Oh, I gotta ask. My copy of Sonic the Hedgehog is all fucked up. It keeps saying its a trial, and I dunno how to fix it. This is online, and my licenses are probably transfered... maybe. Anyway, its the only game that is stuck in trial stasis, any ideas?

Do you really think that quantity or frequency wise WiiWare can stand up to XBLA?
I'm digging Toki Tori, Alien Crush Returns, World of Goo, Contra ReBirth, Defend Your Castle, Dr. Mario Online Rx, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King, Gradius ReBirth, Lost Winds, Mega Man 9, Space Invaders Get Even, Tales of Monkey Island and so on.

I guess my main problem is that developers try and make big games on XBLA but always fall short. They should focus on more focused stuff like in 'Splosion Man, just keep gameplay tight and so you can play it in short bursts.

Uh oh, list wars.

I changed my mind, I totally agree with you, WiiWare is better!

Am I the only one really disappointed with the overall quality of the games on XBLA? It only seems that bigger games companies really get it with the exception of a few like The Behemoth. Maybe I'm just spoiled from AppStore and WiiWare.
Probably. XBLA is seriously the best thing about the 360. I play XBLA games far more than retail 360 games.

Probably.
So true. Compare any game service, or hell console, to AppStore and WiiWare and it's going to look really bad. Just not a fair comparison. But take XBLA on its own merits and it's...ok I guess.

I'm intentionally choosing titles with parallel structure here:
Cloning Clyde, Pinball FX, Braid, Shadow Complex, Defence Grid, Hexic HD, Outpost Kaloki X, Ikaruga, 'Splosion Man, Mega Man 9, the upcoming 0 Day Attack on Earth, Secret of Monkey Island SE.

That's not to say there aren't high quality titles on WiiWare, but based on your list you'd find plenty to love on XBLA too. Are there any particular genres you'd like recommendations for?

Mine is the same. Download again and select continue, instead of play now. Had to do this every time last time I played. Not sure if there's a permanent fix.

I've found that the ratio of good/bad/average on XBLA is about on par with retail. It really depends on the genres you like.

Eh, different strokes I guess, but there have been tons of great "big games" on XBLA.

More than wiiware for sure... IMHO of course.

The problem is there are so many games of ranging quality coming out for XBLA that the really brilliant ones get forgotten about quickly, as we're always looking to the next big release.

I had to sell my PC gaming rig, was not being used anymore.

Yeah, so basically we are spoiled for choice.

I was just trying to give examples in the context of what games I like on WiiWare.

You're probably going to have to use the license transfer tool to sort it out.

This week, Bust a Move, Football Genius and Military Madness will be available this week on Xbox LIVE Arcade for 800 points each.

Aside from the underlying issue that you may be more inclined to defend games you paid for on WiiWare because you had no way to try before you buy, why on earth would you try to attack the quality of games on XBLA if you apparently haven't tried the majority of them? You do know that all XBLA games have demos, right?

Plus there's the whole Indie game section (some games in there have better production values than lower-end WiiWare games).

That new Toy Soldiers game looks like it is going to be awesome.:D

Yeah, it looks really interesting. It kinda does the same thing to tower defence games, what Battlezone did to real time strategy games (some 10-12 years ago). Hopefully, it plays as well too.

http://www.wired.com/gamelife/2009/09/popcap-collaboration-with-square-enix-started-as-joke/

Jason Kapalka, PopCap’s co-founder and chief creative officer, says he was half-joking when he pitched a game concept that combined Final Fantasy’s role-playing action and Bejeweled’s addictive casual gameplay to Square Enix.

The folks at PopCap were fans of another RPG-Bejeweled hybrid, Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords. In the early stages of brainstorming the concept that would eventually become Gyromancer, they figured it would be “karmically neutral” for PopCap to try making a similar title.

PopCap and Square Enix last week announced their collaboration on Gyromancer, a puzzle/RPG hybrid for Xbox 360 and PC the two companies are developing.

Kapalka told Wired.com that he brought up the hybrid idea as a goof while meeting with Square Enix, which publishes some of PopCap game’s in Japan. But once he mentioned “Final Fantasy Bejeweled,” the idea began to gather momentum: Yuichi Murasawa, designer of Final Fantasy Tactics Advance and Final Fantasy Tactics A2, got wind of the Gyromancer concept and jumped on board.

“Suddenly it was a real project over at Square,” Kapalka said.

Once real work toward creating Gyromancer was under way, the next task was to help differentiate the game they were making from Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords. That’s why Square Enix decided to use Bejeweled Twist as the basis for the combat rather than the original flavor of Bejeweled.

Bejeweled Twist, according to Kapalka, had a more “strategic, hard-core feel that fit better with their vision for the game’s story line and world.”

PopCap built early prototypes for the puzzle engine, then handed the keys over to Square Enix.

“Square took over and did the bulk of the design and development fleshing out the RPG elements and of course adding all the incredible artwork and music,” Kapalka said. “It’s just been really fascinating to see them working, and of course pretty gratifying to see the offhand idea of ‘Final Fantasy Bejeweled‘ actually come to life.”

Our first game is Joe Danger aimed at XBLA/PSN/PC just as soon as it feels right, let’s say Spring next year.

You are Joe Danger, the world’s most determined stuntman. You live to thrill the crowd and break World Records. Take on your friends or race against your rivals – the reckless “Team Nasty”. You laugh in the face of danger, and it laughs back, as you bounce from boulder to boulder, on fire, towards that pile of mousetraps. Freeze the game at any point and edit your level however you want it. Once you are finished, share the joy.

Joe Danger aims to recreate the childish joy of the first time you took a toy motorbike, doused it in lighter fluid, lit it, and launched it at high speed over your carefully constructed ramp out a second story window, while all the kids in the neighbourhood cheered below.

Does anyone know when Perfect Dark XBLA will be released? thanks!

I'm hoping we hear something soon. Last I heard it was planned to be a Q4 release, but I don't think we've heard anything recently. I hope we do, cause I'm looking forward to Perfect Dark.

The wireless controller bundle for the Holidays sounds like a good deal that comes with couple of the Arcade games like GW2, Bomberman Live and some other game, Lumines i think.

:lol that's awesome.

So, about the games of THIS week...

Military Madness: Never played other versions, already liking this one from the trial. Had to stop one stage shy of the final for trial, I believe; However, I really like the positioning and surround strategies. The way the stats tally up and collect at screen bottom are nice at making it more obvious as to WHY things are going as they are. I didn't get to appreciate the ranking up of squads much, but I think I ran into their effects... (ouch!)

The Help/How to Play stuff is also well laid out. Laid out in categories, easy to navigate, and with nice, big text.

Haven't purchased the game yet, so no idea how the online is, but so far, it seems like a class act.

Bust-A-Move: A semi-short trial. (Edit: I just thought of the fact you can probably do path A or B in the trail... so it's longer than I gave it credit for.) . You see, my favorite stuff from PS2 BaM were all the sound effects, the characters that could be played after putting in the code to allow CPU play in VS, and the music tracks. The trial gives very little indication of WHAT we have to look forward to, regarding those details.

But controls seemed good. Analog makes large, full press movements, D-pad and bumpers make more precise, pixel perfect ones, and UP resets position.

I'd like to hear more about how much personality the rest of the game has. It seems pretty well done, but I'd just like to know the details!

Football Quiz: Didn't try it, no personal interest.

Military Madness: Love it. Since I first discovered it on my Wii with the Turbo Grafx-16 I was excited to hear that this was coming to XBLA. Going to buy it for sure after spending a good hour or so in the trial messing around with the single player levels and a skirmish vs a CPU. And just like SAB said the directions and info/unit info in the options is all laid out really well and easy to read. Pick this up for sure if your a grid/strategy fan.

Bubble Bobble Live: Never really was a fan but tried it anyways, its Bubble Bobble alright haha. If you need to fill the need for some puzzle action get it.

Football Quiz: Yeah, not too hardcore into Soccer to get this one.

Yeah proof was on the japanese xbox blog, they announced the deals of the week for October and they also announced couple of October XBLA releases to. Aint got link to had but im sure it's in this very thread. Axel & Pixel is only 800 points, gonna be a cool little game.

Vandal Hearts Screenshots Detail Environments
30 Sep 2009 at 14:41:57 by Tim McDonald
Tim McDonald

New screenshots for Vandal Hearts: Flames of Judgment come with details on the environments players will be fighting in.

The forthcoming Xbox LIVE Arcade/PlayStation Network turn-based strategy title - due out in "winter" - will see players battling their foes in a variety of areas, some of which have now been detailed.

You can read up on each of the areas revealed here, with screenshots at the bottom showing them off.

First up is the Church of Restoration, which - following the Great War - acted as part orphanage, part school, but with coffers running low the Church now only accepts the best and brightest.

Next is Koth's Whip River, named for an ancient warlord, which once provided the water supply for two nations but has since largely run dry with battles taking place over what resources remain.

Third is Fort Pelagius, one of the last garrisons of the Great War that hasn't been rendered into firewood and is now home to bandit lord Kelbrun Hale who raids the nearby villages from the safety of its walls.

Fourth are the Dread Caverns, originally intended as an underground highway called the Path of Unity made to link three nations - but political tensions led to a halt in the construction. Now, despite the "vast wealth" in there, there are rumours of dark creatures and ghosts lurking within.

Fifth is Timion Vale - the final battleground of the Great War, with tens of thousands lying dead even before the disaster that murdered most of the rest. No-one goes there anymore, apparently, with tales of the undead keeping people at bay.

Finally, there's The Unknown, a realm "outside" of the mortal world which renders the few who have ever returned completely and utterly mad.
