god of war came today.. im ashamed to say i am a launch ps2 owner and still never played it.. until today. Wow. Im only at the first save point but already excited, i love killing multiple enemies but already my thumb hurts from pressing square so much. Looks quite jaggy running 576p on a 720p tv but thats to be expected, im quite suprised at how high poly the characters are.

It's not a dual shock, though. The layout is the same, but the analog sticks are worlds better than the previous controllers.

Soz, should have said I HATE all console controllers (except the Wii) for playing FPSs. I was the original PC gamer (started on 3d wolf).

And the response from the PS3 controller was good. It felt a little too light though. I'd nearly want to strap something to it to give it a little heft. :D

I started as a PC gamer too (same era), but I've become used to controllers for FPS. :)

How does this game sharing work. If you buy a game you could share it with up to 5 people, right?

Dunno. I think you have to allow someone else to log into their PS3 as you, so you can download it for free.

Not sure it's really legal to be honest - I know it's against the rules for downloading Tekken, for example.

Yeah my brother is used to them, I know in theory it can be done, but I do not think it is for me. :)

I also had some hand cramps from playing on motorstorm, was that me or are the button mapping for that game a little off?

OT:
I kinda skipped the PS-PS2 and went from megadrive-snes-n64 to GC/Wii, the PC filled in the gaps for me.

(I got a GC for 20 quid near the end of it's life cycle with Metroid Prime, for some reason that game clicked, it was the lock and game design I think)

How do I get a speech bubble above my avatar in the PSN friends list?

There's an option for 'comment' under your profile. Click your own name in the friends list, or hit Triangle on it.

I think for me the PS3 seems like a Playstation2+, better and more, but in same vein. If you like the PS2 you will really like the PS3.

I think you can say this about most products, not just games consoles. I like Motorola mobile phones, I don't like Sony Ericsson or Nokia. That is because my first mobile phone was a motorola and I learnt their OS. The first Nokia I used couldn't even show the telephone number on one line, it had to use two. I've stuck with Motorola ever since.

The PS3 is just a PS2+, the Xbox360 is essentially a Xbox1.5, the Wii is a GC, there is no plus, just the remote.

The way I demonstrate the "superiority"* of the PS3 compared to the Xbox360 is have the 360 power brick on display on my AV stand. I show them the PS3 for a bit, then I boot-up the old man (360), it makes such a racket, whizzing and spluttering, finally loading something.

I don't even have to load games, just having the hardware side-by-side with the noise of the x12 360 DVD drive and the size of the power brick is enough to prove the point to most people. These are non-gamers, so the actual games are a bit irrelevant.

If you haven't used a Wii, the motion sensing capabilities of the Sixaxis are novel. The remote connection to the PSP is wow enducing, but not actually very practical.

The media capabilities of the two machines are pretty much identical, except for the web browser which is a disappointing oversight on MS's part.

Graphically Gears of War smokes anything on the PS3. Sony really need to get a showcase title out to market. Hopefully Heavenly Sword and MGS4 will deliver in this respect.

I think most people will be disappointed by the differences between Blu-Ray and DVD. You really need a 50"+ display.

Gears of War actually really jugs in splt screen mode and probably only manages 25fps. I expect Resistance actually plays a lot smoother in split screen. I'm working through GOW with a friend, we are going to move onto co-op Resistance after that.

*For the record the two systems seem pretty equal to me.

Agreed. The SS sticks are worlds apart from the DS2 sticks.. Playing fps-games does not make my head hurt anymore. :D

So basically if I buy a PS3 in Slovenia (small country, east of Italy, south of Austria), where the console is officialy sold and supported through Sony, I can't buy stuff on the PStore because my country is not on the list. I can't even make a 'fake' UK account and use my credit card as it happens to be the case with Xbox Live. Well, thank you, Sony. It's not like Slovenia is part of the EU, right? What the f*** is this shit?!

Zabojnik asks, Sony answers:

http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=23776

In short, you need to wait a bit and the store gonna be available in Slovenia as well. Or not, if slovenians will buy not enough PS3s. :p

"There are more than 102 territories in the region, and each Store has to be made unique for each territory due to different currencies and languages," he explained. "Stores will reach some territories in due course."

However, Sharples continued, some countries "won't get a store at all" due to factors such as lack of broadband penetration. "The PS Store may not be accessible in Azerbaijan, for example," he added.

Borat am cry.

"However, Sharples continued, some countries "won't get a store at all" due to factors such as lack of broadband penetration."

Well, that shouldn't be a problem, then. They can't blame it on the currency either, as we use euros as well now. Here's hoping.

PS3 Launch Weekend - Outsold By 360?

9 The free-TV, rather subdued, European launch of the PlayStation 3 is done, and the sales figures for the first (and crucially important) weekend are being calculated. Speaking to ***** today, a Sony spokesman would not even hazard an opinion with regard to the weekend's sales figures, stating that the company is awaiting figures from Chart-Track.

Nor are any of the major retailers prepared to comment, on the record, anything but bland PR-driven statements.

Under terms of strict anonymity, however, ***** was told by they contact at one branch of a major retail outlet, that on both Saturday and Sunday it sold more 360s than it did PS3s. Is that a bad sign? Yes. This soon after launch it would be just about acceptable for the masses of expensive, late PS3 stocks to be moving slowly. However, for the 360 to outsell it at launch weekend should come as a shock to Sony.

There's a reason ***** is a censored word on this site (mostly to do with the whole 'making shit up' thing). Please don't post their articles by proxy.

Just watched the Playstation 3 HOME demo on youtube.com for the first time. Now I'm having thoughts about seriously buying one. =/

4 days later and no official PR from SCEE? Somehow I think they're waiting for Gfk and Charttrack to come out and respond to those, which IMO, isn't so good for Sony.

You can prolly connect it on composite to rule out the HDMI cable. Same with old TV if its still around.

Pretty strange though, none of them should interfere with wifi frequencies. But if your signal level was rather low originally, even small distortion may kill the rest of it.

Personally I didnt have any problem setting wifi running, except having to type all those SSID and WFA keys with mobile-like keyboard :p. Ah, once my router was gone of connection list after playing with security methods, but restarting the PS3 and router did help. I also use HDMI and LCD TV.

Me again. Right - the Wii, which is two feet away from the PS3, is connecting just fine. As is a laptop and a Palm PDA.

My (2nd) PS3 will not. Really, really annoying.

PR says 165,000 sold in UK alone over opening weekend... beats 105k for Wii and 70k for 360.

Small question for those who got Motorstorm.

Wanted to try the online mode, DLed the patch, it said to restart the system, so I did it using the PS button on the controller -> shut down, and right before it went off, my PS3 made three quick "beeps". Is that normal ? :|

Other question, I can't join the EU servers right now, can anyone confirm they're down ? AU/NZ servers work fine, tho.

The PS3 loves to beep when shutting down with a disc inserted in the drive. It's normal, don't worry about it.

My PS3 has never beeped and I always shut it down with a disc inserted (Resistance is the one, altho initially it was Motorstorm).
Should I be worried?

EDIT: Maybe it only happens when you shut it down from the console? I had to since I just had my first PS3 lock-up (was watching a Resistance match in spectator mode when the PS3 locked up) and shutting down from there gave me the 3 beeps, but when shutting down from the SIXAXIS it never beeps for me.

I shut it down using the sixaxis. This beeping made me go crazy for a sec "omfg I killed teh beast noooooooooez" :lol

Well, I guess nothing's wrong.

ANyways, did someone manage to get on the EU servs of Motorstorm ? Haven't tried for a while now, but it was completely impossible 2 hours ago or so. A prompt was telling me that it couldn't retrieve the user data from the PSN, or something like that (dunno what the message would be in english exactly)

Well, it usually makes one quick beep, but this time it was a triple (T-T-TRIPLE) one. It booted up with no problem after that, but since I couldn't connect to EU servs of MS, I was like "great, I just screwed everything up lol"

Well anyways, thanks for the info guys, I feel better :p (well, not exactly, I feel bad when I see how much I suck at motorstorm xD)

I'm probably being stupid but here's a few questions about the music settings:
How do I switch between visualisers, I've pressed Square and the visualiser button, but it goes between the XMB swirl and one type of visualiser.
Also to import Album covers, do I need to get them of the net and put it onto the HDD or can the PS3 do it automatically?

I am not sure about album covers - PS3 added one for one big mp3 (dj mix) I had, so it probably was encoded into mp3???

And I dont think you can switch current visualizer, it does it automatically...

how do you convert videos for use on ps3 using a mac?

I have a 1 gig usb drive, a mac, a ps3 and have no clue how to get videos to work on the ps3.

Ckid said:
ok thanks, already have ffmpegX so ill give it a go. to bad my mac is slow as hell.

still doesnt seem to be working :(

If by not working you mean the videos you made when playing them on the PS3, be sure to make them using AVC main profile, AVC Level 4.1 (3.1 and 4.2 should work as well *correction, 4.2 doesn't work on PS3 for me, video stays black, 4.1 instead is perfect*, not sure about how many more work) and AAC for sound.
I found out the hard way (all my H264 encoded stuff doesn't work on my PS3 because I made them all with AVC High Profile and AVC Level Unrestricted before having a PS3 and only yesterday learnt about this after reading the online manual and stuff at doom9.org because i was wondering why they would give me the "unsopported data" message on PS3).

Sony probably want to wait out this week I guess with March ending on Saturday.
When do they have their stockholders/financial meeting?

Hmmm, just remembered this problem with the PS2 as well.
Well, I never had any problems with my PS2 with RGB scarts and DVD playback.
But now that I think about it, the scart I used with my PS2 to read DVD's had 20 connectors, but wasn't a TRUE RGB scart. Yeah, in fact, some vicious scart manufacturers put those 20 pins, but only 10 are connected actually, so in fact it's an S-VIDEO Scart (I think it's 10, and 8 for composite scarts).
Problem is, you won't get the same quality than with an RGB cable. But as far as I remember, there's a good improvement as compared too Composite.

You can also find RGB scarts with a small switch too, with a "DVD" position and a "Other" position. Just have to switch it when you play a DVD. Problem is, I don't know how this works exactly. But I guess the switch and the DVD position will just make the cavle use the 10 pins for S-Video.

I think the best you can do is to test an S-Video Scart and see if you like the image quality. Then you could buy an RGB scart with this switch thing, would be less annoying to switch from games to movies using that, than just having to plu/unplug your console and TV.

very interesting! any idea where i could buy this connector?
i have a European console and a European TV but I guess that won't make a difference.
My direct scart has a 'composite-in-adapter' halfway through the wire... I really find it useful and would like to have this too.

Thanks!

March 31st is end of financial year for Sony.

And also, we wont get other markets in few days...

I actually put a CD in my PS3 for the first time last night.

The machine connected to the net and pulled down the track listing info, just like iTunes.

I know it's not something technically difficult, but it was still cool to have the track listing just appear.

I assume the 360 does this too, but I've never put a CD in that machine either.

Yeah, I was surprised too. But I, like you never used a CD in my Xbox 360. It would've been even nicer with cover art for the CD too...

Whoo boy.

I'm currently at a small town in southern Finland doing a small gig for my company.

I went to eat, walked past a mom&pop electronics store. I just thought that what the hell, let's see how much is the PS3 should the have one.

679 euros, the normal finnish price.

I -almost- bought one. The idea of my girlfriend's red face while she shouts at me was the only thing that stopped me.

That was a close call.

Maybe next week. :<

you can actually rip cd directly to hd, and it get track info and album cover from the net...

Easy.. Use the built in browser and google pic the cover art. Save the art to the HDD.
Go back to XMB and while in the music section, highlight the album you want to add the album art to. Press Triangle, then Information.. In there you can click the folder, and add a new cover. :)

Ok, now I know what is bothering me since launch. Why in hell Tekken is not avail on german PS Store?! Too much violence? :p

P.S. Interesting limitation. When you bring on XMB during video playback, video preview icons dont move. Could have offloaded em to different SPU, I suppose.

I'm still curious.. has anyone seen any PS3 software sales figures yet from Germany or France?

They aren't out yet, I think. But just for the record, there were actually more systems allocated to Spain than to Germany, so sales should be higher in the former.

Got mine launch day w/ Motorstorm & RFoM. Girlfriend's not too impressed, thinks Resistance "could be on PS2". I'm very impressed with the physics and the amount of detail. Motorstorm is hard, that it all I have to say :)

Anyway, I have a problem: I have it connected via HDMI and when I put a DVD in the signal goes (TV says "no signal"). Should I connect through something else? Should I take the PS3 back?

PSN: EanF

Wow, that is VERY perplexing to me given Germany's around double the population!

Yeah, but in Spain the PlayStation brand is quite HUGE when it comes to gaming.
Actually, Sony was expecting to overtake Xbox360 accumulated sales in the country on day one. [which means two things: 1) Most Spaniards wouldn't buy the Xbox360 even if their lives depended on it and 2) They were expecting to sell a whole lot].
