Just played Pinball FX, and its pretty fun, i kind of want to buy it since its only 400MSP this week, but it sucks that the SF table is not included.
Worth noting, there's a free Buccaneer DLC table available in addition to the 3 included.

Just buy the game and the SF table and pretend the game was 25% off rather than 50%. Either way, you get decent savings.

(Although I'd recommend the Nightmare Mansion and Rocky & Bullwinkle tables over SFII, personally)

September 23, 2009 - The Behemoth, the indie studio responsible for Alien Hominid and the hit Castle Crashers, has finally announced a platform for its upcoming Game 3. Previously, no official statement had been made regarding which consoles would see this upcoming title. Today at the Tokyo Game Show, a representative told IGN that Game 3 is officially coming to the Xbox Live Arcade.

But wait, there's more. Game 3 has previously only been shown as a multiplayer game. That same game mode is what is on display at Tokyo Game Show, but the group is ready to start talking about a few more details. There will be a story mode to the game, which can be played offline by yourself if you like. It follows the character with a big top hat, who just happens to be the main villain. He's described as "psychotic" and "always experiencing more than one emotion." This evil-doer has gone off and trapped innocents and it's up to you to free them.

When asked if Game 3 would ever make it to PSN, as Castle Crashers has recently been announced for, The Behemoth told IGN that the only console they can say Game 3 is definitely coming to right now is Xbox Live Arcade.

Toy Soldiers looks fucking fun and Snoopy Flying Ace looks just like a next-gen Crimson Skies (Road to Revenge on the XBOX). Joy Ride looks interesting if only because of the colors and the twisted-looking track...hope its Rush-like shortcut heavy.

Naaa, it's a new game. It's been a long while since I played Fighitng Force, but I don't remember 3D feeling so slow and un-needed in that game, as it does here. Game really seems slow, sluggish, the moves don't snap, the voicework is poor, and I really really hate current gen "lets make everyone look exactly the same!" modelwork like this. Under the red light of the first stage, the charcters looked so similiar that a clump of falling bodies in the corner instantly confused who was your chara.

Watchmen also had a strong "OMG, red light!" opening stage...

It really sucks that Warriors and Watchmen are considered brawlers... they do nothing for the genre on XBLA, and I hope no companies judge how well those games do, to judge if we want things like Simpsons Arcade, Xmen Arcade, Combatribes, Knights of the Round, Guardian Heroes, or Dungeons & Dragons on XBLA. It's sad how much better those old classics are compared to this newer stuff. Castle Crashers is the only new one that REALLY got it.

It's a genre that should work so very well on XBLA...

On Current Topics:

Toy Soldiers: GAH, A TOY based game, and everyone still looks like they coulda dropped out of a Call of Duty game. I wish they actually took advantage of the Toy angle to give us some G.I. Joe looking characters, maybe some aliens and super heroes... and a few transformers. It was great to mis-match action figures when playing with REAL toys as a kid... still looks like a cool game, however.

Snoopy: Woah, this look great. A perfect arcade title, so far... hope it plays as good as it looks. And for the record, I like the slightly blurry look.

0 Earth: This game has... never really impressed me. Squeenix makes an arcade game, and it's a western looking overhead shooter? Bleh. Will of course still try it out, but don't have any hype for it.

Raystorm: Still have it on Taito PS2 collection, but the update to graphics is nice. Will get if I have extra points. New ships are cool too, and help make purchase more worthwhile.

Joyride: Man, those stages actually keep looking really nice. They actually have DESIGN to them, rather than just being dull crags and rocks.

September 24, 2009 - At the advent of the Xbox Live Arcade, Microsoft imposed strict rules regarding how big game downloads could be. If a publisher's game exceeded 50 MB of data, it couldn't be put up for sale. Later, that size limit was lifted to 150 MB. As you may have noticed, that restriction no longer exists. Shadow Complex was nearly 1GB in size while the recently released C&C 3 Commander's Challenge pack clocked in at 2GB. Have all restrictions been thrown out of the window?

The answer is more or less.

In a meeting with Microsoft's Scott Austin, director of digital games, IGN was told that 2GB is the limit now, but that isn't due to any restrictions imposed by Microsoft. The 2GB limit is a technical limitation of the system being used. Games on Demand, a section of the Xbox Live Marketplace where you can buy full retail games to download, uses a different file structure and so that limitation does not exist.

September 24, 2009 - I never thought I'd write the following sentence. Today, I saw a tower defense game that looks pretty darn cool. OK, that was easier than I thought it would be. I'm not the biggest fan of tower defense games. They all feel rather the same and aren't very exciting. If you're like me, or even if you're a fan of tower defense games, then you might want to keep an eye on Toy Soldiers. It's tower defense with a bit of a twist. Announced today at the Tokyo Game Show, this exclusive Xbox Live Arcade game comes from indie developer Signal Studios.

Toy Soldiers is brings WWI action figures from 1918 to life. That naturally means that, while the battlefield looks totally real, you'll actually be playing in a bedroom filled with toy figures set up by a little boy or girl with a vivid imagination. Look through the grainy filter towards the battlefield and you'll see a raging war. Turn your sights up towards the sky and you might see a bookshelf or a desk lamp.

Not your standard tower defense game.
The visuals are quite good for an XBLA game, but they aren't what sets Toy Soldiers out from the pack. This game offers a more active role for the player than most tower defense games. Each round starts how you'd normally expect it to. You'll get a look at which enemies are queued up and preparing to charge your defenses and it will be up to you to set down towers of defense to keep your headquarters safe.

Once things are set in motion, they begin to get interesting. At any time, you can hop in to a tower and take direct control of it. Turrets allow you to aim and lay down covering fire. A sniper tower lets you become the sniper. You can even get in a plane and fly off around the world. And, of course, the whole time the enemy is attacking your defenses so it might be a good idea to upgrade a tower now and again to keep things even.

Toy Soldiers will also have a multiplayer portion to it, which Microsoft jokingly referred to as a sort of tower offense style of game. One side will defend while the other launches an attack. We didn't get a look at this mode, but it certainly sounds intriguing given the active role each player can take during the fight.

There wasn't any news provided on when you can expect Toy Soldiers to release on the Live Arcade, but we were told that it was coming soon -- either by the end of this year or early next.

XBLA @ TGS - PopCap And Square Enix Team Up For Gyromancer

A couple of weeks ago we spoke of Gyromancer, an upcoming Xbox Live Arcade title being published by Square Enix. Now the game has been officially announced, but what surprises us is that PopCap are also involved.

Gyromancer mixes the world of Bejeweled, specifically Bejeweled Blitz, and has created a Puzzle RPG similar to Puzzle Quest. You rotate jewels within a square in order to connect 3 or more together, which allows you to cast spells against your rival.

It does look a lot like Puzzle Quest, but it has a gigantic slap of polish on top of it. It's got all the spectacle of a Final Fantasy game, but in a puzzle setting.

There is no current date set for the game, but I would expect it to come out sometime next year.

We Will Have No 3D Characters!

When we started working on SPLGTDP, I think our biggest hurdle to overcome was the bad taste the early South Park video games left in our collective mouths. They didn't look or feel like South Park with those big headed 3D characters and backgrounds. We wanted to make sure that our return to the world of videos was true to the spirit and style of the TV show.

A lot of time and effort goes into making South Park look crude and sloppy. And after almost a year of production, I honestly think my counterparts at DoubleSix and Microsoft would grudgingly agree. It's a hell of a lot harder than you think to make something look like South Park.

Lucky for us, we already have a ton of content for the game, thanks to 13 seasons on TV. Of course we knew that Stan, Kyle, Cartman and Kenny were going to be the main characters; but there are so many fans out there who love all the secondary characters too. I know, it's tough to admit that Butters, Jimmy, Timmy and Craig are secondary characters, but it's true. We really wanted to find a way to bring all those characters into the world of the game and make it as rich as possible. I'm very happy that there are a total of 15 un-lockable characters in SPLGTDP, including all the ones I mentioned above. The game also features 11 different locations like Stan's house, the elementary school playground and the Great Wall of South Park.

One element of the game that did not exist were the staple of tower defense games. The towers had to designed from scratch. Check out the progression of designs from the very early stages.

These first towers were too hi-tech and have a 3D look that is distinctly not South Park.

We really wanted the towers to look like they were designed and built by the kids using cardboard, tape and whatever was lying around. The storyboard department South Park did some very cool sketches and helped DoubleSix and Microsoft understand the style of the towers. This design inspired the upgraded laser tower in the game.

This design, also by the storyboard department, for a marble or gumball launcher didn't make it into the game, but demonstrates how we wanted the towers to look as if the boys used anything they could find and their imagination.

Many of these towers are in the game, and are a big improvement from the first designs. They also have the "homemade" feel that we were looking to create. You can also see from these sketches that tower upgrades are bigger-and-badder than the standard size to make them easily distinguishable during hectic game play.

We really hope fans enjoy the game, but more than anything else we hope you feel like you are getting to run around inside the world of South Park. And many thanks to the talented artists who swallowed their pride and trusted us when we asked them to "stop making it look too pretty."

Pretty much everyone in the South Park offices is a gamer. So why is it that if you want to play a South Park game you have to break out some obsolete, dusty gaming system from the back of the closet? And let’s be honest, the previous games were disappointing and looked nothing like South Park; obviously the reason for the long drought of new games.

In late 2007, we brought together a very small team and formed South Park Digital Studios. The idea was to create a group of folks who would focus on everything ‘South Park’ but the television series. We expanded into the offices next door, which lets us not only have direct input from the show's creators Matt and Trey, but we also "borrowed" a few long-time South Park employees to run the new company. The digital studio has been working hard to complete a wide range of projects, including the new South Park website (SouthParkStudios.com ), cool new products, and games. Yes, games! We want this to be the first of many new video games based on series.

South Park Let's Go Tower Defense Play! is the first South Park game in over 8 years. Unlike some past games, SPLGTDP actually looks and sounds like South Park. Making this game equal parts fun and challenging was a high priority, and we wanted to give it the unique look and feel fans expect from South Park. Tower defense is a solid and popular genre in gaming, and we felt would be a great platform to bring South Park ‘back to life’ in the gaming world.

We definitely want both fans and gamers to experience something different than traditional tower defense games. This game is a hybrid between tower defense and action. Not only do you build towers like a traditional game, but you also run around and throw snowballs as the South Park kids, acting like a moveable tower. Even better, you can play at home or online with friends. In South Park the boys always enjoy playing video games with friends, so multiplayer support was a must. But we didn't forget the single player, four characters can be controlled by one player at the same time. Whether you are a single player, playing with friends on the same console, or with other friends or fans from around the world, you will have the same great South Park experience.

Toy soldiers WOW!!
Had an HO scale WWII setup in my cellar as a kid. It was about 15 feet by 4 feet with miniature mayhem all around. Didn't look too much different from the trailer.:D

All in all, they're not bad for 10 dollar games, but I think I'm still more hopeful for Nectaris (suppose to come out next week, right?) and Vandal Hearts (is there a set date for this yet?)...

I got my 800 points today from the Summer of Arcade promotion and used 'em to get Tempest and Cyberball 2072.

September 24, 2009 - One of the games announced by Microsoft at this year's Tokyo Game Show carries a well known license. Snoopy Flying Ace is on its way to the Xbox Live Arcade and since it just happened to be out on the show floor waiting to be played, I decided to give it a spin. The basic premise here is Crimson Skies light. You and up to 15 other players take to the skies for some dog fighting, starring planes flown by dogs. Now do you get the joke? Good, then let's continue.

The demo out on the show floor didn't have a whole lot of options to toy around with, so I'm not sure if there is a whole lot of depth here. The basic idea is that you fly around a fairly large arena, grab power-ups such as shields or invisibility cloaks, and do your best to shoot down any other planes in your sights. You can pull off basic maneuvers like loops for evasion, or hold down a button for a speed boost. It's best to be a little conservative with these trick moves. Even though you play as a cartoon character, there's nothing cartoony about what happens if you accidentally run into a piece of the scenery.

The main draw here seems to be the open areas and 16-player arena fighting. You can play against bots and their artificial intelligence wasn't that bad, but we all know that a great flight combat game is only great when dog fighting with a few friends

Snoopy Flying Ace is a fairly simple game and one that kids could easily get a firm grasp on without much trouble. The pacing is fairly low-key considering the fact that you're supposed to be flying through the air in a plane. The menus were all in Japanese, so I wasn't able to check to see if you can play four players on one split screen. If you can, Snoopy looks like it could be a good game for a family to sit down and toy around with. The "hardcore" element, however, just isn't there.

September 24, 2009 - Square Enix is continuing its Xbox Live Arcade support with a twin-stick shooter called 0 Day Attack on Earth. The aliens are invading Earth and it's up to you -- and perhaps three of your friends -- to launch a defense. Again? Yes. Again. But at least this time your friends can come along for the ride.

The game plays out over a 3D city, though you fly in a 2D plane. This makes the game pretty easy to control. Just point the left stick in the direction you want to go and the right stick in the one you want to shoot. You'll hit your enemy if the aim is right, regardless of whether it is standing on the ground or menacing you by flying at your level. A bit of depth is added with the bumpers, where the left is used for boosting around while the right triggers a screen clearing bomb. The controls and the game's general layout are pretty standard. Nothing about the game -- aside from the four-player co-op – stood out from the pack.


What's more, this one is a bit rough around the edges visually right now. The polygon count is pretty low and the graphical effects are quite underwhelming. The arenas themselves are a decent size which allows you to either stick close to your squad mates or jet off as a lone wolf in search of stragglers. Go too far in one direction, though, and you'll run into a barrier that keeps you trapped in the playing field.

Most of the enemies I faced off against were hulking walkers that took a good five or ten seconds of direct fire to take down. Smaller craft will also be set out after you, and these guys end up being even more dangerous than the big vehicles.

0 Day Attack on Earth is about as straight forward as they come. The real test will come when we get to sit down in a group and really get into the action. I've had a lot of fun with some basic shooters in the past simply due to the fact that they offered a co-op mode. Let's hope this one does the same.

September 24, 2009 - Microsoft has once again put its upcoming free-to-play racing game on display, this time at the Tokyo Game Show. Joy Ride is a game for anybody that likes to spend just a little too much time customizing their Xbox avatars. That's because it is pretty much built as a way to show them off. Whether you're racing, tricking, or simply cruising, your Xbox avatar will always be on display.

Joy Ride is a free-to-play game for Xbox Live Gold members. That means you won't have to pony up a single penny to give it a whirl when it comes out later this year. Of course, not everything about it will be free. The basic game modes and a couple of environments will be free. If you want more -- or if you want to customize your car's look -- you'll have to start spending the Microsoft points.

There will be a few things that you can unlock without paying, though. Microsoft had one of these on display today. The area called "Perilous Peaks" will be unlocked by the community by meeting specific in-game goals. Other modes and prizes will also be unlocked this way. It won't be enough for you to complete a task. The whole community will have to band together to unlock these goodies. A similar stunt was pulled by EA earlier this year for the XBLA game Battlefield 1943 with great success.

Our demo of Joy Ride consisted of a quick ride through Perilous Peaks and a rundown of the different game modes available. At E3 when we last saw Joy Ride, the only mode on display was a simple race. This go around we got a look at a stunt mode (where you can earn experience points to level up) as well as a delivery dash and a collect-a-thon called Coin Frenzy. Grab enough coins and you'll be able to spend them on a few customizations for the game.

The basic gameplay of Joy Ride is kept quite simple. You can drift around turns, pop wheelies, and take massive jumps, but it's pretty much impossible to crash and burn. You'll simply bounce around and get right back to riding in style. The only way to "lose" is to fall off of a cliff and even then you'll simply find yourself back on the platform you fell off of. This is most definitely not a game about punishment. Rather, it's looking to rope in a few gamers that might not want to spend a lot of money or invest the time in one of the more hardcore racing games like Dirt 2 or Forza 3.

September 24, 2009 - People keep plunking down their coins for more old-school shooters on the Xbox Live Arcade, so Microsoft keeps signing deals to bring more of what the fans want. On the horizon is RayStorm HD, a glammed up remake of the PSX shooter RayStorm. The gameplay isn't being updated on this one, and when you get right down to it the graphics hardly are either. Suffice it to say, if you love RayStorm or top-down shooters, this is one you'll want to watch out for.

RayStorm began its life as an arcade game from Taito back in the mid-1990s. It soon found its way to consoles, with the most notable US release coming courtesy of Working Designs for the original PlayStation. The game met with generally positive praise (hit up IGN's original review to learn why) though this isn't considered a timeless classic like some of the other shooters of its day.

This updated version doesn't claim to change anything but the visuals. Even those are merely spruced up versions of what you would have seen on the PSX. It looks rather bland by today's standards and it's quite clear even after just a little bit of play time that a lot more could have been done to earn the HD suffix that has so callously been applied.

But hey, the gameplay is advertised as unchanged, which is either good or bad depending upon your love or hatred of the original RayStorm. You'll fight across eight stages (it was always a brief game) with a few different types of G-RAY fighting planes at your disposal. There are several different weapons to choose from, with my favorite being the lock-on laser that allows you to paint a target across the enemy patterns as they appear and then watch the bullets fly and home in on your prey. Combos and point bonuses ensue.

This release of RayStorm includes both the original Arcade Mode and the Extra Mode, which was developed for consoles and helped to flesh out the story a little and made the game tougher.

No official price point or release date has been announced for RayStorm HD.
 
XBLA @ TGS: Gyromancer Hands-On Preview

September 24, 2009 - Two major, but perhaps unlikely, forces in gaming are teaming up to bring you another puzzle game with RPG elements. Square Enix has formed a giant Voltron robot with PopCap in order to create Gyromancer, a very Puzzle Questish game for Xbox Live Arcade and PC. It's on the show floor here at the Tokyo Game Show and we (literally) took it for a spin.

Just like in Puzzle Quest, players move about from location to location on an overworld map and get into battles with monsters that are settled in a Bejewelled-style match three game. PopCap steps in to handle the puzzle part and modeled it after Bejewelled Twist so that players rotate four gems clockwise instead of swapping two at a time (an item can be used to reverse the flow of your spinner). Exposition is delivered via still art in cut scenes.

"We've always enjoyed a strong partnership with PopCap Games and Gyromancer represents our goal of developing unique gaming experiences, "said John Yamamoto, president and chief executive officer of Square Enix, in a statement released today. "We believe that Gyromancer will appeal not only to core gamers, but will further introduce the RPG genre to casual gamers as well."

Our hero, Rivel, has the ability to summon monsters. He can have three beasts with him at a time but can only take one into battle. Before hitting the gem field he'll have to choose the right monster for the job. The beasts aren't healed after a fight and they can perish, so managing your pack does take some strategy. There are over 50 monsters to be summoned, but only a few are available from the start. After a battle you'll gain experience which leads to new beasts. In the early stages of the game we fought enemies like Cait Sith with a Power Beetle.

Damage is dealt by matching gems that are the same color as your chosen monster. You can spin the dial without creating a match, but doing so will curse a gem on screen. If you don't clear the cursed gem within a handful of turns, you'll take damage.

Gyromancer seems like a lot of fun and it comes from two fantastic developers. Look for it on XBLA and PC soon.
 
Am I the only one really disappointed with the overall quality of the games on XBLA? It only seems that bigger games companies really get it with the exception of a few like The Behemoth. Maybe I'm just spoiled from AppStore and WiiWare.

Do you really think that quantity or frequency wise WiiWare can stand up to XBLA?

Am I the only one really disappointed with the overall quality of the games on XBLA? It only seems that bigger games companies really get it with the exception of a few like The Behemoth. Maybe I'm just spoiled from AppStore and WiiWare.
