Official Pre-E3 Madden 2006 Thread! New info coming on Apr. 16!

Well friends, it's that time again. Time for the consistently popular and successful franchise over the past 15+ years to get its yearly update. This is an especially exciting year because we will see the debut of the first next-next-generation madden. i dont know about you, but i can't wait to see it. hopefully it blows us away just as madden 2001 did all those years ago! april 16th is the word on the street when EA will officially begin to release info on the upcoming years version. i know we've already had a wish-list thread, but since we know when concrete info is coming out i thought i would revise it. here is what i'm hoping for:

* Revamped penalty system; i want to be able to use PI's and other penalties to my advantage, and i want those things to hurt me. for instance, you could have an "aggression" setting (not unlike ESPN NBA/NBA live/etc) where if you are more aggressive you have a better chance to put the Offense on lockdown, but also draw more penalties.

* Quicker animations; the way things are now, the PA pass develops so slowly that the one and only way it will work is if the defense isn't blitzing. if you are being blitzed by an extra man or two (not uncommon) and you try a playaction, odds are you will get sacked or have to hurry the throw so quickly it's pointless. the animations need to be much quicker, get in and out and let us throw.

* Tweaked running game; the running game is pretty good as it is, but they really do need to fix the "mario" running as VC calls it. they have made strides over the years, but there are a couple times each game where i am stuck running in place behind someone. it should be completely eliminated this year.

* Tone down CB effectiveness; speaks for itself, but not to the point where they are brain dead

* Improve collission detection; this goes hand in hand w/ CB effectiveness. as it is now, if the cb's hand is anywhere in the vicinity of the ball, it gets knocked down, despite the fact that his hand never physically TOUCHES the ball. the harm in this is two-fold: defenses are overrated, and as an offensive player you are unable to really "rifle" a ball between defenders because the detection on a knocked down ball is so forgiving that it will 9/10 times for certain be knocked down.

anyways those are just some of the things i am looking forward to. i'm planning on getting into e3 one way or another this year, and unlike joke sites such as madden mania and operation sports whose "e3 details" read like a press release, i will give you the real dirt friends! dm will be there too

p.s. if you don't like madden, if EA ruined the industry, if EA killed your cat/dog, if EA bought your favorite company, if EA destroyed your favorite company, if EA fired you, if EA fired a family member of yours, if EA didn't hire you, if EA is the cause to all of the problems in the world, then just don't post in this thread. make your own thread, and call it "Asshole Diaries: The Story of EA" thanks ladies

Is Madden being designed for Xbox2 or PS2? I am interested in seeing which direction they go for the next generation.

Oh yeah, Madden rocks but sports fans need to give Winning Eleven a try too. :D

We've done enough wish lists :( Whatever happened to that madden fansite that got info? Why did EA show them stuff if they couldn't write about it?

Xbox 360 is the lead platform next gen. Unless the PS3 blows Xbox 360 out of the water. Xbox 360 is the lead platform this year for next gen. :P

Fuck Madden. I wanna hear some info on NCAA 2006. Like, you know, if they fixed the problem where wide receivers didn't catch the ball....EVER.

Is that confirmed by EA? I am just wondering if they are making the game from the ground up for Xbox2 or if they are just doing a insanely nice looking port for Xbox2?

Hopefully they make it ground up for Xbox2 so we can see a truly next gen sports game.

Nice, stoked for Madden again this year and can't wait to see what they'll come up with on XBOX 2. Wallet am crying though when I'm buying it for XBOX, XBOX 2 and PSP.

correction, long bombs were completed at a high rate! it's the 5 yard dump off's wide open that weren't!

NCAA 2005 had so many god damn problems i dont even want to get into it. it is without a doubt (in my mind) the worst football game EA has ever released for its time.

ewww, I don't think any amount of praising will get me to pick up NCAA 2006 this year, yeah, 2005 was THAT bad. Luckily Gamestop treated it as a down-payment on Madden.

Think I'll skip lending $50 to GS this year.

Please don't forget the passes in the flat to the RBs that would result in the pass hitting them in the back of the head. JUST FUCKING TURN AROUND ONCE!

sad part about ncaa 2005 is that up to that point (ncaa 2004 and before), the series was really building up and was a nice alternative to madden. while casual gamers look at both and say "NCAA = MADDEN W/ COLLEGE TEAMS!" we all know better. ncaa has always been more fast paced, a real change up to madden. the games were similar, but also different. i really felt NCAA was close to catching madden overall (although i will always like pro more than college because that is what i like in real sports). hopefully they can bounce back, but it is going to take (as jason kidd would say) "a complete 360 turnaround" ;)

Madden on the Xenon will look good but won't truely reach its potential until the rest of the consoles come out. As always EA will have to develop for the lowest common denominator which will be the PS2. It'll be amazing nonetheless even though I loathe EA and wish they would die. :lol

I definately must seen an improved running game for me to purchase this iteration of the franchise. One of my favorite aspects of NFL2K5 was the running game. It was bliss for a player such as myself who believes in running the ball to set up the pass. I like to run the ball when the person knows Im going to run the ball and in which direction because nothing demoralizes them more than knowing what the play is and not being able to stop it. Maddens running game imo was boring in contrast to 2K5. I didn't feel like my blockers were smart. They didn't pick up the defender they should have, and it took too much button work just to get from the line of scrimmage. In Madden if you hit turbo too soon then your blockers would let their man free which is retarded, especially when you need to get away from a blocker in a hurry. 2K5's blocking scheme was brilliant and allowed you to find the hole, and the gap, hit it and get some good yardage. I also favor the charging system.

wow i have to take the bait again!

nfl 2k5's running game was crap for the following reasons:

1. shoulder charger is a fucking joke with "power backs". it takes no skill to tap Y Y Y Y with ricky williams and be off 20 yards downfield

2. holy crap wtf? no offense, but you thought 2k5's blocking schemes were "brilliant"??? was that the scheme where your lineman simply didn't block, or the one where your FB went after the strong safety 15 yards downfield instead of the linebacker 2 yards from him? i admit madden has it's blocking problems too, but not on the 2k5 level.

3. "tapping" turbo is unnatural and crappy

i have played a lot of people who whine about maddens running game, and in each case i see their problem immediately. they dont use the pressure sensitive juking effectively. people wonder why they cant run up the middle in madden, then i see them jam on the juke button and i know why.

i know what personal preference & opinion are, but it's hard for me to swallow (kind of like the old analogy i use where you say you like a poop sandwich over a hamburger)

Hahahaha,ESPN's running game, and just a football game as a whole was a joke, never again will you suck me into your trap Konex!

Yeah, and I don't think EA will commit to a completely parallel development just for Xbox 2, they'll wait until at least two next-gen platforms are out. And then I would expect PS3 to be lead platform for $ reasons.

To add to the improvements you listed, I'd like to see a modern physics engine put in. It would be pretty amazing to not only get top-notch animations, but also get random ragdoll type hits as well. I really think this would break up the monotony of seeing the same hit lots of times, and better yet, it would make hits on receivers going up the middle look real. Think half life 2 shotgun blast and replace it with shawn taylor hitting randy moss crossing the middle, the possibilities are infinite (although there needs to be a stopping point for the limbs so they don't bend too far and it looks like they broke all of their bones).

Off to go work on this game, hopefully you guys wont complain to much about it ;) Afterall our dev time hasnt been too long. It shouldnt be all that long before you start seeing some cool stuff.

You work on Madden....uh oh. I think I can hear CK typing all the way from the midwest. :D

After thinking about this a bit more, I really like FMT's idea of aggression sliders, infact I'd like to take it a bit further. I'd like sliders for more things, like having your defense play run or play the pass.

When I move the slider towards run, I want my safety to line up as the 8th man in the box, until I tell him differently. On 3rd and 15 I want to be able move the slider all the way to Pass and have my DLine to pin their ears back and rush the QB without any consideration for the run. I'd also like there to be appropriate consequences for getting caught on the wrong side of that slider. PA should work really well when there's 8 in the box, and draw should be able to get me 7-10 yards when the D is playing Prevent.
In Madden 2005 there really is no consequenses for doing the double safety fake blitz every single play, on pass plays the safeties somehow are always able to get back into coverage. And the Dline split with outside rush generates WAY too much pressure. It's not uncommon to play an Optimatch game where the defense bumps, moves the safeties to the line, and does the line spread every play. Consequently, both have been banned in most our league games. Ideally, good play calling would force the defense to leave the slider on "balanced".

I'd like to be able to tell my CBs to play the slant pattern, or to play the sidelines when the clock is running out. I don't want a simple freakin' corner route to be considered borderline cheese, a route that has also been banned in our league games. It's a very legitamate route and the AI should be able to cover it, and I should be able to call it whenever I feel like it.

I just want adaptive A.I. for my defense,if a guy is running the same play over and over and over, you better believe they'd put a stop to that shit in real life.In the game the CBs act like it's the first time they've seen the play all game every time :P

Madden's engine needs to be rebuilt for me to buy it.

I mean my WR got the ball close to the sideline, was pushed out, and the refs called it out of bounds. It's no way to challenge that crap.
Also, the presentation is ass compaired to what was ESPN.

Presentation!? Dude, I'll buy any other complaint, but since online play is the way to go, and EVERYONE skips cut scenes online, why the fuck does presentation matter?

Ok, just before someone else reminds me......Madden's commentary is so, so bad. That must fall under "presentation" and it really needs to be overhauled. Aside from that, my point stands.

I would like to see more intelligent blocking as well. Way too many times I've seen a blocker watch a guy go by him because he was focused in on another player 10 yards away from him.

Mario running needs to go.

Challenge plays during online games.

Let me slide while playing online. It worked a couple of weeks ago, but lately it doesn't again. There is nothing scarier than watching your QB "superman dive" into an approaching LB. Gee I wonder if I'll fumble this.

The CB's being able to tip a ball that is five yards from them is straight up comedy. But in the same regard I would like to understand how the deep ball gets by some many defenders so easily. Madden and NCAA have both had these problems for awhile now.

I like all the defensive options they give you before the snap. They just need to streamline it better. The button hitting I have to do before the snap to actually be able to defend some players is ridiculous.

I'm very curious about the Xbox 360 version. How many GAFers will actually be buying the new Xbox and then a second copy of Madden?

cause I still play sports games offline.

MLB2K5 spoiled me.

Ooooh boy. You just got yourself into a world of trouble.

For starters read:

Madden 2006 Wishlist

Then:

GAF Madden Season 3

GAF Madden Season 2

After that, I will fedex you the notes I have taken. It's a hefty package, friend.

Listen, fact of the matter is this - you guys know that for the hardcore, fundamental football player, the game was broken. Madden 2005 had exploits out the ass. Fix these and I am happy as a pig in shit. I understand the need to cater for the Madden Bowl, and that most casuals won't find the game breaking bugs that we do or form rules about what plays can and cannot be used against one another because of the exploits, but if you're going to claim to be the most realistic football title out there, don't dick around with some of the core gameplay elements. Yeah, franchises are nice, yeah so are online leagues, and rushing attack, and practice, and stupid shit like that; but here I am playing well over 500 games if not closer to a thousand and still coming back because of the core in game mechanics. Not because of EA Trax, not because I am trying to sign whatever free agent to my ultimate franchise team, and certainly not because I want to create the craziest fan. Gameplay first, frills second is all I ask.

Agreed. NCAA 2005 may have been ass but the series as a whole is still the best EA sports game. NCAA 2004 was godly.

I dunno about that... I've been hideously burned when guys like Troy Vincent, Lawyer Milloy, and Champ Bailey completely whiff on a ball. My broken controller(s) can attest to that!

Seriously, presentation is the last thing I want them to focus on.It takes all of one game before I'm rapidly tapping A to get through all of that bullshit.

I second that sonnyboy, i was a long time die hard madden fan..well im 30 now so i been there with every madden but ESPN NFL 2k5..took the crown when they came out with such a sweet running engine and pass engine..granit..the DB had some issues along with a few other things but ESPN's running game is righteous !

I will hold my breath and pray to the lord that EAsports improves this aspect along with getting a new team of graphic artists..

Someone said presentation is the last thing on the list that needs fixing..well i'll tell ya one thing...ESPN's presnetation and atmosphere created by the cool cut scenes really brought the game to life...play a game of ESPN then play a game of Madden..tell me which game feels dead and which game feels alive....k?

what the balls? you are calling ESPN's PASSING system sweet!? holy shit. i dont even feel like dignifying a statement like that with a response, but im a sucker so i will. first off the passing in ESPN 2k5 is a joke, and the causes are two fold. for one, the passes are too floaty. when i want to BULLET a pass, i want it to get there quickly, i dont want the game going into matrix mode and taking forever for the ball to be delivered. THAT is why i can play as the safety and cover the entire field from side line to side line with one man. next, the DB AI is so atrocious that passing becomes a crapshoot that usually ends up in favor of the offense. and last, the animations (not the animations themselves, but the ones the game chooses to display at any given time for the situation) completely ruin it. i have a man open down the middle, i throw it, and he does some stupid fucking matrix-mode dive when he could have ran through the catch.

read his post more carefully. HE PLAYS MOSTLY ONLINE! you tell me what the hell presentation matters online. there is no one in their right mind that is going to argue with you that madden is superior to nfl 2kx presentation/commentary wise, but that doesn't mean a damn thing online. if you are concerned about the presentation online, then you aren't concerning yourself with your opponent. i play football games online to beat my opponent. to scheme against him and to see what works. i DONT play football games online to hear "witty" remarks such as "Oooh that passed just slipped through his hands, guess he shouldn't have eaten so much fried chicken this afternoon!" (actual quote from a VC football game) or for some snazzy graphic to pop up telling me that Tim Rattay went to louisana state, holds the ncaa record for passing and enjoys fishing in the offseason. guess what? i dont give a shit. it looks nice, and perhaps if i were watching the game on demo mode i would care. but i am playing a game to win, to be involved, not for presentation.

nfl 2k5 can have all the life it wants in presentation. the gameplay is dead and broken. madden is cock of the walk baby!

Well friends, it's that time again. Time for the most anticipated and successful gaming franchise of all-time to get its yearly update.

I think Super Mario Bros for the NES has outsold the last ten maddens' combined sales. Maybe even all of the Maddens combined. Most successful franchise? I think not.

And I do not think Madden is the most anticipated gaming franchise, either. </picky>

the ricky williams thing can possibly be attributed to "rookie" mode (although in our ESPN GA league on Legend i had plays similar to that... with kevan barlow...)

but how the fuck do you justify willie roaf raping a defense like he did? i dont care if its on Toddler mode, that shit shouldn't fly ever
