Official US/JP PLAYSTATION 3 Launch Thread

did they enhance the visual display for when you play .MP3s in a recent update and I missed the news?

My music visualization is doing a bunch of really cool things that it never did before, like neat water droplets that slowly change colors, then turn into confetti-esque squares floating around, melting back into water drops, etc?

It use to just be that (what I like to call) 'cascading canyon', but it appears to do a lot of new stuff now (now it looks like the sun, pulsing with reds/yellows/oranges/purples, giving off light in space with little sunbursts.) @_@

Pretty sure that was always in there. IIRC, If you want to cycle through them you can with one of the analog sticks.

Hi all,

Just bought a PS3 (Asian), but was just wondering is there a sticker or tag that says which region is it in? Ohh does it have an internal power transformer 110V-220V?

Curse you GAF! CUUUURSE YOU! I broke down and bought a PS3 (60 gig). Gonna buy Resistance in a few days. :D

You will change that curse to gratitude very soon. PS3 and Resistance with GAFmates online is a great time no first-person shooter fan should be without.

some more questions, I'd appreciate any help....

1- has anybody tried comparing the PS3's deinterlacer to a good HDTV's? Basically, do 480i games look better converted to 480p by the PS3 or an above-average HDTV?

2- PSone games are... 320x240, right? So PS3 doesn't output that resolution, it scales it to 640x480?

3- this march update everybody's talking about, are there any rumors about it including some nice upscaling enhancements for BC? will it be out at the euro launch or a bit before?

I guess I cant join you guys? I have an Asian PS3 :(

i got a ps3!

my name on PSN is davepoobond, so i dont know what you can do with that...

i got Resistance, currently playing campaign right now.

so far everything seems to be working just great, except that my wifi connection is not staying connected to my router -- it keeps disconnecting and reconnecting over and over and its really annoying.

does anyone else have this problem? is there a way to fix it?

Try plugging up with a wired connection, and see if it works and then switch back to wireless and see if that fixes it. My cousin had this issue back in november on his ps3 but I forget if he fixed it or not. Havent talked to him for like a month (hes in another state).

and oh yeah, congrats. :)

yeah, i did that with the wired connection...and then it kept doing it still. actually, it did it at a faster rate, it seemed, after....

will have to experiment. perhaps i need a new router...i just hope it ain't the wifi in my ps3. doesn't seem like it.

Linksys 2.4 GHZ Wireless-B. its one of those bigger ones with the two antennas.

i should also mention i do not have the cd for this router to change any of the configurations

congrats Dave!

Check the official boards at Playstation.com and look at the network section for wireless help if we can't solve it for you.

My friends wireless connection does that as well. Aside from the annoying message popping up it doesn't seem to affect his gameplay or actually disconnect him. I'll try to find out what kind of router he's using. He's using Verizon DSL for reference.

interesting. it was really very annoying because i tried to register for a PSN name, and it would keep telling me that no connection could be established and i had to redo the whole process about 8 times. really annoying.

Hmmm, sounds like it may be a different issue for you. I'll try to find more info on his issues and how it affects him.

Also you shouldn't need the CD to adjust your router settings - it can be accessed through a web browser and the address you need to type to gain access to the settings depends on the router.

found a FAQ on the playstation boards that COULD be the problem:

Q: I'm getting disconnected every 30 seconds or so and then it logs me back in. What's going on?
A: The PLAYSTATION®3 seems to have a problem recognizing the SSID for a moment, but then it will log you back in. The fix to this seems to be to disable the SSID Broadcast on your router.

........i guess i could try that, but what does the SSID Broadcast thing do?

You know when you scan for a new wife network and it tells you all the names? Broadcasting the SSID provides the name of your net to someone scanning. Never a bad idea to turn off.

looks like it worked!

I'll add you, Dave, when I get back to school.

Y2Kevbug11. Send me an invite.

i added you, kev, so all you need to do is accept :)

Same, Dave. I'll add you as well tomorrow Kev. My name is zombiepulse

i'll add you and krypt0nian so when you guys are able to just accept it :D

this is pretty cool. there's a separate list for resistance though, huh

Yeah sorry, I drove home for the weekend and all my shit is in my dorm room. But I'll accept when I get back online. I don't have any games yet though, save for Blast Factor and a bunch of demos. I'm hoping to grab fl0w next week. Since my funds are pretty tight, I was about to go see Ghost Rider today and pay for myself and a couple of friends, but I think I'll save that money and get fl0w instead after hearing about another friend of mine walking out of the theater last night halfway through it. :lol

Run-on sentences ftw

I can't wait until they expand it to be able to access any PS3 media on the fly via wifi! :D

it holds great prospects. i might actually use this when i'm at work!

i bought the memory card convertor thing, too, but to my dismay it says you cannot transfer saves back to a mem card :(

also, i'm kind of annoyed to see that no extra usb cables come with the extra controller you pay 50 bucks for or the memory card convertor thing.

I have a ridiculously retarded question of mass proportions, but here goes: can you play online-enabled PS2 games on the PS3 if the PS3 is online? I've been wanting to play RE: Outbreak 1 and 2 and I just wasn't sure what I'd need to do in order to play it online through the PS3. I don't even know if it's possible. Please lend guidance to this lost dove.

Yeah I was annoyed about the no extra usb cable thing but that's fine. I can use my digi camera cable. Or use one wired and the other wireless and just switch them if the juice runs out.

How hot does this thing get? I am finding that it is getting rather hot in a relatively open, well-ventilated area. I guess it is supposed to double as a space heater or something...

No different from the PS2 - using the same online profile data you should have on your virtual PS2 memory card.

In specific reference to RE: Outbreak, I think the only thing that isn't supported for that game yet is the optional HDD use...but I don't think that stops you from playing it online.

brandon - you might find this site helpful

http://www.us.playstation.com/Support/CompatibleStatus

Sony's backward compatability list for the PS3...list all PS2/PSone games they've tested and any known issues. Looks like I might have spoken too soon about RE: Outbreak. File #2 mentions that it can't create an online profile, so that may stop you from playing that one online...the first one just lists the HDD issue though.

That's a lot of help, I really appreciate it. I was thinking about just getting the first one though... but I hope they fix this (if possible)

So it looks like Sony improved the US PSN store by adding the "what's new" column just like the JPN store has. Now you can just pop in daily for 2 secs, see if anything is new, and leave. Yay!

Dear Sony,

Please make it so that I am still connected to the PSN while playing PS2 games. I just noticed you're not connected...that sucks! I want my friends to know I'm online, just in a PS2 game...and I want it to show what PS2 game I'm playing. They have the SLUS IDs, can't they do this?

If they can't do this, then at least show "PS2 compatible software" or something. Lame.

Also, if you don't add in XMB integration from within games I am going to kill you.

Love,
Kevie

That's been available since day 1 in the US. It just hasn't shown up on the main page of the store, because those spots have been occupied by ads. But when you open a sub-page, Top 10 and What's New display. Is the What's new displaying on the main page now?

Is it time for a PAL Launch Thread now? For us that voluntary wants to beta test the PS3's PS2 emulator for such a low price!

We need one and it needs to be stickied but it's better to wait until after the GDC showing so we can get max detail in there.

Just tried another ps3 (3rd) on another hdtv (2nd) and always the same "burn" when blackscreen through hdmi (it goes away very fast)

weird thing

Might be a good idea, and that way the thread won't get derailed!

I was just going to ask this question.

Soon... Those who can't get enough of crap from Sony needs to have a thread where they can expose themselves!
