Japan Xbox Live rankings are out, and the XBLA downloads are quite surprising!

This is for Mon 21 - Sun 28, full version downloads only (i.e. no demos):

1. - Shotest Shogi
2. ↑ Triggerheart Exelica
3. ↓ Soulcalibur
4. ↓ Ikaruga
5. - Go! Go! Break Steady
6. ↓ Bomberman Live
7. ↓ Ticket to Ride
8. ↓ Golf: Tee it Up!
9. ↓ Uno
10. → Puzzle Quest

And as far as I know, Shotest Shogi only went up on Saturday, right? So it's notched up quite a few sales in those two days. Also, Triggerheart looks to have leapfrogged Ikaruga -- last week Ikaruga was at 2, THE at 3. Schizoid and Mr. Driller gone :(

I'm buying ALL the recently-dated titles (GeoWars, Galaga, CC, BC)... they're all really, really fun. Galaga was a big surprise at E3... I almost dug it more than GeoWars 2. :D :D :D

Well, looks like the following XBLA games are on the chopping block thanks to Activision. Sierra Online was one of the biggest supporters, but apparently they won't be around for longer...

1) Cribbage
2) Interpol
3) Gin Rummy
4) Red Baron Arcade
5) Vigilante 8 Arcade
6) Zombie Wranglers

(as well as Assault Heroes, Red Baron Arcade, Switchball ports for the PSN crowd)

I believe Gin Rummy, Interpol and possibly Cribbage are pretty much done now. Would be foolish not to release them at this point. More interesting would be to look at all the titles being worked on by Wanako, Atomic Elbow, and others devs Sierra worked with in the past and see if those are still coming. But given the way XBLA games are selling (ie. they are not), it wouldnt surprise me if everything died.

Zombies!!! coming to Xbox Live Arcade???

Hopefully that's enough punctuation in one headline for you. Apparently an eager gamer had sent in some ideas and concept on how to turn their Zombies!!! game, which pretty much keep them rolling in brains and entrails, into an Xbox Live Arcade title, and was told "that they were already underway with this very project." We decided this was something we needed to look into ourselves, give our love of tabletop gaming.

We caught up with Todd A. Breitenstein of Twilight Creations in the extremely slim booth congregation at Comic-Con's gaming portion and he said, "I can neither confirm nor deny the existence of such a project... but do you think it would be cool?" A tile-flipping game was an escape from ravenous zombies plot? Heck yes, we would. While we enjoy getting our game on in Catan, Carcassonne, and even Ticket to Ride, we'd also love to see some good old-fashioned killing of the undead happeing as well. Maybe they could even include their flipside game Humans!!! in the deal.

Valve would 'love' to see its older titles on XBLA

In an interview with Official Xbox Magazine UK, Valve's Doug Lombardi revealed that the company will "certainly consider" bringing some of its older titles to Xbox Live Arcade. With Valve already bringing Portal: Still Alive to XBLA, it would certainly make sense for Valve to look at placing its older titles on XBLA. Lombardi seems to agree, noting, "We'll certainly consider it. If you look at what we've done on Steam, we try to make all our games available and we're always reviewing the prices to keep them current." He added that Valve would "love" to bring it's older titles to XBLA but that "Portal: Still Alive is our first step at doing that beyond the PC." Lombardi also reiterates Valve's current strategy of working with the PC and 360 saying, "Right now, Valve's doing PC and 360 stuff, so anything we would iterate on would be on Xbox. We don't have any immediate plans to do this on PS3 or Nintendo."

Can anyone say Counter-Strike?

Not at that price, sorry.

What if it is actually worth that price though? I think that if we want to see higher quality titles on XBLA and PSN then we need to be willing to pay an extra couple of bucks.

How about Valve give TF2 some serious support on 360? Give it the updates the PC version has.

Plus dedicated servers wouldn't be a bad idea either.

Bungie or Microsoft needs to release a version of rocket-race from halo 3 for xbla. They could build it from the ground up with courses and tracks more suitable to the game design than the maps from H3 multi. Throw in powerups, speed-boosts and different weapons and I think it could be a hit.

Just an idea. I would buy it.

Super Halo Kart Racing!

What an awful idea.

Yeah, this idea is terrible. Only reason people play that mode is for cheap XP.

Well it's not as if XBLA is full of fun racing games. And people will buy anything branded with halo...anything.

And as far as cheap XP goes, for a long time i would only play rocket race because it was the only mode in halo that was actually fun. I don't care about XP at all. I guess if you love playing the shotty-snipers all the time halo could be tons of fun for you, but sometimes i like the more laid-back approach of rocket race.

Now, time for some bad news, work on Quake Arena Arcade has officially been suspended, at least I think that is what this article is saying.

Next-gen Quake Arena game shelved
News by Tom Bramwell

Id Software is no longer planning to create a new, next-generation Quake Arena game after the launch of Quake Live.

"We did decide for a lot of reasons that we wanted to just push hard for doing Doom internally," technical director and co-founder John Carmack told the audience at QuakeCon 2008 this week.

"The door's not completely shut for another Quake project, and I would say that probably the success of Quake Live will determine whether we do another Quake project," he said.

However, "right now the publishers aren't all that interested in a multiplayer-focused game on there," he said, "and they're probably right. Quake for this coming year is Quake Live."

As for what a next-gen Quake Arena might look like on multiformat, all Carmack would say was: "It would have to be a 60Hz fast-action game."

Last year id Software announced that it was creating a second core development team that would begin by creating Quake Live - then known as Quake Zero - as a browser-based, stat-tracking, free version of Quake 3 Arena.

The plan had been to then push that team towards a new Quake Arena title, but Carmack's comments at QuakeCon 2008 put that project well on the back burner.

Well, at long last a new Xbox.com Splash page has arisen, and as we all hopefully all know by now, that means this game is up for release real soon, probably this week.

In a "Status Update!" over at Ska Studios' little corner of webspace, Mr. James Silva finally posted update news regarding the development of XBLA title The Dishwasher: Dead Samurai. In his update, Silva tells us that Dishwasher has a "million, billion bugs" that are in the process of being squashed and that he has locked in Dishwasher to a super solid 60 frames per second. That isn't all, Dishwasher will be native 1280x720 resolution, will include a new (and hellza difficult) ranked story mode and showcase some newly prettified blood staining effects. Jump over to the Ska Studios blog to get your "dishwasheriffic" The Dishwasher: Dead Samurai game update.

Geometry Wars 1? Nah. Geometry Wars 2? Oh hell yeah.

I tried to add you a few days back Gowans (for Geo Wars 2) but it said you had a full friends list... have you got a spare space for me now?

Does anyone here buy their MS Points over marketplace or xbox.com? I realllllllly want Geo Wars 2 but I've heard stories from people who have bought them this way, only to have the credit card tied to their account and had issues with automatic billing for XBL gold, even though they didn't want it.

Anyone?

I buy my points through the marketplace directly but I have three credit cards on there and the main one is like four years old and expired so Im not sure about the Gold live auto charge. My experience on live with my credit card has been great sans the bullshit on not being able to remove them unless you call which I did when I sold my old 360 and they said they would be removed but they never did.

I have my card on file for points purchases, but I also have my Live sub well into the future so they don't bill me.

I really hope Things on Wheels is out this week, as I'm gagging to try it.

I've been reading Load Inc's blog and they have been taking the feedback they received from Mad Tracks to try and make this game the best they can. Including considering how to make the best trial, and also getting a few fans to make achievements.

Hopefully they've managed to pull it all together and offer a much improved game over their effort last year.

I'm waiting for some ACTUAL footage of TOW before getting excited. Though certainly they're doing everything the right way in terms of promoting it, getting the Xbox.com forum up early etc. I still need to see some actual footage with 8 players online before making any presumptions.

Much like Golf: TIU and Mad Tracks though, it's almost a guaranteed success for them, really. People want Kart-esque racing game. Give it to them and they'll eat it up. That's how 3D Golf and G:TIU went so well, and how so many puzzlers have died in the arse.

Hopefully TOW will be locked to 60fps. The weird juddery framerate of MT was a bit dodgy.

Either way, with Gripshift now on XBLA, it has strong competition.

http://www.gamerbytes.com/2008/08/rtype_dimensions_coming_to_xbo.php

The Australian classification website has just updated with a whopper of a scoop - 'R-Type Dimensions' is coming to the Xbox Live Arcade!

From what we can gather, the game is being published by Microsoft themselves, and not title creators Irem, who recently released R-Type Tactics to the PSP. The game is being developed by Tozai Inc, who are also currently working on the fantastic looking 'Lode Runner' for Xbox Live Arcade.

Will it be a new version of R-Type, or a variation of a previous title? It will be interesting to see how this pans out. Surprising how the Xbox 360 has become the platform of choice for these kinds of games.

Also rated this week were 'A Kingdom for Keflings' as well as the first of anything about 'Penny Arcade Episode 2', which we should see more about at PAX.

I bought it last night. I am really disapointed regarding DLC for Arcade games. First it was Puzzle Quest, that add too little for the high price tag (it took me less than five hours to beat the new campaign).

Now Ticket to Ride. The DLC is really only a software key, the content is already in the normal download. I did enjoy a lot the original game, but not so much the Europe expansion. The new map is nice, ferries are a good implementation that requires trains, but i feel that tunnels are just lucky random routes. And stations made the game too easy because you do not need to fight for a route. Again, if it was like 200 pts I would not complain, but 600 pts is pretty stepy for this expansion.

Well, it is official, Braid is 1200 Points
