Its probably just like the PSP. When you check your saves a background image for the game pops up. Some games also have music to go with them.

I know this is different, but I thought it didn't scale, it outputed set resolution.
Eh, it should output the scaled image, like the Xbox 360. Developers aren't going to code for rendering every resolution (which would be hard, made near-impossible by the fact that the PS3 outputs 1080p).

I can confirm this.

I can also say that, at least on the debug I used, the XMB background got darker the later it got in the day, which I thought was a cool touch.

Don't you just set the resolution in the XMB (once) and thats that - the PS3 will scale everything to that resolution ?

Indeed...well PS3 games and BD movies, that is. I don't understand what's Vincey's problem really.

Well it wont scale dvd's or ps1/2 games. I know this is different, but I thought it didn't scale, it outputed set resolution.

Well that should be easy to check, put the ps3 in 1o8oi and play it... what happens?
Resistance specifically pops up a message saying...don't play in 1080i, and proceeds on switching the resolution to 480p :(

Some have little videos too, like RR7

I remember something like that. Its brighter closer to noon, and darker closer to midnight, correct? :)

I dont get why PS3 doesn't have custom backgrounds right now. Obviously it'll be in one of the firmware upgrades but wtf. Are they holding back features just in case PS3 gets cracked?

"The maximum display resolution is currently set to 1080i. For highest image quality 720p is recommended. To change this setting, you must exit the application and change your Video Output Settings from the Display Settings option in the Settings menu.

Press the START button to continue" to 480p :(

??

so uh, what about people with 1080i-only TV's? They have to play in 480p?

Yep. It does a cool sunset thing, where your screen gradually gets black from the top over the hours until the last bit of color dissapears through the bottom of the screen.

Uh, I think you're supposed to choose the first one. Cause I never got that screen (the one with the two entry fields).

You should probably pick the first option as that's for creating a Master Account, and the second is for a Sub Account. Looks like it doesn't let you create a sub account unless a master one exists first.

Only thing I noticed is 7.1 not possible through optical out? I'm not sure if that's right.

I copy and pasted the audio output directly from the Online User Manual so ya, I can't confirm otherwise, you're in a better position than me :P

And thanks to everybody for the kind comments, some of the information was surprisingly difficult to find.

On the most basic level you’re talking about map makers, but how far could user-created content go with PS3?

“Well, I have to be really careful not to give the game away because we’re keeping this secret, but don’t think about it in terms of maps, think of it in terms of behaviours, environments, physics, rules… all the tools that you could want, but in a very consumer friendly way.”

Would you create this content using the pad, or a mouse and keyboard?

“The vast majority of the experience could be done with the pad, but for the small investment of plugging in a USB mouse there might be a second level, or a deeper level of finesse, that you could get in terms of pixel manipulation and paint programs or fine tuning things. Different users will have different wants; some will go all the way down to buying the special software that allows them to create their super levels. 95% of users are happy to be the consumer, but 5% are incredibly fanatical about creating a huge amount of content and the whole community benefits from it, and that is a really interesting trend. Look at Second Life. Everything about the experience is user-created content. That is a very, very powerful metaphor for where we’re going. We’ve got two things in development. One in this building and one with an external developer that, when we do share them with you, I think you’re going to go ‘Ah now I know what he was talking about.’”

Hell yes, this is what I've been waiting for. User created content in games

Could that external developer be Epic? IIRC they showed interest in user created content on PS3.

That's what I noticed, yes. By the way, since you're here, my Resistance review is slated for tomorrow.

Bebpo, how much did you pay for your PS3 from NSX? I thought I'd wait for a local release PAL but if the machines are region free.....

MINE~!

one again. (damn this is a neverending signup)

From the top:

Country (Japan)
Postcode - if you input a Jpn postcode, the button next to it will autofill the rest of the address form for you.
Prefecture - Select a prefecture (Tokyo, Osaka, Aichi, etc) from the dropdown list.
Ward/City (I think. Don't remember. Picture is also too blurry to tell)
Street Address 1
Street Address 2
Apartment/House number/etc.

FWIW you can just insert garbage into the fields here. Doesn't affect anything...

.k

I already tested an usb wifi adapter. doesnt work (if thats what you ask)

anyway, looks like people outside of japan cant register anyway, I received a visa registratrion page.. so , i cant finish registration anyway. bummer

Why would you have 1080i as an option if it won't be used. Its more or less the PS3 giving you a suggestion as far as what it suggest the best selection would be.

Is it just me or is there no...sound when in the menus or in the shop or doing anything on XMB?

Feels sorta wierd...like total silence.

PSP has keytones, but it something you can turn on and off in the system sound settings menu. Maybe you can do the same with the PS3 and it's off by default?

Does anyone know when Best Buy will get Resistance in? Says it'll come in the 18th.. I want to use the $5 off coupon and buy it there and not buy it on launch day when I get my console at Target

I played the PS3 at Best Buy yesterday. They had some basketball game in it. I was pretty impressed for a person who probably hasn't played a b-ball game since the days of 2-D.

Of course that says something right there.
