Has it? I haven't been paying attention to NeoGAF in the past few days, if so sweet. Are we talking about the light cycle or disc throwing game?

Both arcade games - Tron and Discs of Tron - have been announced, with pics. Theres some big pics a few pages back.

And I retract my Apogee / Epic mention, since they didn't do much worthwhile till the '90's.

Both.

I still don't get his clues though. I can't think of anything important from the 80's except for Atari-like type games, which are cheap quarter crunching games.

The only reason I'm hoping for some sort of PC game is that he mentioned that this announcement surprised him. I don't know why some old revamped 2600 game would necessarily surprise anyone, but again IGN.

Updated Wasteland, yes. I'd get seriously excited about the release of any decent old PC game on XBLA, but I doubt it (although Incredible Machine says hi, I suppose).

Mmmmm at the thought of Tyrian or One Must Fall 2097 remade in HD.

Which makes me think of all the other games i was playing in the early 90s; Jill of the Jungle, Duke Nukem, Jazz Jackrabbit Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure, Secret Agent, Bio Menace, Duke Nukem II, Monster Bash.

Maybe we'll see a re-release of the original duke nukem to match DNF's release..... :lol

And Doom doesn't?

I don't think the rights owners to those old PC classics care much. PC gaming was pretty nische back then, and those games won't be able to pull Smash TV numbers or whatever.

That's not to say I wouldn't like to see many, many of my old PC faves on XBLA, but as we've seen time and time again in this thread -- if people don't have a nostalgic connection to an old game, their knee-jerk will be to go "lol old games lol" and they won't even try the demo. So it doesn't really matter how fantastic they are.

Sweet justice that is awesome. Oh the fist fights I would get in with my friends for being asses in the light cycle game.

Ah I see. I thought you were implying it was an arcade game that was also a PC game. Hence the reason I could only think of Tron and Star Wars. If it is just a PC game from the 80's there are tons of games that could fit the description on IGN.

EDIT: right, right. think I neglected Doom b/c of its various console iterations.

80s PC games?
Populous, Life & Death, Savage, Battle Chess... that's all I can remember. Hopefully the 360 is capable of rendering them in amazing CGA/EGA technicolor.

I guess it could be Speedball 2, right?

It's the Oregon Trail remastered, I'm calling it. Oh the team killing in XBLA that is going to go on when hunting or attempting to ford the river. No group will ever make it to Chimney Rock alive.

There really isn't any other PC game in the 80s that had much of an impact. Oh I know there were plenty of gems out there, but the IGN girl said its "one of the most important games from the '80s". I wouldn't even consider OT that. Maybe Sim City, that did come out in 89.

Was Myst from the 80's?

(Also, is "Hilary" the IGN girl you're referring to?)

No, that was 90s. I don't think there were any CD games in the 80s.

And yeah, that's where the quote on this mysterious announcement came from. She also said they'd announce it Monday morning. So we should know in under four hours.

That's a man, baby.

Correct. Sherlock Holmes: Consulting Detective was released in 1991, and offhand is the first game I remember being on CD. There may have been something before that, but I doubt anything that couldn't have been on floppies.

I'd really assume that the game will be an arcade game.

Or maybe River City Ransom (released in 89 in Japan).

There's also the possibility that Hillary is just ignorant and thinks Old = 80s, and the game is actually from the early 90s.

There were a lot of things planned - and even a few things developed - but nothing that actually saw release.

Anyway, if this game isn't Carrier Command, I'm going to cut myself. On the steps of IGN.

PC/Apple games I'd like to see enhanced, XBLA ports of: Archon, Choplifter, and Lode Runner. With the possible exception of Lode Runner, I don't know that any of those games meet the "one of the most important games of the 80's" criteria, though.

I don't understand. Why is it free? There has to be some terrible catch...

The game must be a bug-ridden, slopfest worth 0 MS points.

Or MS wants to give Gold members a reward for their membership and entice others to sign up for Gold.

The first PR mentioned that it was free to XBOX Live Gold and Silver subscribers.

Does anyone here know what the hell Hilary over at IGN is talking about? He says that a new "classic game" will be announced today. From his description I'm guessing an old PC game.
Its no longer the morning. Where's the announcement?

There ya go.

UBISOFT ANNOUNCES PRINCE OF PERSIA® CLASSIC

The Original 1989 Prince of Persia Game Gets a Next-Gen Makeover

Today, Ubisoft announced it will be releasing Prince of Persia® Classic on Xbox LIVE® Arcade early summer. A remake of the 1989 Prince of Persia game that was lauded as THE game that started the platforming genre features the same intricate level design, exciting swordplay, puzzle solving, and storyline from the original. To freshen the gameplay experience, new traps, puzzles and enemies have also been added. Prince of Persia Classic for Xbox LIVE® Arcade will have an ESRB rating of "T for Teen.

Yet another game that was spoiled by the ESRB. Anyway, I think the most shocking thing here is the distinct of Backbone/Digital Eclipse.

Also, the screenshots.
