Official US/JP PLAYSTATION 3 Launch Thread

I have a question regarding extended warranties. I'm considering getting a PS3, but I'm not sure whether I should get an extended warranty or not (the initial warranty is 1 year after all). I'm inclined to buy one, but which one is the best deal?

The only way I think it would be worth it is if the extended warranty begins once the manufacturer warranty ends. In some cases I have seen extended warranties begin at time of purchase and to me that doesn't make sense if the product already has a warranty, you can't be double covered.

Right now the PS3 only supports 1080i as the HD output for Blu-Ray, otherwise if you don't have the PS3 set to output 1080i as a supported resolution is defaults to outputting 480p i believe.

So to properly play Blu-Ray you have to have 1080i set as a resolution and let your display scale it down to 720p. The scaler in my projector is fine though, so I don't really mind at all, I can't even tell the difference in the XMB between 720p and 1080i, so I just leave 1080i enabled all the time.

What the... So it doesn't support 1080p through HDMI for Blu-Ray? I just got a PS3, and I can't make it send 1080p to my 1080p HDTV for Blu-Ray. I thought it supported 1080i/p. :(

It does support 1080P for your 1080P tv, through HDMI.

He is talking about supporting a 720P set with Blu Ray movies.

How do I make it do that then? It just displays 1080i for me during a Blu Ray movie. It does 1080p on the dashboard though.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, thats odd. I dunno without seeing your tv settings.

Disable 1080i output before watching a blu-ray movie maybe? Dunno.

Really?

What model Samsung do you have? Are you sure it's 1080p native?

What blu-ray movies are you watching, btw? Aren't there a few titles out there that aren't full 1080p HD?

HL-S6187

It supports 1080p for my Xbox 360 with both games and HD-DVDs fine.

I was watching NIN's 'Beside You In Time' Blu-Ray disc.

I wonder if your HDMI input only supports 1080i, but saying your dashboard runs at 1080P throws it off.

To be honest though, going from 1080i to 1080P on your 1080P set is pretty much a nonfactor.

Below is Evan Powell's (Projector Central) appraisal of the 1080i vs 1080p controversy.

"The truth is this: The Toshiba HD-DVD player outputs 1080i, and the Samsung Blu-ray player outputs both 1080i and 1080p. What they fail to mention is that it makes absolutely no difference which transmission format you use—feeding 1080i or 1080p into your projector or HDTV will give you the exact same picture. Why? Both disc formats encode film material in progressive scan 1080p at 24 frames per second. It does not matter whether you output this data in 1080i or 1080p since all 1080 lines of information on the disc are fed into your video display either way. The only difference is the order in which they are transmitted. If they are fed in progressive order (1080p), the video display will process them in that order. If they are fed in interlaced format (1080i), the video display simply reassembles them into their original progressive scan order. Either way all 1080 lines per frame that are on the disc make it into the projector or TV. The fact is, if you happen to have the Samsung Blu-ray player and a video display that takes both 1080i and 1080p, you can switch the player back and forth between 1080i and 1080p output and see absolutely no difference in the picture. ."

I doubt that's the case as I previously had my laptop plugged in through hdmi outputting 1080p.

I feel like such a n00b. :p

It honestly might just be that particular disk. Have you tried anything else?

Yup, I've been doing that since day one. I just wish I could get the Mainichi Issho cosplay packs :(

How does one do this? Do you just make a new user with Japan as the region? I'd like to see the HD Gundam Musou trailer to make waiting easier...

I have the HL-S5087W and 1080P works just fine. I'll check my settings the next time I have a chance. Try dl'ing one of the 1080P demo's, see if they work properly.

Well, you do that for the free stuff, but the cosplay packs for Mainichi Issho actually cost money :(

There is stuff on the Japanese site for free that doesn't appear on the US or HK sites, so I would recommend setting up an account. You can usually tell what things are, and the free stuff is marked as 無料 in the price field. At the moment though there are no exclusive games/demos except for Mainichi, which is only good if you can understand some Japanese or you like the Brain Training-type stuff (I finally cracked the top 500! :D).

I'm thinking of this primarily for Japan exclusive trailers and demos. Priced items would be nice, but it's better than nothing.

I didn't see any demos on the JP Playstation store. Am I missing something? I can read katakana and hiragana (but not understand it all) and a small amount of kanji and I all could find were promo movies, downloadable PSP games, downloadable PS3 full games, but no demos. Like I said above, am I missing something?

It's all under New Game at the moment. There's Lemmings, Kazuo, Blast Factor, and Ridge Racer.

The demos are labelled with 体somethingsomething (the text is too small for me to read...).

1080p works fine for the dashboard and games (tried Blast Factor). It doesn't seem to stick for movies, and I know it's not the TV since I was using the very same HDMI input to plug in my computer and it displayed 1080p fine.

There's only one setting right? The video one where there are check boxes for 480p, 720p, 1080i, and 1080p, I believe.

What resolution does the XMB look best at? My monitor is native 720p and supports 1080i, but when I only check the 720 box, my monitor overscans the XMB screen (I guess that's what it's called when things on screen that aren't supposed to be cut off are) but when I check that as well as 1080i, it sets the XMB screen to 1080i. I've tried adjusting my monitor but nothing seems to work.

Also when I run a lot of games at 720p like GT:HD and Resistance (the demo), it overscans those as well.

Does your monitor have an option to turn overscan off? My projector allows me to turn overscan on or off in the menu.

So for those of us with 720p TVs and want to test out 1080p to see if it looks good before buying a BD title, will playing back a 1080p video from the PS store provide the same result? For whatever reason I just assumed it would playback in 720p straight from the PS3.

I was about to ask a similar question. I downloaded the Silent Hill BR clip and it looked really good, though I don't know if the resolution was 720p or 1080i while I was running it (I have all the boxes checked up to 1080i).

:lol looks like you picked a good first BRD:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=812481

NiN BRD is one of the very few 30fps encoded discs out there, apparently.
In the Blu-ray spec, 1080p/30 video is flagged as 1080i/60. During playback the stream is then displayed properly as progressive 30 fps 1080 video, although your on screen display will say 1080i because it's reading the flag.

Question for the audio tech guys:

If I want to watch a movie with a 5.1 PCM channel by sending it downmixed 2.0 PCM -> receiver and then mix it back up to pro-logic, do I leave the audio (optical) option on bitstream or Linear PCM?

Likewise when I want to watch a movie with a DD True Audio track decompressed to PCM and passed to the reciever and mixed back out to prologic, do I do bitstream or Linear PCM?

I'm guessing the first situation doesn't matter and the second one is Linear PCM because that means the PS3 will decompress the DDTA track into raw PCM and pass it to the receiver as raw PCM, right?

oh crap my controller x triangle, circle, square, start, select buttons do not work

Dammit they WORK, but they do NOT work when i press the PS button to quit game.

Push R2 and L2 down really, really hard. When I first got my PS3, the R2 button was stuck, and as a result, my PS3 would ignore all controller input at certain screens. Firmly pushing it down all the way reseated it.

This is very important for me .

IS the BR movie of anything as good looking as PSN trailer of the same movie?

I have Talladega BR with my PS3.Since i have a 720p , i have to watch it @ 1080i. Its nowhere near the quality of the PSN trailer of the same movie.

Is it my TV which can not handle 1080i a proper way , or is the BR movie not as good looking as the trailer? (incredible quality).

If yes , i dream about a fix (720p br) , or ill wait for my 1080p tv to watch any BR....

So , anybody got a 1080p TV , and can try both the BR & trailer ?

thx

plenty of blu-ray titles look as good as the trailers available on PSN.

rent The Departed, Kingdom of Heaven or Black Hawk Down.

I have a 720p tv and the TD BR too and to me it didn't look any better than the DVD so I was pretty worried but every other BD as looked awesome, I think it is more a problem with the transfer and not as much a scaler problem. But you should check out another movie just to make sure.

I have superman too. It looks better than a dvd on 1080i (less artefact , sharper) but far from what i have with Psn trailer or Hd dvd xbox360.

Both PSN trailer (@ 720p) and HD dvd xbox (@ 720p) looks amazing (psn trailer even better).
But BR movies @ 1080i on my LCD looks like....a lil' better than classic dvd.

I think the problem is my tv , i wish i could test this on 1080p set

I had a quick question about playing PS2 games on the PS3. I am playing on a 1080p and the PS2 games don't fill up the whole screen..is there any way to get it to fill the whole screen?

I have my PS3 connected through HDMI and all i get is white noise. Does anyone know why this happens and how i can fix it? It's bothering the shit out of me. Sorry to kind of go off topic.

I have a stupid/paranoid question here...

Would placing my PS3 next to my left PC speaker damage the PS3 in any way? I know the wine cooler story and yes this is not the same but whatever. :p

DVD movies to be upscaled, PSone and PS2 may soon follow

Although the PlayStation 3 is without a dedicated video scaling chip, Sony Computer Entertainment worldwide studios president Phil Harrison revealed in a recent interview that the console would soon be getting some form of upscaling.

“You know, we're not sure when it's coming, but we're going to have DVD upscaling on Playstation 3,” said Harrison to Newsweek.

DVD upscaling is the practice of converting 480i/p material into a 720p or 1080i/p image for display on high-definition televisions that support higher resolutions. The result of upscaling is a slightly improved image that is most noticeable on fixed pixel displays such as plasma or LCD televisions.

Standalone DVD players that upscale the picture to higher resolutions are called “upconverting DVD players.” Computer DVD playing software like PowerDVD and WinDVD commonly feature DVD upscaling to produce an image that fits the selected resolution of the monitor.

The Xbox 360 is also capable of upscaling DVD movies, though a VGA cable must be used to connect the console to the TV in order to enable this feature.

The upscaling of PS3 games, however, remains to be a feature missing from the console’s hardware. Rumor has it on the Neoseeker forums, though, that the backwards compatibility of PSone and PS2 games exclusively though software emulation will open the door for previous generation software to be upscaled to 720p or higher resolutions.

Expect much more official PlayStation 3 news at Phil Harrison’s GDC keynote this Wednesday.

what exactly is ment by "upscaling" sorry I'm tech retarded, I have 1080p TV does that mean that the PS2/DVDs games will look better on it?

Has anybody tried playing CCCD's or LabelGate CD's on the PS3? I'm a little paranoid given the history of slot-loading drives and those discs.

... We don't seem to have any kind of PSN thread do we? I can't seem to find one anyway. It's not thread worthy but it is worth mentioning, so I think this is most applicable place.

The Hot Shots Golf 5 demo just got bumped up a week to the 16th of March now, because they reckoned the PSN would be shitting kittens if they released it on its intended 23rd of March date thanks to the European launch.
