Official Tomb Raider: Anniversary Thread

Who to believe?

From IGN Review of TR: AOD "Too bad the framerate drops at seemingly at random from 30 to 20 FPS with only one person on screen."
Yeah, really, who to believe when it comes to framerate, IGN or Dark10x? :lol

Yes, the game is most definitely running at 60FPS, field rendered with some nice smoothing going on as to avoid interlace flicker. The framerate does drop down every once in a while though, actually the game action slows down, to be more precise.

I'm replaying the first on my PSP. Looks okay. Certainly doesn't look as bad as I remembered...could be because I last played the Saturn version on my HDTV.

Anyway, I am blazing through the first three levels. I've completed them all in under 40 minutes. I just have them memorized, though I did discover that the room with the bridges in the Caves IS open air. I didn't realize that.

Lost Valley still isn't. And the T-rex is much smaller than I remember. Lost Valley is still pretty awesome.

According to CAG, the PS2 version is only $19.99 after 2pm at Best Buy, on the 6th. I really want the PC version but that's too good a deal to pass up!

Never played Legends, I fell off on the franchise since it was apparent each game after 2 was progressively worse than the previous title. I completely lost interest but after the atrocious Angel of Darkness who can blame me.

Waiting on GameTap to release Anniversary and Legends so I can fully appreciate both versions. I dug the demo and they did precisely what I wanted from this product; a re-envisioning of the original with modern level design aesthetics and gameplay considerations. Bravo Crystal D.

EDIT: Coincidentally I'm always finding myself playing Tomb Raider on a PC. Strangely I never touched it for the consoles.

My copy arrived from GAME.co.uk today.

I'm getting pwned by the T-rex, I can't even hurt it =0

You're supposed to, like, lure him onto spikes, but every time I make him angry enough to charge me, I can't dodge his attack. I suck at action games...

No ur not :p I mean he hits the spikes but you don't lure him to them, you have to shoot him in the eye during the dodge sequence so he goes blind and hits the spikes

Oh, I'm aware of that. It's a VERY flawed game. We all have those games, right? You know, the games that really aren't very good yet we still manage to enjoy. I dunno, it just did a lot of things that I liked.

The atmosphere was great, the concepts were solid, the visuals were excellent (and 60 fps), the music was incredible, and the game was interesting throughout. Unfortunately, it just wasn't properly finished. While it actually feels pretty polished on the surface, there are plenty of serious flaws present in the game. It is not a game I would recommend to most people, really. I believe I enjoyed it for the same reason that I enjoyed Primal.

Well, I can totally back that up then as I, too, enjoyed Primal for pretty much the same reasons. Such a fun, quirky, pleasant to look at game.

Is it okay for me to admit that I hated all the PSone Tomb Raider's and basically anything with the TR name up to Legend? Is it ok for me to hate a series of games that much then want to call the two latest editions (one been technically a remake of a game I despised) some of my favortire games ever?

Anyone else in the same boat?

Exactly the same boat. Hi *waves*

Actually, not the exact, I like the first two

Just get it for the PS2. Its not like they improved the visuals on the PC version either...

I don't mind playing on my PS2/PS3, but I did enjoy the HD visuals and achievements in Legend. They were really well-done and I had a lot of fun scouring the levels for hidden items and then rushing through the levels to beat the required times.

I really liked TR1/2, and I really liked Legend so I just wanted some next-gen love.

But thats the thing, this one doesn't have the improved visuals. The "Next Gen" option Legends had for the PC that made the game look like the 360 version doesn't exist on this one, so they didn't redo all the shaders/etc for it. This is obviously not a game for the masses so they probably thought doing it solely for the 360 would be a waste of time, and releasing it like this would probably do more harm then good.

Oh, and you can also search for hidden artifacts and do Time Trials on the PS2 version :p Unless ofcourse, u care about a silly gamescore.

It's completely irrational, but yes, I do care, and it's a big incentive that pushes me forward to complete tasks like that :)

pretty much...they didn't redo the textures, add shaders, or anything like that

its just a solid 60+ fps with AA+AF (and higher resolution)...mind you with a competent system

....I personally, would rather sit confortably on my couch downstairs :)

Thanks for the info....I didn't know this....I just assumed it would use the Legend engine.

oh it uses the engine....just not the distinguishing "next-gen" assets (SM 3.0) they added to the PC and 360 sku...

so its the same "configuration" of the engine that was on Xbox, PS2, and GC

So, did anyone try the PS2 version?

It's available (in Europe at least), saw it in stores today.
I just started playing it. Currently goofing around in the manor. The graphics are a step back compared to Legends on the 360. But I'm liking it! It has that old Tomb Raider vibe nailed down.

How does it look next to those PC shots in this thread?

I picked up the PS2 version this morning. I've played 2 hours so far and completed the first two levels.

The game is a real trip down memory lane. They have really nailed the vibe of the first game.

I haven't played TR1 since 1997, but I was a real TR fanboy and completed TR 1-4.

TR1 was my favourite by a long stretch. So, I'm really enjoying this remake.

The game actually looks and plays just like my rose tinted memories of the original, rather than how it actually was.

Looks great on the PS3 in 480p modes, some nice lightling effects, steady framerate. Graphically not as good looking as I remember Legends, looking but good enough.

They've moved all the secrets, hence the 2 hours to get this far.

I'm not sure how this will play if you are not a fan of the original. A lot of the enjoyment comes from the same old skool gameplay, where the environment is an obstacle course and you have to navigate your way, with very little help.

This is excellent news.

TBH though, I do LOVE the chatter between Zip, Alister, and Lara. They are all really well written characters. I get that some people like the isolation, but I thought the mythological discussions and witty banter between the three of them was just too sweet.

How is Hawes in this game? In Legend she was just fantastic. Spot on in every line.

I just got to the Egypt level, and i had forgotten that i had enabled Depth of Field... god damn i thought i was going blind, seriously, i even tried to clean my eyes :lol

I'm so glad to hear that they haven't turned this one into a hand-holding walk-through. And hopefully, Crystal Dynamics will take what they should have learned from this one and apply the same kind of focus on level design to future games. Combat should never have been a focus of this series.

Also, I <3 atmospheric isolation.

Many screenshots for your viewing. Beautiful. This game is just such a sheer joy to play. Everything is just yours to explore. Like a beautiful puzzle you slowly put together until the pieces make sense and you know where to go. You try and retry until you get it right, you feel like you've accomplished something.

Got the PS2 collector's edition today :D 3 whole discs!

Anyway I have a few gripes...mainly just old man gripes how it differs to the previous games I guess my problem is that because Lara is now so quick and nimble, you can just fly through the game. Took ages to get as far as I am now on the PS1 version, because of the slow speed and because the path wasn't always as obvious.

They've fixed the problems that people had with Legend, it's now in Tombs and has that feeling of isolation....it's just that this new approach by Crystal Dynamics seems odd in the original TR setting.

That seems to be wearing off the fourth I go though. Either I'm getting used to it or the game is sorting itself out. The areas seem to be getting bigger and require more climbing which is slowing it down, which is good.

It's great to have the original enemies back. Im playing it on normal difficulty and they seem to require a few too many bullets, but I prefer angry wolves and bears in Tombs to the armed humans in Legend.

Graphicallyy it looks bad on my HDTV, but great for a PS2 game on a SDTV....the interlacing and flickering on the CRT is irritating though. I'm gonna mess with my HDTV settings later and try to get used to it on there. Also for some reason it isn't displaying in full widescreen on my HDTV, all my other widescreen PS2 games do though :/

It seems like a solid game so far. Don't let my bitching make it sound bad. It's just the way I am v_v

Reviews are looking damn fine. After playing Legends last year on the 360, all it really did was remind me how awesome the first TR was. Legends was okay, and had a boatload of potential, but it didn't feel like a REAL TR at times. It looked like one and played like one to a certain extent, but there was WAY too much hand-holding and prompting, and it was extremely short. The challenge just wasn't there, and there was far too much human killing in it. I am an avid animal lover, but the first TR rocked because it was all about being immersed in a place that was devoid of man. The majority of your enemies were predatory animals in lost ruins. That rocks...because once the series started going human vs. humans with guns, and also the modern-day areas like skyscrapers and whatnot, it grew stale.

I can't wait to get my hands on Anniversary.

Legends came out on GameTap a bit ago, pretty shitty PC performance I'd have to say. Game is good fun, sad my experiences with the last few entires initially deterred me from this gem. Waiting for Anniversary to be released on the service.

Does the same awesome music start at this point, like in the original?

For those who care, Anniversary is now up on Steam. Shame it isn't cheaper, but I guess we are not quite there yet when it comes to digital distribution.

I will say, this game had completely flown under my radar until just a few nights ago when I noticed the demo for the PC version was out. And while the demo isn't perfect, and I expect the game will have the same flaws, I was sold well enough to spend $30 on a well done trip down memory lane!

Needless to say, the game is downloading now.

Impression: Pretty cool! I never played the original, so it's pretty much all new to me. The visuals are great, with only a slight slowdown here and there (likely because 1680x1050 is a lot for my medium-range graphics card). I like how the puzzles are challenging, but not excruciating.

Anyone with the PS2 version care to comment? IGN has reviews up which said the PC graphics are amazing and the PS2 graphics are sad (in SD or HD). That's disappointing, of course, since I can't play the PC version and was hoping TRA in 480p would look quite good on the old PS2.

On the other hand, I'm mostly in this for the gameplay. So how's that? (Without spoilers, por favor.)
