Official US/JP PLAYSTATION 3 Launch Thread

Random side note...

I only just recently saw that PS3 "baby doll" commercial and recall some complaints aimed at it. I can certainly understand some people disliking it, but I thought it was absolutely awesome (the sound in particular). Surprisingly creepy to the point that I could see young children becoming rather frightened of it. :P

using fat32 or ntfs on the external drive?

this guy attached his external drive no problem...

Yeah it has to be fat32.
If it is , then it will immediately be recognized.
If it is NTFS then it will act as described.

Hey, has anyone been able to connect an external HD to your ps3 and actually have it recognized? Whenever I connect my lacie it turns on and a get the loading swirl on the xmb, then nothing comes up, even though i'm sure i've got mpegs and mp3s on there. WTF? It's supposed to recognize all usb mass storage devices, right? Right?

edit: sorry if this has already been addressed

I've done it, no problems.

FAT32, fwiw.

Also, I accidentally installed Linux on it. :(

Thanks for the prompt info, everyone. My HD is indeed NTFS, is there any way to convert it or something? Or is that a really stupid question?

can the ps3 play backup dvd's like the ps2 can?
I'm pretty sure it can. Though i'll have to try one later to make sure.

Can you connect it to your computer? If so you can probably use the format utility on your PC, and just check Fat32.

I can connect to my computer, but NTFS is the only option in the format utility. Could I maybe do it if i first reformat the drive?

I'm not really sure to be honest. It should be a selection in the format utility.
You are asking to format it so you can format it again in fat32? I'm kinda confused. :x

I know a manager of a store up north and they got 4 in today so he called me and I had a relative run down and pick one up. It's being shipped via overnight on Friday so I'll have it on Saturday.

I'll probably grab RR7 when it gets here. I'm just glad to have one and have it out of the way.

The stuff I REALLY want to play on it won't be out until 2007 or 2008.

can you check if it works and get back to me? i tried one and it didn't and i don't have any other backups to try and maybe that one is just not working.
it will leave the xmb but there is no picture or anything for the movie.

Just tested a few discs.

Plays them fine for the most part. DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD-RW all worked fine. It even played a PAL DVD my ps2 wouldnt play. VCD/SVCD discs showed up as data disc with currupt files on them though. And unfortunately, I Don't have any DVD-A or SACD discs I can try on me.

k cool, strange that the dvd disc i tried would work on a standalone but not on the ps3.

How did you load the dvd? did you click on the dvd disc in the xmb under movies or did you do it a different way? also can you go from dvd to xmb by pressing the ps button like in a game?

thanks again for checking.

Inserted the disc and a little Gold disc icon came up with "DVD+R" or "DVD-R" or "DVD-RW" under it and played just like the orginal discs did. SVCD/VCD discs were blue icons with sub directories with a currupt movie file.

I dont think you can access the XMB from the movie while playing, it just asks you to quit to the XMB IIRC. I think with all disc based movies it signs you out of the XMB so no notifications will pop up while you are watching the film, or something like that.

I just bought some Blu-ray titles ..

Mission: Impossible 3
Rising Sun
Flight of the Phoenix
Gone in 60 Seconds
Ice Age: The Meltdown
Nacho Libre :D

I popped in the Ice Age disk and man that squirrel's tail looks so furry and real ... its amazing! I'll post some pics tomorrow in the night, have an exam early morning. :lol

goddamn, how much that cost you? :D

Another gripe I have with the PS3 is the absence of a USB port on the back of the console. WHAT WERE THEY THINKING by omitting this? Instead they put 4 ports on the front of the console? And now when I wanna hook up peripherals (drives, cameras, etc) I have all of these nasty wires hanging out the front of my entertainment center? I thought the PS3 was the entertainment hub? Why would I want it looking like a mess? ARGH, the designers should be ashamed.

Also yes, I was able to hook up my HDD after reformatting my NTFS drive to FAT 32. I had to use a Linux partitioning utility via a live CD to switch from NTFS to FAT32. You CANNOT switch from NTFS to FAT32 via any standard Windows utilities like you can to switch from FAT32 to NTFS.

100CAD total. Bought them cheap off a friend, which is why couple titles are not what I wanted. :D
Not bad, not a terrible selection either. (though I could do without Flight of the Pheonix :p), and I havent seen Nacho yet.

What tv do you have powering those suckers? :D

today, I upgraded my 20GB PS3 into a 100GB PS3 and I have become and downloading whore

Wait, you can install Linux on an external drive?! If so, I'm going to try that.

I didn't do it on purpose. :(

I don't know if it will have any issues booting, I had re-installed before I ever tried to use it practically.

You can certainly mount external drives for more space. The OS recognizes them, so you should be able to do all sorts of Linux trickery with them.

What's the easiest way to transfer files over to the PS3? Can you copy files from removable media? Can you see the PS3 HD over the network?

For a multimedia hub it seems kinda isolated.

PS3 web browser a blessing in disguise with the Red Kawa PS3 File Server. :)

And yes you can copy files from removable media (USB sticks, memory cards, external hdds, ipods, data dvd/cd discs, etc.)

Here's a question specific to neogaf. Is it possible to highlight the spoilered out text from the PS3 web browser?

Oh and is there a more specific way to see what speeds you're getting dl'ing from the sony store or is it just take whatever the MBs it is and divide by the time it took you to dl it?

Havent tried it yet, I'll test it later. It should be able to do it by pressing and holding X while moving the arrow over the text, but again I'm not 100% sure.

Unfortunately I think it only displays the % and the MB downloaded so far. :(
Hopefully sony can get on that, and more importantly include background/multiple downloading.

I'm playing Shadow of the Colossus on my PS3 now.

Because the game supports 480p, it looks fabulous.

Such an amazing game.

not directly, but I guess you could click 'quote' and read it in the reply pane, then just press 'back'

Tried a few things and still couldn't get it to highlight (with a controller), oh well guess i'll have to walk to my PC if i want to read those posts heh.

As for the speed tests, guess i'll just the info-divide method. Although i did just find a website website that'll check your speeds to the internet accurately. Works perfectly too since it's macromedia based of all things (most need different forms of javascript). You can check out it out at http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/

i re-downloaded almost every demo again after swapping HDDs (20GB: buh bye... 100GB: Hellooo!)

after formatting my new HDD, I got the latest firmawre update then downloaded the following demos:
Genji II, Motorstorm, Resistence, F1, BlastFactor, Crash Cash, Lemings, Sodekiuryuken

they all work fine

PROTIP: make sure that the last demo you download is a silent splash screen demo because that if Motorstorm is the last demo you downloaded, it will wake you up when you turn on you PS3

I thought it was just the last thing you highlighted in the game menu before you shut down?

on boot up, the latest demo will be the featured game 1st.

but scrolling through the menu after scrolling around, it's the last one selected that appears when you scroll back left and right

oh ok, that explains it. I don't shut down my ps3 much, and I have multiple users so when it boots up it doesnt go to any game menu, just user selection. :p
