Official US/JP PLAYSTATION 3 Launch Thread

Tested a PS2 game (Outrun 2006), still has underscan issues on the HDTV unsurprisingly but otherwise works very well. Looks and plays identical to PS2, may load a bit faster.

Okay, it's morning and my son is watching a video on the PS3, so I am taking a break.

Some impressions.

One, the Bond movie was worth waiting to fire up the PS3, but that's more a compliment to Bond than a slam on the PS3. :)

General

- I knew the XMB was PSP like from the pics, but it was still a heavy Deju Vu feeling using it.
- Had to play with video settings a little to get what I wanted. Annoyingly (and just like my DVD player) 4:3 videos come out stretched and I have to tell the projector the change aspect ratio manually. I don't know if this is the PS3's fault or the projector, and it's only a minor thing, but annoying.
- I had more interesting in the trailer on the Ricky Bobby disc than the movie, to see how HD looked.
- Playstation store is actually kinda lame in the interface dept. If people are praising this over the 360 Marketplace, I shudder to think what that's like.

Games

- Resistance is fun. I'm not a huge FPS player but I had a good time. Jumped into a multiplayer match after playing the regular game for about 2 minutes. Saw BobTheFork (hi). I sucked, but had a good time. Seemed like everybody sucked, I guess that makes sense since everybody was a noob. :)
- Motorstorm demo-- less exciting than I expected. As many people have said, the graphics are not as good as the trailers we've seen but still really good-- no shock there. But the gameplay felt overly simplistic, like this is a game I've played a zillion times before. I generally like racers, but I have played them a lot less in recent years for this reason. I wanted the experience to feel different, not just look prettier. Still fun, just not as amazing as I hoped. One humorous note for those who've played it-- there's a "SLOW" sign that, every time I flew over it and off the cliff, felt was commenting on my learning ability. :)

Haven't d/l anything else yet. I too wwish there were background downloading.

I haven't played with much else yet, I had a priority of getting my account up and getting some games in, plus checking out the video (which looks amazing, btw). I'll probably pick up Rirdge Racer, since I haven't played the 360 version making this one brand-new. But mostly this is going to be a R:FOM machine for a while, play BluRay player.

Oh, for people worried that it won;t upscale DVDs-- I guess my TV handles that OK, since they look fine.

Has anyone tried hooking their PS3 up to a CRT VGA monitor? I'm not really sure, but shouldn't a component -> VGA adapter let you do it? I'm curious because I can't afford a new monitor or HDTV at the moment (as well as a PS3), and playing on my 24" Sony 480i TV seems... wrong. :( My CRT VGA monitor is my last hope.

Yeah this TV is awesome, I have the same one except the speaker part is black instead of silver. It's 720p but it should be around or less than $1000 by now. Also, I must warn any potential buyers that PIP is ONLY for HDMI and component. I run 360 on VGA, PS3 on HDMI so no PIP for me :/
I get HDMI and TV too. I downloaded the motorstorm demo while watching TV.

A furious Mayor Thomas M. Menino vowed yesterday to bill Sony Corp. for the chaos that swirled around the release of its PlayStation 3 machine after Boston police had to quell crowds grown frenzied and unruly by the hype surrounding the coveted consoles.

“We had to rush in 12 police cars with officers there and take them off the streets of our city where they’re doing their patrols, to squelch the crowd that we had there,” Menino said, referring to a throng of 500 at Copley Place.

“It’s something that should not be tolerated,” he said. “It’s wrong to take advantage of the public that way, wrong by the manufacturer and by the retailer.”

Japan-based Sony made only 400,000 PlayStation 3’s available for the product’s launch, and thousands camped out for days at stores across the nation for a shot at shelling out $500-plus for the holiday must-have.

“The mayor feels this is a ploy by big business to fill the pockets of their stockholders on the public’s back without any regard for public safety,” said Menino’s spokeswoman, Dot Joyce.

Police had to control crowds at the Copley Plaza Mall’s Sony Style, where throngs rushed the doors at 5 a.m., and at the Fenway Best Buy, where more than 400 people were lined up by noon Thursday.

“It was ridiculous,” said Fernando Villanueva, 22, of the South End, who camped out in the rain starting Wednesday and paid $630 for a PS3. “We tried to keep it orderly by creating a list and having a roll call every half hour,” he said. “But the store said our list was meaningless; it’s going to be a mad rush, and whoever gets through the doors first gets one.”

Police eventually convinced Best Buy to honor the list. But elsewhere, mobs of customers stampeded into stores, injuring a man in Wisconsin and forcing authorities to close a Wal-Mart in California.

In Connecticut, two armed thugs tried to rob a line of people outside a Putnam Wal-Mart at 3 a.m. Michael Penkala of Webster refused to give up his money and was shot, police said. He was in stable condition yesterday at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center in Worcester with non-life-threatening injuries, said Connecticut State Police Lt. J. Paul Vance.

Sony spokesman Dave Karraker said 400,000 PS3’s were all the company could produce for the launch. The chaos “is not something we planned or foresaw,” he said.

If Sony didn’t, nearly everyone else seemed to know that limited supplies and high demand were a formula for trouble.

“All this hype was created by some marketing ‘genius’ who didn’t think out the end game,” said Hub public relations guru George Regan. “When you have people waiting for hours, even days, in the rain, and someone gets hurt, all for the ‘privilege’ of paying $600 for some game, sooner or later, it’s going to backfire.”

Hahahahah

Menino is retarded. Bumbling, lispy, doughy idiot!

I can't believe he actually blamed Sony. Blame Best Buy for not ever thinking how they will handle console launches through.

Not a big deal but mine has crashed twice already, once when loading the F1 demo and once when attempting to boot RR7. Seems more like software problems than hardware but still scary after what I've been through with the 360.

3 year warranty ftw.. :D

Actually, a lot of people said in-store demo had worse graphics than what we've seen, but the downloadable demo indeed looks much better, and is basically the same thing we've been seeing in the latest videos and trailers.

This wasn't right out of the box for MS either you know...

360 did come out a year ago.

Someone photoshop this please.

Yes the in-store demo and the one on the PSN are very different for Motorstorm

-improved framerate
-the ground textures looks better
-theres more cars on the track

The average Ebay PS3 price has dropped considerably. I saw one guy selling a 60GB PS3 with 2 games and an extra controller for a bit over $1000. I think most people saw this coming.

I purchased a Mororola Blutooth Headset model HS850 for my PS3.

What I failed to notice was a sticker on the packaging saying "For use with Bluetooth enabled phones only". Now am I out of luck or will the PS3 recognize this as a usable headset?

Yesss! First place in Motorstorm by more than four seconds!!

I got first - FINALLY - last night too. The game is awesome, but I feel like it's tough with the Sixaxis. I kinda wish the the bumper and triggers were back a little further.

So, I'm guessing from the lack of responses that's a no.

I don't think so. But I haven't ripped/copied any music yet, so I haven't tried. I've been busy with other stuff. :)

Right now, I am taking a break as my 2-year-old (the one with the Spy Hunter hat, if anybody remembers that) is watching a video on it.

Speakig of which-- he really likes Motorstorm. "Car fall down!" he yells whenever I crash (which is often). Consequently, I have played it more and I am actually liking a lot more than my earlier impression. As I get better, I am finding it a better game.

Still not as impressive as the trailer.

Graphics are not all that important to me, so I didn't look closely. I just wasn't as blown away.

Resistance, OTOH, lives up to everything I've seen.

the update... WHAT IN THE WORLD. it's downloading so slow... how big is it? it must be like a gig....

EDITS: only 98 megs... man sony really needs to upgrade their servers....

I have the same exact headset. works fine for me. :)

btw, was it stated somewhere that you cannot listen to music and webbrowse at the same time? It seems to be working for me; music & web browsing at the same time. :D

Is it me or is that opening guitar clang from the Nirvana track the same sound they use when you select stuff in Guitar Hero?

What trailer are you talking about? Are you talking about the CGI trailer?

xbl 360 was also very when it first came out. give it time guys, all will be patched up....xbl has to go through 2-3 updates before they could refine their user interface and features.

Eurogamer has a show with a 'behind the scenes' with Evolution and Motorstorm, footage from new tracks is shown and it looks absolutely great:

http://www.eurogamer.net/tv_video.php?playlist_id=1367&s=l

In the show they also talk about Wii and other games.

Some of the concept art shown there is quite..interesting. The Houdini stuff particularly.

edit - and the footage just looks incredible. Seems we're gonna get a lot of microtransacting with this after launch, which I'll be so weak for..

has anyone got the remote view on PSP to work? I upgraded my PSP to the latest firmware but I am not seeing any option on there to connect it to the PS3.

OK .. Motorstorm needs to come out NOW. CRAZIEST racer I've ever played. I've never ever ever played a racing game that's this insane. The amount ot things going on onscreen at such blistering speeds (especially in 1st person view) blows my mind. This cell processor is really something else.

my only complaint with motorstorm is that there is not enough gravity. It feels kind of like racing on the moon. You hit a little rock and bounce up 20 feet in the air :lol

You need to update the PSP to version 3.0 which i'm not sure if it's out yet.
