Has there been ANY word on Bionic Commando Re-Armed? There was a new Bionic Commando trailer on the marketplace this morning that I downloaded and watched four times. I want Re-Armed :(

No, not yet, anyway:

E308: Uno Rush 400MS points, has pricey theme packs

Posted Jul 15th 2008 9:00AM by Xav de Matos

If the Xbox Live Experience trailer is to be believed, Uno Rush already has a price-point nailed and downloadable content in the works. While showing off the new dashboard update in quick marketing video during the Microsoft Press Conference the Uno Rush menu is displayed and reveals an asking price of 400MS points for the game and 800MS points for an something called an Uno Rush Theme Pack. 800MS points for an Uno Rush Theme Pack? We don't know what could possibly be included for that price but if we had to wager, Geddy Lee is going to hand deliver the pack to each person on a disc himself. Now that's value!

Of course, these prices haven't been confirmed as of yet. So, stay tuned.

E3 XBLA: IGN Hands-On Preview of Castle Crashers

E3 2008: Castle Crashers Hands-on
Better save your Microsoft Points for this one.
by Nate Ahearn

July 15, 2008 - Some developers have a keen understanding of what it takes to make an awesome Xbox Live Arcade game. Take Namco Bandai for instance. They remade Pac-Man to near perfection and look to be on the right track with Galaga. The folks at Behemoth, creators of Alien Hominid, also have a great knowledge base for how to deliver a cool and simple game that still has plenty of depth to keep players locked to their couch. Castle Crashers, their latest cartoonish creation, looks to be moving in a similar direction with awesomely simplistic hack-and-slash gameplay that's deepened by RPG mechanics and some classic arcade-style multiplayer.

For those that don't know, Castle Crashers is a title that we've been looking forward to since 2006. Thankfully, based on my hands-on time with it at this year's E3, it appears that this little gem is almost ready for release.

Bring the whoopin'.

There were three modes for us to try out: Arena, All You Can Quaff, and Castle Crashers. Arena is a never-ending flow of enemies and is a great place to sharpen your combat skills, or those of three of your friends who can join up. All You Can Quaff is a button-mashing eating contest mini-game with four contestants competing to eat as many pieces of meat and fruit as possible by tapping X and Y.

The Castle Crashers mode is the real meat of the game, as you'd expect. Players choose from one of four characters. There's a green guy, a blue guy, an orange dude and a red one to round out the mix. Each has its own magic specialties. The blue knight specializes in freezing enemies in a block of ice while greeny has the ability to unleash a deadly gas cloud that infects enemies.

When you're not casting magic against your foes, you'll be wielding different weapons like swords and maces. The combo system begins simply enough with three taps of the X button bringing three quick attacks. Throw in a press of the Y button and the animation changes, causing a bit more damage due to the heavier attack.

The real kicker to Castle Crashers is that it's actually rooted in plenty of RPG elements that fans of the genre will instantly recognize. Every downed foe yields an experience point boost and leveling up expands your list of combos. I was only able to get to level 3 in my time with the game, but my character had already unlocked a flying swirl attack and a sprinting move. Apparently magic is also expandable but I didn't get to check that out for myself.

I did get to experience the interesting juggling attack mechanic and a boss battle that featured what can best be described as a Trojan Ram. Essentially enemies piled into a massive wooden ram (the animal) who then marauded his way around a portion of the level, spitting out baddies for you to fight along the way. I then discovered that the jumping swirl attack that I unlocked actually let me keep enemies in the air a bit longer than I was expecting. As it turns out you can stay airborne for as long as you're attacking a foe. There were times when I'd gather up two or three enemies at a time, reigning blows as I glided along.

Arrows abound!

There are also animal orbs that can be found on the battlefield and used to your advantage, but I didn't get to try them in my demo. The other disappointment was the fact that Microsoft had only one controller setup at the kiosk. Castle Crashers is clearly a game built on the idea of delivering a similar experience to the X-Men and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle arcade games of old, but those were at their best when playing with friends. Crashers does support up to four players for all of its modes, so why not take advantage of it?

The graphical style is another aspect, aside from the deep yet simplistic gameplay, that will grab you. Looking at the characters you'd assume that they're cute little avatars but as soon as they engage in battle you'll see that things aren't so cuddly. Heads are lopped off and blood shoots everywhere, all the while my little character is smiling back at me. It's very similar to the slightly dark Ren & Stimpy cartoons, not to mention Alien Hominid.

With four different characters that have different abilities and attributes that can be built up, Castle Crashers looks like it'll pack some serious bang for the proverbial buck. I've got my fingers crossed that it makes it out this fall, but whenever it's released, I'm betting people will realize that it was worth the wait.

Awesome price but puzzle quest has always been a handheld game for me, love the PSP version. Hopefully one day there will be an iPhone version.

XBLA Summer: "Our Best Content Lineup Ever"

One of Microsoft's many XBLA evangelists was live on E3 Live on Gamespot (thanks to being on the road with glitchy internet, I missed his name) talking up the "best content lineup" on XBLA ever and told the world that all these games would be out "by the end of the summer." And more specifically he said, "in the next two months."

- Lode Runner
- Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved 2
- Braid
- Castle Crashers
- Galaga Legions

Holy crap if all those games really come out within the next two months. Castle Crashers, Braid, FUCK YEAH.

That actually sounds pretty damn cool if your league is all in your hometown and run on EA's site. I'd probably spring 5 bucks for it, but my main fantasy league is pretty widely spread, geographically speaking, and has been hosted on Yahoo forever (and now that they maintain a level of league history, will remain there)

Castle Crashers and GeoWars 2 are instant buys for me, CAN. NOT. WAIT!

Also I have been replaying OmegaFive again for the ++ modes and scoreboards, one of the best games on xbla right now.

Seems like Bionic Commando: Rearmed fell off the face of the earth. I haven't heard anything about that game in a long time. At least I have Geometry Wars 2, Castle Crashers, Galaga Legions and Braid to entertain me.

E3 2008: Braid Hands-On

Enter a world that will leave you puzzled. And happy.
by Hilary Goldstein

July 16, 2008 - Taking risks isn't the norm in the games industry. Most publishers play it safe. But there's one section of the industry where creating games outside the norm isn't as risky, because the development isn't nearly as expensive. Xbox Live Arcade is slowly becoming home to new experiences. One of the most unique games coming this summer to XBLA is Braid.

Developed by Number None Inc., the 2D side-scroller Braid looks on the surface to be a platformer. That's not really the case. Braid is actually more of a puzzle game. Each game world is comprised of roughly a half-dozen levels. But getting through a level is almost always an easy task. You can pretty much sleepwalk through the levels and get to the end of each in under two minutes. But you're not really accomplishing anything by getting from one end to the next.

That's because the real goal in Braid is to collect the puzzle pieces scattered throughout the game world. When I say "collect puzzle pieces," I don't mean to suggest that you hunt the world hoping to stumble onto collectibles. These pieces -- up to three in a given level -- must be earned.

The main character has one very notable ability -- he can rewind time. Miss a jump and fall into a pit of fire? Hold X and you can rewind your way back to safety. For the first world, this is just a matter of saving you from your own poor timing. But things get unbelievably complex as the game progresses. But let's stay on the first world for now. This simple world is easiest to gather all puzzle pieces. After all, you're just learning the basics. But there is one tricky part that showcases the brilliance of Braid.

In one level of each world you will find a puzzle board. You can go to this board, hit B, and then arrange your collected puzzle pieces to form a master work of art. But in the first world of Braid, the puzzle also affects the game world. There's a serving tray in the puzzle, but it also acts as a platform when you exit the puzzle and run around the level. To get to one of the puzzle pieces, separated by a gap too far to jump, you need to place the serving tray puzzle piece low enough for your character to jump on. When on the platform, leap up and hit B to enter the puzzle-building page. Move the platform higher. You'll land on it again, now at a height where you can bridge the gap and get the final puzzle piece.

As I said, things get a whole lot more complex the further you progress in Braid. Each world adds a new twist to your powers. One level allows you to create a bubble that slows time, using the Y button. Anything that enters the bubble slows almost to a crawl, even your character. Why do this? You may need to slow incoming cannonballs to safely get through an area or slow a moving platform so you can get onto it. Another world has you creating ghosts of yourself when you rewind. The actions you take before you rewind are then replayed by the ghost. This plays into puzzles, as you'll next have your ghost pull levers while you run to another area of the map, for example.

The puzzle elements of Braid are fascinating. The challenge to collect all the puzzle pieces is going to be too much for some, but the satisfaction of figuring out how to acquire some pieces will be worth any early frustrations.

Braid's artistic design is as imaginative as its puzzles. The whimsical world looks like a painting come to life. And the gnomish enemies that roam the levels look like something born from a child's dream.

Braid is beautiful and challenging. And it's coming this summer. Anyone who enjoys having their brain taxed should test their mettle against Braid.

X3F Preview of Geometry Wars 2

http://www.xbox360fanboy.com/2008/07/16/e3-08-geometry-wars-retro-evolved-2-hands-on/

We just got a chance to play one Xbox Live Arcade title that we knew about heading into E3 and the one XBLA game this blogger was most excited to get his hands on, Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved 2. Bizarre Creations takes the ever enjoyable GeoWars formula and brings it into the multiplayer realm, ratches up the graphics and adds new game modes that'll satisfy. Click towards the break to read our hands on impression of Bizarre's geometry arcade shooter. W00tz!

Gallery: E308: Geometry Wars Retro Evolved 2 (XBLA)

Geometry Wars 2 is broke up into six different game modes, Evolved (just like the original GeoWars with the addition of new enemies), Timed (score as many points as possible within' a certain timeframe), Waves (the orange enemies game as seen in PGR4) as well as the newer game modes King, Pacifism and Sequence.

In King, the goal is to rack up as much score as possible, but players can only shoot once inside a protective, circular "hill". These hills protect your ship from all enemies and enables your ship's shooting abilities. What makes it difficult is the fact that the hills will disappear after a while and respawn at another place forcing the player to try to make his way through the ever increasing enemy ships to another hill. A weird, but totally welcome switch on the GeoWars formula that "just works" and is actually one of the most entertaining game modes to play.

Another gamemode we found both challenging and enjoyable was Pacifism, whose name and overall tone were taken from Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved's achievement by the same name. In Pacifism, players are restricted from shooting where the goal is to make your way through moving gates. So, how exactly do you kill enemies? See, once a player passes through a gate the gate itself explodes killing all enemies in the area. This, in turn, ends up creating a type of cat and mouse dynamic. We actually had the most difficult time playing Pacifism probably because it's the most different of the rest. Not being able to shoot is totally unexpected in the GeoWars universe, but it too has its merits and has a welcome spot among the new game modes.

Thanks to some inquisitive questioning, we were given an exclusive preview of the sixth game mode Sequence. This one is actually pretty simple, because all a player has to do is kill all the enemies that spawn. The difference between it and Evolved is that Sequence goes through various stages where pre-defined enemy patterns and sequences spawn. So, Sequence brings predictable (yet challenging) enemy spawns to the GeoWars universe and, for that, we'd say that it's actually our least favorite game mode if we had to choose. Sorry Sequence.

Other than the new game mode additions, seriously improved graphics and the addition of multiplayer (where each ship has it's own sexy look), Geometry Wars 2 looks to be sticking to the GeoWars script. Which is a good thing with the added benefit of giving enough gameplay variety within' the six modes to allow every player to find their favorite GeoWars experience. We can't help but love it.

Bionic Commando Rearmed was playable at E3 for sure though, they were talking about it on Giant Bombcast (2nd E3 episode).

You think that is bad, 1942: Joint Strike is coming out next week (Thread coming this Friday)
and Capcom really, really seems to be disinterested in the game.

Some Shred Nebula info from the developers, posted over at SRK

While not a true fighting game, keep in mind this is a game made by myself and Dave Winstead - hardcore fighting developers of for over 15+ years each and games like SFII Hyper Fighting Arcade, SSFIIT Arcade, WeaponLoard, etc. under our belts. So please do not flag us for posting here, this is our roots and the game was made with these roots thru&thru.

In fact each ship in multiplayer has 100% unique weapons and abilities unlike your traditional deathmatch. Weapons can counter each other along with Reflects (thrust block/parry system), dodges and more. While this video is super short, I hope that it gives you a solid glimpse of how Fighting Games and the Fighting Genre we all love can influence something as simple as asteroid style physics based gameplay and turn it into something crazy, deep and fun.

No it is not coming out tomorrow (sorry- see my official release here www.djamesgoddard.com). Really bummed, but the good news is a full very high profile roll out will happen instead of just showing up on xbla.

Music: Yes, that is music from the game. We have a lot of music and audio that is equal caliber. The game is amazingly only 85 megs.

Q&A- Engine? We built this from the ground up with our own tech called the RAK ENGINE (Roaming Arcade Killer Engine). It was build the same way I have designed fighting engines and the ships (AI & Player) were script programmed exactly like fighting characters or adventure fighting characters found in Dave & my previous products (Weaponlord, 10th Degree (not released) Buffy Xbox/all slayer engine games), etc.

The cool & crazy thing is that all the tech and art you are seeing was done by all 1st time game developers- some of which were interns and graduated during the process! Dave Winstead did most of the fx (art and programming them) would be the only visual things done by a veteran (and Dave is not actually an artist, but super talented in this dept).

Sounds good. Quite interested in this one, after seeing the video.

Well, the key word there is by, as in Microsoft has pledged to release a number of big titles by the middle of September, which is the end of Summer. So we could see a Lode Runner or Castle Crashers in that month or we could see one of the big games as early as next week.

The Behemoth always has a big presence at Comic Con and will be there next week. I doubt Microsoft would throw them a bone and release it with 1942 just for the sake of Comic Con, but I wouldn't be surprised to finally hear a release date.

Well, at least these games are now out of the way of the XBLA Summer of Excellence, personally, I wouldn't be too shocked if the first big game showed up two weeks from now, Double D Dodgeball got bumped up two weeks after all.
