It's been a long time since a brand new exclusive XBLA game release (not ports of old games, remake, or old franchise). Is there any exciting new IP coming (like Braid, Castle Crasher etc)?

Rocket Riot will be out next month.

I've played it today and it's loads of fun.

Grin Praises XBLA/PSN, Dislikes Submission Process

CEO Bo Andersson and Creative Director Ulf Andersson of Sweden-based Grin spoke with Develop magazine about the challenges in releasing digital content to Microsoft’s Xbox Live Arcade and Sony’s Playstation Network.

Grin Praises XBLA/PSN, Dislikes Submission Process

According to the interview:

Develop: Your colleague Per Juhlen has recently implied that there are a number of challenges in releasing digital content, despite assumptions to the contrary. Care to elaborate?

Ulf: It’s still much easier to make digital games on the PC than it is with XBLA and PSN. With the consoles’ online platforms, Sony and Microsoft have their own rules and regulations to follow, and you have to have a pretty robust QA session to get your game out there. That’s something which smaller independent developers run into. They may have a small, effective team that can make a great game, but they could run into problems when testing their content. And with so much QA, the costs suddenly go up. Put it like this: for five guys making a game, you’ll ideally need 25 people to properly QA the thing.
Microsoft and Sony demand such extensive testing, and their quality checks are not dissimilar to AAA retail games.

Bo: Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. But it is a barrier. That’s what independent developers have to consider before making a game for PSN and XBLA. You can’t just think “oh we’ll have the code done by this many months and the graphics by this many months and we’re done." Submission will take up a third of your time, and QA will take up a big chunk of your time as well.

Ulf: Starting QA very early, and having one QA guy active on your team throughout the project would be my advice.

Develop: Digital distribution continues to gain prominence. What do you think needs to be done in order for that system to flourish?

Bo: I think Sony and Microsoft can help developers more with the QA and submission process. That system needs to be easier, more accessible and less of an invisible cost. But generally speaking, the PSN and Live platforms are good at the moment.

Ulf: It’s really nice that, whoever you are, you can get the same sort of attention with the interface. I don’t think the big publishers can muscle their way in for more exposure on the platform; it’s a level playing field. That promotes quality.

Develop: As an independent developer, are you interested in Sony’s Pub Fund scheme?

Bo: It’s a good initiative. It’ll definitely get the attention of a lot of independents. Sony is gunning the right way with it if they want to be competitive, and of course they want to. I don’t at all see it as being harmful to the market. It’s a cool idea in this climate.

Develop: And would you be interested in it? Would you mind console exclusivity?

Bo: We would absolutely consider it. Pushing technology hard in one direction, to one system, is something that we’ve always enjoyed. Grin is a company that can run several paths at the same time, so I’m not saying that we’d want to put 250 on a single project all at once.

Ulf: But it would be cool though! That would be some project right there.

On Capcom-unity blog, they say Bionic Commando: Rearmed is on sale for 400pts in Europe today ( and starting 25may in US )

I think its PSN only, according to the email I got

To celebrate the release of Bionic Commando on May 22 nd, Capcom is pleased to announce that the digital download title - Bionic Commando Rearmed – is now available for a limited period* from the European PlayStation Store for only £3.99/€4.99**.

A 2-D side scrolling shooter, Bionic Commando Rearmed is a reworking of the original 8-bit title with brand new visuals, weapons and music plus the addition of 2-player co-op and some fiendish Challenge rooms. Players completing certain sections in Bionic Commando Rearmed will be rewarded by unlocking items in the full 3D sequel.

Edit: I mispoke

Xboxers, don't fret. The XBLA version of Bionic Commando: Rearmed will also go on sale on LIVE for 400 starting on May 25. Lucky Europeans actually get to take advantage of this price drop today.

I want this game so badly. I even have a quote on the official web page. It was getting tons of praise from the gaming press and then it just disappeared for almost a year. I hope it gets the attention it deserves when it finally gets released.

Pre-E3 2009: Battlefield 1943 Update
http://xboxlive.ign.com/articles/981/981825p1.html

May 14, 2009 - When you first see Battlefield 1943 you'll likely assume it's a new retail release. But this is a downloadable first-person shooter headed for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. The 3D game is simply stunning for a digital release. It's light on features compared to a disc game, though: included are three multiplayer maps, recycled from the seven-year old PC game Battlefield 1942. That's all you get, but they should provide plenty thrills for your online multiplayer sessions. Plus, Electronic Arts will be making announcements about downloadable content, soon.

Battlefield 1943 lets players fight alongside either the U.S. Marines or the Imperial Japanese. Up to 24 soldiers can join a game (12 on 12) and the three maps are quite large. Battles will rage across the islands of Wake, Iwo Jima, and Guadalcanal. There are three different classes to choose from in between spawns: scout, infantry, and rifleman. The choice only determines what weapon you start with, and any gun can be picked up once in a game. Battlefield 1943 also lets players climb into vehicles such as tanks and planes to deal out heavy destruction.

This is what an XBLA game looks like in 2009.
The only game mode is Conquest, where players attempt to take control of the enemy's territories. Like your typical game of capture the flag, merely standing near the enemy's flag will initiate an acquisition. Kills also push your team to victory. Players can expect games to last around 15 to 20 minutes.

This will be the first time these World War II Battlefield maps are available on consoles. They're powered by Battlefield: Bad Company's Frostbite, engine, however, bringing all of that game's environmental destruction to these classic arenas. Trees can be shot down and buildings aren't safe hiding places from tanks.

Shooter fans will definitely want to check out this most impressive downloadable effort from DICE. You can return to these Battlefield islands next month.

Alright! I've wanted this for a while. What are the chances they'll release it for the proper price of 400 points? My guess: slim. I'd really like to play it with a controller on my big TV, but it's a touch sell at 10 bucks.

Shard, is there any legitimate reason why Doom II isn't on XBLA yet? Is it a publishing rights thing? The first one sold well enough, right? I can't see any real reason for the hang up.

Activision have previously been quite slow on the uptake for XBLA. They did DOOM then Shrek & Roll, and last year did Vigilante 8 and Golf: Tee It Up. This year we know that they're doing Wolfenstien 3D and Call Of Duty 1 (which would also be their first XBLA and PSN release)

They might be FPS'd out by that point. They've very very slowly getting onto Virtual Console though with Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure.

Is Star Trek shit?
It's not bad. It's very "pick-up-and-play" style. For an online game, I really enjoy it and it's one of the few multiplayer games I actually seem to be decent at. I just wish there was more variety of ships, instead of just fighters, bombers and flagships with two opposing sides. It would be awesome if they threw in Tholians, Klingons, Cardassians, etc. into the mix, each with unique capabilities. Hopefully, they'll consider this in DLC.

They are also working on a game called Transformers Origins. The reason Doom II is not on the XBLA, I have no damn idea, FInal DOom has been rated for ages and yet we still don't have more Doom.

http://www.developmag.com/interviews/477/YORKSHIRE-PROFILE-Team-17

The company found its fame on the Amiga platform, creating classic games such as Alien Breed, Superfrog and the title that built the empire – Worms.

Although often seen as just being the Worms company, Team 17 has long been working on external IP – most recently on a next-generation version of Leisure Suit Larry, called Box Office Bust, formerly for Vivendi but now to be published by Codemasters.

As well as continuing to evolve Worms on contemporary platforms, the studio’s current main focus is a reinvention of the classic shooter Alien Breed, brought kicking and screaming into the current high-definition and online co-op world.

“We’ve been trying to convince publishers about a PS2 or PSP version of Alien Breed for years now, and we got very close, but it never happened for various reasons,” says studio head Martyn Brown.

“We’ve had a 15-year relationship with Epic, so we’ve used their engine to do our own thing, to release our own digital distribution title. We’ve taken the core game but taken a much more modern and evocative take on it. It’s a bit like Diablo 3 meets Dead Space.

“It’s coming out in chapters – the game is in three chunks, each kind of a standalone game, with about five hours of gameplay. We’re probably about five months from release.”

At a time when many companies are trying to release their digital games on as many networks at possible, Team 17 has a definite preference for Microsoft: Alien Breed will initially only be on XBLA, and while Microsoft’s service is getting a sequel to Worms, PSN is merely getting an update of the original title.

“We get a lot of support from Microsoft, so we’re releasing with them initially,” says Brown. “Worms has done enormous numbers on Xbox Live Arcade. The PSN version will be interesting – a lot of the games on PSN tend to be experimental; there’s not that many ‘solid’ games out there. So we’ll see how that goes.”

Despite being less than 90 people, the studio is working on over 10 SKUs currently. How does it manage to work on so many things at once?

“We’ve been around a while, so we’ve got really mature technology. There’s maybe 20 or 25 people working on Alien Breed because we’re using Unreal. It could be treble that if we weren’t using UE3, so that’s pretty efficient. The internal tech for Worms has been around for years, so it’s only been four or five guys on the PS3 version, maybe 10 on the Xbox Live Arcade one. And two guys on the iPhone version.”

But the real story for Team 17 is how it’s embracing the digital space – it predicts that its current Worms titles for the PSP, DS and Wii platforms might be the last physical products it ever makes.

“We’re really embracing the digital space. It’s absolutely more promising for us – the industry’s only going one way. I don’t think it’ll be that long before it’s all digital. Plus, it means we can self-publish as developers. We had six years of publishing in the retail space in the early nineties.

Things were different then: it came to a point where more money was being spent on marketing than development, so we backed out and have stayed developers for about ten years. With digital platforms the marketing isn’t such a big deal – it’s kind of there in front of you, so it seems the right time for us to re-enter that.”

Third XBLA Game Coming Wednesday
Space battles, puzzles, and card games this week.
by Daemon Hatfield

May 11, 2009 - Earlier today IGN reported that both Star Trek: D-A-C and Texas Cheat 'Em would be arriving on Xbox Live Arcade this Wednesday. A third title has been added to this week's release schedule – Gel: Set & Match. The puzzle game from Gastronaut Studios (Small Arms) asks players to arrange colored blocks into specific formations.

This is the spiritual successor to Gastronaut's first game, Fuzzee Fever, which was released on the original Xbox. Online and offline multiplayer modes are included for up to four players.

Gel: Set & Match will set you back 800 Microsoft Points ($10).
Just a heads up that Gel is now due out THIS Wednesday (May 20th).

That's basically the same as a sales number. You don't get ranked on the leaderboards unless you have Live Gold and you bought the game.

You can easily be on the leaderboards with a silver account that didn't even purchase the game.

Workman Says Things: The Ship, Bust-A-Move Live! To Download Services
bustaship.png

Industry sleuth Ron Workman, known to many as one hint at upcoming games, has revealed with "100% certainty" that The Ship and Bust-A-Move Live! will be released for digital download on HD consoles.

Bust-A-Move, also known as Puzzle Bobble, is said to be coming to the Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network. Previous WiiWare titles like Bubble Bobble Plus! and Rainbow Islands: Towering Adventure have been revealed to be coming to Xbox Live Arcade and now it appears Puzzle Bobble Wii! might be as well. While the Live! subtitle works against it coming to the PlayStation Network, Ron suggests it will be.

The Ship was a great multiplayer game for the PC that used Valve's Steam Engine -- a completely different experience to anything else out there. The game had you as one of many on a ship and in each round you are given someone to kill. The catch being they don't know who is out for them and you don't know who is out for you. You have to kill the other person while not being seen by other players or by the police, and you had to find an array of weapons by searching through draws and cupboards in the ship.

It really was a fascinating title which unfortunately does not have much of a following online anymore. Developers at Outerlight have been seen playing Hollywood Murder Party, presumed to be the sequel, and Ron Workman also says it will definitely be coming to the Xbox Live Arcade and might be coming to the PlayStation Network. To add to this thought we've noticed one of Outerlight's developers mention themselves as a Xbox 360 programmer on their Twitter account.

Fuck, arkanoid live was a bust. So much potential, and it's overpriced with shitty maps. Over half the maps are mostly golden blocks where you just end up trying to make the ball into a gap one brick wide over and over again. Bullshit.

Yah I'm annoyed at myself for buying Arkanoid. It certainly gives off a good first impression, with the cool techno music and stuff, but you are so right about the golden blocks bullshit. Not fun, at all.

I should make it a new personal rule not to buy anything from XBLA until at least a week after it has been released. Then I can use other people's opinions to help with purchase decisions.

That's what I'm saying. These games should be fairly easy to port to the platform and should connect with a fair amount of the shooter-loving 360 audience, for the right price. I'd pretty much buy all of those games. I would also love to see System Shock 2 and Half-Life added to the list. But I think SS2 is in pub rights limbo, and I doubt Valve would ever bother farming an XBLA HL out to anyone. Now, if they actually picked up HL: Source for distribution ........
