Official US/JP PLAYSTATION 3 Launch Thread

You're thinking of Designer's Republic. Also, you're 100% right. Wip3out "wipes" (ha!) the floor with XL and 1, design wise. GoTeki FTW.

Designers Republic rocks. The style of the Wipeouts done without them is embarrasing. I even read an interview of the guys doing art for one of them, and it was just pathetic how they were explaining their tacky approach as a "new, fresh take".

Not every wipeout after wo3 has had bad style. Wipeout Pure done an excellent job at replicating the XL look, even the game cover art was cool.

Fusion was a joke all round though.

Yeah, Pure was a nice return to form all around.

Hardwork + luck, I got it fair and square. Plus I am not scalping it.
Then what do you do with 2 other PS3s? This Thanksgiving has been the worst for me thanks to Sony and scalpers. Sheesh.

Resistance kinda breaks the trend. The XMB friends list shows you what everybody is playing and that friends list is used in RR7, for example.

Resistance uses the same login and user system obviously. You just need to pull names from your friendslist to fill up the one within Resistance.

Today I tried Battle Collesseum:

Good news: Load way faster.

Bad news: I looks worse through HDMI at 480p, It never looked great in PS2 through composite in my TV, but now is worse. I want to try more pixel based games but I suspect they won´t look any better (hope Nippon Ichi, SNK and everyone using sprites go for HD this generation, I know is expensive but I believe is a must).

Ridge Racer 7 is lovely, so glad I skipped 6... the ruins tracks are visually awesome and the music is incredible.

so what's the verdict on RR7 for you PS3 owners that also have RR6? i've played the hell out of RR6 and beat it to completion, so is RR7 worth the $60 bucks? or should i just skip it entirely and go with resistance (which i'm only somewhat interested in)?

If you played the hell out of RR6, RR7 doesn't get interesting until you have unlocked most of the stuff and can do more car customizations, which is quite cool. I quit RR6 about 2/3 of the way cuz the pace of the game was too slow. RR7 is way better in that regard. Still waiting to get enough people to try out online team and pair battles. Those seem like they could be a lot of fun.

Hey! I want some friends on my PSN. My gamertag is Suikodan so add me either in Resistance or in your console! :lol

(Suikodan is also my GT for 360 btw.) :)

Is anyone else experiencing weird controller glitches?

While playing Resistance, the controller will either stop responding or my character will move in a random direction for a couple of seconds before control is restored. I beat Resistance over a 2 day period and I experienced the glitch fairly regularly, maybe once every hour or two. Resistance is the only game I bought and I haven’t experienced the glitch in any of the demos, but I also haven’t played them for nearly the same length of time.

If I recall correctly, Bluetooth also uses the 2.4GHz spectrum, but I’ve never experienced this issue with the 360 controller. The only wi fi devices I have is a wireless router and wireless Logitech rear speakers, so interference shouldn’t be a concern. Maybe I have a faulty controller.

BTW, my PSN name is Imperium, if anyone would like to add me.

It might be the router. I changed the wireless channel on my router and my controller hasn't freaked out since.

Also it seems Best Buy got burned by Sony on the PS3 launch and is fighting back?

I just flipped through the sunday BB ad and for their video game section they had Wii, X360, DS, PC games. They didn't list a single PSP, PS2, or PS3 title nor show any of the three systems. Seemed sorta fishy...

Well that's great. It's not like it hasn't been impossible for me to find a PS3 (second shipment seems nonexistant down here; Target, BB, and EB never got any), and now they're giving Sony the cold shoulder? Super.

Anyone else get these faint horizontal lines that move up the screen vertically constantly? I'm wondering if it's because I'm using the PS2 component cables while I'm waiting for my HDMI cable to come in.

Also, I got an error earlier when I tried to load a game that said "An error occurred during the start operation". No games would work until I powered it off and then back on. Anyone run into that?

I haven't. And I don't want to jinx myself but my PS3 has been great so far.

rr7 does a pretty good job of rearranging rr6's content, but it's still essentially rr6. i'm having a decent time with it, but even as a ridge fanboy, i'm not sure it's worth $60. definitely go with resistance if it's one or the other. i wasn't too excited about resistance -- i wasn't even going to buy it until i found out that rr7 was an rr6 expansion -- but it far exceeded my expectations, it's one of the best shooters i've played, and it's almost implausibly polished for a launch game.

i think it's more on account they think PS3'll sell regardless, so why waste ad space? ;)

yea, after spending some time with the resistance demo (which has tons of content btw, they give you more than one level and a couple boss fights even!) i'm leaning towards it. i've just been a bit shooter'd out lately with r6 vegas, lost planet multi and gow. but so far it seems like a fresh experience i'd enjoy. the weapons add enough variety from the typical fps formula.

after d/ling the JPN rr6 demo, i did like the little graphical touches they've added to the game and the presentation makes it feel different than rr6. my only gripe is that beyond all that it still feels like the same game. slipstream feels tacked on because if i recall, racing behind an opponent closely in rr6 also gives you a chance to speed up and catch up to him. maybe it's just me, but it feels like that was also a feature of rr6 without actually labeling it. i think i'm going to pick up rr7 if i can find a deal on it or when it gets cheaper.

thanks for the feedback guys, although i said i wasn't too interested in resistance, it's probably the game i'm going to try out. seems like there's enough content in the game to warrant a $60 purchase.

btw, if anyone wants to add me, my PSN ID is hypoetical.

i'll add you to my friends list once i get done w/ this resistance demo :).

FYI: I've added this to the issues list, if someone can enlighten me.

I understand that you can't use 480i with HDMI, but the thing is 480p games on my TV unstretched gives me a square 3:3 format. So every non 16:9 PS2 games just looks plain horrible. Anyway to force 480i without using component cables?

mine is nearly always on the stage 2 fan so its fairly noticable. any suggestions for ventilation? its near nothing warm and out in the open. vertical or horizontal better?

is there any chance that running it off 240v will create more heat internally from the PSU? Or would feeding it 120v be the same because the wattage would go up to compensate

Yea, a bunch of us were having that problem. Turns out it's a result of something called a "ground loop," and most of us were able to resolve it by simply unplugging the coaxial cable from the back of our telveisions. There's also a workaround in case you don't want to unplug it, requiring a small (and supposedly cheap) go-between. Anyways, this thread has more details:

Just got my PS3. Went through most of this thread but I missed a few points.

1. What is the whole 1080i issue? If I set my PS3 to 720p, am I fine? I prefer 720p over 1080i on my television.

2. Any suggestions when I first boot it up? downloads, things to check out in settings etc.

Thanks guys.

For games you are A-OK. For Blu-Ray movies, I think you need 1080i.

My PS3 gave me 3 quick beeps before I shut it off today... surely that doesn't mean it's going to self-destruct, right?

Right? ;)

Seriously though, first time I've heard those 3 beeps.

It happens if you force a shutdown while it's thinking.

I've actually started to go to BB and Target just to play the Motorstorm demo now, since finding a PS3 is proving to be harder than anticipated. Is the downloadable version significantly better?

Under the "Sad But True" file, Chan Lowe, the local political cartoonist for the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, laughs in the face of everyone who participated in the PS3 launch, and takes a jab at the Wii gamers too.
There was violence at the Wii launch? Did I miss something?

No comparison... lol. Night and Day. The framerate of the in store demo is garbation.

Supposedly it's more up-to-date. The framerate of the downloadable demo is very smooth, very solid (I have experienced zero slowdowns) and a very good sense of speed as well, especially on the bikes. SO AWESOME.

SO

AWESOME

Is there anything useful that we (US) can download from the Japanese store??? Movies, games, demos, etc???

see, who says all the people that "only buy the console" are scalper scum. :::thumbs up:::

hm...after level 2, genji seems to be moving into "flawed but enjoyable" territory -- though i'm sending it back down to "excrementally awful" territory if i see any more "puzzles" like the ones in the first level. it's nicely varied, it's well-presented, and the battles get quite intense at times. the vaunted realtime character change (only possible with the power of playstation 3) would be cool if two of the characters weren't really unpleasant to play. and yoshitsune's animations are just gorgeous -- i spent a good five minutes slashing the air and flipping around just now.
