Official US/JP PLAYSTATION 3 Launch Thread

Now that it looks like I have a 60GB coming to me, I thought I should ask a couple questions. What is the warranty Sony provides for the PS3 (1yr)? Do I need the PS2 Memory card adapter if I want to play some PS2 games on the PS3? Thanks

one year warranty yup and yes you would need the adapter unless you want to play all your ps2 games from the beginning.

Well I don't have a PS2 memory card so I suppose I would have to start from scratch on every game. =\ Good to hear about the 1yr warranty though! :D

if you live in the Montreal burbs of Brossard, head over to Wal-Mart,, they got 2 60GB PS3s sitting there

now I'm off to watch Rocky Balboa,, good night

So I decided to buy Blast Factor a minute ago - but when I got up to the screen where I need to choose an amount to add to my wallet - the three choices at the bottom are not in english - they are some foreign characters. US PS3 set to US and english and all that....strange stuff - guess I will try again later. Edit - tried it again and it was in English and worked :)

Another weird thing happened to me a few days ago - I transfered four MP3 albums from a memory stick. Three had jpg folder icons and one didn't have any images - the three with images ended up with nothing (figured out how to manually assign the folder icons later on) but the one album with NO IMAGE ended up with the proper folder icon. I am soooooo confused by this one as I don't even have that image on my computer nor was it on the memory stick. PS3 can do magic?

I'm curious as well.

One advantage is the import PS2 & PS capability.
Disadvantage is the warranty

If you don't need wifi, are okay to use a USB reader and don't mind missing out on the PSP remote play feature, the 20 GB is fine and you can upgrade the HD whenever you want.

Yes, you should be able to find a USB reader for 10 bucks. At retail, they'll go for a little higher though, $15-20.

ok thx , i dont care about the psp since i dont have one...anything missing beside that?

Some questions (i did a thread but no success :D)

Just wanna know , if having a 20gb Japanese ps3 is smart , since i dont want to use wifi (ethernet ftw) and i think im gonna change the HD.

-Can i use an usb card reader?

-Is the japanese system bad? i mean , the dashboard has english too? are the firmware the same for the 2 system (us & jap) or different?

-After that , all the us games will work ? and for movies , its gonna work too?

-Playing online with US possible?

-Micro transaction possible? (im from euro)

Answers for all of this would be awesome.

Thx

In the PS3 manual I noticed something strange.

HDMI: 480p,720p,1080i,1080p

Component: 480i,480p,720p,1080i,1080p

Is that correct? Should I go with component over HDMI if I plan on playing quite a few PS2 games?

f@luS said:
id like to know if PS2 games with HDMI still sux?

want to play ZOE 2.....can i order it?
PS2 games though anything, be it composite or HDMI, still suffer from the same image sharpening / degradation.

Still no 720p BR output :(

Surely there is a scaler in the machine-for example, I downloaded the 1080p GTHD trailers and my PS3 outputs them at 720p as that is what my machine is set to.

just ordered my US Ps3 60gb

for 620euros , its only 20+ official price here but 3 month before..

(ok , if you want in dollar i paid 800$ , including the 100$ for shipping that shit)

I thought you didn't need the adapter for the 60GB PS3 because it has a PS2 memory card slot?

do i need a special stepdown converter to work on an USA PS3 in pal country? its kinda a big system so i wonder

I cant find these mythical PS3s on store shelves that GAF is telling me are everywhere. Each place sold out.

Anyway, I have a question about the hdd.

I know the two models are labeled as 20GB and 60GB as free space, but what is the actual space on each hdd?

The X360 hdd is also labeled 20GB but in actuality is only about 13GB.

Am I the only one who is finding the analog 'dead zone' just as loose as on the DS2?

Go to your browser and look and see what large circles you can make with the analog thumbstick, all with your mouse cursor remaining still.

Seems just as loose in-game as well. :-/

I first noticed this when trying to snipe in the Resistance demo, and I experienced the same aggravating lack of fine control that I had in PS2 shooters.

I don't know about the 20GB model, but my 60GB model has 55GB available out of the box.

Sniping in Resistance is basically impossible for me.

anyone else having problems getting games online with NHL 2K7?

You need to forward port 4658. Still may have trouble connecting with certain people but if you can't accept a challenge from them you should be able to send one and play. Good luck.

I just don't see how this loosey-goosey control has survived for so long. The only thing I can imagine is that so many Sony-platform gamers aren't multiplatform and therefore they haven't experienced how much better analog thumbstick control can be.

Eleven years ago Ridge Racer for PSOne had a user-calibrated dead zone for the NeGcon. How can we have progressed so far while taking other steps backwards?

Anyone randomly lose the video signal from the PS3s? Just happened to me. I had to reboot to get the signal back. WTF?

There is a thread over at AVS with a list of TV's with picture issues.

Also, I scored a PS3 yesterday and I'm loving it. The download speed was crazy fast last night. I downloaded the Motor Storm, GT, and NBA demo in like 40 minutes. But today, the store must be getting hit hard because it is taking forever to download anything.

I had the image disappear twice while watching Talladega Nights - but it came back after a second or two. This is over some broke ass Monster component cables so I thought it might have been that. I need to switch to my Sony ones and get the Monster ones replaced.

I'm having a lot of problems connecting to the PSN. I keep getting the 80710D23 error (error has occurred, signs out of PSN) whenever I try to connect. Maybe everyone's downloading GT:HD? I need to download it since I'm gonna show it to my friend who's a PS3 skeptic.

I think that developers are not allowed to implement calibration for the controllers, as this is handled internally in the pad itself. Personally, I've never had any problem with any of the controllers for any console (as far as calibration or analog dead zone).

I don't think any of the other console manufacturers allow this option either, for what it's worth.

you have to connect the router directly to the ps3. I think the firmware did something that effected the wireless connection.

Damn. :( I just updated mine, and same thing's happening to me. :(

Same here, Last night I had no problems connecting to the network. Today I can't get it to connect but I can still surf with the web browser.

Why? Nothing has changed in my setup since I installed Firmware 1.32 on the PS3 3 days ago. Are you telling me that Sony changed something on their side that completely cripples the 60GB Models to the point where you have to use a network cable and abandon the Wi-Fi?

Maybe not on your end - but you do know that the GTHD demo came out and the servers have been off and on for two days now??? You wouldn't be able to connect no matter what you did at certain times yesterday and today :D

Yeah I knew about that, I was luckily able to grab the GT:HD Demo yesterday. Hopefully it's just a issue on the Sony Servers. :)

Well I snagged the demo yesterday after a few hours of downtime. Then today I couldn't log in for an hour or two to check ranks and replays in GTHD so I would only worry about Sony getting more servers or bandwidth set up

As far as wi-fi, I plug mine into the router but my 60GB also works fine with wi-fi from a D-Link B router (DI-614+) via cable modem, and my buddies 60GB works fine with wi-fi and DSL so I wouldn't worry :)

Mine is connected directly to the DSL modem (20 GB here). I finally got it to work, but it seems to be random as to when I can connect. I doubt it's my modem, since I've never had any connection problems with Xbox Live on both Xboxes.

GT:HD is effin nice. Those cars look absolutely amazing. Can't say the same about the tracks, but I'm aware that it's just a HD upgrade over GT4. One thing I do like is it plays a hell of a lot better than GT4. It feels like a mix of GT3 and Forza and if GT5 is going to be like that with even better graphics, it's going to be an amazing year.

Is there any way to use a cockpit view like in the screenshots though?

I'm using component, though, and not HDMI. ;(

Is there a way to change the media cross bar color? I love the silver but the blue/black combo is way sexier

No, not yet.

Think of the PS3 this way: Anything you can think of to improve or update the PS3 is possible with a firmware update, but it isn't happening right now. Sony's saying the big update is coming in March when the European launch happens. Motherfuc*ers.
