Official US/JP PLAYSTATION 3 Launch Thread

Just to be clear..if I buy a Japanese PS3 will it play all of the US games with no problems?

yes, all ps3 games are region free. Only blu-ray movies are region locked, but the US and JPN share the same region, so you'll be fine there too.

Awesome..thanks a lot man..I'm gonna be buying a Japanese PS3 if I can't find one before I get paid.

Ok looks like this PS3 is working fine. Yay!
I've played a bit with the playstation store. The US one accepted my french credit card fine, but the japanese one refused it. Too bad for Lemmings :(

You're really the only person I know to have gotten a broken PS3! I hope this one lasts many years!

Actually I'm not. One other guy here had the exact same problem as me, and had some overheating issues too.
It's very rare though, that's for sure. As always it had to happen to me, that's just the natural way of life for me and new electronics stuf. The more expensive they are, the rarer defective units are, the more chance I have to get a broken unit. Verified countless times.

I was wondering what that link is for finding out if there are problems with the games running on BC. I wanna check my games to make sure they'll work.

Two more questions about the Japanese PS3:

- Does Resistance (JP) have English texts as an option?
- Is Motorstorm still coming out in a week?

Motorstorm got delayed a week in JP. 14th now I think.

Resistance is the US version if you have your system language set to English on the XMB.

NOTE THAT IF YOU BUY A JPN PS3 RESISTANCE (JPN/US version regardless) WILL BE CENSORED (no blood, no "hero scenes") AS THE GAME DETECTS YOUR HARDWARE AND TURNS OFF THE BLOOD/ETC.. IF IT'S JPN HARDWARE. THIS BRINGS THE FEAR THAT FUTURE GAMES LIKE GOD OF WAR/ETC... WILL DO THE SAME AND JPN LIKES TO CENSOR US GAMES TO HELL AND BACK (and Capcom JPN games like RE4/Dead Rising). THUS I ADVISE AGAINST A JPN PS3 SINCE US PS3 WILL ALWAYS PLAY JPN GAMES AND NO FEAR OF CENSORSHIP.

Hmm... interesting. That's bizarre actually. If only US PS3s were as easy to come by as Japanese ones, which seem to be dropping in price recently... This might be a deal breaker. What are "hero scenes" btw?

Not sure actually. I think they are something like a cutscene when you walk into certain rooms where a monster is going to kill a friendly soldier and if you save him he joins you. In the JPN one you'll just walk into the room and see the enemy + guy and if you save him he'll join you...aka, no cutscene. I have a JPN system though so this is just going from what others have told me.

That being said, even without the blood/hero scenes, myself, DCharlie, Thetrin, and a few others absolutely loved Resistance and I don't feel the lack of red splats detracted from the game at all (since you're fighting monsters, not people). But....I do worry that some future games like RE titles will be missing headshots and things actually important :\

Kinda off topic, but the Resistance thing has me curious, when did the Japanese game ratings boards (or whatever governing body) become such tight asses with the censorship and stuff? Is this fairly recent? IIRC localization was sorta the other way around in the 8-bit/16-bit era (certain Japanese games getting tamed down for NA release). Odd how it's flipped.

Just a general PS3 'tard question. How much tardier is it actually? Is the memory stick/SD card slots and Wi-Fi all that it's missing (and 20GB HDD that you can easily upgrade anyway)? That doesn't sound like a lot to miss to me.

Realistically, there is no tarded pack for PS3. Both units are fully functional out of the box.

However, I would say you'd probably get a lot more out of the 60GB unit if you have a PSP.

thats really annoying (as I have a Japanese unit). Japanese software I can understand, but US version too!?

this better not become a trend.

Got to play some more with the PS3, looks like this one is stable for sure :)
Anyway, I'm heading out to buy a longer USB cable, I simply can't use the wireless pad where I live, too much 2.4g noise I guess. Played 4 races of RR7, got 3 bluetooth resyncs in that time. I knew bluetooth was a bad idea for a game controller, but I didn't realize it would be that bad. And before people say it's my sixaxis, I've tried with both my controllers and it also happened with the other defective PS3. Ho well at least it's an average USB cable so it's cheap.

No wi-fi makes it a dud for me.

MK2 had green blood in Japan. That's just one I remember off the top of my head. PEACE.

I haven't had any bluetooth issues since I switched the wireless channel on my WiFi router from 6 to 7. Works flawlessly for me now... Good luck troubleshooting your setups guys!!

I can't use the text entry on the web browser without crashing my console. W.T.F?

Heh, my PS3 occasionally freezes when I use the text input function. Happened the first time I used the console and a couple of times since. Had to do a hard reset each time to restore functionality.

.k

The problem is that I have 8 wifi networks around me, 6 of them with very good power. Can't do anything about these. And we shouldn't be expected to do anything about it in the first place anyway.

There's no cutscene in the US version either. Once averted from certain doom, they just start fighting alongside you ...though watching them get slaughered can be pretty entertaining. There's some grisly stuff there though, and I could see the some of the gorier ones getting cut for the JP version.

Downloading speeds seems fine on my wifi... Linksys WRT54G w/ HyperWRT firmware. WPA-PSK security.

They really have to implement background downloading though... and dl queues.

How many people are importing MotorStorm...and if you do..will you be buying the US version as well?
Not so sure about Motostorm, but I really am thinking about importing Armored Core 4. I hope some type of english subtitles or english voice-overs exist on the disc though.

I thought I would hate that decision, and I kind of do, but thankfully the 360 version will also be there in case Capcom does tie the game's violence level to the system's region and not the software's region on PS3.

Same for me, happened once in the web browser (haven't tried again since), and a few times writing a mail to a friend. From the top of my head always when trying to go to that right part of the input box, with all those prediction thingies.
Seems like a common thing then, I hope we'll get a fix quite soon, I'm not too fond of those freezes.

Well yeah. I'm planning on getting RE5 for X360 regardless due to rumble. But I'm thinking more of RE6+ if the series ends up PS3 exclusive.

Boy, the PlayStation Store really sucks. It takes forever to navigate the damn thing and downloading demos is a pain in the ass. I was hoping they would have just ripped off Xbox Live.

Now this doesn't help if DMC4 gets censored. ;_;

DMC has never been censored in Japan before though. It's not a very violent game. You beat-up doll things and orbs come out :P

It's not funny. The ****ing machine can render graphics-intensive next-gen games like Motorstorm without breaking a sweat but it can't register text! Is this something that'll need 'fixing' or should I just wait for a firmware patch?

Dude the PS store moves super fast. What are you talking about?

Considering that I just moved about 30 GB of music to my PS3, I am really hoping for the custom soundtracks to be implemented on the very first major revision.

Since the official RR7 thread is a bit buried, I'll post this here:

I'm love-love-LOVING RR7. The controls clicked in my head last night, so I've been playing it like crazy since then.

Ended up playing RR7 more than Zelda this weekend. Shhhhh!

The thing moving slow is what I'm talking about.

It took a good 45 minutes to download the F1 demo. Navigating the thing sucks, too.
