Paramount Digital Unveils Gameplay Trailer for Star Trek: D-A-C

Paramount Digital Entertainment today released the first gameplay footage for Star Trek: D-A-C coming soon to Xbox Live Arcade for the Xbox 360, and for the PlayStation Network. The Windows PC version will be available shortly after their release.

Inspired by the upcoming Star Trek movie from Paramount Pictures, Star Trek: D-A-C is a fast-paced, top-down space shooter where players take the captain’s chair and engage in intense online multi-player or co-op battles. Star Trek: D-A-C allows fans to directly control a variety of ships and pitch battles between Starfleet and the Romulan Empire. Up to 12 players can compete in thrilling team combat. There are three game play modes - single player, online multiplayer and online co-op. For each mode, there are three different game types - Team DeathMatch, Assault and Conquest. Players can choose from three ship types for each faction, including the new U.S.S. Enterprise featured in the Star Trek film. Each ship – the powerful Flagship, the nimble Fighter and the devastating Bomber – offers its own unique capabilities for players to master and manipulate as they fight for victory. In addition to featuring the new U.S.S. Enterprise, Star Trek: D-A-C incorporates music and signature sounds taken directly from the new Star Trek film.

It's not Arkanoid without the dial controls. :kittonwyindifferent.jpg:

Dial controls would be nice, but I played through the C64 version with just a joystick. And I'll be all over this version too.

Hollywood Arcade: ‘Star Trek’ Downloadable Game Set For May 13 Release, ‘Top Gun’ Drops Today
Posted by MTV Video Games on 5/5/09 at 5:20 pm.

We take a look at “Star Trek: D.A.C.,” a brand new downloadable game coming to the Xbox Live Arcade on May 13. Also, a brief look at another Hollywood-flavored title, “Top Gun.”

“Star Trek” will be boldly trekking into theaters this Friday courtesy of director J.J. Abrams, but that’s not the only venue the blockbuster sci-fi franchise will be visiting. On May 13, a downloadable game set in the new universe will be made available on the Xbox Live Arcade, with future plans targeting the Playstation Network and the PC.

The top-down, 2D game plays like a suped-up version of the 80’s classic “Asteroids,” with players choosing to fly either the Federation flag or the villainous Romulans. Ships glade across space, targeting each other with phaser beams, photon torpedos and explosive mines, all while dodging assorted sizes of asteroids.

Up to 12 players can engage in combat ranging from team deathmatch to king of the hill, with 6 on each team. If users prefer to fly solo or with less than 12, the computer A.I. picks up the slack, doing a fairly good job at pushing the mission forward. Three classes of ships are available, each with different modes of attack and speeds: the sluggish but powerful flagship Enterprise, a speedy but fragile bomber and a diminutive all-purpose fighter.

But “Star Trek” won’t be the only frontier for Hollywood; a “Top Gun” game is also jetting its way to the iPhone and iPod Touch. Set years after the original film, players find themselves as new recruits under the eagle eye of Maverick and Iceman, now instructors. With a soundtrack that includes a remade “Danger Zone,” the game — one of the first to utilize a 3D engine for the platform — features 10 missions total that have the user dodging missiles and flak and maneuvering to take down enemy fighters with missiles and bullets.

“Top Gun” is available as of today on the Apple app store.

Star Trek reminds me of Star Control (the first one). I will definitely buy if movie is good.

That can't be right. June 29 is a Monday. The only XBLA game that's ever been released on a day other than Wednesday post-X360 launch was Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3. That was only because someone goofed up and accidentally put it on the marketplace the Saturday before it was due.

So I'd say July 1 for XBLA and July 2 for PSN.

Yea, that seems more sensible, the date attached is the one making the story rounds.

Yosumin Live Hands-on
We have a go at this happy puzzle game from Square.
by Erik Brudvig

May 7, 2009 - SquareEnix first dipped its toes into the Live Arcade waters with a port of the iPod touch game Crystal Defenders. Soon it will follow up with Yosumin Live, a quirky puzzle game with a heart of gold. Though there are already a great number of puzzle games on Live Arcade, Yosumin Live is looking unique and fun enough to carve out its own niche.

While many puzzle games focus the player's attention on small areas to match similar colors or shapes, Yosumin challenges us to look at the big picture. The goal of Yosumin is to recognize rectangles on a large grid -- the bigger the better. To clear the tiles, which are each called Yosumin, players are required to find four like tiles that make up four corners of a rectangle. Tap the opposite corners and you'll clear away everything within the boundaries.

As the single player campaign progresses, the difficulty is increased by requiring more tiles to be cleared while new color variations begin to populate the board. Bonus time can be added by clearing out special Goldmin tiles, or big points can be scored by taking out the massive Bigmins. Later in the game, the Wingmin gets introduced. These special flavors of Yosumin can be moved once, allowing for a slight rearrangement of the board that can lead to massive rectangles becoming possible.

Super set!
As with all puzzle games, the concept here is fairly simple and easy to get into. I didn't find much challenge through the opening dozen or so stages, but the happy-go-lucky visual style and goofy music kept me interested in forging ahead.

And then I booted up the multiplayer for a few rounds with fellow IGN editor Dave Clayman. This mode can be tackled with two players, both offline and through Xbox Live. This is where Yosumin really shines. The game begins with players selecting from a small set of Yosumin avatars, each with its own unique special move. My favorite is Goldmin, a fellow who has the power described as "Make the most of a quiet moment." That translates to having a move that stuns the opponent for a short period of time.

Once the characters have been selected, play moves to a big board filled with Yosumin tiles. The same general rules apply, except now two players are pitted head-to-head. By making large rectangles, you can knock time off of the opponent's meter or add to your own. The gameplay is fast and, most importantly, a lot of fun.

Yosumin Live is nearing release on XBLA. Check back with IGN soon for the full review.

Arkanoid is actually $15, 1200 points. Once you download it for 800 you discover the 2nd HALF of the game is another 400 points!!! Lode Runner, now this, these BS pricing schemes on XBL are downright insulting. I'll wait and hope for PSN.

Looking good. I think I will get this, and sell my complete copy of the Genesis game.

The Arkanoid pricing is interesting. On the one hand, you give the buyer options. Many people will never make it past the few half of the levels anyway. On the other hand, it's fairly deceptive how they've listed it. You don't realize right up front that it's not the whole game. Overall I don't see any reason why Arkanoid has to be $15. I don't see much in the way of updating in the demo. Without a paddle controller ... eh. IMO you're better off dropping 200 points on the XNA game Bricks 4Ever, than 1200 on this.

Spent some time with the SI Extreme demo, too. It doesn't seem to have the soul that the DS game had. Not sure what's different, exactly. Maybe it's just the fact that I've played it before. I'm passing on both.

Rainbow Island: Towering Adventure coming to the XBLA

http://www.gamerbytes.com/2009/05/rainbow_islands_towering_adven.php

Rainbow Islands: Towering Adventure, which just got released on WiiWare this week in Europe, appears to also be coming to the Xbox Live Arcade according to the German USK rating board.

This will be the second Taito WiiWare title to be ported to the Xbox Live Arcade, following the announcement of Bubble Bobble Neo! would also be making its way over. The recently released Space Invaders Extreme and Arkanoid Live have also begun to fill up the Taito catalog on XBLA.

While it's unlikely that Space Invaders: Get Even would make its way over to the Xbox Live Arcade, since it has a reliance on the Wii Remote control, it would be an easy bet to assume Puzzle Bobble Wii might also make it over in one form or another.

What should we expect next from Taito? I'm hoping for a new Elevator Action Returns and New Zealand Story.

great article Rlan.

I would love to get your idea after studying this what are the key price points in the long term for what type of content on the services.

Also guys what's coming in the next few months to get excited about? Sure there will be a montage at E3.

Another reason would be that add-on DLC gets easily taken off the list of the list of latest downloadable content, thanks to each week’s Guitar Hero, Lips and Rock Band songs, which are listed individually -- and there's no obvious in-game way to inform customers that The Maw now has new DLC.

From the article.

This has to be frustrating for publishers on Xbox Live. In many cases, some DLC doesn't even appear because it is just pushed the hell out of the way by Rockband and Lips songs.

Rockband and Lips just need stores or pages everytime new shit is out. One new block that says "new RB songs" or something would suffice, not 12 individual ones that push everything off the new arrivals section completely.

I've been saying this since NXE came out.

Just a separate section to place all the music game crap would suffice, to be honest.

Third XBLA Game Coming Wednesday
Space battles, puzzles, and card games this week.
by Daemon Hatfield

May 11, 2009 - Earlier today IGN reported that both Star Trek: D-A-C and Texas Cheat 'Em would be arriving on Xbox Live Arcade this Wednesday. A third title has been added to this week's release schedule – Gel: Set & Match. The puzzle game from Gastronaut Studios (Small Arms) asks players to arrange colored blocks into specific formations.

This is the spiritual successor to Gastronaut's first game, Fuzzee Fever, which was released on the original Xbox. Online and offline multiplayer modes are included for up to four players.

Gel: Set & Match will set you back 800 Microsoft Points ($10).

I'll probably bite on Gunstar Heroes, Sonic 3, Sonic & Knuckles (for the lock-on tech, of course), and Shinobi Arcade (unless that's on the Ultimate Genesis Collection disc), but Sega better put up Daytona USA 2 sometime soon...

So I just played the Lumines demo and loved it. The visuals and music are great and the puzzle mechanic is fairly fresh.

I was going to purchase the full version but than I read that the full version isn't even the full version. Can someone explain this and make a recommendation?

Get it. It's an awesome game. The base pack has dropped to 800 and includes some really fun achievements and of course a great core game. Here is my ranking of the rest from before:
Here's my ranking of the Live DLC from an earlier thread FWIW:

1. Rockin' Holiday Pack (400 for 20 skins)- An incredible pack with several jaw-dropping skins. Also has a few goofy "holiday" skins. If you're thinking of downloading a pack, this is the one to get.

2. Booster Pack (600 for 20)- Not quite as good as Holiday, and certainly not as distinctive, but I had fun with it for a few weeks. Actually I'll probably go back and play through it today just for fun and because it's been a while.

3. Advance Pack (22)- Do they still sell this? I thought it was a tad boring, worth it for the true fans but otherwise maybe a pass.

4. Vs. CPU Pack (11 for 300)- A couple of decent skins and some really rotten ones (last level lol). The CPU is dreadfully easy to beat though. I had fun with it for a few hours.

5. Tokyo Club Mix (4 for 350)- Blech, I really don't like anything about this one. They also butchered Heavenly Star.

Rest: I don't play much Puzzle/Mission so I can't comment on that pack. Be sure to d/l Heavenly Star (free!), one of the better skins.
