Official Tomb Raider: Anniversary Thread

It's so true. I really like Core but I'm afraid if they had continued, Tomb Raider would be dead and it was almost dead after Angel of Darkness. Crystal Dynamics has done an absolutely wonderful job and Anniversary is leaps and bounds above that of Legends and that's saying a lot as Legends was quite enjoyable. You can really tell they put a lot of heart and dedication into Anniversary. I like the little parts where you think you know what you're doing because you played the original Tomb Raider, but oh no something happens and you don't feel so smug anymore. I absolutely love that.

I really hope this does well for Eidos and Crystal Dynamics. They deserve it.

In the Thor Room, I stepped under the hammer plate ready for it to slowly fall and it
came down fast and smashed me
.

TOUCHE, CRYSTAL DYNAMICS.

Same bloody thing happened to me too! Also in the caves
as you walk over the one bridge it breaks on you. Leaving you at the mercy of the wolves.

Another awesome one. I also love how quickly you get to the "Lost Valley" in the lost valley stage, and how the cogwork is entirely different.

And how they gave Larson a real personality :lol

Also, Hawes rawx, and she better be Lara for a LONG TIME cause they just retconned Tomb Raider 1 to fit into TRL's story. So....it better be her, cause she's perfect.

Roughly how long does it take to finish this game? I started tonight, but I'm playing a few other games too, not sure what to put on the back burner at the moment.

My first TR (not counting ~5 minutes of the original, back in the day), I like it pretty well. I wish I had more context to appreciate it more as a remake, but as my first TR it's good stuff.

Hopefully the 360 Tomb Raider is priced correctly for download. 2400 points = $30US, which is how much Steam is charging for it, and is what the Oblivion expansion cost.

Splitting it up would probably mean each 'bit' would be 500 points, but would also mean there would be a lot of re-copied code, bloating the size of it. Since there appears to be 5 pieces, wouldn't that also mean it would be 1250 Gamerpoints?

Eh, I'd rather they just put it on disc if they're cutting it up like this.

5 pieces = 1000 gamerscore. I think it's obvious why they're doing what they are. It probably won't have next gen graphics or anything and it'll just be a port.

I was able to get TRA (PS2) for $20 at my local Bestbuy tonight. You guys may want to check bestbuy.com for availability in your area :)

BTW, I live in OC,CA.

I got this off of Gametap, IT IS AWESOME!
Too bad I suck a Tomb Raider and I am already stuck near the beggining but this game is damn fun and I will figure it out.
BTW If you have a 360 controller for Windows play it with that, it auto maps all the controls to the same buttons as Legend used on 360 and you can use rumble:D

I spent like 5 hours in Croft Manor thinking it was the first level not realizing I had to create a profile to start the main game.

Croft Manor = Pure Awesome.

I'm at Folley now.

I couldn't find the game at BestBuy :(.
Did you ask an employee? I had to ask and the guy went to the back to get it. Using the website you can see if your local store has the game in stock. It just may not be on the shelf yet when you go to pick it up.

Btw, the graphics in PS2 version (10 minutes or so that I've played) have *exactly* the same quality as the Legends on PS2. I really don't understand comments saying otherwise. It's the exact same engine, even some quirks that I remember from Legends, such as weird progressive scan mode, are here.

Why doesn't the image here in Anniversary fill the entire TV screen? It's as if its bordered all around and doesn't want to take advantage of the full width and height of the screen. Is this normal? Was it like this in Legend?

Even when set to Widescreen mode to ON in the options, the image appears squished within its "boundaries". Progressive Scan enabled doesn't alleviate anything, except making everything look better of course.

If this is normal, it just seems odd to see this game not fill entire the dimensions and ratio of the TV.

Didn't see that resolution option. I'm also using the GameTap version which encrypts the files so I can't exactly poke around in the settings file to see if I can. Glad to know the resolution you're using, I have the exact same TV but haven't attempted to hook up my PC to it yet.

Downloaded the demo off steam to see if I could check that way and woohoo!

Will grab it on steam then and use a PS2 controller :) PC games that support odd resolutions = win! (also I think that showed up on the list because my desktop was set to that, which is how smart games are doing it these days). If you have a decent video card/video-out you should give playing PC stuff on your XBR a shot. Since the PQ is so damn good on the XBR, it's like playing an X360/PS3 game with great AA/AF and 60fps :D

I'm enjoying the game. I played between 2 - 3 hours today on my PS3 and the games looks really good upscaled to 1080i. Quick question. Is it better to set the PS3 upscaling to 'Normal' rather than full, and then set TR: A to Widescreen in the game menu, or vice versa?

Wow this thread blew up while I was off at work. I was just going to pipe in that the PC version is just great great fun. Case in point, I had an unfortunate accident with the profile system and I had to restart from scratch. I was kind of dreading it as I had run the demo section a few times trying to explore every nook and cranny, and then when playing through the game the first time I was doing the same thing. I hadn't made it far, just completed the cog puzzle, but I was kind of dreading having to redo it all again, (especially the cog section as that would be like the 4th or 5th time through there).

Within five minutes of running through the first few sections I hadn't even thought about how I had played this again and was just enjoying the movement of it all. That kind of quick pace ping ponging from ledge to ledge and such. Its just so much fun to send Lara flying through the different rooms even when you know where you should be going. A real credit to CD that they made the movement that enjoyable.

I haven't seen many people comment on the rewards yet though which surprises me as they are really neat. Being able to run through the levels in the original Tomb Raider model is just a hoot. They put a lot of fan service into these and it shows how much they dig the series.

Best $30 I've spent in a long while.

There's no reason not to play on this PC if you've got the right hardware.

I hope so, I know my PC is getting old but I figured I wouldn't have any problem running the demo on it since it's a pretty straight PS2 port.

I was wrong.

3Ghz Intel Celeron D
1 GB PC3200 Ram
6600GT AGP graphics card

Running the game at 1024x768 causes slowdown in some spots.

Set the PS3 to Full and TRA to widescreen if you have a widescreen tv.
In Sony speak, Full = 16:9 & Normal = 4:3

Ok, I have some issues with the PC version (though I might just be missing something)

1. The camera is insane when using a pad with the camera on the right stick. When climbing around on ledges/walls/levers it's always trying to auto-reset the camera position and often keeps bouncing around making jumps harder than they should.

2. Is there an auto-load last checkpoint button? It's great that it checkpoints before big jump sections but if you fall and DON'T die you have to keep re-climbing back up to the checkpoint position since I don't see any way to kill yourself besides climbing high and jumping.

Otherwise it's pretty fun, though the depth of blur is too much IMO. Everything looks too blurry at times and I ended up turning it off.

What pad are you using?
I am using a 360 controller and it works like a charm.
This may end up being one of my favorite games and it wasn't even on my radar till today:D

Yes, that's normal. I just bought Legend for the PS2 recently as a warm-up for TRA (I'd originally played TR:L on the PSP) and it has the same quirky progressive, widescreen mode. Perhaps a concession to keep the framerate high? It certainly doesn't make it look like it's using all 480 lines...

PAL PLAYSTATION 3 + Tomb Raider: Anniversary: set emulation to full, turn 60 Hz on, turn widescreen on, and turn progressive scan off to get a picture that fills the screen.

I still find it a bit too blurry even without smoothing turned on (which makes it a bit too jaggy... Tomb Raider: Legend on Xbox 360 spoiled me :D).

I was replaying all the levels to get 100% and i noticed the first level is labelled "???"

There's a secret level? oO

Also playing the final level, the Lava part, with the Croft Manar outfit = pure ownage. That level is just awesome.

Btw, to those who asked, i finished the game in 13 hours, and thats without doing 100%. But tbh i think it took longer, maybe the counter resets back everytime you load a checkpoint or something.

I'm gonna ask the "how long is this game?" in a different manner. Are the level-layouts exactly the same as the original? Did they take out a few rooms or cut down some level-passages a little bit? Cause one of the characteristics of Tomb Raider are the long and expended-out levels. Some levels later on in the game were freaking huge and took at least a couple of hours to finish. And that's one of my prejudices towards this remake. I'm afraid it has the same formula as Legend, which was easy, ' played-out-for-you' and super-simplified. And the levels were a few corridors where you couldn't get lost. Tomb Raider 1 was the exact opposite. This is what makes me doubt this game.

I made a comparison between the PS2 and PC game (using the PC demo versus the final area on PS2). They look virtually the same outside of resolution. The PS2 image quality really isn't half bad either. Anyone suggesting that there is a world of difference between the two is simply wrong.

Now, I would generally prefer the higher resolution version with a higher framerate...but I could not pull off the controls to my liking on the PC. The right stick camera is way too fast and something else just feels "off" even when using a 360 wireless pad.

The game is really fun, though. I must admit, in some ways, I do miss the slower paced gameplay as it really made it feel as if you were a real person exploring these ruins. The atmopshere is also a whole lot cheerier with bright lights and bloom all over the place. The original felt dark and creepy at times in comparison (and I've recently replayed portions of the original in preparation for this game so my memory is accurate).

Of course, this is really a new vision of the game and, as such, I'm quite enjoying what they've done with it.

They feel pretty different, but seem to be similar in terms of size. The game is MUCH faster, however, so you'll find yourself plowing through rooms at a quicker pace. The original game is a much slower affair which, as I noted above, has its own charms. When you stumble upon an area in the original, you would expect to spend quite a bit of time working through it.

Well, i've been doing a couple of Time Trials and you can end levels in a matter of minutes. But before i did the trials i had a couple of levels that took me more then 1 hour. The longest one took me 1h51. I do believe the amount of rooms are exactly the same as TR1, they're just played differently.

Wow this is what i call a remake!! I bow down before Crystal Dynamics. I did the first level yesterday evening and WOW --- this game will step over a good part of my backlog.

Try doing speed runs on the original. I think I finished the first level in just under 3 minutes. The record I've seen is like 2:43, which is incredibly fast. Shaving those last few seconds off is very, very hard.

I downloaded the steam demo the other day and my old rig was running it around 30-20fps with DoF off and at 800x600, looked realy nice even at that detail and the demo was quite fun.

Apparently, there are a few levels that the art department made to test their skills. You can run around in them but they are mostly just there for show.

I would really love to go home and play some more. i got cheated out of time with this game last night and was stuck trying to sneak a few hours in this morning. It looks really blury on the ps3 but the controls are tight.

The Croft Manor is so damn fun. I didn't realize CD turned it into one big Metroid Prime-esque level. Finding all your items and being able to access new areas. I'm glad I got the maze map for the outside! :lol

I've spent most of my time messing around in the Manor so far, and will get onto the main game soon enough. I'll love using the grapple hook to wall run, so cool. Is this in Legend too? I'm gonna have to pick up Legend on X360 after I finish this!

If the X360 version is true, I'll probably buy this game again. I know I'll want to play through it at least one more time, but playing it on PS2 everything is a little washed out and blurry. I need me some hi res lovin.

This game wasn't even on my radar, but I loved the original TR. Glad to hear Anniversary is good. I'm definitely picking it up after work. It's tempting to leave early...

I do agree with dark10x in that the PC version feels rather wonky when played with a controller. I imagine the PS2 version feels more natural.

Game's real good however. I'll probably get the PS2 version later for cheap. Love doing 100ft swan dives off of cliffs into water.

The PC version is awesome. AA, 60fps, high resolution... this is the first time I'll pick the PC version of a game that is on console.

Yeah, I actually found it more playable on a keyboard.

Which kind of makes sense because I played the original TR on a PC when it came out.

The only thing I don't like about the keyboard controls is that gun-lock is set to "G", which is ridiculous. I need to change it to something. Maybe l-shift.

There is ONE section in the coliseum that made me want to pull my hair out. It was camera related. But otherwise nice.

Oh man, saw how the PS2 controls are setup and set the PC one w/PS2 controller that way and the game plays awesome now.

Played through the first two levels during lunch and they were as good as I'd remembered. So much platforming fun. We need more games about climbing things quickly.

It's also interesting to see how SoTC was clearly inspired by TR in it's climbing mechanics. Feels almost identical.

Oh and for those of you like Mr. Bob who didn't play Legends. Legends plays EXACTLY like this. Total fun, fast and made of win. Imagine playing TRA but with graphics as good as Gears of War at times and two horrible vehicle filler levels thrown in to expand what is otherwise a fairly short game and you have TRL on X360.

Yeah pretty much, tried it out with the wireless controller and its pure sex. You'd be an idiot to not be able to spot the nice improvement 1600 with 4x AA gives you. My friend took advantage of the Best Buy deal and it looked pretty good for a PS2 title, I was impressed to be honest Still I prefer the PC version, its smoother and just plays better (of course with the right hardware).

EDIT: I got farther into the game and I'm loving the level redesigns. The animation is a bit wonky (like the IK when you pull on a box) but overall fantastic stuff. I wish the Legends engine was as clean and efficient as this one. The team really knocked it out of the park for the multiplatform release it seems.

I can't find the game anywhere. Ofcourse I haven't driven to the next town over where the Best Buys and Circuit Citys are located but still-why the heck can't I buy this at my local BlockBuster or WalMart? I'm layed up with a bad back so I really don't wanna drive to the next town and have to fight store crowds of those sizes:(

When was this game released? Maybe its still pretty much a shipping issue for some of these stores I dunno.

It has to be a shipping issue. The game is available a 6 different Best Buys in the Miami area and we're high traffic.
