Shatter XBLA Likely
The wild brick-breaking game could very well bust out of the PlayStation Network.

We love Shatter, the manic brick-breaking game exclusive to the PlayStation Network. Pretty much the only way we can think of to improve it would be to make it available on other platforms so that all gamers can enjoy. Speaking with Gamasutra, Sidhe's Managing Director, Mario Wynands, revealed that Shatter is already up and running on Xbox 360 and PC and that a port is probable.

"We have always had a very platform agnostic approach, but have moved quickly when opportunity arises. Shatter is not exclusive to PSN, but Sony is offering the combination of good royalties, strong technology, and a well defined process for getting content to market. PSN was an ideal first landing place for Shatter.

"We haven't ruled out any other platforms at this stage.

"Our tools and technology are very cross platform, and we have also ported PhyreEngine to the 360 which we used for GripShift XBLA. We already have working builds of Shatter on PC and XBLA but are reviewing the situation to see whether it makes sense to continue investing in those versions to bring them to completion and release them.

"So far, it is looking likely we will bring the game to other platforms."

Sidhe is currently working on a demo for the PlayStation Network version of Shatter.

It's funny how the primary shmup platform is always the one that's doing the worst. :lol

PC Engine, Saturn, Dreamcast, Xbox360.....

I honestly think shmup developers enjoy being niche.

Lower licenses fees. Those devs know that their fan base is very loyal and would buy any system to play the games, so it is a matter of selecting the plataform with lower development costs to maximaze profit.

So the PS3 is doing so bad it doesn't even register as a current generation console?

I hope you guys realize he's talking about Japan. It's totally true. I mean, considering the fact that most shmups are released only in Japan, with no foreign releases, and all 360 games in Japan are region locked, it's obviously about the Japanese market. There, the 360 is last place.

So if it's just Japan (which seems odd in a XBLA thread since all these shmups will be released outside of Japan), shouldn't the Xbox replace the Dreamcast as "doing the worst" out of the four sixth-generation consoles?

Yes, I was talking about Japan.

"PC Engine" should have been a tip off....

And it was also just a generalized observation. You guys are wound way too tight.

No online and NO ORIGINAL MUSIC for Bubble Bobble? NO SALE.

If you mean the original BB tune, a new version of it is there when you play the classic mode. Arranged and Versus modes use different music.

I bought Bubble Bobble last week (off the Japan store) and it's basically the same as the Wii version that came out a few months back, only with the new versus mode and without the arranged mode being widescreen. The lack of multiplayer online does kinda suck, but it's still worth the purchase.

Yup.

Command & Conquer Red Alert 3: Commander's Challenge coming to Live/PSN.

With a recent leaked list of achievements it has been revealed that Command & Conquer is coming to the Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network with Red Alert 3: Commander's Challenge.

Based on the achievements this is a port of the previously Windows only expansion Red Alert 3: Uprising. It too was only released digitally through EA's store and Direct2Drive. The game consists of 4 mini-campaigns of 3 to 4 levels each and a 50 level Commander's Challenge mode. The game also features plenty of HD video of the Commanders, so it will also likely be a very large file size when released.

The expansion however has no online play - it is entirely single player, and it looks like it will stay that way for the Xbox Live Arcade version. The game has been rated on the ESRB with mention of a PlayStation 3 version, so it is also coming to the PlayStation Network.

There has been some commotion about the announced Command and Conquer 4 will require a online connection. Perhaps this is a look at how a digital only version will work for for the console space.

Raystorm HD is great and all but it's not RayForce. Y'know the superior-in-every-way-prequel-that-unfortunately-looks-rather-shit-in-HD? Well whatever.

I'll buy this anyway to show my support of the genre and Taito.

One day they just might get the bright idea to slap a Darius game in there(like Gaiden with the auto-fire fix).

Haha this is truth.

It may be Rayforce/Galactic Attack/Layer Section/Gunlock lite, but I'd say it's way more suitable for an HD update, in that the original PlayStation RayStorm had lots of screen tearing and slowdown issues. This is a game that needed a new coat of paint.

RayForce is completely perfect and needs no improvements. In fact, it would look better in a Saturn on an old CRT than it would ever look on an HD display.

Seeing this game in perfect 60FPS with graphics so clean you could eat a steak off them, well, that's going to be a sight to behold.

OH HEY, while we're at it RayStorm HD isn't these games either: DoDonPachi, Mushihime-sama, Muchi Muchi Pork, Chaosfield, Radirgy, Border Down, Guwange, Dangun Fever, Dragon Blaze, Gunbird, R-Type, Gradius, Darius, DeathSmiles, Radiant Silvergun, Batsugun and many many other awesome shmups.

However, it is RayStorm HD. That's pretty cool after all, ain't it?

Console Arcade have a Raskulls interview, and that image I grabbed from Destructoid:

I would do terrible things for a Zero Gunner 2 port.

Wikipedia says Bubble Bobble Neo was cancelled for North American release on XBLA. If that's true, that's sad. I love Bubble Bobble. :(

Protip : never trust Wikipedia. Gotta love the blurb regarding the "cancellation", though :

Wikipedia said:
The North American Bubble Bobble Neo release was cancelled on August 7, 2009.[citation needed] The developers cited numerous reasons for the cancellation including difficulty in meeting localization deadlines set by Microsoft, and the apparent lack of interest in the franchise outside of Japan.[citation needed]

Yeah, poor guys at Taito could never meet Microsoft localization deadlines for friggin' Bubble Bobble. Especially considering the demo from the JP marketplace is in the language you set your console to.

You sir are in for a treat. It's a great title, really underrated IMO. In a parallel universe, these characters are Mario & Luigi.

MEGATON
Speaking on the Gathering of Gamer's Podcast, Ninjabee's Steve Taylor dropped a few hints about the company's upcoming Xbox Live Arcade project. In addition to an update and DLC for A Kingdom for Keflings, Taylor says Ninjabee is working on a game created by the same team that was behind Cloning Clyde, one of XBLA's earliest original titles. While he doesn't give specific details about the project, Taylor does say that "It's more of a spiritual successor to Cloning Clyde" than any other game Ninjabee is working on. Furthermore, the game will have the same designer and creative director, John Nielson.

According to Taylor, an official announcement should be made "hopefully, within a month."

Pay $1 to Make Mega Man 9 Harder

http://xboxlive.ign.com/articles/101/1013552p1.html

August 12, 2009 - Released last October, Mega Man 9 is a retro platformer 11 years in the making. New DLC was released today for the game that might entice some fans to boot it up again. "Superhero Mode" can now be downloaded for 80 Microsoft Crazy Points ($1). The content makes the game harder by increasing the amount of enemies you'll encounter.

We've heard of buying cheats to make a game easier, but now you can pay Microsoft and Capcom to make your life more difficult. Superhero Mode adds no new achievements and is not compatible with leaderboards.

Behemoth Game #3 Details

http://xboxlive.ign.com/articles/101/1013438p1.html

August 12, 2009 - We've known Behemoth (Alien Hominid, Castle Crashers) is working on its third game for about six months now, but besides an early demo shown in Japan back in March we haven't gotten our hands on it. The developer has posted its first in a series of videos on YouTube showcasing the various features and mechanics of the game, and this initial installment focuses on a mode called the "Soul Game" (working title). Behemoth's video reveals a few new details on this mysterious project, so far known only as Behemoth Game #3.

This is a four-player collection of various platforming challenges that could be described as mini-games. Previous Behemoth efforts included a lot of unlockables and customization and the developer wants to continue that in Game #3. Before starting a match players can customize their avatar's head. The game lobby is its own platforming area with the different game types waiting behind many doors. In the video Behemoth chose a door labeled "Constructory" and initiated the Soul Game, in which players each have one soul and must try to steal the souls of the other team.

Expect lots of unlockables and customization, as in the first two Behemoth games.
As players run and jump around the environment, exploding blocks appear and disappear in certain locations. Touch one and the burst will slow you down. We know of two weapons that will be available: grenades and frisbees. The music heard in the demo is very reminiscent of other Behemoth games.

At the end of a game, your score is represented by the length of your characters' legs – the tallest is the winner. Behemoth promises a good story will go along with all this mini-game action.

We'll have more on Game #3 from PAX next month. Until then, check out the developer's video diary over on YouTube.

Panzer General: Allied Assault is an all-new single and multiplayer digital card game that takes place during the last phase of World War II, from 1944 to 1945.

Panzer General: Allied Assault is an all-new single and multiplayer digital card game that takes place during the last phase of World War II, from 1944 to 1945. The dramatic events of D-Day finally gave the Allies a foothold on Fortress Europe, allowing them to push the Germans back to Berlin. Players can recreate actual battles such as Utah Beach, Operation Market Garden, and the infamous Battle of the Bulge in the hopes of turning back the German tide. Build, customize and fight with your personalized deck of 60 digital cards. History is in your hands.

Ranked as one of the top 50 computer games of all time and quoted by PC Gamer Magazine as "Criminally Addictive”, the Panzer General franchise has spawned a loyal following of dedicated fans eager for more turn-based strategy action. This all-new strategy game title comes after five successful releases under its belt.

Key Features:

* CARD GAME MEETS BOARD GAME: Thanks to the Collectible Card Game mechanics, players can swap out Unit Cards in decks for the perfect mix of tanks, artillery and infantry. Add in special Action Cards to "break the rules” and surprise opponents with air strikes and reinforcements. Players can retool decks with new cards awarded after each single or multiplayer victory.
* A TASTE OF HISTORY: Panzer General Allied Assault lets players dive into the history of World War II. 3D models of vehicles used during the War march across the board and players can discover the cities where desperate battles took place. It's a new and exciting way to learn history.
* PLAYER V. PLAYER (PVP) MODE: Players can play with a friend and have access to the special Unit and Action Cards you have unlocked in the single player Campaign. The more you play, the more cards you unlock!

Ubisoft's Panzer General: Allied Assault, developed by Petroglyph, is scheduled for release in Fall 2009.

So there's no way to get the Japanese version of Bubble Bobble? I was really looking forward to it.

You can set up a japanese account and download it from their marketplace. You'll need japanese Microsoft points, though. And yes, the game will work even with your USA/Euro/whatever account.

Behemoth's Game#3 just does not look very good at all. If it wasn't for Dan Paladin's great artwork, their games would rightfully be looked at as shallow trash. They just aren't very good at game design at all.

"Maybe we should slow the player down if they have all the souls?"

Yes, no fucking shit sherlock.
