That comic jumper trailer was awesome. Did some of you catch the comic parodies during part 1:40? I saw a powerpuff girl imitation and something that looks Will Eisner inspired. The other ones were kinda generic or I just did not recognize them. Cannot wait to see actually game play for it.
Looks to be parodies of Sin City, PPG, Dark Knight Returns, Spawn, Savage Dragon, and... I can't really tell what the other is lampooning.

I don't know where the fuck you're seeing Will Eisner, unless you're somehow under the impression that Frank Miller's The Spirit was an accurate representation of Will Eisner's The Spirit, which it definitely the fuck was not.

No just some of his graphic novel work like "a contract with god" and "life force" had that great positive/negative background foreground thing going on. I guess I was confusing that sin city cover with one of his works, he was one of the first graphic novel artist I read so I might mistake a lot of other artists work with his. Funny enough I never did read any of his spirit books.

Also that shank game looks intriguing.

Anyone at PAX check out the XBLA games?

Downloaded a lot of demos this morning. I am inclined to impulse-buy quite a few games, but that $10-15 range is "just" high enough that I get the feeling I won't be buying nearly as many games as I would if they were just $2 or $3 cheaper.

The trick is to accumulate inordinate amounts of discount points when you see a sale or there's a free online giveaway, and then burn through those buying all the things that aren't quite worth it.

Well, I bought Trials HD this morning and played for 6 hours straight. One of the best games i've played this year. Amazing. I completely forgot about watching football, the game completely sucked me in.

Yeah it's awesome isn't it.

The extreme levels though :( They shouldn't have limited time and tries, stupid design decision IMO.

Thats why im a sucker for 400 pt games. Have a bunch of them. N+ at 400 pts was maybe the best purchase ever.

Hmmm, I don't know, if you can't pass a track with less than 500 faults (or in 30 minutes) then you simply lack the skills necessary to pass it (and are counting on pure luck). If anything, the fault limit should probably be lower.

Sure, it's my game though and it's pretty frustrating to get 90% of the way through a level and to then have to start again. At this point I just want to finish the extreme levels.

I played Dawrwinia+ and Serious Sam HD. They've translated over from the PC pretty well. I've played Shank and it might be worth it for the eye candy alone. Probably the most stylish downloadable game at the show. It is also a very competent beat-em up in the vein of The Dishwasher. I played the N+ devs' racer and I while it was early I see a lot of potential.

Once you hit 30 min/500 faults, you are stuck in a rut and need a fresh take on the level. Ever notice how when you take a break from a level, then go back to it later you do much better? That's how it works for me anyway.

Love N+, I played a ton of it on DS.

What other good $5 games are there?

Marble Blast Ultra is the only one I can recommend in good conscience.

That said, Puzzle Quest is going to be discounted to 400 and is TOTALLY WORTH IT at that price if you've never played it before.

You are right but I'm the type of person who when it gets too much goes and wipes my save to stop myself playing a game again. I just want an option for people who suck (like myself).

Yeah Puzzle Quest should be a no brainer once that's down to $5, very addictive game. Still one of xbla's best. Otherwise there's Marble Blast, Assault Heroes, tmnt and Geo Wars 1. I'm probably the only one who still plays the first Geo Wars way more than the second

If you like Hot Shot Golf style arcade links games, check out the Indie Games Easy Golf or the sequel Avatar Golf. They're similar but AG is a bit of an upgrade on gameplay in addition to letting you use your avatar in-game.

I dipped back into DooM earlier and finally beat a level on episode 2 I was stuck on, now to continue!

I have never beaten any chapters from doom apart from the first original one so from here onwards everything is new to me, despite playing the game to death on pc and psx (mostly doom II) years ago.

Shank PAX trailer, very awesome stuff indeed;

http://xbox360.ign.com/dor/objects/14348979/shank/videos/pax09_shank_gmp_090509.html

Wired preview as well;

http://www.wired.com/gamelife/2009/09/shank/

SEATTLE — That one guy is totally about to shank the other guy. In the face. It’s not going to be pretty. Well, actually, it’s going to be very pretty.

Shank, the upcoming new game from Eets developer Klei Entertainment, is very early in development, but it has a pretty big presence here at PAX anyway. And why shouldn’t it: It’s a promising game that blends Saturday morning cartoon animation with gratuitous melee violence and classic gameplay. Perfect for this crowd: If you didn’t know better, you’d think it was designed by the Penny Arcade crew themselves.

Shank takes some of its gameplay cues from the side-scrolling beat-em-ups of the past; you won’t be surprised to hear that you walk to the right and pound on everything that’s not part of the background. Or that all of these things have cute names that show up above their life bars. What you’ll be surprised with is the smoothness of the gameplay. By pressing the various attack buttons in whichever sequence you dream up, the main character will begin a smooth, free-flowing combo attack that incorporates everything he’s carrying, from knives to chainsaws to guns.

You can also grapple with enemies and certain objects. Pressing the L trigger will cause a situation like the above, where Shank leaps into the air and attempts to land on an enemy and stab him brutally in the eyeballs. (For the record, it’s not going to work in this particular situation — you’ve got to puzzle out another way to beat Toro here.)

Pressing the R trigger brings up one of those Double Dragon situations in which he’ll grab an opponent’s hair, holding them in place for another beatdown.

Your enemies aren’t just punching bags, though. During my demo they attacked me pretty relentlessly, so you can’t just mindlessly slam on buttons — you have to watch out for them, and attack when the moment is right.

Shank’s animation, both in the cut scenes and the game levels, is absolutely gorgeous. If the full game, which promises a more varied set of levels (it’s not just set in the Old West as we saw in the demo), can keep up this level of excitement, this will be a treat for owners of the… of the…

2u8fey0.jpg

…well, this is what the demo unit looked like. What could be in there? Klei hasn’t announced a platform for the game yet, so you’ll just have to wonder which of those three controllers I used to play the demo.

:lol

Sonic & Knuckles Dated and feature's revealed

Sega has announced that the classic expansion to Sonic 3, Sonic & Knuckles, will be hitting Xbox Live Arcade on September 9th. The good news is that Sega will be including a few unlockables for the game, providing that you own the XBLA ports of the first three Sonic games currently available now.

Each of the previous games unlock the following as Bonus Features:

* Sonic the Hedgehog: Unlocks the game “Blue Sphere,” the bonus/Chaos Emerald level from Sonic the Hedgehog 3
* Sonic the Hedgehog 2: Lets you play as Knuckles, complete with the ability to get to previously inaccessible areas of the game, and new power-ups added for playingas Knuckles
* Sonic the Hedgehog 3: Play as Knuckles in Sonic 3, and also changes the flow of the game and connects it directly to Sonic & Knuckles, so that you can play the two seamlessly!

It’s good news about the expansion features working the same way as the stackable cartridges from the old days of Genesis/MegaDrive, but pricing has not yet been confirmed.

Just saw the Twisted Pixel game and Shank trailers for the first time...

PAX 09: Doom II XBLA Hands-On

September 5, 2009 - Nestled in the back of Bethesda's PAX booth is an old friend: Doom II. But unlike most old friends that always look a little worse for wear after 15 years, Doom II has aged gracefully. The high-res face lift sure didn't hurt. But lest you think the developer taped over all those old memories of blasting pixelated demons in the chest, know that Doom II does not shed its roots. All you have here is a sharpened take on the first-person classic.

Doom II includes all of the classic episodes as well as a brand-new one created specifically for Xbox Live Arcade called No Rest for the Living. I gave this new episode a turn, trying out two different maps: Earth Base and Pain Labs. The difficulty was juiced up to the Hurt Me Plenty setting so we got a solid amount of monsters in the map – I wanted to not only get a decent challenge, but also see if there would be any slowdown. The report: zero chug. According to the developer, different difficulty settings not only result in different monsters, but also different locations for the beasts.

Though Doom II includes traditional single-player and deathmatch, I wanted to give the new co-op mode a try. With another player, we tore through packs upon packs of monsters while hunting down keycards to open doors. The thrill of wading into a room and opening up with a shotgun is a fun throwback. And the co-op stuff reminded me a lot of the days of futzing around with creating LANs in Ye Olde Days of PC multiplayer.

The maps are loaded up with secret areas, too. The meds to unleash Berserk Mode are tucked behind false walls. The chainsaw weapon is located in hard-to-reach chambers. And fans of the double-barreled shotty will be ecstatic not only to see its return, but also hear it. Even with the din of PAX swirling around the booth, I could hear make that that satisfying "cha-chunk" of reloading this weapon after dropping a demon to the floor.

Doom II is currently on the calendar for the holiday season with November written in pencil. We'll have much more on Doom II in the near future.

PAX 09: Quake Arena Arcade Hands-On

http://xboxlive.ign.com/articles/102/1021860p1.html

September 5, 2009 - Bethesda's PAX booth is home to two upcoming Xbox Live Arcade shooters. Each is a familiar face: Quake and Doom. Quake Arena Arcade arrives this holiday with 45 total maps, including 15 brand-new ones built specifically for the XBLA release. The remaining 30 have been taken from Quake III: Arena, which remains a fan favorite with a still-loyal following.

Quake Arcade Arena is pretty fast, but the booth attendant did note that the game has been slowed down a touch for console players. While giving the game a whirl, I was reminded of the speed setting for the Dreamcast edition. The slightly slower pace is designed to help compensate for the console controllers, which I know so many players still claim in grossly inferior to a mouse and keyboard combo. I'm not so sure. I didn't seem to have too much trouble chewing people in half with the shotgun or ripping through some skulls with the lightning gun.

In my demo, I played on one of the new maps. There were plenty of corridors to fill with bullets as well as jump pads that launch you over open areas where you can usually insert yourself into a skirmish by means of rocket launcher. The map seemed just the right size so you never went more than a few seconds without running into another player, but at no point were we just on top of each other.

A price for Quake Arena Arcade has not been settled on. A release date is not firm either, although the team is dedicated to getting this game on XBLA sometime during the holiday season. Warming your hands on a hot Xbox 360 controller while busting open chest cavities with the gauntlet will be so much more preferable than an open fire, don't you think?

PAX 09: Previewing The Behemoth's New Game

http://xboxlive.ign.com/articles/102/1021887p1.html

September 6, 2009 - Castle Crashers was released more than a year ago on Xbox Live Arcade, and the quirky side-scrolling multiplayer action/adventure title still consistently appears in Xbox Live's weekly list of the top 10 most-played games on the digital download service. Thanks to their signature art style, cooperative design and addictive layers of customization and exploration, The Behemoth's games have serious fan appeal and staying power. And it's a good thing, too, because it takes the San Diego-based independent developer a long time to crank out new games, and they usually only work on one project at a time.

But the crew is currently stretching that rule a bit, simultaneously finishing up the PS3 port of Crashers and developing a new title, still only being referred to as Game 3. Throw a huge fan-centered trade show on top of the pile, and you have some seriously busy Behemoths. I caught up briefly with Project Manager Emil Ayoubkhan at the 2009 Penny Arcade Expo in Seattle this weekend, as he manned the Behemoth booth and handed out posters to a line of fans.

He barely had time to tell me what I had already figured out during my time at the nearby demo station: Only a sliver of Game 3 was on display at PAX, and no one playing the game should be expected to have the slightest idea what's going on. Basically, what was on display at PAX was the same demo offered to attendees of the Tokyo International Anime Festival in March, which IGN attended. You can read our preview of Game 3 from the show for our first impressions.

Basically, what's being shown of the title so far is a small slice of the overall experience and not necessarily indicative of the final game. As with the Tokyo version, the PAX demo offers a small selection of multiplayer platform challenges, each with a different goal. As a timer counts down, teams of players move around a pastel environment of blocks, obstacles and enemies, each trying to outscore the other. You can jump on opponents to knock them out, shoot them with ranged weapons like fireballs and flying discs, push them into deadly traps or simply avoid them by taking advantage of well-placed accessories.

What's notable about Game 3, in addition to the classic Behemoth character designs, animations and backdrops, is its apparent theatrical theme. In the demo I played, all the action took place on a stage, with the heads of theater attendees in silhouette in the foreground. At the end of each round, a red curtain draws closed and the audience applauds. Even choosing with stage you want to play takes you into a rectangular cutout filled with static theater-goers.

It could be that The Behemoth is using the theatrical theme as placeholder art for its early public demos of Game 3, but the idea of a multiplayer videogame as theater is an interesting one. Beyond that, there are very few clues as to what The Behemoth is doing with Game #3. A flyer the company was handing out at its PAX booth listed the words/phrases: multiplayer, single player, multiple gameplay modes, character customization, easy to understand, unlockables and play it online.

Good start. Now, how about a title?
