Official PAL PLAYSTATION®3 Launch Thread

Same here, I just saw today for the first time the PS3 here in Spain and I'm very disappointed.

First of all that thing is HUGE, looked much bigger than the 360, altough maybe it's just because of the weird curved shape or the black color.

The unit had motorstorm running and it looked like any 360 game, I don't see any reason to pay 600€ euros for a machine that offers me nothing new when I already have the 360 and a Wii, I'm sure this will change though, and in a year or two I'll pick it up, when the big hits start coming.

So I saw this and was like : woah shit!

And I asked myself, then GAF (in this topic, see!) "Can I get demos off the Japanese Store?"

Seriously guys, you who think the PS3 is huge, and doesn't show much improvement over current Xbox 360 games. Where have you been? Living under a rock the last couple of months?

Was wondering the same. :/

If Resistance, VF4, MotoStorm and all the goodies available on the PSN dont convince you in buying one, that's not a problem with the PS3 you know.

Besides, I just cant imagine myself not buying ANY system on launch day. I always did. I just hate being late to the parties. It's not like consoles are announced one day and released the day after. So I can easly save money for when the time comes.

I'm pretty damn ready for EU-launch! RR7, Resistance, VF5 and a Sixaxis. The only thing missing is Motorstorm and the damn console...

What a shame. Better get rid of those stickers on your nice Sony Bravia.

Out of interest, will a US version of Resistance provide access to EU servers or are you forever doomed to play on US servers with associated latency?

I've wondered this quite a bit and it's put me off importing network titles since it seems to be a stealthy way to regionally encode a game even if without physical protections on the disk.

So far I've restricted my pre-order purchases to hardware like an extra controller, remote and PS2 card reader.

So far, Resistances' online-thing only regonizes the consoles' region. So basically, Europe will only be able to play with Europe, and so on. However, I remember some rumours about Resistance having international servers in a patch.

Can someone confirm that?

I need to know this too, but there seems to be no solid confirmation at all regarding this matter. I only got Virtua Fighter 5 so far, but I really want Motorstorm and Resistance come launch, but I'm not getting it here in Sweden. And it takes a couple of days to get the games delivered from Canada.

Very nice. :) Can you select between different demos?

Yup but there are only Motorstorm and F1 at the moment.
IMO Sony could have chosen better demos to showcase the system (Motorstorm demo is old and it's a very simple track without mud, it's like showcasing GT4 with the basic ring track, F1 is nice but not jaw dropping although I've personally heard people believing it looked like a real TV race :lol :lol ). Hopefully once the console is launched retailers can put full games in the demo station.

The demo version of F1 is nowhere near as impressive looking as the final game (which looks insane), by the way.

Which confirms that Sony should have put more effort in choosing the right things to showcase their system ;)

I never understood why they put those ps3's in the plastic bubbles like that. I mean I guess it looks cool, but if I had a nickel for every time I saw a frozen Motorstorm kiosk...

so whatever happened to the march PS3 update? i heard a while back that Sony was supposed to release a major update for the PS3....is that still coming this month?

i want to change the theme color without having to mess around with the date and time dammit.

I just saw the PS3 in Portugal (Lisbon). That thing is a monster, and way too shiny. But it's cool, it'll stand out like crazy in my living room when I get it (eventually).

BTW it was running motorstorm in a big ass HDTV with portuguese menus, it's nice to see that all the languages are on the disc.

March 23rd. Maybe a few days earlier for Japan and the US.

Translation:
A German site called Cynamite got its hands on a PAL PS3. The first thing they took for a spin was, of course PS3's BC. Sony promised that around 1000 titles will work on start. The tested games were:

God of War
MGS 2: Sons of Liberty
MGS 3: Snake Eater
Shadow of the Colossus
Guitar Hero 2
Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones
Okami
GTA: Liberty City Stories
Eragon
Final Fantasy X-2
Ratchet & Clank 3
Lumines Plus

So how many did work you ask? Only one. Which one? Eragon...

:lol Yup You won't be able to play such hits as GoW, Okami, SotC, GTA, R&C, MGS BUT Eragon will be there for you.:lol

:(

Someone from Argos confirmed that they had run out of their allocation by the end of Feb, but that Sony then told them that they will bring in additional consoles by Marcg23rd, so they continued selling them.

I wonder how many PS3's will Sony actually have on sale on 23rd in Europe? More than 1mil? With production up, why not?

From the Threespeech event in London with Phil Harrison (first news):

http://www.playthree.net/2007/03/european-ps3-has-over-1200-compatible.html

European PS3 has over 1200 compatible PS2 titles (and rising)

I've just come back from the ThreeSpeech.com Playstation 3 event at 3Rooms in London. It was encouraging to see some of the fattest and nerdiest bloggers out in force.

Phil Harrison basically gave a recap of his presentation at the GDC. Although there wasn't any new revelations, the demonstraton of Playstation Home went down very well with a couple of people gushing praise.

* The Playstation Home team are working to allow people meeting in Home to launch directly into a game.

* Phil said Sony are looking at ways for people to sell items to one another, however they do not want to become a bank and take on the responsibility and regulations that entails.

* There is a long-term plan to allow people outside a cinema/movie theatre in home, to 'go in' and download the film to their PS3.

* Possibly some aspects of Playstation Home will be accessible via the PSP, obviously limited by its hardware.

* Phil did confirm that the PAL/Euro version of the Playstation 3 currently has over 1200 compatible PS2 titles, with more to be added to the list by the time the console launches. This will be via a necessary firmware upgrade to 1.6 (the consoles were shipped over 4 weeks ago.)

* The Sony PR man said that a new HD camera and mic. with spatial awareness will be coming later in the year. Also downloaded PS1 games playable on the PS3 will happen- but later this year.

So, what about Bluetooth headsets? I'm looking at Logitech Mobile Traveller Headset (980399-0914) pretty cheap but is it good? Does it work with the PS3? Has anyone tried it?

Maybe Nokia BH-300?

yep. If you buy it in a years time and its still the same price, you've missed out on all the launch fun and a years worth of gaming.

Still, I'm at the stage where I'm ignoring 'nothign the 360 doesn't do' posts from now on. I just can't understand why the people feel the need to make the comment.

I checked out the JB in Bourke Street, Melbourne. They've finally got a PS3 there as well with a 32" hdtv to display it. Kinda wasted opportunity though as they were showing the Talladega Nights BD and not any games.

:D :D :D

There's another blog take on the 3Rooms event last night. Hints that they are addressing the most popular titles:

http://www.petecullen.net/?p=176
As of yesterday, there were 1200 PlayStation 2 titles which are compatible with the new software emulation on the European PlayStation 3. We weren’t given any specific titles, but the key titles have absolutely had the most work put into them. Expect God of War 2 to be compatible come launch day. Phil also expects that number to grow over the next week, so when you plug in your PS3 on launch day (if you are lucky/rich enough to get one) the console will automatically download a firmware update (Version 1.6) which will enable you to play your PS2 titles. Not that anyone is going to want to play anything other than Resistance or Motorstorm on launch day, right?

The guy has a bunch of photos from the event too:

1200+ BC titles, 1080p HOME, remote play in 1.6 - and yet people will spin it as a bad news for Sony :p.

EDIT:

Already starting:

Let's hope the feature is disabled by default to prevent drive-bys.

1080p ain't really confirmed just yet though as he doesn't refer to a comment by one of the SCEE people. I've sent Pete Cullen the question though asking him if it was a personal assumption or something they told.
