Switch UP WoW, PS5 down WoW, Software sales are below ok, Japan needs the Switch 2 ASAP and the PS5 needs GTA6 as soon as possible.

GTA6 won't do much for PS5 in Japan; AFAIK it isn't a massive IP in that region.

The only thing that'll help PS5 in Japan at this point are a price cut and more games like MHW, Astro Bot & Yotei on a more regular/consistent basis.

Needless to say at this point, the chances for either happening are quite low. So I guess they're gonna ride out the rest of the gen and hope their PS6 portable recovers market share for them in Japan.

The only thing that would help the PS5 in Japan is if you made it a portable device.

Ps5 needs a price cut. GTA VI could bump sales my 100k for launch week but it'll be back to low sales thereafter.

I hope Sony plan on producing the ps5 for a few years after ps6 but most importantly sell it for $300 as a lower entry to the ecosystem.

A ps5 sale would be just as profitable going forward and with crossgen lasting up to 5 years they can justify it.

I know, i have been saying this for months, but some people here says that the Playstation situation is good in Japan and everything is under control. The BIG issue at this point for the PS5 is the Switch 2 when start to receive all the third party games…

MW is way bigger in Japan and it barely managed to do 100k, maybe 40-50k for the launch week, with a bundle of course because the PS5 price in Japan makes no sense… If Sony wants to increase the user base in Japan, adopting the Nintendo strategy for the Switch 2 is not an bad idea.

Price price and price. When it was more competitively priced it was doing good numbers. Getting multiple price increases isn't going to help sales. It'll still end up selling 8-10m which is healthy but don't expect anything more. And it'll be much closer to the 8M mark with the current pricing.

I already thought last week was pretty bad.. really low sales all around for both hardware and software
Fantasy Life is the only interesting release until June. But the 7 months after that will be more interesting.

GTA V was a million seller in Japan so it is pretty big (,just not as much as in the West).

Software and price are very important too. Portability alone isn't a magic fix.

It will get more third party games, but not all of them will be on Switch 2 day 1.

Nintendo Switch is still outselling the competition in Japan. We all know that the NS2 is going to carry the torch for the NS1 and continue to dominate. The only thing that can potentially stand in its way is if Sony releases a HYBRID mainline PlayStation console but we all know how their consumer base feel about that so we know it's never going to happen. Oh well, that's too bad.

Sony would be insane to go with a hybrid approach. They'd be killing their sales all over the world, to what? Sell maybe 10M more units in Japan?

Nintendo has the handheld/hybrid market to themselves. Sony now has the high end home console market to themselves, with the option to use PS Portal. I say they both stick to their strengths.

Yeah it'd help, but like others have been saying, that' s just part of the issue. Ultimately they still need the software to appeal to the market.

Thing is, they DO have a lot of that software...it's just multiplat and on alternate platforms with better value propositions either because the games are a lot cheaper & offer free online alongside higher performance options (PC/Steam), or they have a form factor & lot of exclusive games very popular with the market in addition to the multiplats (Switch/Switch 2).

PS5 is in a weird middle spot that's not appealing enough to either side of that coin, and the drop in hardware & software sales are proving it, at least in Japan.

Strongly doubt GTA6 is gonna boost PS5 weekly sales in Japan to 100K; even Monster Hunter Wilds couldn't manage that (IIRC), and that IP's a lot more popular in Japan than GTA.

Yep and funny thing is we still got people thinking it won't get games like GTA6, when there's no business reason for T2 and R* to not bring the game to Switch 2. And if CDPR can get Cyberpunk on the thing, there's definitely a way to get GTA6 running on Switch 2 even if some visual settings and resolution (at least native) has to get scaled back.

The only question is if GTA6 is Day 1 on Switch 2 or some time afterwards; I'm guessing it'll come after, but before whatever PC version is ready. Then if you just turn attention to Japanese 3P games, I mean it's kind of telling that Nintendo already got an exclusive with From Software and technically a timed exclusive with Square-Enix already, that's probably just the start in addition to them likely getting games like Persona 6 and FF IX Remake Day 1.

Things are about to get really interesting in Japan very quickly and I'm just curious to see how PS5 weathers the storm until SIE have their portable & PS6 (and more importantly, new excluvies in taste with the market) ready. Could be a really rough 3 years for PS over there if I'm being honest.

PS5 hardware was selling decently when the price was better/lower, yes, but the software sales were still pretty shit. And it's really the software sales that matter when talking about priority of 3P support.

PS5 still gets Japanese AAA 3P support because a lot of those games are popular outside Japan where PS5 sales are stronger. But with Switch 2 I really think we're going to see many of those Japanese 3P try getting as many of their AAA on the platform as possible in addition to doing more Day 1 on Steam (for those not already doing such).

They aren't going to abandon PlayStation, but the way things are trending in Japan they 100% aren't going to put all their chips on that bet going forward, even for the AAA releases let alone AA and indie ones which are guaranteed Day 1 (or shortly after) Switch 2 releases in addition to Steam in most cases. And all of that just keeps PS5 sales limping along, because what it really needs most is those types of games as genuine exclusive titles, not just multiplats.

But we're dealing with the same SIE that don't see PC and Steam as competing platforms, apparently, so :/. At least Jim Ryan knew what was up.

How long did it take GTAV to hit 1 mil in Japan? And how much did it do in the launch week?

I'm asking because the game's sold like 150+ million copies so 1 mil in Japan isn't even 1% of its total install base.

PS5 can't even compete with an ancient system that is getting replaced soon (Switch 1). When Switch 2 releases, PS5 is pretty much dead in Japan. No chance it sells more than PS4 lifetime sales in Japan, meaning that it will continue the trend of every new PS generation since PS2 selling less than the previous one in Japan.

The PS5 is probably going to end up as the worst selling home console from Sony ever in Japan.

And to think Sony had the full ability to do as Nintendo did, make a language lock and continue to sell the PS5 at a decent price in Japan. Switch 2 language lock and thus cheaper price is a major reason why PS5 is dead after the Switch 2 releases, because that cheaper Switch 2 price just led demand to skyrocket there, while Sony on the other hand killed most of the demand for PS5 by making several major price hikes on the system in Japan.

I don't think PS5 needs to be saved honestly, PS4 reached 7 million in August 2018 (so after 4.5 years), the PS5 isn't far from it, despite the huge price difference.

Yes, but Sony doesn't care anymore about the Japanese market.

It had crossed it by the end of 2014. Small in the overall sales of GTA lifetime, but big for a PlayStation game in Japan.

The rest of your post makes some great points. The two interesting things about third party Switch 2 games for me is:

1. How good will the Japanese support be? What's been shown so fat has some promise, but still quiet mediocre. It is just the launch period though.

2. How will they sell? A lot of franchises like MGS, FF and Yakuza are heavily tied to PlayStation. It might be a while before they sell better on Switch 2

Weren't the expert saying the same thing about Switch 1? Cyberpunk some would say, but Switch 1 got The Witcher 3. The big issue of PS5 is the price and the fact that it's not a tablet.
