Wikipedia said:
All of the sought after invitations for the Fifth World Fighting Tournament have been sent and now the 17 best fighters in the world begin their final phases of preparation. They must learn from their prior mistakes and perfect every aspect of their mind, body, and soul - for there is no room for mistakes in this competition. Little do they know that J6, the organization funding the tournament, has sinister ulteriour motives for the contest and the company's top secret Dural program is already well underway. In the organization's quest for world domination, the scientists at J6 are creating the ultimate fighting machine with human features. Their first model was defeated in the Fourth World Fighting Tournament, which drove them to kidnap Vanessa. She was able to escape with the help of an insider, but not before they captured her combat data and transferred it to the new advanced Dural model named V-Dural.

J6 is determined to find out who the inside traitor is that released Vanessa and more importantly, if V-Dural is indeed ready to defeat the world's best fighters. The Fifth World Fighting Tournament will reveal both - let it begin.

But the main reason you're reading this is probably to find out just how well the new online side of the game works, which is fortunate as we're about to tell you. Pretty damn well is the short answer and in general, lag doesn't affect the game anywhere near as drastically as we feared it might. After hundreds of fights, only few were anything close to the slideshow that is DOA4's online mode and you can usually get a fair idea of how the connection if from the pre-match stage fly-by - if it stutters, you're in trouble but otherwise, things should be fine. When you are unlucky enough to get a laggy match, drops cause button inputs to be missed which in turn leads to the wrong moves coming out. There's no chance for anything fancy here and players know it too, as exemplified by a Vanessa player we came across in a particularly slowdown-riddled game who decided his best bet was to simply spam the punch button and hope for the best. What a knucklehead.

At its best, though, VF5's online battles are almost as good as fighting somebody in the same room. You'll lose a few frames here and there, sure, making some hit throws and complex moves as well as high-level techniques like fuzzy guarding (tapping down while guarding exactly as attacks land to prevent damage from all heights of attack) pretty tough, but this won't worry too many normal players. Once you adapt to this (and learn how to cope with the occasional lag-fest, which is always going to happen now and again, especially without any kind of connection quality gauge), you'll establish that, while it might be a slightly different proposition to face-to-face versus play depending largely on your character and skill level, this is a welcome and incredibly well implemented feature.

I can't believe I have to wait for christmas to get this. I just don't have the money to buy VF5 again just because it's online even though thats reason enough. I'll probably rent it when it comes out to make the wait easier.

This game is going to be fun. Can't wait to just woop ass on all the xbox people who's only fighter they've played is DoA and think they're hot shit and then show em how you really do it.

Using the stick. Need to mod it to make it compatible with SFAC.

The Hori Stick?
If so, It works with SFAC out of the box.
In SFAC the OG Xbox's Black and White buttons are also automatically mapped to RT and LT, even though it doesn't say so in the controller config screen. I've had no problems playing SFAC.

I actually had a whole thread mapped out the other day, but had an accident...

Here's a portion from the character & history section for anyone who may care.

Looks like I won't have the game for a bit though.

_dementia,

No problem, feel free. They could also make some good avis if anyone is interested. I think I could salvage some of what I still had left from the post. I'll PM you or something so you can take a look and see if any of it could be useful.

Also, I think it would be more useful if the character portraits in the OP linked to each character's Wiki page on VFDC. They contain a lot of useful information concerning combos, frame data, strategies and whatnot. A lot of it is translated from the guides written by high-ranking Japanese players. Unfortunately, the data hasn't been updated for version C (as it isn't available yet), but much if not most of it should still apply.

Some characters also don't have complete entries yet, but the VFDC forums are another good source of info: http://virtuafighter.com/forums/ubbthreads.php/ubb/cfrm

I wish this game broke street date early like GH3.

I've been using Aoi and Eileen online mostly. Way too many damn people using Akira. My crappy DOA4 stick actually works pretty well for this game once I changed the button config.

IceCreamTaco is my GT.

Add me guys , im pretty damned good at vf5.

Tho the 360 ver will take me at least a little while to get used to,not to mention i havent played in well over 1 or 2 months.

Anyways, add me! i need skillful opponents who play faily often!

Edit : My main man is Goh. Other than that i use Vanessa or Aoi. Or Wolf.Wtv.

Im average with all characters , but my goh is very strong.

And to the guy who said a lot of people are using akira, sucks for them , its incredibly easy to counter that elbow =P

Edit : Region - Montreal , Qc - Canada.

gamerTag - Martial Loh
region - UK

I'm currently playing with Pai, but Im looking to learn how to use Brad too. Im available from 10pm-ish.

Lion has been my main fighter since VF4, so I'm pretty good with him. But I definitely don't consider myself an expert player, I guess I'm somewhere between beginner and intermediate.

Has anyone in this thread played one another yet? The games I've had so far have been for the most part positive. As long you match up with someone that has three bars, you should be OK.

If anyone wants to play, feel free to add me. I might be on later tonight (around midnight Pacific time) for some unranked games.

Anyone who is slightly above average but not ass-raping awesome can feel free to add me and look me up whenever.

Tag's MuzEX

I play as more than half the characters, but I frequently gravitate towards Lion, Kage, Sarah, Wolf, Akira, and I'm taking a quick shining to Eileen as well.
