This is a dumb sentence.

Do you realise how many indie games Microsoft has published on Arcade? Everyone always tries to make out Microsoft as being the bad guys, but they have picked up no end of indie games for XBLA. Some have bombed, some have been successes, but it's not all about making money off every game. Some will lose you money, but those are the games that help to expand the market and attract new games, and ultimately mean you will make more money in the long run.
Fair enough... perhaps I should have distinguished between indie and "risky". There are a lot of indie games on XBLA, sure, but many of them came from moderate success on the PC or fall into fairly traditional genres. Braid is a little less of a known quantity.

I'm not saying Microsoft is just going to quit taking on risky projects after one failed game, but they have to cater to their base to some extent. A failed game will make some impact, even if it's not immediately noticeable.

old?

Hi there!

Just dropping by with a quick update on Pirates vs. Ninjas Dodgeball. The Blazing Lizard developed, Gamecock published title is scheduled to become available for download on Xbox Live Arcade on September 3!

In the last couple of months the folks at Blazing Lizard have been hard at work adding in a slew of new features, like:

The option to have more than one ball in play – In single player, choose to have from 1 to 5 balls. In online multiplayer, the number of balls in play is determined by the team size (from 2-5 balls).

Traditional Dodgeball mode – This is old-school dodgeball with the field split down the middle. Characters cannot use special moves, and are automatically forced back to their side of the field if they cross the line.

Enhanced Dodgeball mode – This mode is similar to Traditional Dodgeball mode except characters can use special moves, and if you cross the middle line, you’re given a three second countdown before being forced to drop any balls in your hand and return to your side of the court.

All that as players choose from 4 teams - Pirates, Ninjas, Zombies and Robots – and battle it out in large, beautifully rendered arenas. Teams will consist of up to 4 players, each with a unique special move, back-story and personality. Players can also get close to opponents and use combat moves to gain the edge in the ultimate dodgeball experience.

That's a colossally huge "if" that almost never comes to fruition in standard economics.

I think its quite obvious and clear that more people are hesitant about buying Braid, than ever before for ANY XBLA title. Sure, using the forum as evidence is shaky, but I garner that forum posters do represent a good chunk of XBLA users, as MS has done a poor job of promoting it to the average user.

You tell me to read what Blow wrote and then you selectively choose which of his writings fit your argument. Read the part where he discusses how Space Giraffe probably lost money despite being priced at the bare minimum.

I think that's something we can all dismiss, considering how SG fared in its reviews (it was a love it or hate it game), whereas Braid is universally acclaimed.

This universal acclaim has been fundamental in selling the game despite its high (in perception) price.

There is not some magical infinite pool of consumers to draw from that grows exponentially based on price, there are people interested in paying for a certain type of game and then there are ones that are simply not interested at any price.

There's clearly a 3rd category, people who are interested in the game but do not want to spend that amount on it. There are some questions that high prices raise, such as the game's longevity, whether it has online multiplayer, and whether the game is fun enough to warrant paying a high price.

I fear that this 3rd category is quite large.

What I think should also be considered is that people look at anything higher than a $10 game as an investment. And that's what causes the fence-sitters to be fence-sitters. If they see the appeal in a game that was $5, these people wouldn't hesitate to check the game out. If it was a bad purchase, then it's only $5 lost.

"People that are in the market for quirky downloadable puzzle-platformers for XBLA" is a small niche and most people that fit into it are informed about Braid, what it offers for the price, and consider it a fair value proposition. There are still fence-sitters within those ranks, yes, but the notion that they would be prompted to jump to action over a $5 difference and immediately offset the profit disparity is a fairly unlikely bet, they would be a slow burn at best. The possibility of a price drop to cater to that end and renew interest more effectively is probably the better option as far as lengthening the long tail goes.

I think your reasoning is perfectly sound. And I agree about setting up the price so that it could hit a pricedrop to increase slagging sales is a good thing. I think where we disagree on is in regards to the fence sitters. Personally I think the number of fence sitters is rather large, and if it weren't for the unanimous critical praise the game was getting, it would have been much, much larger. Had this game faced Space Giraffe-esque reviews (ie. some loved it, some absolutely hated it), it would take a lot to convince someone to spend 1200 pts on it.

This is one game where I think there is a lot of appeal to the game, but when factoring in the short length, and the "high" (again, its about perception) cost, you're going to have more fence sitters than any other XBLA game (well, we'll see if Castle Crashers hits 1600 or 2000 MS pts).

I might actually be interested in that jigsaw puzzle game. I'll tell my step mum about it too - which will annoy my father, because she'll take over his 360 :D

It took a lot to convince someone to buy Space Giraffe at 400 points.

After playing Braid, I'll definitely check out the Jigsaw game. It's not like Braid's jigsaw puzzles were challenging, but there was something real fun about unveiling clues to a story, in that fashion. So now I have a positive association with jigsaw puzzles on my tv screen. :P

It would be neat if this Jigsaw game did the same...where you put together a comic book or something so that as you progress, you get a story with it. It would push me to do the next puzzle over and over if the story was good.

It took a lot to convince someone to buy Space Giraffe at 400 points.

For those that dug the demo, it was an easy purchase. $5 is nothing, and if you had a bit of fun with the demo the decision was easy. For those that didn't like it...but saw that it was cheap...they either didn't buy it or sat on the fence thinking that maybe the full version would be better (as the levels progress).

With Braid though...most people love it.

With Microsoft in the midst of its month-long Summer of Arcade promotion, the game publisher gave Xbox Live gamers a good look at its hand for August. And between Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved 2 and the just-released Braid, that hand has thus far proven to be full of aces.

But what about September? Today, CrunchTime Games said that its overhead shooter Shred Nebula would slot into Microsoft's first weekly Wednesday release for the month, touching down on Xbox Live Arcade September 3. Gamers can venture into the nebula for 800 Microsoft points ($10).

The first effort from indie developer CrunchTime Games, Shred Nebula promises to be an experience unique from the glut of top-down shooters already available on Microsoft's online arcade. As per GameSpot's preview of the game from November, CrunchTime Games has drawn much of its influence from the 1997 competitive shooter SubSpace, and the game will feature a variety of weapons and spaceborne craft, as well as single- and multiplayer modes.

Is there any way to get Hexic back if it was deleted from your premium system?

Yes, you gotta call Microsoft Customer Support and go through an elongated process to get Hexic back.

Does Worms have an active online community? I'm sorta itching to spend some spacebux I got at the Target sale, but I'm not going to bother if noone plays.

I think so, considering how much the game is selling.

Yea, those all came from those Team Xbox Previews that I highlighted last week.

Anyway:

All of Dishwasher's crazy modes and 3 player co-op

Mr. James Silva updated his The Dishwasher: Dead Samurai developer blog a bit ago (yeah, it has been a week, sue us!) and has revealed all the game modes that are going to be included in the game. Confirmed for inclusion in Dishwasher are game modes Dish Challenge (a wave after wave, kill, kill, kill type mode), Story Mode and Arcade. And Arcade is rather interesting, featuring various challenges comprised of different modes including Insta Kill, Vampire and the slow motion Bullet Time. Make your way over to the dev blog to read all the game mode details.

Also, for whatever reason, we didn't actually acknowledge the fact that The Dishwasher: Dead Samurai is confirmed to sport three player online story mode co-op! Huzzah! That's like, one more player than we expected. Thanks for that Silva.

Flock! developer worried about XBLA layout, delisting not the only answer

Proper Games, the team behind the upcoming sheep herding XBLA game Flock!, is none to happy about the Xbox Live Arcade's categorization or how it's organized. And even though they're in favor of delisting under-performing XBLA titles, they don't think it's the only answer to the problem.

"Flat-out delisting perhaps isn't the solution" Proper Games CEO Paddy Sinclair told Gamesindustry.biz, adding that "I'd also like to see a way of properly categorising games - what's the most-downloaded game at the moment? What's been most bought?" Sinclair then echoed their and many other developers' fears of being lost in the XBLA mix, admitting that Flock! "could just get lost in the morass of arcade conversions" with how the current system is setup. Hopefully, the massive Fall update and a newly re-structured XBLA will solve Proper Games' and our own problems we have with the XBLA. Do it for the sheep, Microsoft, do it for the sheep.

what happened to the de listing, wasn't it supposed to happen soon? Maybe its been dropped after the bad feedback and release of the new dash/marketplace format???

:lol for a second I thought Minesweeper flags is just the minesweeper app with a giant boarder , so thats just the classic mode ok.

Other modes are just the same on a 3D skin ok, online could be ok I guess but I bet this will be another joke set at 800 points

Okay to post?

Was at the shmups.com forums and somebody with partnernet access got to try out Galaga Legions

8 1/2 said:
Lucky for me, the game came up on Partnernet today so I got to sit down with the trial version and give it a whirl:

My initial impression is that the controls are just god-awful. I don't know what the heck they were thinking here:

RT: Fire (can be set to continuous fire so you don't have to press a button)
RS: Choose the fire direction of your options
LB: Bring your options back to default near you

I can see why the fire is on the Right Trigger if you have to use the Right Analog stick to control the options, but why is the option reset on the Left Bumper? Madness.

Gameplay-wise I can't really say much positive about it so far. I only have access to the trial version, so this isn't a fair review, but the first ten minutes of gameplay so far is uninspired and just plain boring. Enemy patterns are incredibly simple and only the "leader" ships can actually shoot at you. Out of the dozen or so games I played, I think I died once and it was totally my fault. Now, I'm sure it will ramp up, but the rate at which it ramps seems to be so slow that I'm not sure I could really get into it if the first half-hour of play is going to be challenge-free. This is a shmup for the masses, make no mistake, and hardcore players will feel left-out I fear.

The score system seems to be based entirely around shooting down the "leader" ship. Killing the leader also kills the smaller ships in formations around it and the multiplier is based around how many small ships were left when the leader was killed. Before each formation comes out, white lines telegraph their pattern so you can get into position and nail the leader. This has potential, but it ends up making it feel much more like a puzzle game than a shooter. Simply get into position, aim at the leader and soak up the points. Again, this is a trial version so I'm sure it gets more challenging, but damn, it's so SLOW to get going I just don't care to play it much more than I already have.

Graphics are passable but rather ugly, with tons of bloom to hide the simple ship models. It's like a cross between Lumines and a PSone era shmup.

Overall, I'll probably still pick this up, but it's not the series reboot that Pac-Man CE was, nor does it have the content or quality of Geometry Wars 2.

Hmm not sounding good. =/

I mean damn 10 minutes of straight up boringness? Pacman CE games END in half the time!

Huh, I though Namco games bypassed Partnernet, well, I guess we find out next week.

Anyway, an updated to that Carbonated Games news that was talked about awhile back, it appears while there was no official PR about the closure or whatever, it looks like Carbonated was indeed at the very least folded into the new XBLA studio, which has a name by the way.

http://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/f/fable2pubgamesxboxlivearcade/

Indeed, the Fable 2 Pub Games Splash Page has (finally) gone up and development is being credited to Xbox LIVE Productions, which I assume finished development of Fable 2 Pub Games and presumably they are they ones working on UNO Rush.
