Official US/JP PLAYSTATION 3 Launch Thread

To anyone still looking for a PS3, you might want to check Best Buy. I walked in there on a whim about an hour ago and jokingly asked an employee if they had any PS3's. He said, "you want one? 20 or 60". I said 60 and he disappeared into the back. Came back a few minutes later and motioned me to the register. A girl there told me they only had 20 gig units and I took it. She wrapped the entire box in black plastic and told me to pull my car to the front and said "Do not get out of your car sir." A minute later an employee walked out, I popped the trunk and drove off with a new console.

Anyway, they said that they will be getting random deliveries and that they are only giving them to people who ask for them. So it is worth a shot.

Good luck.

Ok, I'm worried. I just went to update the system .. it updated to like 50% .. then it prompted me to press 'X' to install the update .. I think it warned me that my screen would go blank ... my screen is blank now and NOTHING is happening. It's been blank for like almost 5 minutes now. Is this normal?

WTF just happened?! My screen is still blank! And my green light is still on ... wtf .... ugh. Should I turn it off and back on? It didnt' look like the update completed. I don't want to brick this thing.

that does not sound good :(

yes! I went to go get some food while the F1 demo was downloading (wired doesn't really seem any faster) and when I got back my HDMI cable was waiting in my mailbox! gonna go hook this mother up the way kutargai intended :D

Looks like my PS3 is totally ****ing bricked. It won't even shut down when I go to power it off. I ****ing did nothing wrong during the update. Didn't cancel, didn't shut it off. Didn't DO SHIT. ****!!!

The manual states that during an update the power button on the front is inactive. During the update I didn't even touch the ****ing controller. I only used it when asked. I pressed 'X' after about 50%, 'cause it asked me to complete the update or some shit. Now it looks like the system is stuck in ****ing limbo.

Anyone have any ideas about what I might be able to do?

I should've sold this mother****er.

Walked into an empty ( customer-wise) Gamestop store this morning picked up my Ps3 and Resistance and came straight to work I got a 9 hour shift ahead of me. Long ass day FTL.

Damn that sucks.

I finally saw the video of the Wal-Mart "Running of the Campers" where the kid hits his head on a pole. It's just....:lol I would play through Gundam to be able to represent that kid in a negligence suit against wal-mart.

It seems like you have ****ed the console with the firmware update.
OUCH! :( Call Sony.

Here in L.A., the launch at the Topanga Sony Style store resulted in a mob scene: About 200 people tried to cut the line and storm the mall, completely overwhelming mall security. A fleet of 10 police cruisers descended on the scene and police choppers got called in, with a total of four choppers circling overhead. They then set up a staging area outside the mall and descended on the entrance commando-style to disperse the crowd.

The store ended up not getting their shipment, and only having 13 units for sale. The recipients where hussled out a back mall entrance to avoid the mob.

Crazy.

Umm .. ok ... that was SO WEIRD.

Yay for Sony Support. For some reason my system screen just went blank ... so I had to shut it down .. hold the power button for five seconds and reboot it using composite. When I rebooted I got a screen asking me to update the new software. I had already successfully set the system resolution to 720p before starting the update. Looks like disaster has been averted.

Maybe your tv lost the console while the screen went blank ? Try changing the channel or disconnect the AV-cable(s).
Don't disconnect the power unless you can shut it down using the power on/of button. But keep in mind you need to hold it down for a few seconds.

edit: Seems you already got the "problem" solved. And it's more or less what I thought and suggested.

That's good.

To try and minimise firmware-updating risk, can you update from the game discs? To do that, would you just try to play a game and it'll automatically update off the disc first before playing? I don't know if I want to risk my connection crapping out midway through an update or something :/

You can also download the update file with a PC and put it on a stick or even a cd / dvd from what I read the past days.

Can't you just plug your camera with the USB cable that came with the machine? I did plug my camera and was able to access all the pictures.

why did they add the memory card slots if i have to do this with my sony memory camera and sony memory stick?

Can someone else try to format a 1gig+ memory stick pro in the xmb, it errors out for me everytime.

i dont think that willl harm anything, it downloads first the files and stores them i think , and afterwards it says that he will start to install the firmware. so worst case when your connection craps out, it will just disconnect and you have to start over

I guess!

Installation starts after download :D
It would be crazy to do a firmware update through a streaming.

sounds like a drug deal. :lol

so is it true that it won't display 1080i.

MY PS3 is distorting time and space! The color spectrum is turning to ROYGBIV right before my very eyes!!

My haul!

I've got a game of Conversion set up in Resistance if anyone cares for a quick match or two. The room name is (surprise) BuddyC.

Why did you buy Red Steel and CoD3 Wii.... :(

Red Steel because I'm a moron and CoD3 because I wanted a shooter on Wii that wasn't ass.

Still have to pick up Zelda. I always get ****ed by Launch Frenzy. :( I bought so much shit for DC launch.

Red Steel for Wii makes sense but choosing CoD3 Wii over the PS3 version????

I'd get the 360 version, but if I was going to play "yet another wwII shooter," I wanted to do it quirkily!

it is still in the trunk of my car. wrapped in it's black celophane cocoon. i just read that it only comes with composite cables so it looks like i will have to make a run to frys when i leave work.

i have a 1080p set so i will let you know when i get it hooked up if it runs in 1080p or not. the damn thing better for that price.

Motorstorm demo is taking ages to DL.

I'm also feeling some buyer's remorse right now. Resistance is cool but so far I'm not seeing anything that was worth $600, especially if you already have a 360.

do you mean internet connection?

any automatic procedure to upgrade a firmware should work in a way that first the upgrade file is fully downloaded to a local memory and then, when the file integrity has been checked, the actual writing to the flash starts

there's no way you can brick the console if your connection drops while downloading the upgrade file, vice versa the programmer that did that upgrader should be fired

:)

I'm really 50-50 on whether I should open this box. If Resistance were on the 360, I highly doubt if I would even buy it. I haven't even played CoD 2 yet and it's only $40.

Blast Factor impressions GET.

Well, this thing is a Geometry Wars ripoff total, more so than the previews led me to believe. Having said that, it's a pretty fun game.

Each level is basically an infection, and you have to rid the level of viruses and the like. Notice I said level; the game moves from level to level, as opposed to Geometry Wars's continued swarm of enemys.

Controls are the same as GW, with a few additions. Tilt the controller left or right and all the enemies fall to that side of the screen. Very useful, unless there are enemies to the left of you and you tilt right. Then you ram them right into you, killing you. The trigger is some sort of enemy repellent that slows down time as well. I don't see any indiciator for how many you have, so I think it's just a recharging ability.

Enemies are standard GW fare at the beginning, dumbly moving towards you in swarms. Later enemies require unique strategies to beat. One requires you to use the tilt controller to flip them over before you can shoot them. Another requires you to use the trigger to slow down time and spin them around. This exposes their rear weak point which you can exploit for massive damage.

The game branches depending on your performance. So if you do well, you go to a harder level next. If you don't, you go to an easier one. Either way, both paths lead to a boss fight at the end.

The game has leaderboards as well, just like GW. You can sort by all or just your Friends list.

Overall, I rate this 4 giant crabs out of 5, and I think it was worth the 7.99 I paid for it.
