Official US/JP PLAYSTATION 3 Launch Thread

The PSP's 3.00 update will be released by the end of November which will include some of its PS3 to PSP functions as well as the Playstation Store.
Looking forward to this update!

I'm not understanding why anyone would want a VGA cable for PlayStation 3, when HDMI offers superior picture quality output. I mean, if your PC monitor has a DVI input, wouldn't it be obvious to want to buy an HDMI-to-DVI cable or connector? Why would you want to use the analog (inferior) VGA input?

Anyway, 8 more days until launch.

I played Motorstorm today, but since my experience wasn't very good I won't waste the time writing any long impressions just to get flamed for it. It played like any other racing game really. I thought it felt like it didn't know if was a sim racer or an arcade racer ... the controls were more like a sim but the stage I played was very arcade like.

I spent most of my time watching some kid play because I wanted to take in the graphics. Anyone who post any of the official screenshots and tries to claim this is what the game looks like needs kick in the balls. There are a lot of graphical flaws that prevents this game from looking like the trailer. There were a lot of low res textures that weren't seamed very well, especially on the walls; shadows were low res giving it that jagged look like in many Gamecube games; spectaters and other scenary are just flat images, there were LOD glitches in the environment and even on the bike (a part of the rider's uniform would disappear and reappear).

The kid I watched play really sucked, so he was blowing up every few seconds. So I got a good look at the crash physics ... which also disappointed me. The debre from the vehicle was just a particle array that vanished after a second. At first it looked like it was really parts from the machine, but then I started notice parts coming off the were still attached to the bike. After the 50th crash you also noticed the animation of the rider during the crashes are mostly the same, regardless of what you hit. There were two times were the kid's bike would explode and there was nothing near him and another time where he hit a wall doing maybe 5 mph and still blew-up like he was going full speed.

I'll admit that I didn't play the game enough to make a concrete judgement on the gameplay. In terms of scope and detail, graphically the game falls well short of the expectations created by the E3 trailer.

While I disagree with the poster's conclusions for the most part, I was also underwhelmed by Motorstorm, TBH.

1) The monitor at target better be calibrated like crap, because it just looked bad. Fuzziness, contrast, color palette all looked off and the game looked weaker for it.

2) Watching it in motion and playing it, I'm hoping it's an older build. The terrain looked "flat" as opposed to looking 3d, and the two camera settings were all I could switch between. The "real close to first person" camera was waaay too zoomed in as opposed to being a true first person mode with some ability to see a good amount of the course. As has been mentioned multiple times, it just wasn't that exciting from the tracks they have available. Pretty much standard racing fare, and it didn't really show off the deformable terrain or incredible physics on first play. Perhaps with continued play, that aspect of the game will become more impactful, but for a person playing for the first time, you don't really notice it.

I do still think the animations and many of the graphical details such as lighting, the mud on the tires, the vehicle models and textures are still top notch, but I think unreasonable expectations keep biting me in the ass, both for the PS3 and the 360. I'd say it's still better looking than all but the absolute top 360 titles (say Gears of War & Lost Planet of playable titles), but at the present time it's not the OMFG title I thought it would be.

I'd love to play this on a properly calibrated set to see if that affects my first impressions.

Another case of kiosks being hooked to monitors via Composite cabling perhaps?
Dont think so, the monitor switched to 720p when i started the game. The thing about the game is, the kiosk controller is so close to the wall that your face is slammed against the screen like 5 inches away. If you watch somebody else play from about 1-2 feet away it looks freaking amazing imo. You would never play that close to the screen in real gaming conditions unless you dont want to keep your vision.

Alrighty then there's a shopping center 5 min from me that has a Best Buy and a Target, I'm gonna head over there at lunch time and see what's up.

good luck, im gonna check out best buy later today. If they have a ps3, hopefully they have a better kiosk, I didnt get a good feel for the controller's weight because it was tied down and the screen 2 inches in front of my face didnt help either.

I certainly agree with that. It's a horrible setup to be that close to the screen.

I've been calling around to fiure out where to camp, and it's looking pretty bleak-- the stores that I though might not get unreasonable lines are only getting a few units. I'll have to see if the lines are reasonable on Thursday about 3 PM, but I'm figuring I may be out of luck for camping.

Anybody heard anything about either official waiting lists, or second waves shipping?

The Launch Party for the PS3 was last night in Hollywood. Guess who was there?

The last time I was at this particular Best Buy which was about 2 weeks ago they didn't have a kiosk but they DID have a section cleared and this big PS3 ad carboard PS3 is coming thing in the cleared section. I'd expect by now that they have a kiosk up and running... we'll see.

Paris Hilton is a filthy traitor!

EDIT:

Oh my everyone should go look at the pictures. Meagan Good is looking pretty tasty... Vida was there(fully dressed unfortunately) a few other recognizable faces as well.. Curtis from 24.... waaay too many Paris Hilton photos.

My job is NOT the Secretary of Sony Defense.

No, you're just the psychological warfare officer. ;)

But I see what you're doing here. Motorstorm is meh. Bad TV. Then PS3 comes out, Motorstorm is sex with teh Jesus!

Which I believe it will be. This better be the highest scoring game of PS3 launch because it's the game I want most.

It definetly won't be the highest scoring PS3 launch title.
Because its not even a launch title in any territory except possibly Europe in March.

Well, first of all, totally agree about the feeling of PS2 being here forever. I can´t believe PS3 is going to appear tomorrow.

I have mixed feelings for this launchment. For one side I´m excited, it seems I will get a japanese 60Gb PS3 system and given how hard is getting one and all this crap of SCEE and imports, I feel that is like a achivement for itself (I foresee the possibility of not getting it because is going to be a mesh, but my contact seems pretty confident about it).

Then, I love my initial game (Ridge Racer 7) mostly because I avoided Ridge Racer 6 once I knew there was going to be a PS3 RR for launch (is like a tradition). So it will be mostly a new experience.

But I miss the variety of PS2 launch (that I completely missed, I bought an european PS2 some months after launchment in Europe, so lots of time since the japanese launch). Maybe the games were not great, but if I had bought it at launch, I am pretty sure I would have enjoyed Ridge Racer, The Bouncer and some crazy game. When PS2 launched, all were new games, but PS3 has less titles and some of them are multiplatform, which put me down for some reason. I would have liked a crazier launch line (PS3 launch seems too "focused").

Overall, I´m really excited, if all goes right, I will have a new system in 1 week (and I will playing Gears of War while I wait ;) ). So that is reason enough to celebrate for me.

:( When is this game coming out again?

Yeah, the PS2 launch even had at least one RPG option - Summoner - at least I think it was launch, it was at least within a month of launch I think. Sure, it wasn't any kind of GOTG, GOTY, or even GOTM, but for a launch title I had alot of fun with it.

COD3 is already for sale?, interesting. Thats a few days before the street date iirc.

Trust me. I have an ISF-calibrated Sony XBR 960 and the HD streams of the latest build off my 360 look fantastic. The Target demo is probably an old build playing on a shitty set-up. I have no doubts this game will floor people. The framerate in the new vids looks very solid as well.

Sorry misquoted someone...

Anyway yea IGN reports that people aren't lining up for PS3 in Japan because they either get turned away or they realize that most stores are doing lotteries so its pointless to stand in lines.

lol JJConrad states he doesn't want to waste time giving impressions and then gives a long drawn impression of him watching someone else playing the game
You consider that long? Have you seen some of my other posts?

I knew that given any bad impressions would just get me flamed. And that the more I wrote the more people would take out of context and use against me (BobTheFork did it 3 times). I didn't expect to get a tag for my honest opinion, but I guess I should have known better. I thought that I'd have been around this place long enough for people to see my posts are generally unbias and level-headed and not to call me a viral marketer.

So your calling the official screenshots bullshots?
Yes, maybe not as bad a Ubisoft's bullshots, but still bullshots.

Watching it in motion and playing it, I'm hoping it's an older build. The terrain looked "flat" as opposed to looking 3d, and the two camera settings were all I could switch between. That probably a better way to explain it that just saying "low res textures." What turned me off the ground and walls was that compared to the detail of everything else on screen those were the least detailed and blurry. The vehicles, the background, even the bushes all look good, making the dirt look poor in comparison. You would then approach a ramp which would then have more detail to it and then go back to the flat dirt. Considered all the hype surrounding this game has been on the terrain effects and physics, the demo was very underwhelming.

Wandered around Yodobashi Camera up here in Sendai this evening, and not a soul was lined up for the PS3...actually, there is still no poster, display, or anything indicating the launch is imminent here. Kind of sad, but it raises my hopes of getting a unit without spending all night in the freezing temps.

Oh, and I finally got a price out of the clerks, 49900 yen for the 20GB and 62000 for the 60GB. Could be worse. They did say that instead of about 100 units (which I was told a few weeks ago) they are now getting "somewhat less than 100." Silly clerks.

Yodobashi opens at 8 a.m., I need to be on a bullet train to work by 9:02...hope there's no time-consuming lottery nonsense going on.

I begin to really wonder if Sony might be really doomed... at the same time, hyping 80k-100k PS3, kind of pointless.

No go in my area, the Best Buy still has the area cleared but no Kiosk. For the Wii they have an endcap enclosed Wii with a promo video running on the monitor above it.

The Target is selling wii accessories, and has cleared sections but that's it.

odd, you would expect the kiosks to be out in full effect. I mean my target isnt even all that big compared to some other shopping areas around here. I kinda find it funny target is getting them before everybody else, not even the gamestores have them. I expect by monday there should be much more setup.

Anyways, now for some interesting quotes from Phil...
http://threespeech.com/blog/
But look as PS3 launching in America with Resistance, Genji, NBA in full HD and Motortorm. Plus an F1 demo available day one as a download and retail games coming out very shortly after the launch. That’s a pretty compelling line-up.”
Odd he would say motorstorm when it's not a launch title, maybe it will come sooner than expected, january? F1 demo on day one as well? :)

They ask what kind of deals are being lined up with music and video providers for the PlayStation Store…

“One of the strongest attributes of the PlayStation Store is that it is an open environment. It’s interesting that you ask what ‘deals’ we are doing. We want other companies to provide their own content on the store through our commerce mechanism. Day one is clearly going to be more game-centric, but over time that will expand to music, film, television. Any digital content can be distributed this way. “
Hopefully sooner than later.

I've been wondering that as well. Have we ever gotten a launch demo kiosk playing a game you can't buy yet? Seems strange when the job of the kiosk is two part. Sell the system and sell the game inside the system. (Worked spectacularly for COD 2 last year and Fight Night earlier this year)

Not sure but didnt the fight night demo come out before the game shipped? I think he may of just confused his words. Maybe he meant motorstorm demo on day one or something. But I really think we might get motorstorm in the US sooner than expected (sooner than march 07 i mean).

who knows. its a very confusing quote.
but an F1 demo on day one will definately be nice.

Selling the system may be helped by giving potential buyers hands-on time with what's coming.

The decesion to use Motorstorm as the launch demo was probably made before the game was delayed. It's still a good choice for a demo as its one of their flagship exclusive games for the system, it's easy to pick-up-and-play and has a broader appeal than something like Resistance or Genji would have.

Few things I have to bolt. The lack of dmeo I think is because most people wont be able to paly the s3 at LAunch. Thats hwy i think the marketing is so slim. They will pick it up just after launch for the 2nd shipment.

Also those 2.5 sata drive? wow expensive. The cheapest i found was a WD 60 gig for...99.99 lol There goews my core pack savings. I did see a 160 gig for 150 dollars on sale, but I can't bust out 150 after ALL the stuff i bought for the ps3. Ill start checking online. Oh and NONE of the drives i saw were 7200, only 5400 which would make the good ones even more : (

Make this world a better place, punch a Sony troll in the face!
