals held out until they could acquire both a young catcher and a third baseman. They finally settled on a package of Mark Teahen, John Buck and Mike Wood, all of whom appear to be nothing more than third-tier major leagers.

Most drafts were stifled by a lack of funds and, more recently, the Glass family's reluctance to spend money on the best available talent. Only in the last few years have they made any attempt to spend significant money, and this was only after allegations by other owners that Glass had pocketed his cut of the league's revenue-sharing program.

I have to LOL at David Ortiz receiving 1%. I imagine everyone on the Yankee pitching staff voted for him.

UPDATE: 9 hits. 2 runs. 8 LOB through 4.

Allow me to use this for a moment, Em:

Fuck, I just heard on the radio that one of the top candidates for replacing Allaird Baird as GM of the Royals is none other than beloved former Tigers GM Randy Smith.

For those unfamiliar with Mr. Smith's past work, here's a very good summary, courtesy of Wikipedia.

Royals owner David Glass is very good friends with Astros owner Drayton McLane, who reportedly often advises Glass on various team issues, such as the hiring of former manager Tony Pena, who was at the time the manager of Houston's AAA team, and the Carlos Beltran trade, where Glass supposedly received a direct call from McLane asking what it would take to get Beltran on the Astros.

Anyway, Tal Smith, Randy's father, is the Astros team president and McLane's righthand man.

It just keeps getting worse and worse.

That is just plain terrible, I would have quit on that team along time ago if I was Buddy Bell, its like they like being mediocre.

This is the point in the movie where you hire the kid to coach your team back into the division hunt, only to lose in the final game against Detroit with the division on the line via an Ivan Rodriguez GW homer in the bottom of the 9th a la the movie Major League.

I'm really curious what the Dodgers are gonna do with Izzy in the next few weeks and beyond. Do we trade him? We obviously cant platoon him with Furcal.. you don't platoon a $13 million guy. They're saying Izzy or Raffy could play some 3rd, but then we remove the punch Aybar has offered. It could be pretty potent to have that much speed in the line-up though.

But as of now, you're not gonna get much for him....maybe platoon him for a bit just to show teams he can still play before trading him...

Izturis won't get much because offensively he really isn't that good, defensively he is awesome though. I don't think the Dodgers will get fair value considering his salary. Which team needs a shortstop right now?

Last year he was hitting around .350 before he nosedived and it turned out he needed surgery. The year before that he hit around .290 and stole something like 30 bases. He's become fairly solid on the offensive side of things, but it of course isn't on par with his incredible defensive skills.

His salary is relatively inexpensive at 3.2 million.

NEW YORK -- Chicago Cubs catcher Michael Barrett was suspended for 10 games and White Sox outfielder Brian Anderson five games for a bench-clearing brawl that led to four ejections.

Barrett's punch of Pierzynski after a collision at home plate earned him 10 games on the bench.

Barrett, who punched White Sox catcher A.J. Pierzynski to ignite the melee, and Anderson also were fined an undisclosed amount by Major League Baseball on Friday.

BA got what he deserved, Barrett got too little, and AJ got fined, which is total bullshit. Fined for what, getting his helmet?

If you could convert him into a 2B, you could increase his value. Hell, Mets' 2B situation is in flux with Kaz Matsui and WIC not giving Chris Woodward the light of day.

I know this sounds like bullshit since I am a Sox fan, but if it was AJ who punched Barrett, I wonder if he would have gotten only 10 games.

Um, dude's lucky it wasn't more. He sucker punched a player in the head.

And AJ shouldn't have been fined at all, he did nothing that wasn't in the rules of the game.

Well, AJ rapes young girls and grinds their bones to make his bread.

*throws wine glass* MISERABLE LITTLE PILE OF SECRETS

I think he could play 2nd.. I've also heard that he wants to go to Boston to play with Alex Cora again. He doesn't serve us at second though since we've got Kent there... Kent can also play first, but we've got Nomar there. Either way, we've got too many infielders who are starters in the bigs. Should be interesting.

There's no way the Red Sox trade for Izturis. They already have two guys very similar to him in Cora and Gonzalez.

10 games? gimme a break. AAAAARRRGH!! are the yanks a military unit this year or something? they are getting attrited something awful. now posada has gone down. we need a battlefield 2 type medic on the field.

Heh, Alex Gonzalez doesnt hold a candle to Izturis. Alex Cora doesn't either, but with Lowell playing so well and their infield being crowded, I guess he isnt playing much at all anyway for Cesar to team up with.

It would be great if the Braves won this game without getting a hit.

A Jeff Francoer walk scored the run :lol

Craziness.

Directly after the game where Barrett punched AJ:

"I saw a clean play by A.J. That's how you play the game," Cubs manager Dusty Baker said.

After the suspensions were handed out:

Was Baker surprised Pierzynski didn't get a suspension?

"Kinda. Yeah," Baker said. "Like I said, whenever there is a cause, there is an effect. The effect was Michael."

Gonzalez is as good as Izturis defensively, and it's pretty much a wash in the offensive categories-- both are lacking in that area. The only advantage I see is that Izturis is only 26, and may get better over the next few years. He's also coming off of an injury. I want nothing to do with him. The Red Sox have a guy at AAA (Dustin Pedroia) who will probably be their shortstop in the next year or so.

Meier said:
Outside of Omar Vizquel, there isnt a SS in the Majors as good as Izturis defensively.

If you look at the numbers, they're quite similar defensively. Gonzalez commits more errors than Izturis, but has a greater range factor. They've had similar fielding percentages in recent years as well. I think you are overstating his defensive abilities.
