Official US/JP PLAYSTATION 3 Launch Thread

I don't really get why so many people are uptight about the 60gig. If you need wifi or else you can't get online...then sure. But for me it came down to "I want to buy a 60gig!", "Wait... 60gig is out of stock and 20gig is in stock?", "I want to buy a 20gig!". I dunno, I didn't even have to think about it.

Hey! Finally got a PS3 today, totally by accident.

The team went out on a research assignment this morning, and on the way back I stopped in at Robson St. Future Shop on a whim. What do I see but a lovely young lady carrying a PS3 box.

"Excuse me, miss"
"Yes sir?"
"I want your box."
"Excuse me?"

After we worked past that unfortunate choice of words, she sold me a 20gig PS3, Resistance and the 2-year warranty (since we all know Sony products fall apart as soon as you get them home). My replacement 100gig HDD comes in tomorrow and then I'm getting my Resistance on! Wooo!

Futureshop got one of the worst warranty......I had to wait for 4 weeks when my PS2 broke.

congrats bish, seems like it's getting a bit easier to find a PS3 now that the thanksgiving rush has died down a bit.

QFT
for upgrading the HDD, you will feel better owning a 20GB PS3 because you can actually buy a 80GB or a 100GB HDD for the extra 100 bucks.

yup, no remote play. but from what i hear, it's pretty useless.

Needless to say when the availability goes back up I will have a 60GB to complement my 20GB just so I can FREAKING GET IT TO WORK WITH MY PSPS!!!

Wow, I ****ed up big time...

I decided that I did want it. So I called them up to see if they still had the PS3 in stock (one or so hour later) and they tell me they don't have it anymore. :(

Yep, there are ones that draw power from USB on ebay:)

My XP install is formatted to NTFS, will I be able to see a FAT32 drive in XP and transfer files to it?

Before you go wasting your money on eBay make sure the enclosure is a 2.5" SATA enclosure, my friend made the same mistake when he bought one for like 20$. Yes your XP will be able to see FAT32 partitions.

When are we going to get some new Heavenly Sword media or media of the other interesting PS3 games? I'm getting tired of waiting...

well, I still can't get the update to go through.

On top of that, my ****ing PSP doesn't have a big enough memory stick to allow me to do it that way... and all the damned USB plugs I have aren't two way (meaning there's the large USB plug on one end and the smaller one on the other end.)

Goddamnit this is bullshit...
I just want to play some Resistance online. -_-

Are you able to back up saves to an SD card? I wanna install YDL and I don't wanna lose my resistance save.

What's YDL?

And yes, you can back up your saves! I like how Wii and the PS3 will allow you to back up saves on media cards now. Just stick a media device in the PS3, go to the save file and hit triagle then copy. The save file structure is similiar to the PSP.

I was in Circuit City today and apparently they got 2 of them in...noticed someone buying one, and the worker said it was 1 of 2.

Dunno if this applies nationally, obviously (I'm in DFW)

Awesome. :)

Does anyone know if there is a way to set the PS3 to not auto-boot into whatever game is inserted? Further, it would be nice it if didn't even auto-boot into the games menu since when you have a demo or downloaded game installed it will auto jump into the title's info screen (some of which have really loud and annoying music).

Any ideas?

I disable autoboot during the ps3 startup by holding the left dpad button.

edit - looks like if you hold a button, the disc doesn't auto-boot.

Who did you rent from? I always used Hollywood Video, as they were close, but they don't seem to be renting HD-DVD or BD movies yet.

Netflix is a great choice for Blu Ray and HD DVD movies. Just a couple of days ago I added the option to include Blu Ray movies to my account and it automatically changed any movie in my queue to the Blu Ray version, if one was available. . I was pleasantly surprised at the variety of movies that had Blu Ray versions; I didn’t realize that the studios had adopted the format so quickly. No extra charge for Blu Ray either.

just picked up a bluetooth headset -- motorola h300, touts 30 hours of talk-time per aaa battery. synced up fine. i guess i'll test it with resistance later tonight. isn't there a gaf clan?

Yep.. that's where I got MI:3. Just wanna reiterate again how GREAT that film looks in HD. To use an overused cliche', it's jaw dropping!

the "automatically load the splash screen of the first game on your hd" thing has to go. blast factor is annoying enough, but if it was the ridiculously loud motorstorm music i would've kicked my ps3 to bits by now

oh shit... it went back to the XMB... now it kind of hangs every 5 seconds. It just freezes for a second then gos back to normal :(((

Now when I try to do system update it tells me everything is fine and no need to update. I am officially getting worried. :(

Agreed.

The situation is completely different from the Xbox 360 scenario, where you basically do get screwed by purchasing the core pack.

With the inclusion of HDMI, the 20 gb PS3 becomes quite a bargain. By the time there's actually homebrew stuff that can take advantage of the extra hard drive space, you can upgrade to a much bigger hard drive with the 100 dollars you saved. There's no reason to believe I'll fill up the 20 gbs anytime soon (haven't filled up my 360 hd yet). I have no immediate need for wifi (if you do, then the 60 gb is obvious for you). And I'd use USB memory sticks rather than the ones the PSP uses.

When I picked up my PS3 at the store, there were no 60 gbs. I made no hesitation to purchase the 20 gb version. In fact, if you don't care about wifi, it's the obvious choice by far. Of course, if your intention is to sell it on ebay, your decision is complicated :)

Not to mention, I like having it entirely black without the cheap chrome.

Anyone have an ETA on release dates for new games at the PS store? I believe FLOW is in December...but havent seen an update list anywhere..

There was a list floating around somewhere with games releasing on consecutive Mondays (only listed SCEA internal stuff though and only 3 games from memory).

fl0w is due 4 December I think.

In this very thread.

I don't know where it came from, though.

ok the thing is definatly still spazzing out. I think its the controllers. I never had this problem before the update :(

I keep seeing you come on-and-offline. It's quite surreal.

Have you reset/recharged the controllers?

yes it is definatly something with the controllers.

with one controller I get video freeze-ups. If I turn that one off and try the other one I get the spazz out spin in place for a second but no freezes. I think my 2 controllers are jockeying for control and making the thing go crazy...

so how do I get them to play nice? hook both up at startup with mini usb cables?

maybe your headset and your controller are interfering with each other?

Wow, was I standing next to you? I was in there for Superman Returns on HD DVD, saw an older guy buying one, asked if they had any more and lucked out. They had a few left but after I got mine, the line that grew behind me cleaned them out.

I was the English guy, if you were there at the same time...

I think both controllers were extremly low battery power and going in and out confusing the hell out of the PS3. Maybe the headset is low on battery power too.

Jesus christ bluetooth is gonna give me a heart attack :lol

A few days ago, when I started up the PS3 and tried to play MotorStorm, I got that exact same error message.

I popped in Resistance, and it gave me the same error when attempting to boot up.

Strangely, everything else on the XMB worked (Internet Browser, movie clips on HD), so I restarted the console and everything was fine. Gave me a really good scare, though.

EXACT same shit happened to me around release day. God that was scary.

Blim, did you get my second PM? Could really use your advice mate...my imported machine was DOA too, was wondering how you went about getting it repaired from Europe.
