Now I gotta see how the actual unit looks irl. The Nintendo glamour shots tend to... well, they're not always representative of how it looks "in the field". Release the dogs, Nintendo.

Says it's lighter and brighter. No word on GBA support or not, but I can't imagine they'd take that out...

In any case -- HOT! I'm all over that sucker.

You know the PSP is gonna outsell the DS for the next 5 weeks because of this stunt. Good going, Nintendo!!!

What is that, some sort of stay of execution?

Nintendo: "Oh yeah, and after Animal Crossing we have New Mario Bros. and after that we have Pokemon and after that we have some brain training stuff. Also some Zelda, some Tetris, the sequel to Nintendogs (Nintencats). And oh yeah, there's Nintendo DS Lite soon..."

Sony: "We've got larger battery capacity soon! And also sometime in 2008, FFVII: Crisis Core."

Nintendo: "Well yeah that game from Square is cool. I wish we could see a port of that, but we probably wouldn't be able to see it under the mountain of Mario Basketball, FFIII, Secret of Mana DS, Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles, Slime Morimori Dragon Quest, Dragon Quest monsters, Egg Monster Heroes, and also yeah the GBA is getting some of them remakes."

Sony: "...maybe...maybe PS3 will get a remake of FFVII..."

Nintendo: "Yeah, so maybe PSP will get a crippled port or something? I'll pray for you dudes. So how about that Media Create!"

OMG... that is so incredibly sexy! As Wayne from Wayne's World would say, "it will be mine, oh yes, it will be mine."

As if the DS wasn't a pain in the ass to use already.

To be fair, a problem with the current DS is its weigth and shape: making it smaller and also lighter should do wonders for your wrists.

Who exactly are you being "fair" to? Nintendo? The thing still looks uncomfortable, but I still want one.

actually someone at China has leaked the information 2 weeks ago
and now all he says can be confirmed
from what he says is basically all the fuinctions remain the same,
and the best part is the display of the screens have been improved a lot

well, i assume the screens are closer to sp2/micro quality, and it can't be any less ergonomic than the original ds design. i suppose i'll trade up when the next ds game i want comes out...probably rockman zex or new smb.

I knew it was smart to wait. Fuck yes, it looks so damn awesome too.

Now all Nintendo has to do is make SSB wi-fi for this thing.

And is it me or are the face buttons larger too? That'd make me really happy as the face buttons on the regular DS are just too small.

Looks nice but I want to see a picture of an actual unit before getting all orgasmic. :) Brightness settings and (what I assume is) a brighter screen mean instant purchase regardless. Guess I should go pre-order now to make sure I get one!

If this new DS is small enough, has GBA support, and a screen that's definitely brighter, goodbye Gameboy Micro.

Nice little improvement.
Hopefully, they fired the original designer. I mean, comparing the original to this...was that so hard?

The only reason I was pumped about the SP was because it turned a near-useless system into something I could play. I didn't finish a single GBA game until I got it.

Thankfully, the DS is already plenty useful.

As I figured, definitely no GBA -> SP or Micro. Slightly smaller, different look, adjustable brightness. Actually, doing the math, it is significantly smaller. The change isn't vast in any particular dimension, but what it amounts to is this thing being 58% of the volume of the original.

I don't see the power button, so I guess that's been changed to a switch on the side? While it was kinda nice to prevent power off/on when folded in your pocket, it also seemed a Bad Idea to have the power button nearly symmetrical with the Start and Select buttons.

It's going to go very well with a white Revolution ... ;)

yeah actually I think the fact that the redesign takes on revmote look is VERY significant. Represents a definite streamlining of Nintendo's strategy imho, and also probably the ratcheting up of the important connection Rev and DS are likely to share.

Because 1) I couldn't get a better pic at the moment and the perspectives are different and 2) I know nothing of Photoshop or his work, this comparison is not very accurate...

... but I tried my best to match the pics based on screen size, and it gives us a vague idea of the difference in size, and I think it will be pretty sweet:
